The Slow Drift: 6 Subtle Behaviors That Tear Church Leadership Teams Apart | Chris Sonksen18 août 202600:41:40

*More About This Episode* Failed? Here's How to Bounce Back Stronger
If you're dealing with failure, these 5 tips will help you gain resiliency in your career:

1. Don't overthink the failure. Whether you're an actor who didn't get the role you auditioned for or a filmmaker whose pitch fell flat, you may never know what went wrong. Don't overthink it; move on.

2. Don't take it personally. Try to separate the failure of your project from who you are as a person.

3. Get objective advice. Get a third-party objective with the maturity and professionalism that you can trust.

4. At the moment of rejection, keep a cool head. If possible, see if you can ask questions about what you could have done better. That information you acquire can help set you up for future success.

5. Don't let rejection or failure derail your dream. Your career is much bigger than any single project. You never know when tweaking a concept could work for something else.

**More About This Episode** Work Cultures: How to Build a Creative Team that Thrives
Build a creative team that does their best work! Here's Phil's five to make it happen:

1. Create stability. Creative people need stability to thrive. If they're worried about losing their job, financial problems, or excessive turnover, they'll never release their best ideas.

2. Be flexible. Be open to different hours or working conditions for your creative team. Give your team some flexibility and it will revolutionize their attitude.

3. Get them the tools they need. Don't hold your creatives back with outdated equipment. Think about it: The less time and energy they spend overcoming technical and equipment problems, the more time and energy they can spend on developing amazing ideas.

4. Understand the difference between organizational structure and communication structure. Hierarchy is important within your organization, but when it comes to communication, I recommend you throw the organizational structure out the window. Your creative team should be able to call anyone to ask questions and discuss ideas. Create a free-flowing communications system, and the ideas will grow.

5. Give them credit. A great creative culture allows everyone to be noticed for their accomplishments.  Let them have credit for their ideas and they will do amazing things for your team!

Bonus: Don't be afraid to push creative people out of their comfort zone! While they probably won't admit it, creative people love deadlines because it gives them perspective on the project.

Paul Steven Forrest is an award-winning writer, director, and the founder of Maple Street Media. With a career spanning national television, documentaries, and ministry campaigns, Paul has seen firsthand that facts alone don't move people—stories do. His passion is equipping video creators, entrepreneurs, and ministries to craft stories that not only capture attention but create emotional connection and inspire action.

*More About This Episode* How to Produce the BEST Christmas Pageant ever! Behind the Scenes of a Successful Church Program

The Gift of Christmas is a Prestonwood tradition and has become one of the highlights of the Christmas season, with thousands of guests attending every year.  Find out more: https://prestonwoodgoc.org

More about the Church Media Checklist for Holiday Programs (or how to avoid the nightmare before Christmas)

1. Start preparation early. Whether it's live, multi-cam or video-taped, get your hands on a script or musical score as soon as possible.

2. Bring your crew into the planning process. Your media team and volunteers may have valuable ideas that can help the production.

3. Understand lighting differences. Make sure you understand the difference between stage lighting and television lighting.

4. Create a shot list. Always have a plan.

5. Stop screaming and yelling. If you're directing a Christmas or Easter presentation and you lose control, you instantly lose respect with your team.

6. Use cuts and dissolves correctly and know the difference between them. There should be a purpose behind your choices.

7. Shoot a rehearsal. It's worth the extra money and time to bring in a paid staff or your volunteers.

8. Have a debriefing. Especially when you have multiple performances, shoot and debrief after each one.

9. Toss out normal service camera rules. Don't be afraid to move the cameras around according to the script or music plan.

*More About This Episode* Public Speaking: Tips for Leading a Short Devotional

There are many opportunities in the Christian world where you may be asked to lead a short devotion. It might be to begin a conference, open a board meeting, before introducing a main speaker, at the start of a big meeting, and more. However, so many people completely blow the point of a devotion that I wanted to share these reminders of how to make it memorable.

How to make your speech memorable:

1. Start with scripture. Focus their mind on God.

2. Don't preach. Make it conversational. Share from your heart.

3. Open with a personal story to build a stronger connection with your audience - but keep it short.

4. This is not your chance to pitch your project or brilliant ideas! The devotional time isn't about you, it's about focusing the audience on God or the conference theme.

5. Respect the schedule. Keep to your given time frame. Practice with the clock!

You may not be the keynote or main speaker, but being asked to give a short devotional is an honor. Do it well and people will remember you for the rest of their lives.

*More About This Episode* Public Speaking Tips: 6 Tools to Help You Get Hired as a Speaker
If you're serious about being a speaker at any level, here's my recommended list of what you need to make available to anyone who can book you for an event:

1) A list of potential topics: I always keep an updated list of keynote and workshop sessions I'm capable of doing.

2) Different length bios:  I keep short, medium, and long biographies that will not only give the planner an idea of my background and areas of expertise but also allow them to easily use them in the program or on the event website.

3) Your official title and byline: Make sure they know who you are! And don't forget a "byline" – which is essentially a one-sentence description of you.

5) A short, well-written introduction: You can't always depend on a conference host or MC to write a good introduction for you, so don't take chances.

6) Your online and social media links: Conferences often publish your social media and website links in the program or put them on the video screen while you speak.

Don't wait until you get asked to speak to prepare these items! It may take a while to pull all of this together, so do it now, and you'll always be ready. Remember – the easier you make it for the people who can hire you as a speaker, the better your chances of getting selected!

*More About This Episode* I've Failed. Now What?
Resilience is the ability to come back from failure. If you've failed or been rejected, these five steps can be the key to help you move past failure and on to success:

1. Don't overthink it. Don't get obsessed thinking about what you could have done better.

2. Don't take it personally. It's easier said than done, but learn to separate criticism of the project from criticism of you.

3. Find objective advice. Find another experienced person that you trust and run the project by them for a second opinion.

4. Ask for constructive criticism. At the moment of failure or rejection, keep a cool head and ask for constructive criticism.

5. Don't let failures derail your dream. It happens! Keep moving forward.

Don't be afraid to fail, especially if you're expanding your tent poles. If you're breaking new ground or trying new things – that's not the time to be timid! That's the time to try things, and if you fail, learn from your failures and move on.

1. Dump the arrogance. Approach your leader or team members with a spirit of humility and a genuine desire to help the organization.

5. Include everyone on the elephant removal team. Make it a team effort to foster collaboration.

6. Don't take sole credit for the removal. Acknowledge the contributions of the team.

*More About This Episode* Public Speaking Techniques: How to Get Invited to Speak at Conferences
Whatever your line of work, speaking gigs are a powerful way to get your name known and your message heard while advancing your career. Here's five tips to help you get invited to speak:

1. Volunteer at conferences. Find the conferences you think you might like to speak at in the future and show up to help. You never know what could happen.

2. Become an expert. Find a niche in your field and become an expert. What have you done in your career that is unique?

3. Plan ahead. Most conferences are planned out a year in advance. Don't wait until the last minute to reach out. (And always be ready for last-minute changes!)

4. You don't need an agent. Don't feel like you need an agent to get invitations. They may be able to negotiate a deal but may not be the one to get you the job as a speaker.

5. Take the time to become a great speaker. Being an expert does not necessarily mean you'll be a great speaker. If you're incorporating software like Powerpoint or Keynote, learn to speak well first; then bring the Powerpoint into it.

Become an amazing speaker!
