Introducing Kimberly, the founder and CEO of Kimberly's Kritter Care in Charleston, SC! Her journey began in 2016 when she bid farewell to her corporate career, following her heart's calling and love for animals.

Starting out as a one-woman show, Kimberly dedicated herself to providing impeccable pet care services for busy pet parents and never expected to be more than a solo provider. Less than 8 months into the business, she quickly recognized the growing demand for reliable pet care, so she enlisted the help of independent contractors, expanding the scope of her services and touching the lives of even more adorable kritters.

However, it was in 2021 that Kimberly made a game-changing decision. Determined to elevate the level of care provided, she transitioned from independent contractors to building a dedicated team of professionals who shared her passion for animals. With a team of six part-time employees, Kimberly's Kritter Care now stands stronger than ever before.

Thanks to her team and her unwavering commitment and renewed focus on the business, Kimberly's Kritter Care has witnessed remarkable growth. In 2022, the business grew by 76%, and the momentum has continued with a 49% increase through the first half of 2023.

Kimberly is excited to see what the future holds and looks forward to growing the business and expanding its reach even further!

Kim Ottone Tank, owner of both Apronstrings and Staffingstrings, joins the show to help us understand what it really means to hire an employee. Kim breaks down what the differences are between an employee and an independent contractor, how that impacts our businesses, and how to understand the true costs of each.

Main topcs

  • Employees becoming more popular

  • Are they an IC or employee?

  • Understanding Costs and Benefits

  • Worry about managing?

  • Building a team

Main takeaway: Some people don’t want to run a business, they want to work for a business. Those are the perfect employee for your business.

About our guest:

She hired her first employee in 1996, after carefully researching hiring practices in the industry. Her staff have always been employees, covered by her bond, liability insurance and worker's compensation policy. All of her staff receive intensive ongoing training and all are either certified in pet first aid, or are currently enrolled in a class.

Founder and CEO, Kim has always known she was destined to work with animals and has devoted her life to working in pet care. After living in Concord for many years, she relocated her family to Pollock Pines, CA, in 2016, to raise goats and (more) chickens. She has 4 cats and a dog as well. Kim splits her time between the Bay Area and El Dorado County to maintain a close connection with her sitters, her clients and their loving pets. When not working, she loves running, kayaking, mentoring other pet sitters and exploring El Dorado Wine Country.

419: Selling the Gap with Rachelle Steele06 Sep 202301:01:41

How do you sell your services to potential clients? While many of us believe that our service quality speaks for itself, many clients will have additional questions or needs that we must address. With 30 years of high-end retail experience, Rachelle Steele, owner of Loving Arms Pet Services, shares insights into guiding clients through the purchasing process. Rachelle explains how to ask good questions to better understand how you can serve your client and how using the Platinum Rule can help you meet your clients' needs.

Main topics

  • Making space in your day
  • Let the client define their needs
  • Follow the Platinum Rule
  • Growing in confidence

Main takeaway: Asking probing questions allows you to better understand where your services fit in with the client’s needs.

About our guest:

I have always had a profound connection with animals, particularly those who are shy, sick, or injured. Driven by my passion for animals, I founded Loving Arms Pet Services (LAPS). As an animal rescuer specializing in caring for animals with special needs, I recognized the significant challenge of finding a trustworthy caregiver to look after them while I took a vacation or had some time away. This realization motivated me to establish my own business, offering pet care services to enable others to take breaks without worrying about their pets' well-being at home. I hold a deep affection for all animals, but I have a special place in my heart for seniors and those with special needs, such as blindness, deafness, or health issues. My approach involves taking the time to truly understand each animal's unique personality, needs, and desires. To achieve this, I actively listen to their communication cues and ensure they receive the utmost care and attention. While pet owners are away, I believe it is crucial to keep them updated regularly, whether through messages, pictures, or short videos, to provide peace of mind. Putting myself in the customer's shoes is a priority for me, as I strive to create a relaxing experience for them during their time away. My expertise in positive-based training methods allows me to determine what motivates each dog and effectively communicate with the family to meet their specific needs and requirements. I understand that dogs communicate and comprehend differently from humans, and my goal is to bridge that gap and facilitate a harmonious relationship between the pets and their families. My experience working in animal rescue for over 25 years has exposed me to a diverse range of dogs with various backgrounds and issues, granting me valuable insights and tools to work effectively with them. Additionally, I actively support foster and adoptive homes, enabling me to provide expert guidance on the best approach for their pups' well-being. I firmly believe that there is no "one size fits all" training or care plan, and my approach is tailored to each individual pet's unique circumstances. I am eager to extend my services to pet owners from all walks of life and to assist in caring for animals throughout all stages and ages of life.

414: Dealing with Self Doubt21 Aug 202300:23:19

Have you ever experienced self doubt? It can come from many areas; lack of information, conflicting information, or internal conflicts of beliefs and values. As a business owner, we’re required to do hard things in our business, which means we’re likely to encounter doubt and insecurity more often. We break down the relationship between fear and doubt and how to keep moving forward. Doubt doesn’t have to mean the end of anything. It should act as a trigger to do something different or seek out help.

Main topics

  • Why we doubt
  • Difference between fear and doubt
  • Overcoming doubt
  • Committing to something

Main takeaway: Doubt is natural, but it's crucial not to let it paralyze you. Instead, use it as motivation to prepare, plan, and persevere. And always remember: Everyone has faced setbacks and doubts themselves from time to time; what sets them apart is how they respond.

401: How to Retain the Best Clients with Candace D’Agnolo05 Jul 202300:49:41

How do you keep clients coming back over and over? Candace D’Agnolo, from Pet Boss Nation, joins the show to discuss how to create raving fans of your business. Candace breaks down strategies for building long-lasting relationships with clients, and how to help them fall in love with your services. She also shows us ways to increase the perceived value of your business, while anticipating your client’s needs. Finally, Candace encourages us to implement follow-up services as a way to keep clients invested and engaged.

Main Topics

  • Building lasting relationships
  • Increasing perceived value
  • Anticipating needs
  • Follow-up services

Main takeaway: If you approach your clients from a place of service - it’s never selling.

About our guest:

From failing to scaling, broke to naming her price and selling businesses, and from chained to her storefront to traveling the world, Candace has experienced first-hand the extreme struggles and ultimate successes of pet entrepreneurship since 2004.

The one thing she wished she had but couldn't find was a support system of industry peers who believed in community over competition, mentors who could guide her, and a resource for the best marketing ideas around.

Candace owned and operated three brick and mortar pet businesses with 27 employees before she turned 30 called Dogaholics. And by the time the recession rolled around in 2010, she was buried in debt--to the tune of $400,000. WOAH. Despite the outward appearance of success, her health, wealth and happiness were so far out of reach, she wondered when she'd ever see them again.

But then, the tide changed. She invested in the support she desperately needed from mentors and went on to hit the multiple 7-figure revenue mark. Even after selling three pet businesses, one to Bentley's Pet Stuff and another to Destination Pet (together totaling a multiple 7 figure exit), her proudest moment was actually going from a negative $5,000 in the bank on the regular to three months worth of business expenses saved. It proved she was on the right track and could do anything!

Her original brick and mortar retail pet supply stores transformed into multiple revenue streams including retail, grooming, doggy daycare, boarding, training, dog walking, play park memberships, online informational products, books and merchandise.

Pet Boss Nation was founded in 2017 because Candace knew the pet industry was craving connection, needed leadership from the trenches and some business secrets to add to all the love of health and wellness knowledge for animals!

Having created a community from 0-4,000+ in a short amount of time, Candace and the Pet Boss Nation team now teach business growth strategies through coursework, seminars, private sessions, brand partnerships, one-on-one sessions, and through industry magazine columns, webinars and blogs.

399: Running a Multi-Dimensional Business with Susan Morin28 Jun 202301:00:47

What does it mean to run a multi-dimensional business? Not only do you offer a range of services, but you also have a lot going on every day. Susan Morin, owner of Susan’s Pampered Pet Care, shares how she’s piloted a growing business. She discusses how she highlights the strengths of her business to attract her target clients and walks through the balance of running a business to meet her client’s needs, while also enjoying the day to day operations.

Main topic

  • Piloting a growing business

  • Hitting burnout

  • A multi-dimensional business

  • Matching your clients needs

Main takeaway: Sometimes you have to make big changes when you learn a hard lesson.

About our guest:

I began by working off of apps like Rover, Wag and the exclusive cat app Meowtel. I quickly realized the limitations these apps offer and became so busy that I decided to officially form Susan's Pampered Pet Care, LLC and tweak my business to what I believe works the best with my clients, Molly and myself in mind. I have completed multiple certifications to help expand my knowledge in pet care and also in case of emergencies! I do things differently than a lot of other pet care companies in order to keep your pet's best interest and safety as a top priority at all times.

As a pet owner myself that has needed pet care, I realized that pet owners need a compassionate and reliable pet sitter. They need someone who could take their fears away. So in May 2020, I decided to dedicate a full time business to my true passion - animals.

I started building my clientele in 2020. I'm so thankful for each and every client I've met since I have formed this company! Even if you only needed me once, I'll never forget your fur babies and the experience each one has taught me. It's been an amazing journey and I look forward to many more years and challenges of what's to come.

I have taken care of blind animals and pets with severe anxieties. I will administer meds as needed. I like to build relationships with animals so even if you are looking to board only one time, I want to ensure your pet is comfortable with me. To ensure your pet's best possible comfort level, I offer several pre-boarding visits, as needed, to get them familiar with my home. This will help them feel safe and less anxious in new surroundings when you are away from them and give them added security in your absence. Pets do get more anxious without their owners and also can behave differently in other's homes, so I try to offer something different then the traditional pet sitting most are used to. That's why I offer free meet and greets as well as boarding trials together with my dog Molly to get your pet comfortable. ❤️

She shares how her business has evolved and how it wasn't always easy to leave services behind. Stephanie focuses on client education and fostering relationships through a personal touch. She also gives great advice around implementing a power hour to stay organized in your business and how she's navigated bringing on a manager in her business.

Main topics

  • Creating out of necessity

  • Refocusing

  • Stop offering a service

  • DO PHONE CALLS

  • Staying organized

Main takeaway: You have to keep taking care of business while you’re trying to gain business.

About our guest:

Stephanie Brown was born with a passion for animals which was instilled by her mother at a young age. Always having family pets to love and horses to care for she knew from an early age she’d spend her life devoting herself to loving and caring for pets

After traditional college, she found herself back with animals and pursuing a career as a Large Animal Veterinary Technician  with one of the country’s top Equine Vet’s.  After some time, she found herself caring for patients whose owners had a planned trip coming up and had an “unexpected” pet emergency…so she found a niche, not only her skill set as a vet tech, but to be able to help the “humans” in those pets’ lives, to comfortably leave with ease knowing their pets were getting the best care.   Providing the personal touch and keeping both pets and owners happy is when Happy Trails came to life!!  Originally started in 2002, as Happy Trails Professional Pet Sitting & Equine Services, the main focus was special needs pets and a strong presence of horse care in every aspect.

Over the past two decades, Stephanie has transformed Happy Trails, now known as Happy Trail’s Pet Sitting & Dog Walking Services, into one of the county’s top Professional Pet Sitting and Dog Walking service providers.  The company’s primary focus has now shifted to mostly Dogs and Cats and Hobby Farm care, always eager to help the special needs pets.    Winning several prestigious awards including Next Doors Top Company and Morris County’s Best Of awards to name a few!  Community care and support is super important and a huge reason for Happy Trails Success, so giving back any way possible is always the goal from providing baskets for tricky trays, supporting local sports teams, dropping off donations for our local food pantry and giving back to our local rescues whenever possible!

Stephanie’s goal is always to provide the best, most professional and loving care and has created an amazing team of pet care professionals that go above and beyond for every pet every time!  Happy Trail’s Team culture is heavy on Happiness…as happy team happy pets!!

Stephanie is proud to live and work in Long Valley NJ with her two boys, Zac and Patrick and her husband of 15 years, Alex!!

When she isn’t working in the office or out in the field caring for pets, she enjoys hiking with her rescue pups or competing in Agility with her rescue westie Grayson!

About the Board of Directors:

Savanna Westwood - President

“Hello! I am Savanna Owner and Founder of The Savvy Sitter, Pet Sitting and Dog Walking, LLC. I have grown up with animals all my life and enjoy spending time with them. I have lived in the Winter Garden and Windermere Area for over 30 Years. Though I do not have any animals myself, I love taking care of them and giving them the cuddles, playtime, and treats they deserve. I am an active equestrian, big dogs and horses do not frighten me. When I am not taking care of your Fur Friends, you can find me reading, practicing archery, riding, and figuring out ways to provide additional and great services to our clients!”

Doug Keeling - Vice President

“I’m Doug the Dog Guy, and I’m the owner and founder of Bad to the Bone Pet Care. I began pet sitting and dog walking in the Fall of 2013 because I missed my childhood best friend, a Jack Russell named Skip, and because I wanted to combine my passions for animal welfare and entrepreneurship. Bad to the Bone Pet Care was born in 2014, and we have since had the privilege of working with thousands of pets across Northeast and Central Florida. We have won multiple awards for our premium-level professional pet sitting and dog walking, including Pet Sitter of the Year 2023, Best Jacksonville Dog Walking Company 2018-2022, and Best Pet Sitting Service in Northeast Florida 2016 & 2017. I tell everyone I meet, “this is a dream come true for a dream I didn’t know I had.”

Amber Van Denzen Suarez- Secretary

“Amber is the founder of Atta Boy! Animal Care. She has been working in the animal field for over 16 years. She started in the field by working in the horse industry – stable hand and pet sitter. She then trained as a local Veterinary Kennel hand, Veterinary Assistant and then an Emergency Veterinary Technician for both small and large animals for over 13 years. She has a bachelors of Animal Science from University of Florida.”

Heidi Lewis-Pracko - Treasurer

“Throughout my childhood, the running joke was always, “Where’s Heidi? She’s probably with the dogs.” In 4th grade, my family adopted our Welsh Corgi, Angel - the light of my life all the way into college. When she passed away, I was devastated. Luckily for me, 4 months later, we brought another Corgi into the family. I named her Hope, because she was doing exactly that, bringing hope to our family. Thus...Heidi & Hope Pet Services! My true passion came when I began pet sitting on the weekends. Pet sitting showed me the rewards of getting to work with animals one-on-one. I LOVE being the only one to care for people’s pets and being relied upon to do so. I finally made the full-time move to Naples in 2016, where I feel lucky every day getting to live in the place that I vacationed all the time growing up. I immediately got into pet sitting upon my move and the rest is history!”

383: Setting Your Mindset and Doing Hard Things with Colleen Sedgwick03 May 202300:41:33

What does it mean to do mindset work? As a business owner, we encounter so many trials and tough situations. Having the right mindset doesn’t just help us when times are tough, it helps us take advantage of when times are good. Colleen Sedgwick, The Pet Nanny Coach, joins us to share how she approaches mindset work, and the importance of being intentional with what we focus on. Instead of mental toughness, Colleen shares the idea of how surrendering leads to more flexibility and resiliency. She encourages us to tackle hard things so we can grow personally, but cautions against pursuing anything that feels like suffering.

Main topics:

  • What is mindset work?
  • Mental toughness
  • Why tackle hard things
  • Audience of one

Main takeaway: You can’t create on the outside, what you don’t feel on the inside.

About our guest:

Colleen Sedgwick is a Pet Sitting Business Owner, Entrepreneur, Wife and Mom, and she teaches pet business owners how to launch, grow and multiply their businesses 10K or more a month in revenue. Colleen transformed her once teeny-tiny, itty-bitty pet sitting business into a thriving and lucrative enterprise that services over two thousand clients on The Main Line of Philadelphia. Through her ultra-informative blog, videos, online courses and group coaching programs, she’s empowered and taught countless other pet sitters how to turn their passion for pets into paychecks. And when she’s not turning her knowledge of the pet sitting industry into blog posts, programs or courses, you will find her loving on her family, hustling on the tennis or paddle court or watching BRAVO TV! Colleen says, “I’m living proof that you can create a purpose-filled and lucrative business based on your love for animals and that it’s never too late to follow your heart and live your passion.”
