Late-Night Talk: Ambrogio Caiani, PhD. When Catholicism flirts with Evil12 Aug 202601:43:52

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

Ambrogio A. Caiani, PhD, is currently Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Kent in Canterbury and lives in Southwark. He is the author of four books which have focused on European History, especially the French Revolution, Napoleon and Catholicism's fraught relationship with modernity. His second book, To Kidnap a Pope: Napoleon and Pius VII 1800-1815, was published by Yale University Press in April 2021, just before the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death and won the 2021 Franco-British Book Prize. His newest book is: Flirting with Evil, The Catholic Church in the Age of Total War and Globalisation. It is a candid portrait of the Faustian pacts made with totalitarian dictatorships and the many scandals (both sexual and financial) that have plagued the Roman church. Despite this litany of poor choices, the book also celebrates the Second Vatican Council and its message of renewal and hope. Indeed, after a pretty dire twentieth century, thanks to the Pontificates of Francis I and Leo XIV, Catholics can look to the twenty-first century in a spirit of hope and renewal.

Solo Session: Your PhD Does Not Have To Lead Every Chat05 Aug 202600:04:52

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

PhD life has a way of leaking into everything, especially conversation. You meet friends for a simple coffee, but the moment there is a pause you fill it with your dissertation, your supervisor feedback, your deadline anxiety, or the latest problem in your methods. Talking about research outside working hours feels normal because the PhD consumes eight or nine hours a day and often stretches into weekends. Yet constant PhD talk can quietly erode your work life balance, weaken friendships, and keep your mind trapped in the same stress loop that makes progress harder.

In this late-night solo session, I share three big forces behind the habit.

— Perfectionism: The pressure to produce “perfect” research can turn normal feedback and rough drafts into a threat to your confidence, and that anxiety often spills into social conversation as reassurance-seeking.

— Academic culture: The jump to independent research, the deadlines, and the overwork mindset can crowd out wellbeing and make it hard to mentally switch off, which can lead to psychological distress and weaker connections if you over-explain your academic world.

— Incuriosity: When you stop asking about sport, films, dating, work, or the everyday joys your friends want to share, closeness fades and invitations can quietly dry up.

I also share practical ways to reset without pretending your PhD does not exist: Give a short summary instead of a deep dive, choose the right moment to share, and rebuild the habit of asking better questions.

Thank you all for tuning in, share it with a friend, and it's been a pleasure!

Solo Session: The only Footballer to play a World Cup and hold a PhD24 Jun 202600:04:52

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

As the World Cup 2026 is underway, did you know there is only one professional footballer who played a World Cup and obtained a PhD?

I introduce to you Turid Knaak, PhD, a former German professional footballer who had 16 caps* for Germany's female national team and played the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France, and top tier clubs such as Arsenal, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Atlético Madrid and VfL Wolfsburg where she retired from professional football in 2022.

What is also brilliant along her footballing career is that she obtained a PhD at the University of Köln in Children's Special Needs Education in 2021 while still playing for Atlético Madrid. Her dissertation research was about the complex learning of basic text production for years 3 and 7 pupils, exploring learning and diagnostic methods and exercises including spelling, oral lexicon and multi-component storytelling to argue the advantages and limitations in the improvement of school marks in pupils' vocabulary, knowledge of the grammar and high quality written language.

Dr Turid Knaak currently works as a football pundit, commentator and tactical expert for DAZN and Sky, and as football analyst at IMPECT.

Thank you all for tuning in, it has been a pleasure!

*2:36: Apologies for my mistake on the video as I noticed on her football profile that she had 16 caps for Germany and not 15 after editing this session.

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

Feeling “behind in life” while you’re deep in a PhD can hit hard, especially when friends seem to be racing through the traditional milestones: a car, a wedding, children, a house, a job title that looks neat on paper. If this resonates with you, then this late-night solo session is for you!

I share with you the following:

—> Why undertaking a PhD is personal rather than a fight against society
—> Rejecting checklists and fixed timelines as a measure of worth
—> Defining what “behind” means and normalising self-criticism
—> Reframing: rest, recharge, and remember a PhD is a marathon

Thank you all for tuning in, it has been a pleasure!

Solo Session: How your Hobbies can help progress your PhD?11 Mar 202600:04:02

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

Many PhD researchers treat hobbies as optional, a luxury to be postponed until after deadlines ease. The reality is the opposite: a modest, regular hobby can make the hard work of a doctorate more creative, sustainable, and social.

In this solo session, I show why and how hobbies are significant for the progression of your PhD journey. I share the following three reasons:

—> Balance;

—> Social Skills;

—> Reminisce lost joys.

Whatever hobby you have that fulfil after hard days of research, the point is not to add pressure. It is to choose small, repeatable habits that return more energy than they cost.

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

What if the best model for a resilient, fulfilling PhD is older than the lab coat? Do you consider yourself as a Renaissance Scholar when you produce knowledge towards PhD success?

In this Late-Night Solo Session, I combine the thoughts of current trend of the Renaissance Man or Woman as a useful frame to your PhD milestones through the following trifecta effect:

—> Curiosity about new knowledge

—> Proactivity in shaping your research and seek opportunities

—> Harmony with yourself and by valuing your closest ones

If this conversation helps you see your PhD with new clarity, share it with a fellow researcher so others can find PhD Lounge! What trait—curiosity, proactivity, or harmony—will you lean into this week?

Thank you all for tuning in, it has been a pleasure!

Solo Session: Engage Wider Audiences with your PhD11 Feb 202600:04:49

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

PhD thesis don't leave the academic circle and are shared towards specialised audiences. But what if they can be presented to other type of audiences? In this late-night talk, I describe how you can share your research when following the code of plain and simple language, storytelling and strong hooks. Here's the breakdown:

. Competitions like the 3 MT and Oak Ridge Laboratory: Your Research in a Nutshell.

. Research Festivals, including keynotes, posters, and short talks.

. Dance your Thesis and Bake your Thesis.

. Casual chats with your PhD peers at pubs while holding pints.

. Presenting your PhD dissertation at a live Stand-Up comedy show?

With time and practice, people will understand your thesis, and you'll form an outreach that strengthens your thinking, delivery and impact. Your research is not a secret. It is a gift—one that grows when more people can hold it.

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

A PhD doesn’t make you smarter.” Bold claim—or honest truth?

The idea that a PhD proves superior intelligence and show how real expertise comes from focus, method, and clear communication. In this solo session, rarity fuels the myth, where limits sit, and how to talk about research without distance or jargon. Here's the breakdown:

Why the “PhDs are smarter” myth sticks
What narrow expertise actually looks like
Methods, questions, and building arguments
The role of patience, graft, and curiosity
How jargon creates distance in outreach
Using plain language to invite dialogue
Setting boundaries on expertise with honesty
Encouraging others to pursue the path by example

Solo Session: The Rule of Three in PhD07 Jan 202600:03:44

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

A doctorate can feel like juggling knives in a windstorm—until you simplify your approach. We break down a practical rule of three that keeps your research clear, effective, and memorable: strategy, management, and communication. Rather than drowning in to‑dos, you’ll learn how to design a flexible plan, turn that plan into steady weekly progress, and share your work so real people understand why it matters.

We start with strategy as the anchor for your PhD. You’ll hear how to focus your question, align aims with your supervisor’s interests, and set milestones that adapt to new data and unexpected detours. Then we move to management, where we prioritise high‑impact tasks, schedule deep work when energy is highest, and build simple systems—weekly sprints, daily next steps, and realistic buffers around supervision meetings—that reduce stress and create momentum. Finally, we explore communication beyond conferences: using plain language, relatable examples, and honest stories about setbacks to connect with undergraduates, colleagues outside your field, and the wider public.

Across the conversation, we highlight small habits with outsized returns: treating research as a pipeline, tracking lead indicators you control, and pressure‑testing ideas by explaining them over coffee. You’ll leave with a lean toolkit for navigating uncertainty, focusing on what matters, and turning complex ideas into messages that stick. If you’re a current PhD, a prospective applicant, or a supervisor looking to guide your students, this is a clear, human framework you can use right away.

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

In this solo session, I share a candid reflection on passing the viva, then map the four pillars of a modern PhD: funding, mental health, career strategy, and networking.

Practical stories, honest stats, and a nudge to build options beyond the thesis Viva highlights and next steps. Funding sources, tradeoffs, and timing. Mental health risks, supports, and pacing. Academic vs industry routes and optionality. Entrepreneurial mindset for uncertain markets. Networking as social capital, not transactions. Online presence for visibility and community. Choosing the PhD with eyes open.

Late-Night Talk: Elena Hoffer, PhD. Life Beyond Academia: Transitioning From PhD to Industry, and more20 Aug 202502:06:46

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

The transition from academia to industry remains one of the most challenging journeys for PhDs, yet it's a path that half of all doctoral graduates will take. Elena Hoffer, PhD and founder of https://www.alma.me/ shares her journey from academia to entrepreneurship and explains how she helps PhDs and PostDocs transitioning to industry careers after reaching over 100,000 LinkedIn followers.

• PhDs often struggle to translate their academic skills into language industry employers understand
• Networking is about relationship building over time, not transactional requests to strangers
• True value of a PhD lies in who you become during the process, not just the thesis produced
• Industry employers value PhDs for their problem-solving abilities, resilience, and "get things done" mentality
• Most successful job searches focus on 1-2 targeted positions rather than applying broadly
• Taking courses in areas like project management signals clear career direction to potential employers
• Time management and prioritization are essential for balancing entrepreneurship with content creation
• The PhD degree remains valuable but could evolve to better prepare graduates for diverse career paths

Late-Night Interview: Eilian Richmond, PhD. 3MT, Earthbound, Literary Inconsistencies in the Bible, Balance between PhD and social life and more...27 Nov 202401:42:30

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates,

Eilian Richmond is a PhD graduate from Swansea University, who wrote his dissertation about the literary contradictions and hyper linkage within the Bible using his upcoming novel Earthbound as a reference.

Earthbound is a satire whom Eilian in his comical and satirical tones, challenges the biblical scenes by mixing his doctoral arguments with his satirical scenes based on biblical episodes across his novel.

Strong language, puns and (doctoral) criticism about the literary contradictions across the Bible are mentioned. Listener discretion is advised for those who have read the Bible and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and God's words.

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

Happy new year 2023, and I kickoff PhD Lounge into the new year with a Late-Night Interview!

Louisa Hardwick is a PhD student based at Swansea University in Tourism within a Business Management context, researching Virtual Reality (VR) for people with limited physical mobility.

Louisa's passion for travelling and background with disabled people led her to explore a gap in VR and how it should suit people with limited physical movement, and who cannot have the chance to travel to a country they wished. With VR, Louisa's ambition is to change the paradigm of this new reality which is becoming more popular for the newest generations, but also for older ones! The chosen case studies for Louisa's research were Machu Picchu, Kenya and Borneo

To know more about Louisa's research, check her Twitter: @louisabhardwick

Thank you all for tuning in, it has been a pleasure!

Side note: In the introduction of the session, I forgot to mention Machu Picchu, and only mentioned Kenya and Borneo, my apologies for that mistake.

Solo Session: The PhD Iceberg Explained: Decision to go for a PhD, what to ponder?18 Oct 202200:44:27

Thank you for tuning in to PhD Lounge, you'll become a Doctor of Philosophy by immersing yourself into the latest topics of the PhD Universe

Students and Graduates!

The PhD Lounge Podcast is back, and with a new session series!

While I am still tremendously busy in researching and writing my PhD thesis, as well as trying to submit abstracts to participate into conferences, I am still emerged into the PhD Lounge Podcast to create new content around PhD and seeking PhD students to become my guests.

First of all, congratulations to all students who entered in university this academic year, wishing all their best in this new journey that will demand from you in three or four years.

For this new podcast series at the PhD Lounge, I am introducing the Iceberg theory, created by American journalist Ernest Hemingway, into the context of the PhD. This first episode of the PhD Iceberg explained, I describe six main points I personally consider where any student could think about once deciding to apply for a PhD. The decision of applying for a PhD would be the very first step which the any student starts to climb the iceberg until reaching the graduation results, which is the tip of the iceberg, and what is below slowly becomes ignored. With this new series, I try to call the attention of students and the general audience what a PhD is really about and what the title of Doctor of Philosophy heavily carries behind, literally years and years of research, writing and discussing.

I hope you all enjoy hearing this first session of the PhD Iceberg Explained series.

Thank you all for listening, it has been a pleasure!
