The genome whispered: sell the key,

A Tuesday sky turned steel and flame.

The towers fell. They fed the blame.

New towers rose, of law and screen,

and safety sold what truth had been.

They trained the child to pass the test,

to sit up straight, obey, suppress.

“No Child Left” the slogan lied.

They marched them forward, uniformed pride.

They inked new laws the eye can’t see,

with logs and scans and policy.

They labeled facts as threats instead,

then pathologized what people said.

They called it free, then locked the gate.

They called it fate, but measured hate.

They called it home, connection, kin,

then built the cage and locked us in.

No siren blew, no final sound,

just flat-lit screens and click-click rounds.

The doors all closed with gentle glide,

Here is a collection of facts about Manuka honey that go beyond simple chemistry. These focus on its botanical origins, its traditional use in New Zealand's indigenous medicine (Rongoā Māori), and its unique characteristics as a "plant-based" remedy.

1. Manuka Honey is a "Monofloral" Specialist

Most honey is "polyfloral" (bees visit many different types of flowers). True medicinal Manuka is monofloral, meaning the bees must collect at least 70% of their nectar from the Leptospermum scoparium shrub. If they wander too far to a clover field, the medicinal potency (MGO) drops significantly.

2. The "Nectar to Medicine" Transformation

The antibacterial magic of Manuka doesn't actually exist in the flower's nectar. The nectar contains a compound called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It is only after the bees add their own enzymes and store the honey in the hive that the DHA slowly converts into the super-powered Methylglyoxal (MGO). It’s a literal biological alchemy.

3. The Māori "Taonga" (Treasure)

Indigenous Māori people have used the Manuka plant as a "pharmacy in a bush" for centuries, long before the honey was commercially branded.

• The Bark: Boiled into a tea to act as a sedative or used as a topical rub for sore muscles.
• The Leaves: Steeped to reduce fevers or inhaled as steam for colds.
• The Resin (Gum): Applied to burns or chewed to treat coughs.

4. It Thrives in "Stressed" Soil

The Manuka shrub is incredibly hardy and often grows in poor, acidic soil where other plants die. In herbalism, plants that survive harsh conditions are often believed to possess more "resilience" or "vitality," which is then passed on to the consumer through its honey or oils.

5. A Natural Humectant

In herbal skincare, Manuka is prized because it is a humectant. This means it doesn't just moisturize; it actually pulls moisture from the air and traps it in the skin. This makes it an "active" ingredient in herbal salves rather than just a base.

6. It has a "Thixotropic" Nature

This is a fancy herbal/scientific term meaning the honey is naturally a gel when at rest, but becomes liquid when stirred or shaken. This "jelly-like" consistency is a signature of high-quality Manuka and is one way traditional harvesters could tell it apart from standard honey.

7. The "Anti-Biofilm" Warrior

One of the most impressive herbal facts is Manuka's ability to break down biofilms. Bacteria often build a "slime shield" (biofilm) to protect themselves from antibiotics. Manuka honey is one of the few natural substances that can penetrate this shield to kill the bacteria hiding underneath.

8. Short Flowering Window

The Manuka bush only blooms for 2 to 6 weeks a year. This creates an intense "harvest window." This scarcity is part of why it is treated with such reverence in both the herbal market and in ritual magic—it is a fleeting gift from the earth.

"Doom Bloom" is the punchy, apocalyptic name given to a unique type of honey produced from the secretions of the spotted lanternfly, an invasive pest from Asia that has heavily impacted the Northeast U.S.1

While typical honey comes from flower nectar, Doom Bloom is technically a "honeydew honey." It was famously branded and marketed by the Philadelphia Bee Co. as a way to find a silver lining to the lanternfly invasion.2

How It's Made

1. The Bug: Spotted lanternflies feed on plant sap (especially from the invasive Tree of Heaven).3
2. The Secretion: Because they consume more sugar than they can digest, they excrete a sticky, sugary liquid called "honeydew" (essentially bug waste).4
3. The Bee: In late summer and fall, when flowers are scarce, honeybees collect this honeydew and process it into honey just like they would with nectar.5

What It Tastes Like

It is famously "polarizing." People rarely think it's just "okay"—they usually love it or hate it.

• Flavor Profile: It is very dark, thick, and less sweet than floral honey.6 Most tasters describe it as smoky, earthy, and savory, with notes of molasses, bacon, or "wet leaves."7
• Aroma: It has a distinct, pungent smoky odor.8
• Texture: It tends to be stickier and "stringier" than traditional clover honey and crystallizes quickly.9

Why It’s Not All Bad

• High Antimicrobial Power: Recent research from Penn State suggests this honey may have higher antibacterial properties than Manuka honey, potentially making it effective against bacteria like MRSA and E. coli.10
• Great for Bees: Interestingly, honeybees seem to overwinter very well on this "doom" honey, providing them a food source when nothing else is blooming.11
• Culinary Use: Chefs and foodies have embraced it as a "party trick" ingredient, pairing it with strong blue cheeses or using it as a glaze for roasted meats where the smokiness can shine.12

7 Herbs That Lower Blood Sugar

1. Cinnamon - probably the most popular one. Some studies suggest it may improve insulin sensitivity and help lower fasting blood glucose.
2. Fenugreek - the seeds contain soluble fiber that can slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption. It's been used traditionally for blood sugar management.
3. Gymnema sylvestre - sometimes called the "sugar destroyer" in Hindi. It may help reduce sugar absorption in the intestines and improve insulin function.
4. Berberine - found in several plants like goldenseal and barberry. Research suggests it can be quite effective for blood sugar control, working similarly to some diabetes medications.
5. Bitter melon - used in traditional medicine across Asia. It contains compounds that may help glucose uptake by cells.
6. Ginger and 7. turmeric have also shown some promise in studies for helping with blood sugar regulation.

Hops (Humulus lupulus)

Upon the trellis, reaching for the light,

A verdant climber, pleasing to the sight.

The Humulus lupulus, the hops so fine,

Whose fragrant cones hold medicine divine.

Though known for brewing, lending beer its zest,

Its gentle powers put the mind at rest.

When anxious thoughts like buzzing insects stray,

And chase the calm of peaceful sleep away,

A bitter herb, a sedative so mild,

To soothe the worries of the weary child.

For restlessness that keeps the body tense,

It offers solace, a sweet recompense.

A cup of tea, with cones infused and steeped,

Where silent slumber can at last be reaped.

The phytoestrogens, a helpful boon,

For women facing nature’s change too soon.

With menopausal heat and night sweats dire,

It helps to quell that internal fire.

It works in balance, subtle and profound,

Where gentle comfort can at last be found.

Beyond the nerves, its gifts are many more,

  Based on information published on the website for the Bureau of Indian Affairs you are the ICWA Director at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Please let me know if this is not accurate.  I want to inform you that the law is NOT being followed in Amanda Mulanax's DHS case. Amanda has had no contact with her children since October 2022. Oklahoma DHS removed Amanda's four children in October 2022 and there was NO JUST CAUSE for removal.   The Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 was recently upheld by the Supreme Court in June 2023. The Indian Child Welfare Act mentions that state agencies like Oklahoma DHS must make "active efforts" to keep Native American children with their families. And if removal becomes necessary, the agency must make "active efforts" to reunite Native American children with their families. Oklahoma DHS is NOT following the law in this way.   Please review Amanda Mulanax's cases for ALL FOUR of her minor children:   Amanda Mulanax wants her attorney to file a motion to invalidate the custody proceedings based on noncompliance with ICWA. I am concerned that Amanda's appointed attorney is intentionally withholding documents when requested and failing to file motions that would help reunify Amanda's family.   Amanda is having trouble obtaining documentation regarding the removal of her children even though she requested the documents from a supervisor at DHS whose name is James Andrew Jarvis. Based on said supervisor's LinkedIn profile, the supervisor is on a "newly formed unit" at DHS "with the goal of adoption as the focus." The supervisor's goal to permanently dismantle families violates Federal Law when applied to Amanda Mulanax's case.   Amanda Mulanax is a Native American woman and a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma therefore, Amanda's children are protected by the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 and ACTIVE EFFORTS must be made to reunite ALL of her children with her. No active efforts have been made to reunite this Indian family. In fact, efforts are being made by JAMES ANDREW JARVIS (supervisor at DHS) to terminate Amanda Mulanax's parental rights without just cause.   Thank you for taking the time to consider this matter. Please forward this message to any and all people who can assist in rectifying this egregious violation of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978.

Tropane Alkaloids Atropine (dl-hyoscyamine) Hyoscyamine Scopolamine (d-hyoscine) Solanine Alkaloids are naturally occurring compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom. The name alkaloid comes from the basic (high pH) nature of many members of the group, alkaline-like. Tropane alkaloids all have a tropane ring system but despite this structural similarity, the pharmacological effects of these compounds differ significantly. In addition to the alkaloids mentioned in this episode, cocaine is also an alkaloid that is widely used. Cocaine, Hyoscyamine, and Scopolamine are able to pass the blood-brain barrier and cause hallucinations and other psychoactive effects. Cocaine is extracted from Coca plants that are grown in South America. Hyoscyamine and Scopolamine are extracted from a few different Solanaceae plants including Duboisia plants that are grown on large plantations in Australia and Datura plants that are grown around the world.
