In the latest episode, Pakistan men’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson is interviewed by former Test cricketer and commentator Bazid Khan. Hesson shares insights into his coaching philosophy, discusses what led him to take up the role with Pakistan, explains how his stint with Islamabad United in the HBL PSL helped him get to know the Pakistan players and outlines his vision for the team’s future.

In Hesson’s first assignment as head-coach of the team, Pakistan whitewashed Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series held in Lahore from 28 May to 1 June. This special edition of the podcast was recorded following Pakistan’s victory in the first T20I against Bangladesh.

In the 62nd episode of PCB Podcast, Pakistan men’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson is interviewed by former Test cricketer and commentator Bazid Khan, which is available here. Hesson shares insights into his coaching philosophy, discusses what led him to take up the role with Pakistan, explains how his stint with Islamabad United in the HBL PSL helped him get to know the Pakistan players and outlines his vision for the team’s future.

The following is some of the extract from the conversation between Bazid Khan and Mike Hesson:

Bazid Khan: How difficult is it to not having played top level cricket and then be able to coach at the elite level?

Mike Hesson: Look, I think players decide if you are valuable or not. They are the ones that decide, can this person help me achieve what I want to achieve. And they ultimately decide if you add value. So, for me, I think a lot of really fine players can share a lot of experiences.

Some are very good coaches. Some probably struggle to understand those that are struggling, because they were so good. For me, coaching is very different than playing. It's about trying to maximise talent. It's not necessarily about telling them about the greater things that I have played during my time.

I have had that for many years and when I coached New Zealand, I hadn't, you know, without international experience and like I said, players decide. They work out very quickly if you can add value or not. You know, I have been lucky enough to coach some of the best players in the world and build those relationships with them.

And I think in many ways, you know, they can share things with you more than, you know, if you're potentially a competitor. And, you know, this job is a coaching job. It's not a playing role.

Bazid Khan: As a head coach, you've obviously got a lot of experience, you have coached almost all the world around. Could you sort of, in your own words and sort of summarise or is it possible to summarise your coaching philosophy as a Head Coach?

Mike Hesson: Look, I guess I go back to trying to maximize talent and I think that that's the role of any head coach and I guess that I do that by building relationships. So once, I believe you can only coach a player once you actually understand the path they've been through.

I see my philosophy is trying to understand that and add value around that rather than trying to dictate necessarily the way they have to play. 

Bazid Khan: So, it's a more holistic approach where you look at 360, look at every other aspect, not just how he's playing. 

Mike Hesson: Yeah, absolutely. I think once you've got that relationship, you know, you understand what makes them tick, where they're trying to get to, the path they've already traveled. Only then I think you can add value. And yeah, it is a holistic approach. It's probably more an individual approach than necessarily, you know, we all have to do it my way.

Lahore, 27 May 2025: The Pakistan Cricket Board today released the 60th Podcast, which features all-rounders Faheem Ashraf and Hussain Talat. The episode is available here for viewing and free download.

Both the all-rounders are part of the Pakistan 16-member squad which will take on Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series starting from 28 May.

31-year-old Faheem has represented Pakistan in 102 international matches, while Talat has featured in 19 international matches for Pakistan.

Lahore, 25 April 2025: With Pakistan women’s team successfully qualifying for the ICC Women’s World Cup after winning their all five matches in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025 held in Lahore earlier this month, the Pakistan Cricket Board has released a special edition of the PCB Podcast, hosted by Aliya Riaz (Pakistan Women’s ODI Cap #71).

As the Pakistan men’s cricket team prepares to launch its 2024-25 red-ball international season under the

new Shan Masood-Jason Gillespie partnership, respected cricket commentator Bazid Khan speaks with the

Pakistan captain and read-ball head coach for the 54th edition of the PCB Podcast and chats to them about

their expectations, preparations and challenges for the season in which Pakistan will play nine Tests.

Pakistan will enter in the second half the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle by hosting

Bangladesh for two Tests on 21-25 August (Rawalpindi) and 30 August-3 September (Karachi). They will

then play three Tests against England at home on 7-11 October (Multan), 15-19 October (Karachi) and 24-

28 October (Rawalpindi). Pakistan will travel to South Africa where the two Tests will be played on 26-30

December (Centurion) and 3-7 January (Cape Town), before they will wrap up against the West Indies with

a two-Test home series on 16-20 January and 24-28 January.

On the ICC World Test Championship standings, Pakistan is currently sitting in fifth position but has played

only two out of the six series. Strong performances in the upcoming four series will put them in contention

for a place in the June final as both positions for the Lord’s match are still up for grabs. Bangladesh is

presently eighth, England sixth, South Africa seventh and the West Indies ninth in the third edition of the

Championship.

PCB celebrates 15 years of T20 World Cup 2009 victory in 53rd edition of PCB Podcast

In the 53rd edition of the PCB Podcast, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) celebrates 15 years of the Pakistan men’s cricket team’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009, which coincides with this month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The PCB Digital team has spoken with some of the star performers from that successful campaign in which Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lord’s on 21 June 2009.

Younis Khan-inspired Pakistan peaked at the right time to win four straight matches to win the title. They defeated New Zealand by six wickets, Ireland by 39 runs, South Africa by seven runs and Sri Lanka by eight wickets. Their other win was against the Netherlands by 82 runs, while the two loses were against England (48 runs) and Sri Lanka (19 runs).

Pakistan’s victory came after it had narrowly lost the 2007 T20 World Cup final by five runs. The 2009 victory was Pakistan’s first ICC title in 15 years.

Some of the leading performers, who spoke with the PCB Digital team and not only reflected on the successful campaign but also extended warm wishes to the current side, included:

• Abdul Razzaq – took three for 20 in the final against Sri Lanka; he had joined the side as a replacement for an injured Yasir Arafat

• Misbah Ul Haq – Would have been the fifth batter in had Pakistan lost the third wicket in the final, averaged 27.33 with a strike-rate of 117.14 and top-score of 20-ball 31 not out versus the Netherlands

• Mohammad Amir – at 17 years and 58 days, he was the youngest player in the tournament; took six wickets in the series; bowled a memorable wicket-maiden first over in the final

• Saeed Ajmal – Was joint-second leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets in the tournament

• Shahid Afridi – took 11 wickets and scored 176 runs at a strike-rate of 141 in seven matches; was the player of the semi-final and the final, making him the only player to date to win player of the match awards in the semi-final and final in a same edition

• Shoaib Malik – Featured in two critical partnerships with Shahid Afridi in the semi-final and final, putting on 67 runs off 58 balls for the third wicket against South Africa and an unbroken 76 runs for the third wicket from 58 balls in the final. In seven matches, Shoaib averaged 28.8 with the bat with a strike-rate of 102.85

“I am happy and excited because when you go to play in a major event, you have different excitement. It’s the aim of any cricketer to play in a World Cup, so that kind of feeling is coming over me. The hope is always to lift the trophy, but for that to happen, we have to play top cricket against every side.

“Our performances in the last two ICC Men’s T20 World Cups have been good. Unfortunately, we could not finish on a high. We were also runners-up in the ACC T20 Asia Cup 2022. So, at the back of our minds, we are thinking about how we have played two finals and a semi-final and how we can overcome the mistakes that derailed our campaigns.

“Effort is in our hands, but results, we do not know. How we present ourselves on the ground, our body language and how we communicate with each other will matter. We must be positive, so results will come.”

“As a batter, I have achieved decently and, as a captain, I have won a few series. But lifting the ICC trophy is a different motivation. You go to a different level and get a lot of praise. So, the motivation, aspiration and dream remains to lift an ICC trophy and present it to Pakistan.

“Conditions in the USA may pose challenges as we are going there as a national side for the first time. We are in the process of collating various cricket and match-related information from players who have played there, which can help and assist us in our preparations.”

“An India-Pakistan match is always the most talked about; it is discussed too much wherever you go in the world. The players get different vibes and excitement. What will happen is that everyone supports their country, so the focus is on that match.

“The whole world is focused on the day when the India-Pakistan match is held. Naturally, there will be nerves, but we need to keep our focus, stick to the basics and play easy cricket. It is always a pressure game; the more you keep cool and calm, believe in your skills and hard work, then things get easier.

“I understand the responsibilities of a captain as there are additional expectations. You have players and the management, and you have to maintain communication with them. You have to control your emotions and back your players because you have to get the best performance out of them. You always have to support them and give them the confidence that they are the best and can do better.”

“I think the semi-final we lost against Australia (2021), we could have won that. In that match, fielding was the reason that made a different impact. If we had bowled two or three dot balls in the final stages, then the pressure would have got to them. But we lost as a team and not due to an individual.

“For me, in 2022, we could and should have won the India game, but they took it away.

Aleem Dar, who won the David Shepherd Trophy for umpire of the year from 2009-2011, hosts the 51st edition of the PCB Podcast.

In the latest episode, the 55-year-old, who has umpired in 453 international matches since 2000, speaks with elite panelist Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, and Rashid Riaz (both from the international panel) as the trio prepares to officiate in next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean.

It is the first time that three Pakistani umpires have been selected to officiate in a T20 World Cup.

Aleem Dar speaks with the three umpires about their pre-umpiring days, journeys to the top, match preparations, excitement at being selected for the biggest cricket event of the year, career aspirations, how technology has assisted the umpires, what it means to be a cricket umpire, and life outside cricket.

• Ahsan Raza – Celebrates his 50th birthday next week, was promoted to the ICC elite panel in 2023, has umpired in 13 Tests, 53 ODIs, 76 T20Is, 12 Women’s ODIs and 16 Women’s T20Is since making his international debut in 2015. He played 21 first-class matches for Faisalabad, Habib Bank Limited, Lahore and Sargodha.

• Asif Yaqoob – The 50-year-old has umpired in 17 ODIs, 19 T20Is, 21 Women’s ODIs and 12 Women’s T20Is since 2015. He has been part of the international panel since 2018, has previously umpired in the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cups, and won the PCB Umpire of the Year for 2020 and 2021.

• Rashid Riaz – The 48-year-old has umpired in 15 ODIs, 32 T20Is, 15 Women’s ODIs, and 11 Women’s T20Is since 2015. He has umpired in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers and ICC Men’s U19 World Cups. He played 50 first-class matches for Lahore and the National Bank of Pakistan from 2000-2011 and has been part of the international panel since 2018

With the HBL PSL 8 now just six days away, the Pakistan Cricket Board today released the 44th edition of the PCB Podcast, which features Imad Wasim, Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan. The PCB Podcast released last week included Babar Azam, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Both the podcasts are available here for free viewing, downloading and editorial use.

Imad Wasim, who has played 58 T20Is for Pakistan, will captain 2020 champions Karachi Kings, Mohammad Rizwan will hope to inspire Multan Sultans to their third successive final, while Shadab Khan will attempt to make Islamabad United the most successful HBL PSL franchise by winning the title for the third time.

Rizwan will feature in the opening match of the HBL PSL 8 when his side will take on defending champions Lahore Qalandars in Multan on 13 February, Imad will be in action on 14 February when he will go head to head with Babar Azam-captained Peshawar Zalmi in Karachi, while Shadab will walk out for the toss for the first time in 2023 with Imad in Karachi on 16 February.

The three champion cricketers spoke candidly with PCB Digital on wide-ranging cricket-related matters and also previewed the tournament, which will culminate in Lahore on 19 March.

Imad Wasim: “HBL PSL is one of the best leagues in the world, which is very close to our hearts. We wait for this league for 10 months during which we prepare, plan and set goals. Then, we enter into this great event to achieve our collective objectives, help our sides win and this cycle continues.

“Last year, Karachi Kings were hampered with injuries, but for 2023, we have all bases covered with high-quality players who all are match-winners. The most important thing for us is to play T20 the way it should be played, which is with a positive attitude and aggressive intent.

“We will go step-by-step and match-by-match in this tournament with our first target being to secure a place in the play-offs. One of the best things about this HBL PSL is we will have home matches. So, we are aiming to make the best use of our first five matches at home and build the momentum that can carry us into the play-offs.

“This year, every side is equally balanced and it is difficult to predict an outright winner. All sides boast some outstanding talent and they will enter the event with different combinations and strengths. This clearly reflects how the HBL PSL has evolved and why it has now become an extremely challenging and exciting league.”

Mohammad Rizwan: “I missed few matches in the early part of the HBL PSL, but I will not blame anyone. It is all part of the game as each side has its own strategy and game plan, but I am now giving importance to each match I play so that I can make up for the lost time. Captaincy and batting can be challenging, but we have a good group of people who have not only empowered me but also back and support me so that I can strike the right balance and continue to give my best.

A 2017 Champions Trophy winner, Shadab has played 84 T20Is in which he has scored 476 runs and taken 98 wickets. He has also featured in six Tests and 53 ODIs.

Moin, a World Cup-winner, represented Pakistan in 69 Tests and 219 ODIs, while Azam has returned to the side for the Sharjah matches after previously playing three T20Is in 2021 (two versus England, one against the West Indies).
