Perfect Bound Podcast – Episode 27703 Apr 202500:49:36

Well, Hello!!

It’s been a minute, hasn’t it?

The PBP has returned to share a very special interview. Four-time Eisner Award-Winner Gene Ha recently informed us that his creator owned opus, Mae, will soon see a definitive edition published by Oni Press. He asked if we’d like to sit down and chat about it. We said yes, we’d love to! In addition to chatting about Mae, we talk with Gene about his life as an artist and past collaborators like Alan Moore, Kelly Sue DeConnick, and Gail Simone.

We also give Cole the levity to natter on about his decades – long personal history with Gene, their mutual friends in the industry, and how Gene gave Cole an ounce of immortality.

Mae: The Definitive Edition launches April 8, 2025. Keep up to date with Gene Ha at geneha.com.

With Gene, we discussed:

What prompted Gene to create his own series

How Gene tackled otherworld languages

How Gene uses live models as inspiration for his characters

The portal stories that have inspired Gene

Why Mae is a Young Adult story

How the Mae Definitive Edition fixes the numbering issue

Why Gene teamed up with Zander Cannon

How collaborative is the relationship between artist and writer

What’s next for Gene Ha

Today, the gang talk about hyperbole in the comics industry. More specifically, Dark Horse’s upcoming Bang! from Matt Kindt, Wilfredo Torres, Nayoung Kim and Nate Piekos is touted as “one of the most eagerly anticipated comic debuts of 2020.” But every upcoming title seems to be “highly anticipated” these days, so does this marketing technique work? Who determines what’s anticipated? Has anyone asked about this title specifically in store? Tune in for the giggle-fest that is our punchy third episode.

Perfect Bound Podcast – Episode 24918 Nov 201900:39:07
Episode 24811 Nov 201900:30:22

Today on the show, the gang welcome illustrator and graphic designer Jeff Carpenter. He currently works in-house at Wizards of the Coast, where he contributes to Magic: The Gathering, the Transformers TCG, and Dungeons & Dragons. He previously led a team of designers at The 5th Avenue Theatre and freelanced with non-profit clients across the country. He’s just released his first book, FIELD NOTES: An Ecological Journal of Nature’s Marvels which has our entire panel smitten.

FIELD NOTES: An Ecological Journal of Nature’s Marvels re-imagines comic-book characters in their natural settings in the style of a field guide or nature diary. Including over 100 oil, watercolor, and digital paintings along with pencil sketches, dozens of characters are spread out over 90+ full-color pages. The book is comprehensive and celebrates real aspects of nature while referencing the lore that inspired each entry. So, from the flora and fauna of Gotham City, or the spider species of New York, to the grasslands of Wakanda, this book will be a visual guide for all the creatures you might encounter. Each 9×12 hardcover book features a foil-stamped title on the cover and spine and is individually numbered and signed by the artist. This limited edition of 500 art books was printed and bound in the Pacific Northwest.

Listen in as Jeff tells us about:
• Getting his foot in the door at the 5th
• What he does at Wizards of the Coast
• His experience with Kickstarter
• Having a table at ECCC
• His inspiration for Field Notes
• What he has in store for the future

Jeff will be in store at Comics Dungeon on Wednesday, November 20th from 4-7pm signing copies of his book and selling prints of the artwork. Visit Comics Dungeon’s Facebook page for more information.

And be sure to check out more of Jeff’s work and buy his book at jeffcarpenter.net

Perfect Bound Podcast – Episode 23909 Sep 201900:52:28

We start today’s show talking about the fact that tickets for The Panel Jumper **LIVE** Chapter VIII are now live, so go buy your tickets today so Ben and Cole can sleep at night.

Then we talk about House of X and Powers of X. Specifically:
• Why is Marvel rebooting X-Men?
• How well is it selling?
• Is it a true reboot?
• What is Krakoa’s role?
• Do you need to know everything about the X-Men to enjoy it?
…and much more, More, MORE!

Then we transition to a discussion about a weird speculator boom that’s happening right now. Both Comics Dungeon and Corner Comics (and, we’re sure, other stores in the area) are having to deal with early-morning speculators cleaning out the shelf copies of certain comics. This is an issue because Chris and Nicole can’t know which comics the speculators will target when ordering, and so regular customers who can’t visit their local comic shop at 11am on a Wednesday are out of luck if they want to buy that comic. What are the speculators up to? Is this leading to another 90s-era comic bubble? Are the big publishers just being jerks to retail stores? Is it all Bleeding Cool News’s fault? What’s going on here? If you have a theory, let us know at perfectboundpodcast@gmail.com.

• Why does it?
• Did it at the time, or just in retrospect?
• What are some good things that came out of 90s X-Men?
• What other titles had a “period of suckness.”

Perfect Bound Podcast – Episode 22717 Jun 201900:41:52

This fine evening, the gang gather around the mics inside Comics Dungeon and, based on an article from polygon.com, talk about Superheroes who kill. Is it okay now? Superman and Batman had a code to not kill, but it seems that these days they’re okay with hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent bystander deaths during epic battles. Justified or not, can you call a character a “superhero” if they kill.

Perfect Bound Podcast – Episode 27223 Nov 202001:00:24

Battle of the Linguist Mages
Today on the show, Cole and Ben welcome playwright and novelist Scotto Moore. Scotto is a Seattle-based, multi-media raconteur who, for fourteen years, has been a cornerstone of the Seattle Fringe Theatre community. During his fourteen years as an active playwright, we saw major productions of his work nearly every year, including at least 45 short plays penned for events like 14/48: THE WORLD’S QUICKEST THEATRE FESTIVAL.

Theatre highlights include his a cappella sci-fi musical Silhouette, which premiered at Annex Theatre, winning the 2018 Gregory Falls Award for Outstanding New Play, presented by Theatre Puget Sound.

His break-out sci-fi/horror novella “Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You,” was published by Tor.com in 2019, and today we come together to discuss Scotto’s eagerly anticipated debut Tor.com novel, “Battle of the Linguist Mages,” based on his stage plays Duel of the Linguist Mages and Balconies, which will be released in early 2022.

We’re also joined by Manager Mike Gilson, who has performed in Scotto’s play Balconies, and was a proof-reader for “Battle of the Linguist Mages.”

Today we talk with Scotto about:

• Adapting his own plays into a novel
• How writing for theater influences his novel writing
• Mike’s experience being a proofreader
• Scotto’s influences
• How he pitched his novel to tor.com
• The benefits of proofreaders
• Doing the work as a writer, and learning more about yourself
• Having to do virtual book tours in the age of COVID
• Details on “Battle of the Linguist Mages”
• What’s in store for 2023
