Joining me today is Ed "Roddy" Richardson

. Ed is a graduate of The Royal Academy Of Music, he has already had an incredible career, equally at home as adrummer for TV and Film Sessions, Orchestras, West End Shows and with amazing artists such as Taylor Swift, RAYE, Noel Gallagher, Van Morrisson, John Wilson, Pixie Lott, Mica Paris, Clare Teal, Gregory Porter, Seal and many more. 

Late last year following the late great former Squeeze & Jools Holland drummer Gilson Lavis' retirement from playing, Ed got the nod to join The Jools Holland Orchestra with a glowing endorsment from Gilson himself. Ed tells us all about this prestigious gig from getting the call to touring with the band and of course performing at the event synonymous with New Years Eve, the annual Hootenany! 

To cap off an incredible year Ed signed with Slingerland Drums and performed a quite phenomenal debut clinic at the UK Drum Show in October 25 Huge tanks to Ed for this hugely interesting chat!

Joining me today is Emanuel Harrold, Educator, entrepreneur, producer, master drummer, two-time Grammy Award-winning musician, Harrold continues to raise the bar with collaborations and touring with the likes of Damon Alburn, Gregory Porter, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, De La Soul and Roy Hargrove.

 When you think of four words, Emanuel Harrold name comes to mind: Fashion, community, music and love. Emanuels music legacy stands three generations. If you enjoy artists such as Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Max Roach, Miles Davis, Gospel, Classical, Jazz, Electro and any music that moves you, Harrold likes it too. Born into the artistry of music by way of St. Louis, MO, USA, Harrold is a multiple Grammy-nominated and winning musician. Emanuel's father being a pastor whilst growing up, the appetite for singing and playing instruments grew. There were many musical outlets, those being his grandfather's Memorial Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps, church gatherings and family reunions. Harrold did not seriously pursue his current instrument until after high school. In St. Louis, Emanuel was involved with Off-Broadway musicals with The Black Repertory Theater, traditional jazz and local gospel scenes.

 Harrold is a self-taught musician and inspired by many great people on his musical journey to date. He has performed or recorded in no specific order with: Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Robert Glasper, Ronnie Mathews, Keyon Harrold, Damon Auburn, John Hicks, James Spaulding, Shedrick Mitchell, Marcus Strickland, Stevie Wonder, Kidz in The Hall, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Ben La Uncle Soul, Gregory Porter, Ambrose Akinmusire, Revive The Live Big Band, Jonathan Batiste, Keyon Harrold, Laura Mvula, and too many other great amazing musicians to name in this short bio.

Joining me today is the wonderful British Drummer Chris Whitten 

Since the early 80's Chris has made his mark as one of the finest session and touring drummers in the UK.

Join Chris and myself as we talk about his amazing career from starting out as a youngster playing mainly orchestral percussion (rather than drum kit) including some time playing with the Welsh National Youth Orchestra, through to his time studying at Leeds college of music.

 Chris chats openly about his time with The Waterboys and of course his wonderful playing on the smash hit song "The Whole Of The Moon"

 We talk about how a session with Jerry Marotta sharing some of the drumming duties on an album recording really helped Chris develop the incredible drum sounds he is known for across the globe.

 We had to touch on the iconic Paul McCartney album Flowers in the dirt album that Chris Played on with a whole host of incredible Producers, Musicians and Co Writers, and of course the huge tour that followed the release of the aformentioned album.

 Closely following Chris' time with Paul McCartney, he tells us about his time on the road with Dire Straits after the hugely succesful On Every Street album had been released and getting to recreate the intricate and stunning drum tracks that been recorded by late great Jeff Porcaro.

Originally a New Yorker, John now resides in Italy, John has played on around 200 albums so far in his incredible career as well as touring the world with many incredible artists and bands.

Join John and myself as we chat about some of key moments from his quite remarkable career, including his early days taking lessons from the likes of Rod Morgenstein, Tommy Aldridge, Dom Famularo and the great Joe Franco who reccomended John for Norweigan rockers TNT.

   We also chat about ARK the incredible progressive hard rock band, John was one of the fouding members along with guitarist Tore Østby and how they achieved their first record deal from a visit to a record store!

   John goes into detail about the audition process and life on the road for Swedish guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen and how this included being driven to a bar in Malmsteens Ferarri, drinking for hours and then being asked to perform a drum solo!!

   I couldnt let this conversation go by without mentioning John's incredible drumming  on Michael Romeo's 2 most recent albums - War Of the Worlds PT 1 from 2018 and this years War Of The Worlds PT 2.

Joining me today is Ian Haugland

Since 1984 Ian has been the drummer with Swedish rockers Europe

Join Ian and myself as we chat about his amazing career from his early influence by Cozy Powell after attending a Rainbow gig with Powell on drums in 1976, then onto almost blowing up a gig venue with some home made pyrotechincs at a very early gig with one of his first bands!

 Ian also reminisces about an "interesting" audition with a young Swedish guitar god - Yngwie J Malmsteen!!

 Then of course onto getting the gig with Europe and the recording of Ian's first album with them in 1986 (the bands 3rd) The now iconic - The Final Countdown.

 We talk at length about the Final Countdown and where the instantly catchy keyboard hook originated from and of course THAT fill into the gutar solo!! in my mind that is one of the most iconic drum fills of the 1980's!

Percussion Discussion Episode 82 - John 'JD' Douglas.

Joining me today is a guy with one of the most interesting stories you will ever hear - John 'JD ' Douglas.

 John has one of the most remarkable and succesful careers in music that i have ever heard of!

 He is a phenomenal artist, a highly skilled drummer and one of the most respected and trusted drum tech's in Rock n Roll!

 Currently on tour teching for Bon Jovi's Tico Torres, John kindly found some time to talk about his amazing career so far.....

 John Started out by customizing his own drum kits by painting them, he got spotted in his native Texas while gigging with his band by Frank Beard of ZZ Top who asked John to paint some of his drums, this led to him customizing drums for so many incredible bands including ZZ Top, Van Halen, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith, Pantera, Lynryd Skynyrd, Slash, Bon Jovi and many more!

 This led to teching for many of the bands in that list including ZZ Top whom he had 2 cover 3 gigs for for the injured Frank Beard, Teching for Slash where he had to cover the drum chair for Brent Fitz who stepped in on bass for 2 gigs with no notice for 2 gigs, as if thats not enough he has covered the last 35 shows and will continue to do so for immediate future for Joey Kramer with Aerosmith!!

Percussion Discussion - Episode 79 - Guy Pratt

Something a little different today, the first non drummer ever to appear on Percussion Discussion, but.... he is a monster musician, the wonderful bass player Guy Pratt

 Guy is one of the most respected and revered bass players on the planet, having carved out an incredible career beginning with the Australian band Ice House, Robert Palmer, Womack & Womack, Bryan Ferry, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Saucerful Of Secrets to name but a few!

 I feel very Privileged to have guy along to chat about his experiences playing with some of the finest drummers in existence today!

 Of course we had to start off with Pink Floyd drummer and founder member Nick Mason (Official) whom Guy has been performing with since the mid 80's and continues to do so with the Saucerful of secrets.

 We talk about the wonderful drummer and percussionist and mutual friend of both Guy and myself Ged Lynch, Guy and Ged were both involved with a recent recording project with legendary The Who guitarist Pete Townshend.

 Harry has been playing for British band McFly for over 20 years. As well as his drumming career, Harry has found time to win Strictly in 2011, took part in Celebrity Race Across The World with his mum in 2023, Co-Host Binge Podcast with Alex Jones and is also a very keen runner.

 We had such a great conversation, starting from the very beginnings of his drumming journey, theough to auditioning for McFly. 

2025 is a huge year for the band with several fetival appearances including a slot at Download Festival and a co-headline nationwide tour with fellow brits Busted, we of course talk about both of these things at length.

Joining me today is the wonderful Swiss drummer Roman Roth.

For pretty much the last decade Roman has been playing for Mick Hucknall as a solo artist and for the mangnificent Simply Red

Join Roman and myself as we chat about his career so far, from the beginning of his musical path which started out with the violin, how he switched to drums aged 9 after hearing Art Blakey being played by his music loving father. 

 We talk about his incredible journey from studying drums at universtity in Zurich through to getting the Simply Red gig, and how the gig requires competence in so many diverse styles to get through it!

Roman really is all about the groove and the feel, he has some lovely organic drum sounds both live and on recordings, this is of course made easier by having some top quality equipment, we talk about Paiste Cymbals(also Swiss of course)and Gretsch Drums.

 Dom is a fantastic Drummer, Educator, Author and Motivational speaker.

For as long as i can remember Pete has been scrambling our brains as a monthly contributor for Rhythm Magazine with his incredible Technical Difficulties feature, i am pretty certain he has kept me and many others busy over the years trying to master some of these excercises!

 Aside from this Pete is a very busy and in demand drummer over in the UK having p,ayed for the likes of Republica, Phil Hilborne, Fast Eddie Clarke, KEITH EMERSON, ABC, Tony Hadley & Guthrie Govan to name but a few!

 We have a great chat about his career, including lessons with the late great Bob Armstrong, Rhythm Magazine, Gigging, Playing and life in general!

For many years i have had a fascination with double drums, so i have decided to put together a compilation dedicated to this very subject! I hope you enjoy it.

Legendary American session drummer Rick Shlosser recalls an incredible and very funny story about playing double drums with Ringo on Harry Nillsons - Flash Harry Session.

Thrilled to be once again joined by the wonderful Nic Collins for a brief chat about the huge success of the recent UK and US The Last Domino Tour.

Join Nic and myself as we talk about how if felt to finally play in front of an audience after an intense rehearsal schedule.

 For the drum nerds (as we all are) we chat about some of the original Simmons Drums sounds from the albums that were triggered live in many of the Genesis songs on the tour and how this was achieved.

 We also talked how was it to get back gigging in clubs with his own band Better Strangers after playing to 20,000 people a night inbetween the UK & US legs of the tour.

Joining me today is an incedible Drummer who has pushed the boundaries of his instrument to a whole different level, Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer, Educator and Producer Thomas Lang

 Thomas has had a remarkable career as a drummer since picking up his first pair of drum sticks in his native Vienna, Austria. 

 his first big break was playing with his fellow countryman Falco on the mega hit Rock Me Amadeus! since then he has palyed with some of the biggest names in music including Peter Gabriel, Glenn Hughes, Steve Hackett, PAUL GILBERT and many more!

 Join Thomas and myself as we talk about his recent incredible performance alongside the fabulous percussiont Pete Lockett at thePercussive Arts Society Covention. Thomas talks about the preperation that went into this well in advance of the performance and how he and Pete didnt actually manage to play together on instruments! Just on pillows in a hotel room for a short while before the performance!

 Thomas also shows us around his incredible facility, where he can give high quality remote lessons, record, compose, hold drumming bootcamps and pretty much anything else drum related!

Joining me today is the fabulous british drummer Ian Mosley, Ian has been playing for legendary british band Marillion since 1984!

 Join Ian and myself as we talk about his incredible career, from having a great teacher at school, through to working at the legendary drum shop - Drum City, where Ian would ask famous visiting drummers to show him something that he could play, and how he was once required to go to Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club to repair Buddy Rich's drum kit!!

 We also talk how he got a job playing in the West End as a teenager playing in Hair with very little rehearsal, we also talk about his time playing for former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and of course how he got the Marillion gig.

 We had to talk about Ian's recent move to British Drum Co and the wonderful drum kit they have provided for him that will be used on the forthcoming tour, speaking of the tour, we talk about the Marillion fans, arguably the best most loyal fans in the world!

It was a huge pleasure chatting to Ian, I have been a fan of his magnificent drumming for a long time - Thank you for giving your time so generously.

 Clem chats openly about his time with Meek and his legendary fiery temper, plus how James Corden came round to Clem's house for a few tips and pointers before playing Clem in the Joe Meek Film!!

We chat about Charlie"s love of British heavy metal - Particularly Motörhead and how Lemmy showed up at the first UK Anthrax gig!

We are firmly back in the legends lounge today with legendary British drummer, author and drum historian Bob Henrit.

Bob has played and recorded for such an incredible list of bands and musicians over the last 4 or 5 decades including Argent, The Kinks, Adam Faith, The Zombies, Jim Rodford, The Roulettes, Unit 4+2 and many more.

Join Bob and myself as we chat about his fabulous career including a section on his drum shop Henrits Drum Store and how it was trying to juggle life as a touring/recording musician and trying to run a drum shop.

 There are some wonderful stories about Bob's good friend, the late great Keith Moon.

Darby Todd is without doubt one of the most talented drummers in the UK Today, he has a remarkable talent for playing drums and applying it to any style!

Join Darby and myself as we chat about his amazing career so far from his early days taking lessons with legendary uk drum teacher/educator Colin Woolway and the world renowned Thomas Lang.

Darby has played for some incredible bands and musicians including Justin Hawkins, The Darkness, his regular gig with Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre, Alan Price, Gary Moore and many more.

we also chat about his recent solo album that features contributions from some of the finest musicians on the planet including Don Airey, Kee Marcello, Adam Wakeman, Laurence Cottle, Marco Minnemann and Andy Newmark to name but a few!

We had to talk about Darby's recent gig with Canadian mega star singer/guitarist Devin Townsend, headling the Bloodstock Festival with very little rehearsal time! Since the interview Darby has gone on to recorded the drum parts for Devin's new album, so i think we can safely assume that he was impressed with Darby's incredible talent!

 Sleepy Harrogate isnt known as a breeding ground for loud and raucous rock n roll, however Asomvel have certainly made a mark on their hometown. Join Ryan and myself as we talk about the band, including the recent huge support tour with Aussie hard rockers Airbourne and how their set was almost as big as the headline acts set, again with the whole wall of Marshall stacks turned on and up!
