This is a must-hear podcast for pet owners wanting access to the latest in pet quality of life and longevity. Whether your pet has fur, feathers, scales or shells, Cathy and Chris believe in treating your pet as a whole, both mind and body. Continuing a collaboration that began in 2003, Cathy and Chris share the gift of gab as well as their network in the pet rehab community.  Using their vast expertise as Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioners (CCRPs), Cathy Symons CVT, CCRP, and Chris Cranston MPT, CCRP, offer relevant information and provocative interviews on their podcast, PetAbility. With an emphasis on mobility and independence, their show is about improving function, restoring confidence, alleviating fear, providing mental stimulation, and easing pain to help your pets live their best lives. Read on for more information about Cathy and Chris…

Cathy Symons is the author of Blind Devotion: Enhancing the Lives of Blind and Visually Impaired Dogs. She was inspired to write this book after her first pug, Booda, lost his sight at the age of seven. Several years later, Cathy adopted a blind pug named Digger and wrote a children’s book, Watching Out for Digger, which she uses as a teaching tool for young children to learn about living with a disabled dog.

After fifteen years of practice as a veterinary technician, Cathy went on to study canine rehabilitation at the University of Tennessee. In 2003, Cathy was one of the first thirty-six people in the world to become a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. Shortly thereafter, Cathy was instrumental in establishing one of the foremost veterinary rehabilitation centers in the United States, the Sterling Impression Animal Rehabilitation Center of New England. She continues to follow the latest options in pet rehabilitation, including digital thermal imaging and laser therapy, and is currently working on her third book, Senior Dogs: Maintaining Mobility and Independence.

Cathy resides in the New England area with her husband and their pug, Mac. Mac is a very confident little nugget who enjoys doing nose work with his mom.

Chris Cranston has 20 years of experience in pet rehabilitation. She is excited to share her knowledge and reach a wide pet-loving audience through the PetAbility podcast. Chris loves seeing that light bulb go off when educating pet owners, so a podcast seemed like a natural fit.

Chris started her career as a physical therapist (PT) – with people. When she moved to the Boston area in 2002, she saw it as an opportunity to do something different, so she combined her existing PT skills with her passion for animals. Chris became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner through the University of Tennessee in 2004, one of the first 100 persons in the world to receive this certification. In addition to her CCRP designation, she has a Masters of Physical Therapy (1989) and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology (1987) from the University of Iowa.

Chris had a successful mobile practice, consulted with a myriad of general practices and specialty clinics, and started the physical rehabilitation service for a large multi-specialty and emergency organization in the Greater Boston region. All this was before founding FlowDog, a stand-alone, full-service small animal physical rehabilitation facility in Waltham, MA. In 2017, Chris sold her business to the esteemed Angell Animal Medical Center of Boston, and is now podcasting, consulting for a tech company in the veterinary space, providing concierge mobile pet rehab, and working getting a product to market that will help our pets. Of course, Chris prioritizes enriching the lives of her twin Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Julep & Baxter, while indulging in all the snuggles they are willing to share with her!

It's Not "Just" Arthritis, it's a Disease!

Season 5 · Episode 18

mardi 3 septembre 2024Duration 51:17

What is something that 80% of dogs get after the age of 8, that cats are crafty at hiding, and that prevents birds from perching? It's arthritis: arth (= joint) + itis (= inflammation) and it's no joke! Just ask anybody who has undergone a total joint replacement due to this debilitating disease, a disease that can become so painful that it severely impacts the ability to participate in life's daily activities. In this episode, Cathy and Chris demystify what arthritis is, describe causes of arthritis, discuss how arthritis is diagnosed, and depict how arthritis can be managed. Hint: it's multimodal!

Special Needs Animal Rescue League with Christina Powell

Season 5 · Episode 8

mardi 16 avril 2024Duration 58:58

Listen as Christina Powell tells us the story of Special Needs Animal Rescue League (SNARL). This SNARL is bound to make you smile! What started as a personal rescue of one wobbly German Shepherd became a multi-organization, multi-state/province, two-country machine that takes "red list" dogs from other shelters and finds them their forever homes. In other words, SNARL says "yes" to those who have been overlooked and placed in high risk situations due to their special needs, primarily neurological disabilities. Lee Ridings of Furgiven Animal Sanctuary joins us to elaborate on the collaboration of their two rescues to benefit the most dogs. As Lee says, these dogs may be different, but they are not broken. Each has so much love to give if just given the chance. Whether it's financial support, volunteerism, or foster/adoption, next time consider special needs dogs - they need us.

“Covering” Beds – considerations for your pet’s best sleep!

Season 1 · Episode 20

mardi 3 novembre 2020Duration 42:21

This show covers everything you’ve ever thought about, or NOT thought about, when it comes to your pet's bed. If you’re like us, you get a bit overwhelmed when it’s time to select the right bed for your best friend. There is more to it than size and color. We will help you come up with a checklist of considerations to aid in picking out that perfect bed:

·                        What position does your dog sleep in?

·                        Can they get in/out of the bed with ease?

·                        What materials is the bed made of - both inside and out?

·                        Is it washable?

·                        Does this bed warm or cool your pet?

·                        Is it durable?

·                        Is it suitable for outdoors?

·                        Does it have a liner?

·                        Is the cover removable?

Ain’t Misbehavin’ with Behave Atlanta

Season 1 · Episode 19

mardi 20 octobre 2020Duration 58:41

PetAbility teams up with Behave Atlanta to explore how  trainers and behaviorists  intersect with physical rehabilitation so that pets may live their best lives. Have you really ever thought about how your pet’s emotional health might affect their physical health? Or why it may be important, even vital, to have a well-trained, emotionally balanced pet? Skills such as leash manners, a strong recall, and drop it/leave it can be the difference between life and death. And a well-behaved pet means they can  join you on exciting adventures out in the community, further enhancing the bond between you. We also discuss  how stress impacts your pet’s health and how to recognize the signs of stress,  including cortisol spikes. Heck, what is cortisol and why should you care? How do you keep your dog below their threshold by creating a Zen zone or taking a cortisol vacation? And did you know that your stress level can actually be mirrored by your pet? Yikes! Finally, think how different a visit to the vet might be if it was a wonderfully positive experience because they enjoy everything from the car ride there to being handled for their physical exam.  We think after listening to this episode, you will not only see your pet differently and focus on their emotional well-being in addition to physical well-being. Just like humans,  body and soul cannot be compartmentalized – each impacts the other.

Believing in Grieving with Laurie Levine, LMHC

Season 1 · Episode 18

mardi 6 octobre 2020Duration 58:14

If you’ve ever had the profound pleasure of loving a pet, you’ve undoubtedly experienced grief when they pass. But the loss of a pet is distinctive because our relationship with our pets is unique: non-verbal, ever-present, physical in nature, and full of unconditional love. We often have longterm and intense relationships with our pets that we have with no other human on earth. So to feel grief when our pet dies is real, wrenching, and normal. Laurie Levine helps us to understand how this loss can feel invisible in a society that has difficulty with death and dying, thus grieving the loss of a pet can feel very lonely. Laurie explains that grief is the other side of love. Pet grief is different; it is not a linear process, but a journey. In this episode we discuss the emotions of relief, guilt, and even embarrassment when our pet dies. Laurie discusses the importance of memorializing our pets and gives advice on rituals to help us through the grieving process. Sudden death vs. prolonged decline - how does this impact grief? Is there such a thing as anticipatory grief? What is a good death? How is euthanasia not only a responsibility, but also a gift? Finally, how can we support others who are grieving the loss of their pet?

Laurie offers phone, virtual, or personal sessions, as well as drop-in support groups in Arlington, MA, at SleepyDogVeterinary.

Prosthetics and Orthotics with OrthoPets founder, Martin Kaufmann

Season 1 · Episode 17

mardi 22 septembre 2020Duration 01:05:37

"It's always about the one." Those are the words from founder, Martin Kaufman, of OrthoPets. After helping more than 25,000 pets world-wide since its inception in 2003, Martin is still driven by serving that next pet in need. This podcast is packed with information: starting with describing what an orthotic (brace) and prosthetic (replacement limb segment) are, to learning if your pet might be a candidate, to the team-supported ordering process, and finally helping your pet adjust. Our pets naturally have the willingness and determination to succeed despite physical challenges they may face. We will discuss OrthoPets' most-requested and far superior custom knee brace for treatment of cruciate ligament tears as well as  custom braces for elbows, wrists/paws, ankles/paws, and shoulders. Listen to how Naki'o, a dog who lost all of his limbs to frostbite, thrived after receiving four prosthetic limbs (first ever!) and simultaneously transformed Martin's thought processes. We'll even talk about the orthotic for a goat named Jerry! Yes, a goat! The bottom line is that orthotics for an injury and prosthetics for a partially missing limb are all about improving function, decreasing pain, and  making mobility easier.  And we have the opportunity and responsibility to provide an improved quality of life for them via an orthotic or prosthetic. Let's do this together!

CAT-apaulting into Cat Rehab with Lillian Ciardelli, MA, ACAAB

Season 1 · Episode 16

mardi 8 septembre 2020Duration 01:01:01

Despite cats clearly being superior to all other beings (at least that's what the cats tell us), sometimes they need a little help from us lowly humans due to injury, disease, or genetic conditions. But how on earth do you get a cat to cooperate with a physical rehabilitation program? Anybody who knows anything about cats, knows that a cat isn't going to do anything he or she doesn't want to, right? WRONG! Listen as professional animal behaviorist Lillian Ciardelli tells the story of Sal, a rescue cat who had a front-limb amputation and hip surgery at the same time due to a trauma! Yes, Sal had a bit of a rough start in life, but Lillian applied her behavior training to the vet's prescribed rehabilitation plan, using Sal's natural  cat instincts and her own creativity for a successful outcome! She examined everything from his play style to what motivates him while being careful to avoid  stress. Turns out cats are highly trainable and benefit from physical rehabilitation after all.

Eddie's Wheels, "pet tested, pet approved!" with Leslie Grinnell

Season 1 · Episode 15

mardi 25 août 2020Duration 53:35

Listen to Leslie Grinnell, owner of Eddie’s Wheels describe how she and her husband Eddie, a mechanical engineer, created their first wheelchair for their beloved dog, Buddha, over 30 years ago. This labor of love turned into a business in 1999 that has manufactured over 25,000 custom mobility carts for pets! The patented unique welded saddle distinguishes Eddie’s Wheels from other carts, and they now have over 2,500 saddle designs. It is akin to riding a bike vs. hanging in a rock climbing harness, allowing your pet to experience consistency and start from a point of stability. Serving special dogs all around the world from 2 to 240 pounds, Eddie’s Wheels restores independence for every animal customer. But wait, it doesn’t end there! The company has created a cart with a variable axel that adjusts as your pet ages or their disease progresses. They make carts for dogs with amputations or simply needing a little assist after cruciate surgery. They can accommodate any skeleton (learn about Harry!).  Not only do these carts work for dogs, cats, and rabbits, but also aardvarks!! What? Listen to learn how a cart might give you or someone you know, their dog back. A cart isn’t the end, but rather a new beginning as mobility and independence is restored.

The Extraordinary Lives of 2-Legged Dogs with differently-abled dog enthusiast, Domenick Scudera

Season 1 · Episode 14

mardi 11 août 2020Duration 43:58

What do you get when you have three noses, three BIG hearts, and six legs? You get a pack of extraordinary two-legged dogs! Meet Cyrus, Lucky, and Deuce! Cyrus, a little Terrier cross from CA, is the cutest little dog with the most soulful eyes who was born with only hind limbs. Lucky is from Egypt and was left for dead on the street after likely being hit by a car, and has only front limbs. Then there's Deuce, who runs with a pack of able-bodied dogs at the dog park on only his right front and right hind limbs. Although Cyrus and Lucky have wheelchairs to assist their mobility, their owner, Domenick Scudera, says Deuce pulls him on leash with his sturdy, solid, and stable frame. All are certified therapy dogs and all are Domenick's family pets. He and his dogs are on a mission to inspire and give hope to people who are experiencing similar challenges. These dogs dispel misconceptions and provide joy to all who meet them. According to Domenick, they are like "regular dogs" at home, with all the same routines because "dogs only know what they have, not what they don't." There are many life lessons to learn from these dogs, if we take the time to listen and learn.
