I wanted to say for anyone reading the notes, it's been a great 3 years of my life doing this.  I've thoroughly enjoyed speaking with people around the globe and meeting so many friends.  Each one has meant so much and I've learned from so many and hope you are proud of who I'm becoming.

I could never have envisaged this change happening, but after the changes discussed in the podcast you can understand why.

Keep watching my social feed for any updates.

Thanks for all the fish.

A catch up with Ethan Moses16 Mar 202200:51:32

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 173 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Today we get to catch up with Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl.  I hadn't spoken to Ethan since November 2019 but always followed his work.  When he was running a recent project I couldn't help but be interested.  Ethan has been playing with "afghan" cameras as they call them, huge 20x24 bits of technology.  Not only that but he's been using the ra4 process to make his own version of instant positive prints!

Ethan's personality always shines through, a man who can't stop playing and inventing.  So in this one listen out for:

  • instax + polaroid film
  • Elsa Dorfman
  • Zorki/Fed/Kiev + Pentacons
  • Mongoose + Meerkat
  • Making cameras
  • Repairing & playing
  • Selling to the industry

Emilio Cresciani - cuts, rubbish & spills08 Dec 202101:05:35

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 164 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

One day I was sending hello messages to people that had recently followed me on Instagram. I usually check out their images and websites, so I can decide if I'm going to follow their work.  As you imagine I follow a lot of people and try to keep a small number of close people to engage with.  After Emilio Cresciani followed me I was intrigued and after seeing his projects I messaged him through Instagram and here we are!

Emilio is an artist from Australia who sees beauty in elements all around us.  It was fun talking to Emilio for his laid back personality as you will soon find out.  He's a caring person too who teaches people with disabilities and worked in care previously as well.  What's even more interesting is his project based work - like "remains of the day".  A great project looking at waste and how humans are affecting this world.

When talking about his oil slicks, we are looking at what comes out the ground is driping back in to the ground.  Don't get me started on his car screen's too, buying over 30 of these and making art out of these.  Honestly he's able to see patterns and something interesting and use different photography processes to make art.  As we finish the conversation we talk about awards and competitions, then finally memories of his grandad.

So in this one look out for:

- recycle + waste

- negative consequences

- metallic paper

- shooting roadside

- rain

- safety glass

- iphone vs photograms

- making a lightbox

- working with ice

Review

You may have seen on social media recently, I posted the latest iTunes review.  It certainly made me laugh its a pretty bad one but everyone is entitled to an opinion so here goes.

"Don’t bother"

Worst interviewer in history. Mumbles. Interrupts. Wouldn’t know an intelligent question if it fell on him.

All I can say is, whatever you are doing now, just stop. Go leave a review and help me cancel this out. I can handle criticism, but we all know the statements are incorrect. I'm not the worst interviewer, just one of them, oh well you have to laugh.

Interview with fine art photographer Jan Schlegel11 Mar 202001:32:36

For episode 82 we bring you a very talented large format photographer called Jan Schlegel.  I came across his work through been featured in the lovely Photoklassik magazine.

Jan is a true artist who considers the final print over any part of the process.  He has been known to spend 14 hours toning his prints. So each piece is individual like no other work.

We concentrate this episode on the intellectual side of life, discussing culture and the race against time.  It’s both enlightening and shocking to hear what Jan has seen over a number of visits to these regions.

In this episode we talk about:

- travelling to Africa, Asia

- dealing with the Taliban

- building wells

- salt & platinum prints

- language

- a picture is a mirror of us

Welcome to episode 76 of Photography Insights and another great guest for you.  After listening to Ibarionex Perello aka The Candid Frame and reading his blog for some time now, I have really enjoyed his conversations with other photographers.  He seems to get the stories and such interesting people, that it can really move you.  Ibarionex has been podcasting now for over 14 years and on his 500th show!  He's also had 25 years in the photography industry, so has some great experience.  Using this gift he's run workshops and taught in different places around the globe, written 6 books and provides critique's and teaching too.

One of the reasons you should listen to Ibarionex is his smooth tonal voice, it's very relaxing almost like a god of podcasting (I've compared this to James Earl Jones from Hollywood).

We discussed:

  • The craft of interviewing
  • Working with guests
  • Transition between podcast + photographers

Interview with Top Gun Dave Baranek22 Jan 202001:14:54

Welcome to episode 75 everyone and I have another different guest for you.  Some of you have been waiting excitedly for this one too - so welcome on board Flight Instructor Dave Baranek (aka callsign "Bio").

So Dave was an officer in the USA Navy and not only flew (he's a radar intercept officer)  in the f-14 Tomcat's but managed a squadron too!  Not only that but Dave has ties to one of the most famous aeroplane films ever - Top Gun!  Yes, he helped with instructing on the film and is credited too.

Dave is a very friendly guy who is happy to share details of his career, which included shooting pictures whilst he was flying!  It's another interesting guest who started life with film cameras like the Konica fs1 (+ft1) and talks to us how he coped with his work and still taking some lovely images.  He tells us a little his talk in the navy and what he's done since too.

So listen out for:

  • how Dave's vision affected his path
  • instructing at the top gun school
  • Shooting through plexiglass
  • Tripods + ejection seats
  • Konica cameras
  • Technicians vs Artists
  • Navy photo labs
  • Reconnaissance missions
  • Film choices
  • Dangers of photography & flying
  • Importance of hard work

I have to say Dave's life is very different to most, but he is still a humble man so hope you like this one.  My favourite quote from this show was "connected a tripod to the ejector seat" - I nearly choked when he said this!

RANDOM QUESTIONS

Of course, Dave kindly answers our fun questions so find out why he would move Hong Kong and some very special Navy training tests.

EXTRA CONTENT

I would urge anyone listening to check my website initially for the extra content, as Dave has provided you all with some examples of his work.

For episode 74 we bring you the man behind Japan Camera Hunter, yes its Bellamy Hunt.

Bellamy is at the forefront for those in search of their dream cameras.  In fact, his business works around this idea of sourcing cameras in high-end condition.  But this isn’t all that Bellamy is know for.  Of course, there is his own 35mm film too! Called JCH Streetpan.

He’s been around the analogue photography scene a long time as a blogger too, with reviews and articles on current news.  In fact, you might know him from his writing skills and honesty.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The industry of sourcing camera
  • Japanese customs
  • Blogging
  • Amazon
  • Confidentiality
  • Trends & travelling

Competition results with Charlie from Kodak Alaris08 Jan 202000:26:56

First of all, can I thank you all for submitting such amazing work, you all deserve something so you have my gratitude and humble thanks.  We also need to thank Charlie and the team at Kodak Alaris for sponsoring this competition, without them we are nothing.

It really does give us great pleasure to look through so many high-quality images, and coming up with a final winner and 2nd place is not easy.  So if you remember the theme was "creativity".  The only rules were to submit a maximum of 2 images and had to be shot on Kodak film.

WINNERS

So we will go from the top and work down, here we go:

1st place - @Aiony with his wonderful reflection of a lady's eye in a mirror - 20 rolls coming your way!!!

(image link)

2nd place - "Jennifer" by @lightcomesthrough with a unique abstract/model image of a lady in a sofa - 10 rolls coming your way!!!

(image link)

CLOSE RUNNERS UP

Due to the number of entries & the kindness of Kodak they also nominated the following as "honourable mentions" and will receive a small present also!

@benfelten - "Flower power" with a double exposure shot

(image link)

@smrphotoart - "Mary's Shell" a long exposure shot with Tri-x

(image link)

@roaring.images - Long exposure shot of a model with movement

(image link)

FINAL THOUGHTS

After looking through the 100 entries (yes amazing) we selected those above as most of the work was done in the camera and using the ability of the film.  Though we have to say there were some very creative ideas too, a few with unique ideas like Calvin and his moving model and of course Valentin with his chicken pictures.  We also discuss people like Ned & David Collyer from earlier podcasts and David's rush to get his entry in at the last minute.

The podcast is definitely recommended to hear the full reasoning behind the shots and here feedback by us both, though the website has the photographs too.  We will include a small gallery of those above.

Please keep shooting Kodak film, make sure you follow our Instagram feeds to here the latest of what's coming up:-

Lou Jones - skills, slides & survival01 Dec 202101:29:49

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 163 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

This interview is one I had been really looking forward to as well, so let me tell you why.  First of Lou Jones was recommended by Paula Tognarelli and as the ex-head at Griffin museum, she knows a talent when she sees one.  So after reaching out we had a brief chat weeks before the discussion you will hear.  Lou is such an interesting guy and time just flew by, so I apologise for the length of this one.  I was going to split in to 2 episodes but seemed stupid so take your time with this one.  It was actually too hard to cut, the beginning of our chat lay the foundations for who Lou is and we escalate through his career and experiences (through still film and the digital world).

The thing is Lou has worked for many big names like Time/Life, National Geographic and other Fortune 500 companies, he's wrote many books, travelled and taught.  It's practically impossible to cover so much variety and its ever changing. Even though we didn't get chance to talk about it, his next project is so important - thats the PanAfricaProject, so do check out his work.

So we get to talk about life, cinematography like Bladerunner and Dune, and how they effect our photography. We move in to the life and times of being a black photographer, from getting noticed to maintaining a career.  It's a long career shooting with text book publishers, advertisers, models, the Olympics (winter and summer) to musicians. Not only that but we discuss how important his Death Row series was to him as a person and his career.  You need to listen to this as it's a rare thing to gain access to death row inmates.

Lou is a fabulous, fun and well spoken guy, so lets hope we see him again in the future.  For now here a list of a few points we come across:

  • dyslexia
  • influences
  • cinematography
  • motion
  • working for clients
  • being different
  • a million slides
  • getting appointments
  • the olympics
  • Charles Mingus
  • contact visits

Christmas special with the Phlogger29 Dec 201900:29:36

Merry Christmas everyone, it's December 2019 and my final show of the year (although this will miss the usual Wednesday slot since its Christmas).  The idea behind this show was to look back over the year and talk about what has been happening in terms of meetups, blogging and podcasting.

Obviously we are going to go through the results of the Kodak competition too, so stay tuned to the end for that.

ARTICLES

Well, what a year, as far as blogging is concerned I wrote articles for:

Analogue Wonderland

35mmc

Kosmo

Emulsive

Street Photography magazine.

We even had a guest article by David on my website about shooting infrared film too (check it out here).

FRIENDSHIPS

I would like to thank my friends for their continued support and help over the years teaching me how to improve my portraiture and lending me gear too.  These are namely:

Leon Broomhead, Jay Good, Jay Clarke, Stephen Rendall and Jon Scrimshaw.

KODAK COMPETITION

Quick update on this.

PODCASTING

As far as friendships are concerned, there are just times when you meet like-minded people.  You cannot do this every time, but when you do it's a long-lasting relationship.  These are (in no particular order):

Jason Lane

Steve Lloyd

The Graybills

Quinn Jacobson

Dominique

David & Ned Collyer

John Hughes

Andrew Sanderson

Tuan Bui

SHOOTS

Occasionally there has been a group photoshoot and one model session too, which I really enjoy. The group shoots have been arranged by Jay Clarke at the x-church in Gainsborough.  They are fantastic for learning, sharing, practising and networking.

During December I shot a wedding too, it was to help a friend's daughter out in my home town of Scunthorpe.  After checking out the venue earlier in the year I anticipated my gear would not be suitable but arranged something to get past this.  Hopefully, in due course in the new year, I can show you some photos from this session.  Shooting in December indoor is never easy and without light, you have no photo, so it was challenging.

MEET UPS

In early 2019 we managed to catch up with a few faces at the Photography Show and it was the first time I managed to speak with the likes of Stephen at Kosmo, Paul at Analog Wonderland, Steve Lloyd at Chromas, Sunny16 podcast team, Sam at Solarcan and John Whitemore to name a few.

I was fortunate to catch up with Paul Lefko from L.A. during December.   On the way home from meeting Paul, I dropped in at Cambridge to meet up with John Hughes.

PROJECTS

During 2019 the secret project ended, full details will be released in due course.   The Washi project started and there was one update about issues with the camera, more details soon.

For 2020, there is a street photography project due which is tailored around a few individuals and talks are ongoing with some analog photographers for another too.

FUTURE

During 2020 your first podcast due is with Bellamy at Japan Camera Hunter, there will be a fighter pilot due and many more to come. Don't be afraid of approaching me with your ideas, sell your story.

Interview with Joshua Blackburn18 Dec 201901:12:51

For episode 71 we bring you the author and photographer of the amazing book "Launderama" - Joshua Blackburn.

Joshua has found his way to photography late in life after a career in design.  He embarked on a massive project to photograph all the laundrettes in London.  You will find out, the how, why and when about this fantastic story and will help you understand some of the pictures better.  It's not a book you can say fits one style of photography, it encompasses abstract art, the geometry of lines, documentary and street all rolled into one!

He also talks to us about:

  • Hoxton book binding
  • Working with Hoxton
  • Visiting 462 Laundrettes
  • Exploring & travelling around London

Dominique - interview with a street portrait photographer11 Dec 201901:03:56

I'm pleased to bring you this episode because I first started talking to Dominique over a year ago, through our mutual friend Sarah (link here). Sarah said what a lovely lady she was and they had become friends and she creates such lovely portraits of people.  That is no lie either, her work is stunning and so consistent.  I'm not sure how Dominique finds her subjects, but they are so different and such interesting characters.

Dominique lives in New York, but originates from France so listen to her charming accent.  She is a caring and family person, who captures people on the street with her Sony.

In this show Dominique talks to us about:

  • Photography mentors
  • Shooting at midday
  • Sony a7r iii full frame
  • inspiration
  • Friendships from the street
  • Shooting everyday
  • Dancing
  • New york diversity
  • Colour vs b&w

Adam Lee - a photographer, a donkey and travelling04 Dec 201901:08:04

I'm pleased to introduce you to Adam Lee aka "adams walks".  He's a guy who loves travelling on foot and camping around.  Recently he walked the entire length of the UK with a donkey named Martin!!!  It's a fascinating story a man and a pack animal, how they learnt about each other and kept plodding on.  He managed to write on his blog a little about this and even from the perspective of Martin the donkey - which is funny, so check out the links.

Fingers crossed Adam will get published too, as he's working on a book about his trip (one of a few).  Adam's also work on long term plans to walk China with a mule for company.

I'm thankful to my friend Tobias for introducing Adam (Tobias featured on this episode).

Tuan Bui - interview with a wedding & film photographer27 Nov 201901:14:38

Tuan Bui - episode 68.  We came across Tuan from his beautiful work in the PhotoKlassik magazine.  He's a wedding & film shooter from Chicago who loves travelling too.  What I found really interesting was his choice of technology - lots of polaroids.  This seemed a strange concept especially in the world of high resolution and detail found in the digital world.  So have a listen to why Tuan shoots using large format & huge aeroplane lenses when using Fuji pack film.

Listen out for these areas of interest:

  • Learning large format
  • Instant film Fuji FPC
  • Packing camera bag
  • Choosing gear for the job
  • Great clients

Interview with light painter Denis Smith20 Nov 201901:09:07

In this show, we interview a guy from across the other side of the world, in a diverse country called Australia.  Denis Smith is not only an Olympus visionary but someone who shoots long exposure.  He creates amazing images of orbs and other patterns using long exposure + a multitude of tools.  Some of these are made by his company and sold through his online store.

What made me want to interview Denis was his story, it's one with a turbulent past.  He had a life-changing event that made him become who he is now - a great person and friend to all.  We do talk in an open and brutal manner about mental health with men.

Through his meetups and workshops, he's able to teach people why he loves light painting so much.  Denis talks about light painting and how easy it is to get started and why do-it-yourself is an important part of the process.

I would urge anyone to check the website for the full experience, where Denis's video will be available and some example shots.

Podcast contains:

  • Meetups vs workshops
  • photography changes your life
  • 10 years shooting
  • battling mental health issues
  • flicker group ( lightjunkies )
  • social media
  • Long exposure
  • Diy tools
  • Experimentation
  • Olympus visionary

Of course, we get to have some fun with Denis, so listen out why we talk about:

  • Ski jumping long exposure
  • Strip joints for 90-year-olds
  • The perfect way to clean your lens
  • A pint of denis rodman

Interview with camera inventor Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl06 Nov 201901:08:18

It's so nice to interview from the different areas of the photography world and this one is definitely that!  I remember Ethan launching the Kickstarter project for Cameradactyl back in 2018 and thought wow, how colourful is that, such a different approach.

Ethan has done a cracking job with the camera and launched all manner of accessories for cameras (not just his large-format model).  He has now ventured into making a handheld 4x5 which is a great concept.  Now I know not everyone is going to be thrilled about the products he makes or the choice of materials.  But this is 2019, there are not many options unless you have unlimited funds and some accessories he makes are only available second hand, as they relate to cameras from the 70+80's.

What's amazing about Ethan is that he has a business mind, an engineers mind and also a photographers eye, so it was quite easy to go between business and building in the same sentence.  In this one we discuss:

  • DIY at 10 years old
  • Home depot camera build challenge
  • Touring/selling in 50 states
  • Making 4x5/6x9 camera’s
  • Business decisions
  • Making custom ideas
  • Youtube + monetising
  • Scaling manufacturing
  • opensx70 project
  • Custom build/prints
  • Problems with home production
  • Building a mini-lab film processor

Random questions

Ethan easily answers our strange questions that involve:

- which mythical creature lives In Africa

- Eddie the Eagle!

- $1 million button

- Morning glory flowers

- Ideal presents for 90-year-old's

Interview with street photographer John Hughes30 Oct 201901:22:59
For episode 64 I'm going back to my roots with this one, my very first interview was with a street photographer.  I think its just something in some of us to shoot in this way.  So today I've finally had a chance to catch up with the man of shadows and highlights, John Hughes. John is a really good force for street photography, he speaks the truth and from the heart.  If he doesn't like something he will tell you, so if honesty isn't for you look elsewhere!  John is a full-time photographer and runs workshops, creates zines and offers one to one coaching. He talks to us about his early start in life and how a meet up with Bruce Davidson has helped shaped who he is to this day.  John actually was introduced through our mutual friend and Kodak Alaris competition winner Barney Maguire (lives in the same town). Through our conversation we discuss: Sticky toffee pudding beer defined at 13 as street photographer influences starting digital in 2008 Analogue can hold you back Workshops+ teaching Camping out in same spot Ricoh gr 2 vs 3 Camera tech Blogging + writing problems Find differences locations to shoot Shooting the shadows Starbucks 12 month project Spending 12 hours in tate We also talk about matters like is technology actually important with street photography?  About projects and ways to shoot in everyday places. RANDOM QUESTIONS We did a laugh with the random questions too (*** we may or may not have cut one out as this is a family show after all).  There are only the odd few swear words, so bear with us.  So find out: why John wants to punch me what "nailmeup.com" is all about why we talk about sticky toffee drinking with a few blokes call John INFO If you want to know more about John and his work check him out here: Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/pavementsphotography/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/john.hughes.photography/ Website - https://www.johnhughesphotography.uk/ EXTRA CONTENT Visit my website to see links, photos and items discussed on this show.    http://phlogger.co.uk/

Peter Kayafas - Discipline, New York + Totems24 Nov 202101:07:38

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 162 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Once again we head to the big apple for our next guest, someone from the world of film, the darkroom, education and travels.  It's a great pleasure to talk with someone whose work has been exhibited around San Francisco, New York and New Orleans.  Peter Kayafas teaches at the Pratt Institute in New York but is also the director of Eakins Press and involved in other photography related boards.  I wanted to talk with Peter as he travels around the US and manages to make prints and monographs of his work usually in the form of books.  I mean you can't beat a good photography book so do check out the links.

Peter has vast experience with teaching but also with shooting and darkroom too, so much he was in the darkroom with his dad around 2-3 years of age!  It was interesting to talk about his projects which are "the way west", "totems" which is about links to the past; "people in new york".  The people of New York stands out in the sense he even made 36" square prints on aluminium for this exhibition - imagine that!   The last one we discuss is "coney island waterdance" which he shot during the 1990's about the polar bear club.

So in this one listen out for:

  • broadening skills
  • default audiences
  • 80 days in a darkroom
  • printed medium
  • discipline
  • using instagram

Interview with experimental photographer Leon Broomhead02 Oct 201900:52:24

For episode 60 I'm delighted to bring you a quality photographer and friend of mine too - Leon Broomhead.  Leon is what you might call an experimental photographer, shooting styles that involve fashion and abstract but not directly.

What can I say about Leon, well he is a thoughtful guy, who thinks a lot about his work and how to get the desired outcome.  His work is all about pushing boundaries both in a technical way and artistic.  I’ve met up with Leon many times and its always been a pleasure.  Sharing the same types of photography has helped both of us.  Having a passion for film photography has always been part of our lives and conversations, so i’m glad to share a little with you.

Interview with press photography legend Paul Berriff25 Sep 201901:27:33

Welcome to episode 59 of Photography insights, your one-stop guide to interviews with people in the photography industry.  Before we move on I wanted to thank you all for listening and supporting the show.  There are a couple of ways you can help further, which are, 1 - leave an iTunes review and to share the show with your friends. One of your friends will be interested, you can guarantee, there is a massive range of people interviewed so there is something for everyone’s interest.

Today we have a legendary film and video photographer from the UK called Paul Berriff. He’s been shooting over 50 years in the press world of photography and documentary film making.

Paul purchased his first camera from a newspaper round, he followed emergency vehicles on his pushbike in his teens!  He learned to test his film exposure by meeting bands like the Beatles, Rolling stones in their dressing rooms in the 1960’s

Paul has some great stories from just working in the press industry and then goes into the 4 near-death experiences.  I mean if you listen to them it's crazy and you might wonder how he’s still with us.  I think most people would have given up after experiences like this. One of these concerns 9/11 and you cant feel the magnitude of what Paul is saying, so please do check out his video on Youtube.

As usual, check out the show notes on the website for links to his amazing work.

Marius, the alternative male model interview by the Phlogger27 Aug 201901:02:15

For episode 55 of Photography insights, we interview an alternative male model called Marius.  Okay that's not his real name, but his modelling alias, but that's what is important and who everybody hires.

I've worked with Marius a couple of times at recent charity group shoots in Lincolnshire and he's a great guy.  He has the character, the laughs and professionalism.  Marius works in the goth style so is normally associated with a vampire.  Knowing this I asked him to portray this for my corpse bride wedding scene, he would be the evil vampire!  He played this role so well and it was then great to work with him again a few months later where we did some dark and low key shots.

In this one we discuss:

  • reputations + purpleport
  • Trade for prints
  • Influences of music
  • Max payne +matrix

Blogging, Podcasts,Instagram and FB updates featuring the Phlogger's wife!22 Aug 201900:07:02

Welcome to episode 54 (i think), which features the one and only Dawn, wife of the phlogger!  You've recently had the pleasure of her intro's rather than my dulcit tones, so thought it would be nice for her to join me.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Podcast changes
  • Podcasts guests coming soon
  • Blogging
  • Instagram
  • Facebook

So you may have noticed a change in the name to "Photography insights - important industry reviews", this is to try and hone my SEO skills!  Yes i'm trying to appeal to more people and get the message out about what we are doing.  It would be great to spread the word, share knowledge and for people to listen to these amazing people.  It's truly an honour each time for someone to spend their precious time and impart what they do and have learned with us all.  The episodes will be named to show relevance to the interviewee too going forward, so if anyone is searching for them, hopefully one day the podcast will show in the Google!

Yes I never stop planning guests, sometimes they happen all at once and I'm trying to find time to edit and spend time perfecting things behind the scenes for you.  I'm in talks with some great people so keep watching the Twitter (https://twitter.com/mraiwalmsley)and Facebook feeds (https://facebook.com/phlogger.co.uk/).  Not all may happen but we will see, i'm keeping positive.  I do have a long list of people and strive to look at different genres and types in the industry where possible.  I want to keep it fresh and bring different minds in and keep you all motivated.

On the blogging front we've recently had an amazing guest post by David Hochleitner (https://phlogger.co.uk/how-to-shoot-colour-infrared-film-by-david-hochleitner/) all about shooting colour infra red on film.  It's a great read, with a clear guide how David works and how to use the film.  He provides a great insight in to this interest ex-surveillance film.

Their is also an article by myself on shooting your first wedding called "how to survive your first solo wedding". I've gone through the experiences from my shoot, how I planned and prepared for this.  I talk about equipment choices, failures and how to cope with anxiety.  Yes I shot film too on my first wedding, which all worked out nice in the end!

Instagram - main blogging feed is still  https://www.instagram.com/phlogger.co.uk

Instagram - my images are now on on https://www.instagram.com/phlogger_photos/

It's been great to get hold of someone who is going to work alongside me about street photography.  Finally I've met another person with the interest, intellect, skill and personality to work as a team.  There will be big changes for my street group and what will come in the future.  For those interested it can be found here https://www.facebook.com/groups/pavementsphotography

I would like to remind everyone to leave an iTunes review as always - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/phlogger-andrew-walmsley/id1379816844?mt=2

Edward Curtis, the Graybills & drinking with John Lennon15 Aug 201901:37:52

John and Coleen Graybill help run the Curtis legacy foundation and their other business Mountain Spirit photo.  John is a direct descendant of Edward Curtis, a photographer from the late 1800’s/early 1900's who famously photographed the native Americans. Richard Chivers - Gas, glass and social housing17 Nov 202100:55:57

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 161 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

As many of you know I love shooting architecture, there is something that draws me in. After following a few photographers I have tried encouraging them to come on the show. but it's tough in this field.  I see a lot of international artist so appreciate speaking about your work is not easy.  Well that changed and pleased to introduce Richard Chivers to you all.  Richard is from the UK and not only loves architecture, but shoots this genre professionally too.  What's also interesting is although he's a digital shooter, Richard loves 5x4 too, so a lot of his personal work was shot with his large format.

A talented man who works all over shooting some stunning buildings for architects.  This work has led him to personal projects too as part of some collectives too.  The projects like degeneration and off grid are all about the history of architecture in the UK and how its a changing landscape.  From the 1950's social housing to Victorian engineering and  modern sky scrapers, we cover it all!  Some of this work has been shot in cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southampton,Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham.

So in this one look out for:

  • controversy of glass
  • New York
  • vantage points
  • shooting 5x4
  • social housing
  • architects
  • tilt shift
  • gas holders

50th anniversary special episode25 Jul 201902:00:43

Well folks we made it to episode, so that also means a year of podcasting.  For this one I wanted to have a relaxing chat with some of my prior guests and get an update to what has happened.

It's been an amazing, emotional and hard working lesson in life.  I've met some very interesting characters around the world whom I now call friends.  From my early days of just using my mobile phone and playing with different ways of recording, i've settled down in to something custom built by myself.  This now allows me live video with my guests, which helps us with the conversation and allows me to see emotion.  Once I've converted this to audio I can then present the important part of our conversations.

For this show we have:

Paul McKay from Analogue Wonderland

Jon Scrimshaw from Instinctive Photography

Jason "speed plates" Lane of Pictoriographica

Steve Lloyd from Chroma Camera

Paul Lefko from L.A.

EM from emulsive.org

Yes this did take some planning and took a fair bit of time to get this episode ready for you.  Everybody on the show has interesting news since their podcast interviews and due listening to in their own right.  In summary we discuss:

  • life changes
  • collaboration
  • websites
  • Kickstarter + plate holders
  • latest shoots
  • podcasts
  • award nominations
  • scanning
  • origin of random questions

RANDOM QUESTIONS

To mix this up everybody was invited to ask the Phlogger questions for a change.  One of my guests tries his hand at a new way to answer the questions too!  But find out:

  • Phlogger's embarrassing accident
  • origin of random questions
  • why i'm an honorary scouser
  • my favorite film

I'm a humble person who loves to celebrate the work of other people, hopefully you will enjoy listening to our guests.  I really can't thank you all for joining in this one off show.  A couple of people had to cancel or couldn't make it, so a shout out to Dominique in New York, Leyton in Scotland and Ashley in Australia.

I'm nothing without my wonderful guests, each one has inspired me in a different way, each one has shown compassion and an insight in to their personality.  It is great to say many have remained friends and the Phlogger will always follow their work and showcase where possible.

Finally thanks to all you listeners too, i'm nothing without you and hope you get something out of the show.  My aims are to help educate people about other processes and genres of photography.  It's important they remain fun but also show the personality of the person, its these insights that resonate within me.

News

Recently i've had some annual leave from the day job so been in the darkroom. It's been great to be back and playing around with ideas. I would never know how to classify my work or what I do. I have a liberal approach to my art, sure this is science but most of it is experimenting. Recently I have played with perspectives, tried montage/mirroring, used blue some dye and old paper. This weeks guest has got me thinking too, so let's see.

I'm pleased to say my film washi project has now completed too - this is the one that involved the smallest film company in the world and a 72 exposure camera.  It was a lot of fun sending this off to random people around the UK and France.  Of course we were delayed by covid so it's taken a little time.  Anyway watch out for an article soon on this.
