#73 The Power of Reflecting on the Previous 12 Months and the Science Behind 'Looking in the Rear View Mirror' - Andrew May & Angela Poon13 Dec 202300:50:58

Setting goals is a lot like driving a car. Most of the time is future-focused, looking ahead out the front windscreen. Goal setting research shows it is also important to periodically check the rear view mirror and remind ourselves of progress made and achievements along the way.

As we inch agonisingly closer towards the end of another big year, Andrew and Angela Poon from StriveStronger discuss the 8 areas Andrew asks his coaching clients to review, reflecting on achievements, lessons and learnings from the previous year. Andrew and Angela discuss personal examples, with a few surprises along the way.

Andrew also provides an outline for self-reflective awareness (SRA), which is a ‘meta-cognitive’ ability that involves thinking about and reflecting on your own mental processes. “People with a strong SRA are able to generate a self-narrative that is complex, clear, and multifaceted. They are capable of  communicating in a way that allows others to have a much better understanding of who they are and where they are coming from”.

In this episode Andrew and Ange discuss:

2:30 Why we are doing the rearview mirror activity, Ange’s changes between this year and last year and Ange learning to be herself in presentations.

17:00 The areas of reflection, StriveStronger’s past year and Ange’s work reflections

24:40 Andrew’s work reflection, Ange started listening to the podcast and Andrew’s growth working in mental skills.

33:20 Ange’s community reflection, bringing back the 80’s community feeling and the importance of connection.

39:40 Goal setting for next year, Andrew’s family and relationships reflection and having quality conversations

Carol has written two best-selling books The Force Within and Finding Your Inner Gold, had the original vision for the 24hr Mega Swim which has now raised over $20M for MS Plus, and she lives by the motto “dare to face your fears, believe in yourself, and you can accomplish anything."

#68 The Science of Chronic Cardio (too much), Floppy Dorsal Fin Syndrome (too little), and Minimum Effective Dose (just right) - Dr Paul Batman08 Nov 202301:12:51

Dr Paul Batman is a university academic and is recognised as one of the world’s leading exercise physiologists. This diagnosis tipped my approach to exercise programming upside down.”

Listen to Paul explain chronic cardio syndrome and the loss in elasticity of endothelial lines, why Orcas in captivity suffer a floppy dorsal fin, how MET (metabolic equivalent of tasks) is transforming fitness programming and Andrew (nervously) asks Paul to assess the guidelines he and Dr Tom Buckley have just released for Level 1 Physiology Building Blocks and Level 2 Longevity and Performance.

#121 5th Most Popular Podcast of 2024: The Science and Psychology of Emotional Eating and Understanding the Hidden Causes - Matty Lansdown 25 Dec 202401:33:44

Matty Lansdown is a scientist, nutritionist, and musician, with a background in nutritional epigenetics and disease research. A few years into working at a cancer hospital he began to feel like an imposter, "I was asking questions that no one else seemed to be asking, about the cause of disease and the impact of food on the body… It was so strange to me that quite obviously the majority of patients were overweight or obese and no one talked about their diet or their lifestyle. Ever."

Matty now focuses on the causes of overeating and the emotions we attach to food. And we’re not referring to Bridget Jones crying over her answering machine with an ice-cream tub in hand…we’re talking about real patterns stemming from a range of factors that can include our parents and their patterns, trauma, our relationship with money, how advertisers market to us, what we see online, and more. Through his podcast 'How to Not Get Sick And Die', Matty is on a mission to install new beliefs, new mindsets, and new patterns to live a happy, healthy life.
