Are You Allowed to Be Happy When Someone You Love Isn’t?30 Sep 202600:32:01

On today’s episode of Perspective Shift, Dr. Robyne unpacks a question so many parents, caregivers, partners, and leaders may have wondered: Am I allowed to be happy when someone I care about isn’t? She explores what happens when we become the “happiness coordinator” for the people around us, taking responsibility for everyone else’s emotions and trying to create lives free from frustration, disappointment, or discomfort. Along the way, she shares a memorable story about how a dog with its head out a car window helped her and her kids turn a difficult morning around and introduces a practical framework for unplugging from someone else’s emotional state so we can care deeply without taking on what isn’t ours to carry.

This is a conversation about caring without carrying, being compassionate without trying to fix, and remembering that someone else’s feelings can be real and important without becoming ours to hold.

Struggling With Screen Time? Here’s What We’re Missing | Jake Ernst23 Sep 202600:43:41

On today’s episode, Dr. Robyne and social worker and psychotherapist Jake Ernst take a closer look at one of the questions many parents, educators, and adults are asking: Are screens actually the problem? What if the bigger question is what we’re doing on our screens, what we’re missing when we’re on them, and whether our relationships are still intact? How do we help kids practice sitting with discomfort, communicating face-to-face, managing their attention, and doing hard things in a world designed to keep us scrolling? Plus, a closer look at how dopamine-seeking plays a role in our attachment to devices, why the first and last seven minutes of the day matter so much, and why relationships may be the most important technology we have.

You Experienced a Failure. Before You Blame Yourself, Do This.16 Sep 202600:37:55

Have you ever come up short on something you worked really hard for?

In this solo episode, Dr. Robyne shares a story from a recent ultra-endurance challenge that didn't unfold the way she had hoped. Drawing on neuropsychology and her experience on and off the mountain, she reflects on what it means to face disappointment, recognize where we may have dropped the ball, and still meet ourselves with radical self-compassion. She explores why harsh self-criticism can keep us from learning from our mistakes, while self-compassion creates the space to reflect, integrate, and grow. Along the way, she shares powerful lessons about choosing hard, the people who show up when we need them most, and why an experience can still be meaningful even when the outcome isn't what we expected.

This week on Life by Design, we're doing something a little different.

Rather than sitting in the host's chair, Dr. Robyne is the guest.

In this special episode, originally recorded for Jordana Goldlist's podcast, Who Judges the Judge?, Jordana interviews Dr. Robyne about her journey, from struggling in school with undiagnosed ADHD, to being institutionalized at 16, to surviving a near-death car accident, and how her mother’s question, “How do you want to feel?” instead of “What are your goals?” changed everything.

Together, they explore the lessons she has learned about healing and belonging, the people who helped her find her way when she could not yet see a future for herself, and the experiences that continue to inform the work she does today with leaders, educators, teams, and high performers around the world.

The Fear of Hope with Dr. Ross Ellenhorn20 May 202600:42:37

In this week’s episode, Dr. Robyne welcomes Dr. Ross Ellenhorn, psychotherapist, social worker, and CEO of one of the most robust community integration programs in the United States, for a deeply thoughtful conversation about hope, mental health, and human connection. Together, they explore the fear of hope and how repeated disappointment can make hoping again feel vulnerable and risky, leading people to protect themselves by staying the same.

Drawing from decades of experience supporting individuals navigating psychiatric diagnoses, addiction, and recovery, Dr. Ellenhorn challenges the narrative of “brokenness” and highlights the importance of rebuilding social connection, self-worth, and faith in oneself and others. They also reflect on why embracing different ways of being, cultivating belonging, and caring for each other are not only essential to healing, but acts of resistance and hope in an uncertain world.

A Life Shaped by Story and a Mother’s Strength with Ernest Hillen06 May 202600:32:45

In this special episode, Dr. Robyne sits down with Canadian writer, journalist, and longtime Saturday Night editor Ernest Hillen. At 92, he reflects on a life shaped by hardship and resilience, from years in internment camps as a young boy during the Second World War to building a new life in Canada.

At the heart of this conversation is a powerful tribute to his mother, a woman whose strength, wisdom, and gift for turning anything into an adventure became a guiding light for her sons, even in the darkest of times. Through his stories, Ernest offers a perspective on what it means to keep going: to find humor where we can, hold onto hope, and move forward when so much is outside of our control.

This episode is a reminder of the legacy we carry, the power of the stories that shape us, and the small, steady choices that carry us through.

In today’s episode, Dr. Robyne welcomes author, personal branding strategist, and entrepreneur Rory Vaden for a practical and inspiring conversation about what it really takes to create lasting change, both for ourselves and for the people we serve. Together, they explore why the highest performers don’t chase shortcuts but instead commit to doing the difficult, meaningful work others often avoid. Rory shares his “take the stairs” philosophy, reminding us that real progress comes from consistently choosing long-term results over immediate comfort.

If you’re ready to redefine your habits, design your future with intention, or find the courage to share your story, this episode is your invitation to think long-term, commit to the work, embrace the messy middle, and trust that every setback is preparing you for something greater.

Listener note: This conversation includes mention of suicide. If this topic feels sensitive for you, please take care while listening.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

• The four levels of influence and how understanding them can multiply your impact

• Why the highest performers aren’t chasing shortcuts

• The “pain paradox” and how embracing tough moments now leads to easier, more fulfilled living later
