From Lawyer to Leader

mercredi 21 janvier 2026Duration 18:34

“I just want to be the best lawyer I can be.”

I hear this from women lawyers all the time. And while it matters, it’s not enough if you want to make partner.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, we explore one of the most challenging — and least clearly explained — transitions in a law firm: moving from excellent lawyer to visible, credible leader.

The skills that make you a great lawyer are not the same ones that help you step into leadership. Many women are diligent, reliable and meticulous — but hesitate to take risks, put themselves forward, or be seen. Add poor management, constant interruption and criticism, and it’s no surprise that so many women stay stuck in “excellent execution” rather than leadership.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The difference between being a manager and being a leader
  • Why leadership often feels riskier for women — and which risks actually matter
  • How to move from passive to proactive in your career
  • What “being proactive” really looks like in meetings, client relationships and skill-building
  • Why perfection can hold you back — and what to replace it with
  • How adopting a leader mindset changes how you’re seen and how you feel

This episode is for you if you’re technically strong, well-regarded — and quietly wondering what more you need to do to be seen as partnership material.

Who Can Help You on Your Partnership Journey as a Woman Lawyer?

Season 1 · Episode 2

mercredi 21 janvier 2026Duration 15:37

Law can be a tough — and surprisingly lonely — profession.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, we talk about a reality that rarely gets named in law firms: many women lawyers feel isolated, even when they’re surrounded by people.

I begin with a story from a client who cried every day on her way to work as a young lawyer — then wiped her tears and walked into the office with a fake smile on her face. Her story is sadly not unusual.

The truth is you cannot build a successful legal career alone.

In this episode, I share the three types of relationships every woman lawyer needs to support her pathway to partnership:

  • Emotional support to stay grounded, resilient and well
  • Career support for technical, strategic and leadership growth (including mentors, sponsors and coaches)
  • Referral relationships with other lawyers, often your greatest source of work

You’ll also be guided through a short, practical exercise to map your current support network, identify the gaps, and choose one small step you can take this week.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, isolated or close to burnout, this episode is a reminder that getting the right support isn’t a luxury, it’s essential.

How to Make Partner: The "Why" Every Woman Lawyer Needs

Season 1 · Episode 1

mardi 13 janvier 2026Duration 11:16

Is partnership actually right for you? It is often presented as the ultimate goal in a legal career, but rarely do we discuss what it involves beyond the title and status.

In this opening episode of Pathway to Partnership, we start where every journey should begin: with your “why.” Host Cecilia Poullain—former finance lawyer turned executive coach—unpacks the realities of the partner track and explores why so many women pursue it by default, often leading to burnout or feeling trapped.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

📌 Why you must clarify your "why" before committing to the partner track ⚖️ What partnership really involves (beyond just excellent legal work)

❓ The 3 questions to ask yourself to see if partnership aligns with your life goals

This episode is an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters to you—so you can step onto your path with clarity, confidence, and intention.

The Perfectionism Trap for Women Lawyers

Season 1 · Episode 4

mardi 27 janvier 2026Duration 15:00

Perfectionism can feel safe — even responsible — but for many women lawyers, it quietly becomes a career-limiting habit.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain explores how perfectionism shows up every day in law firms: not speaking up in meetings, staying silent on client calls, avoiding visibility, or holding back from leadership opportunities because you’re not 100% sure — and terrified of making a mistake.

Through a real coaching story, Cecilia unpacks what’s really behind this hesitation: fear of shame, not incompetence. She explains why the consequences of “getting it wrong” are often far smaller than we imagine — and how staying silent can be far riskier in the long run.

You’ll learn:

  • Why perfectionism keeps women lawyers stuck — even as they approach partnership
  • The crucial difference between perfectionism and excellence
  • Practical tools to help you speak up with more confidence, including the little gap, the risk coin, and taking calibrated risks
  • How to build confidence in a way that works for you — especially if “fake it till you make it” doesn’t
  • How small, intentional steps can help you move from excellent lawyer to visible leader

This episode is an invitation to notice the moments when perfectionism is making decisions for you — and to start choosing excellence instead.

If you’re a woman lawyer aiming for partnership and finding yourself holding back, this conversation is for you.

Sales Conversations Without Fear for Women Lawyers

dimanche 15 février 2026Duration 27:41

Sales conversations can feel intimidating — especially when you feel judged, unsure of your credibility, or uncomfortable “selling” yourself.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain breaks down why sales feels so difficult for many women lawyers — and how to approach it in a way that feels natural, credible and confident.

Using a powerful coaching story and real-life examples, Cecilia explains the emotional traps around sales, the double bind women often face, and why confidence can collapse when objections arise. She then shares a simple four-step structure for sales conversations that works whether you’re pitching formally, meeting for coffee or speaking to a referred client.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Reframe sales as a professional conversation, not self-promotion
  • Balance deep listening with showing up as an expert
  • Establish credibility without being aggressive
  • Handle objections — including price — with confidence
  • Stay in control of next steps instead of leaving conversations open-ended

This episode gives you a practical framework to approach sales conversations calmly and effectively — so bringing in clients feels aligned, professional and sustainable.

Sustainable Business Development for Women Lawyers

Season 1 · Episode 8

dimanche 8 février 2026Duration 23:57

Business development doesn’t have to feel exhausting, awkward or based on luck.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain breaks down how women lawyers can build a clear, reliable system for attracting work — without trying to do everything.

Starting with a simple story about two lawyers who took very different approaches to relationship-building, Cecilia explains why much of your work is likely already coming from closer than you think — often from inside your own firm — and how focusing on the right relationships makes marketing far easier and more effective.

You’ll learn:

  • Why many women lawyers dislike marketing — and the biggest mistake they make
  • How to identify where your work actually comes from and focus your energy there
  • Why relationship-building inside and outside your firm matters more than visibility alone
  • How to use the “know, like, trust” funnel to create a sustainable marketing system

This episode is about replacing scattered effort with focus — so business development becomes simpler, more natural and far more effective over time.

Positioning for Women Lawyers

Season 1 · Episode 7

mercredi 4 février 2026Duration 13:08

If your practice is too broad, everything feels harder — from marketing and visibility to attracting the right clients.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain explores why many women lawyers struggle with positioning — and how trying to “do everything” often leads to vague branding, boring LinkedIn posts and missed opportunities.

Cecilia explains:

  • What happens when your positioning is too broad — and why clients and referrers don’t come
  • How clearer positioning makes marketing, confidence and client development easier
  • The risks of being too narrow — and how to avoid boxing yourself in
  • Different ways to position yourself, including audience-based, problem-based and phased approaches

This episode is about finding the balance between focus and flexibility — so you can build a strong reputation, attract the right work and grow your career in a way that feels sustainable and authentic.

How Women Lawyers can be Heard in Meetings

Season 1 · Episode 6

lundi 2 février 2026Duration 13:10

Why are so many highly competent women lawyers not being heard in meetings?

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain explores a pattern she sees again and again in law firms: women rate their competence highly, but their confidence far lower — with real consequences for visibility, promotion and partnership.

Drawing on research, real stories from law firms and her own coaching work, Cecilia unpacks why women are so often interrupted, talked over or have their ideas ignored — and how this leads firms to promote the most confident voices rather than the most competent ones.

You’ll learn:

  • Why meetings are a critical place where partnership potential is judged
  • How interruption and idea-stealing impact women’s confidence and careers
  • Practical tools to handle being talked over, including meta-communication, amplification and ally support
  • How to approach meetings as a place to practise being heard — rather than shutting yourself down

This episode is essential listening for any woman lawyer who wants her ideas recognised, her voice respected, and her talent fully seen.

Setting Boundaries: a Delicate Balance for Women Lawyers

Season 1 · Episode 5

jeudi 29 janvier 2026Duration 12:57

Setting boundaries in a law firm is rarely straightforward.

In this episode of The Pathway to Partnership Podcast, Cecilia Poullain explores why many women lawyers struggle with boundaries — not because they don’t care, but because they underestimate their power.

Cecilia looks at what happens when boundaries are non-existent (burnout, resentment) and when they’re too rigid (loss of trust and damaged reputation). Through real examples from law firms, she shows why the key is finding the middle ground.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise emotional signals that a boundary is being crossed
  • Balance your needs with those of clients, partners, family and your team
  • Communicate boundaries clearly and professionally
  • Understand that it is possible to speak up — often more than you think

This episode is about moving away from extremes and building boundaries based on balance, communication and trust — so you can create a career that is both successful and sustainable.
