This time on Photosynthesis, we spoke to Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, a renowned cinematographer who mainly works in New Delhi and Mumbai. He is known for his work on films like "Pyaar Ka Punchnama," "Section 375," Drishyam 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Shershaah, and "Blurr" which earned him the Cinematography Art Award for Best Cinematography in 2023. A gold medalist in Motion Picture Photography from the MGR Government Film and TV Institute of Tamil Nadu, Sudhir has collaborated with top directors like Rajkumar Gupta, Ajay Bahl, Subhash Ghai, and Luv Ranjan. His portfolio includes numerous high-profile commercials for brands like Suzuki, Hero Motocorp, and Colgate, as well as award-winning short films like "Khamakha," Currently, he's filming Ajay Devgan starrer Raid 2.
During the conversation, Sudhir shared how his approach to cinematography has evolved over the years. He reflected on how he started his career with a cautious mindset and gradually began experimenting with new styles and techniques as he gained experience.
He highlighted the importance of choosing the right script, explaining how it determines the visual style of a film. He explained how lighting plays a critical role in creating the mood and atmosphere of a scene, while props can enhance storytelling, especially when building fear or suspense.
Sudhir also discussed the collaborative relationship between the director and cinematographer, emphasizing how they work together to create a cohesive visual narrative and guide the audience’s attention. He spoke about his trusted team, including an associate cinematographer, focus pullers, and a gaffer, and how their expertise contributes to the overall process.

On this episode of Photosynthesis, we sit down with Adeeb Raza, a young and passionate freelance photographer and cinematographer from New Delhi. Adeeb specializes in corporate, event, and wedding photography. He has photographed some of India’s biggest music festivals, such as Coca-Cola-Delhi is Cooking, Zomaland, and Royal Stag Boombox. His impressive portfolio also includes collaborations with major brands such as Hero, Myntra, Redbull, Indigo, Tata, Hyundai, Diego, Pernod Richards, DLF and many more. He has covered high-profile fashion events like Lakme Fashion Week and Indian Couture Week. Additionally, Adeeb has worked with influencers like Ruhee Dosani, Juhi Godambe and Aashna Shroff. He has partnered with leading media agencies like SG Dream Media and Qissa Studios.
This episode explored concert photography, with Adeeb sharing highlights from capturing Marshmello’s India tour and DTU’s Engi Fest, showcasing the energy, big stages, and vibrant crowds.
He opened up about the challenges of event photography, like squeezing through packed spaces or finding the perfect shot while everything is happening so fast. Adeeb explained why he prefers photography over videography and gave us a peek into his gear - wide-angle lenses and drones.
Adeeb’s journey to becoming a concert photographer began with wedding, corporate, and product shoots, later finding his passion in live events. In today's episode, we have Aniket V. Khandagale, a famous cinematographer with over 20 years of experience, working in Bollywood and the Marathi film industry. An alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, Aniket has also worked extensively on documentaries, corporate films, television commercials and promotional videos.
The conversation started with Aniket explaining the pivotal role of a cinematographer in capturing the director's vision and bringing it to life on screen. He talked about how a cinematographer collaborates with team members like the operative cameraman, lighting team, grip team, and focus puller, to achieve the desired visual aesthetics.
He then discussed how different camera techniques and perspectives are used to convey the story and evoke emotions in the audience.
Aniket even shared how different directors have different approaches to communication, with some directors providing detailed instructions and others leaving more room for collaboration. According to him, increased awareness and information flow have led to more collaboration and a clearer vision among directors and cinematographers.
He then discussed the significance of pre-visualization in designing the look of a film. He mentioned the challenges and changes brought about by the transition from traditional film to digital filmmaking, and its implications on shooting and editing.
Finally, Aniket explained the role of frame rates and motion blur in creating cinematic magic. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the traditional frame rate of 24 FPS for preserving the film look.

In today's episode, we sat down with Bijitesh De, a famous DoP, who has been doing some remarkable work in Bollywood, the advertising world and OTTs for around 15 years. An alumnus of the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, Bijitesh has lensed over 500 ads, web series, Bollywood movies and several music videos.
Bijitesh first talked about the differences in the purpose and creative approach between Bollywood films and commercial ads. He explained that Bollywood films offer a lot of freedom in terms of being creative, while in commercial ads he usually needs to stick to specific brand rules. However, some brands are open to trying new things and give him and his team a chance to be involved more creatively in those ad projects.
Bijitesh explained the importance of emotional connection in advertising and the differences between working with established brands versus new brands.
The conversation delved into the impact of technology and AI on filmmaking. While acknowledging their role in enhancing the creative process, Bijitesh emphasized that these tools cannot replace the essence of human creativity and storytelling.
Finally, Bijitesh discussed the shift from TV ads to online advertising. He shared insights into how this transition is changing the way companies advertise their products and its impact on how videos are made.

In today's episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Bhishma P. Trivedi, a seasoned sound engineer with many years of experience in the field. He has worked extensively across Gujarati, Marathi, and Bhojpuri film industries. He has also managed several live shows of famous artists. Currently, he works as a sound engineer in the UK for a media production company.
The conversation started with Bhishma sharing the beginnings of his sound engineering career - from his studies to landing his first job in a prestigious Mumbai studio. He also shared stories of his first film project as a sound recordist.
Bhishma discussed the different aspects of sound recording - covering live events, film recording, and post-production. We then dived into the technical side of things, focusing on live events and film production.
For live events, Bhishma stressed the importance of placing microphones carefully and managing sound to ensure accurate and high-quality sound reproduction. He explained the challenges faced in outdoor events, dealing with issues like delay and background noise.
The conversation shifted to the difference between sync sound recording and dubbing in films. He talked about the challenges of sync sound in India due to noisy surroundings. Wrapping up, he discussed how the art of sound engineering is evolving. He even emphasized that advancements in technology have made sound recording more accessible, but the creativity and passion of sound engineers remain crucial in achieving high-quality results.

He specializes in behind-the-scenes (BTS) videography and photography. He is also into film poster photography and capturing the still and candid cinematic shots. But that's not all – outside of movies, he also enjoys snapping fashion pictures as a hobby.
The conversation started on why winter is a busy season for the Bengali film industry due to the more favourable shooting conditions. He takes us through the intricate process of BTS photography, discussing his role as a silent observer capturing the raw essence of film sets.
Arpan reveals how BTS photography is important in documenting the entire production process, capturing the raw emotions of actors and crew members between shots. He emphasizes the pivotal role it plays in future reference, promotional material, and preserving the essence of filmmaking.
Arpan even explains how the scale of production influences the BTS unit's scope. Larger productions may require multiple photographers covering various locations. And don't overlook continuity photography – a crucial aspect in behind-the-scenes photography of a film.

In today's episode, we got to chat with the talented Jasdeep Singh Sidhu. Jasdeep is an experienced video editor with a diverse portfolio, ranging from music videos to historical and geographical documentaries.
We started the conversation by delving into what sparked Jasdeep's interest in editing. Surprisingly, he started his career as a wedding and corporate photographer. Recognizing a gap between initial concepts and final project outputs, he started editing to add a polished and refined touch to the finished videos. This not only allowed him to meet client expectations but also granted him the independence to work solo.
Jasdeep discussed the importance of the editor in the video making process. He emphasized the need for strong communication and collaboration between the director, director of photography (DOP), and editor.
He also highlighted the expanded role of the editor beyond timeline building, like the responsibility of adding sound effects, sound engineering and organizing the project workflow. He shared insights on how low-budget projects often require the editor to find creative solutions to overcome limitations.
Jasdeep advised aspiring editors, emphasizing the importance of research, adaptability and continuous learning to excel in their craft.
