Injectable Fillers & Gender Affirmation21 Jul 202600:28:12

Facial appearance carries some of the strongest signals of gender, and small, precise changes can shift how a face reads to the world.

Dr. Lawrence Bass and returning guest Dr. Jason Bloom, co-director of the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, walk through the standard menu of facial feminization and masculinization work: brow shape, nasal bridge and tip, forehead slope, cheek volume, and jaw and chin contour. They compare implants, fat grafting, and fillers for each area, and explain why male-to-female changes tend to be reductive while female-to-male changes tend to be additive.

Dr. Bloom shares how neuromodulators and fillers let people preview a look and adjust brow height or cheek volume with real precision, without surgery or anesthesia. Insurance coverage, cost, and the reality that this work is ongoing rather than one-and-done round out the conversation.

The takeaway: there is no single template for a masculine or feminine face, and the right surgeon listens to what a person wants rather than repeating one signature style.

About Dr. Jason Bloom

Dr. Jason Bloom is a facial plastic surgeon in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and co-director of the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his fellowship at New York University and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

Aesthetic Titans #3: Inside the Plastic Surgery Beat with Joan Kron07 Jul 202601:00:36

When Allure greenlit a 1991 story on whether cosmetic surgeons talk people into procedures they don't need, the reporter who took it signed up for a facelift mid-assignment — and built a 25-year career off the result.

Joan Kron joins Dr. Bass for a long conversation about what plastic surgery looked like before liposuction, before Botox, before fillers were anything more than collagen. Her early Allure features ranged from "Shopping for a New Face" to a story about a woman who died on the operating table during a facelift, and her monthly Scalpel News column ran for 25 years without ever publishing a "best doctor" list.

Joan and Dr. Bass talk through three decades of shifts: selfie culture pulling the average age down, the rise of Botox, the injectables boom now distorting faces a syringe at a time, the Brazilian butt lift trade where industrial silicone in the wrong hands has become a leading cause of cosmetic death, and a frank read on reality TV — Botched, she argues, isn't really about plastic surgery so much as letting viewers feel superior to people who made bad choices.

The most practical thread is recovery. Major procedures need professional post-operative monitoring, not a girlfriend who can't tell when bleeding has become a hematoma or local anesthesia has dropped blood pressure into the danger zone. Beauty is more accessible than ever, but the moment someone shops for price instead of expertise, that margin disappears.

About Joan Kron

Joan Kron is the award-winning journalist who built plastic surgery into a real reporting beat — 25 years at Allure, the book Lift: Wanting, Fearing, and Having a Facelift, and the documentary Take My Nose, Please (streaming on Amazon Prime).

Questions answered in this episode:

1. How did Joan Kron establish plastic surgery as a serious journalism beat?
2. What did plastic surgery look like in 1991, before Botox, liposuction, and modern fillers?
3. Why are "best doctor" lists in women's magazines often misleading?
4. How has social media changed the average age of people seeking cosmetic procedures?
5. Why is professional post-operative supervision essential after a facelift, and how does too much local anesthesia raise the risk?
6. How did reality shows like Dr. 90210 and Botched shape public perception of plastic surgery?
7. Why is the Brazilian butt lift both the fastest-growing and the most dangerous cosmetic procedure?
8. How do injectable fillers distort the face when overused?
9. What's the fascinating history behind Botox that almost no one knows?

Aesthetic Titans #2: Dr. Jean Carruthers, Botox Pioneer17 Feb 202600:30:05

What happens when the physician who helped introduce Botox to the world reflects on how far aesthetics has come? Dr. Jean Carruthers shares the unexpected moment that changed everything, and why it still shapes how she thinks about facial rejuvenation today.

She talks through the early days of skepticism, how botulinum toxin A evolved from treating frown lines to influencing everything from jawline slimming to scar healing, and why precision and restraint matter more now than ever. What started as a simple observation became a global shift in how we approach aging.

Looking ahead, Dr. Carruthers explains what excites her most about the future of aesthetics, from skin quality treatments to scar prevention, and why customization, safety, and long-term patient trust will always outlast trends.

About Jean Carruthers, MD, FRCSC, FRC

Dr. Jean Carruthers is a globally recognized pioneer in cosmetic surgery and non-invasive aesthetic procedures, with unparalleled expertise in both research and clinical practice. Together with her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she revolutionized the cosmetic industry by pioneering the use of botulinum A exotoxin ("Botox"), a treatment that has since become the most widely performed cosmetic procedure worldwide.

Is 50 Really the New 30?: How Modern Aesthetic Medicine Has Given Us A Decade of Delay in Facial Aging28 Jun 202200:17:30

Phrases like "50 is the new 30" are popular these days but is there basis in fact?  Dr. Bass discusses how lifestyle changes in the past few decades and the ascendance of non-surgical techniques in plastic surgery –often termed aesthetic medicine –have transformed how we look at a given age.  These changes have also transformed our expectations of how long we will be able to stay looking young.  Botox, injectable fillers like Restylane and Juvederm, energy based devices like lasers and advances in skin care (cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical skin products) comprise the bulk of what's been happening in aesthetic medicine.  Dr. Bass discusses the role of each, what age is a good time to start and what a combined program of care can produce.

They break down what happens during an exam, why photographs matter, and how to tell if a surgeon's style fits the natural look you're after.

You've had a facelift and love the results but aging never stops. There are features of the aging face that the facelift is not particularly designed to address. Wrinkles and deepening of the nasolabial folds and marionette lines are only modestly impacted by a facelift and upper facial dynamic lines not at all. Plus, you want to get the most longevity out of the facelift you can. Maybe its been a few years since your facelift and you notice some laxity starting to show again, not enough to justify another facelift but enough to notice. Dr. Bass discusses options and planning to make the most of your appearance without surgery during the long stretch of time after a facelift before it might be time for another.

Before the Facelift: How a Multi-Faceted Program of Non-Surgical Treatments Can Postpone The Facelift28 Dec 202100:22:31

Most people focus of the facelift when they think of plastic surgery, and rightly so as it is still the main reset for facial aging. Still, there are several decades of facial aging before a facelift is indicated. During this time, a plan of treatment is needed to correct the earlier aging changes taking place, as well as to maintain appearance and prevent or slow the onset of facial aging. In fact, non-surgical treatments of the face have become by far the predominate treatments being provided these days.

There are non-surgical modalities that are used in concert to create the desired anti-aging and rejuvenation appearance goals. Medicated skin products, laser and energy based treatments and injectables like neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau) and fillers (e.g. Restylane, Juvederm and a growing list of others) are mixed and matched based on what features are aging and the preferences and lifestyle limitations of the individual to prevent and restore early facial aging. Given all the options and the range of aging changes encountered in people aged 30, 40 and beyond, Dr. Bass explains how a plan should be constructed in partnership with an experienced plastic surgeon who has a full range of options, surgical and non-surgical, available to patients.

In the last episode, Dr Bass discussed the technological revolution in plastic surgery.  This episode covers the other major transformation over the past 3 decades, the transition from a monolithic yardstick of beauty based on classic Greco-Roman ideals of facial harmony to a broader view of what beauty looks like.  As more of the population became plastic surgery consumers and the economy became more global, an expanded range of beauty endpoints started to become routine.  Both individual patient preference and a recognition of ethnic differences in beauty goals has fueled the development of an expanded range of procedures and techniques to address patient's beauty wishes is a much more precise and customized fashion.  Improved artistry and customization in plastic surgery has made the field more relatable and responsive to people everywhere.

Don't miss our upcoming episodes on the role facelifting plays in modern plastic surgery as well as non-surgical steps to take before and after facelifting to keep your appearance its best without going under the knife.

Barbie vs. Star Wars: Part I - The Advent of Laser Cosmetic Medicine in Plastic Surgery09 Nov 202100:13:44

Dr. Bass takes us on a fascinating journey from the 1980's into the 21st Century as plastic surgery is transformed by technological and social changes. Tune in to hear the origin of the episode title, Barbie Meets Star Wars. Many military and industrial technologies were being cross-purposed in the 1980's for consumer applications. Coupled with an improved understanding of laser effects on skin, this new availability of technologies resulted in an explosion of cosmetic medical treatments.

This process was occurring in multiple medical fields during the late 1980's and early 1990's and represents an early example of translational research before the phrase was coined. In combination with social and artistic changes in our understanding of beauty for the individual , plastic surgery was on the pathway to the mainstream position is holds in modern 21'st century life.

Proof or Deception: Exposing the Truth About Before & After Images in Plastic Surgery25 Oct 202100:15:27

In this inaugural episode, New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass and co-host Doreen Wu discuss some of the unique aspects of the Park Avenue approach to plastic surgery that were motivating factors in starting the podcast.

The virtues and pitfalls of before and after images in plastic surgery planning and social media are covered in the remainder of this episode. Plastic surgeons and patients rely on images to diagnose, plan and assess results but fine details of photographic technique can foil even the best efforts and obtaining worthwhile images.

Find out some of the tell-tales that images on the internet may be unrealistic representations or simply unsuitable for helping you to plan your procedures.

RF Microneedling Warning20 Jan 202600:20:59

In light of the FDA's October 2025 warning about RF microneedling, Dr. Bass explains what it actually means for anyone considering the treatment.

He explains that RF microneedling isn't your average facial, but rather a medical procedure that uses tiny needles to deliver radiofrequency energy beneath the skin. Done incorrectly, it can cause complications like burns, scarring, or nerve damage.

The FDA warning is worthwhile but provides a single point of view about a very broad range of devices and parameters.  Dr. Bass walks through how to stay safe: choosing an experienced provider, using the right device, and respecting the limits of the procedure.

In the right hands, it's safe and effective, but the FDA reminder is clear: this is a treatment to take seriously.

Beauty Series #8: Beauty Trends06 Jan 202600:12:18

Trends may keep fashion fresh, but in beauty, they can blur the line between timeless and temporary.

Dr. Bass explains how beauty trends start—often with influencers, media cycles, and celebrity culture—and why chasing them can lead to results that age poorly or feel inauthentic. While makeup and hairstyles are easy to change, surgery isn't, and following what's "in" one year can leave you regretting it the next.

Instead, he encourages a more thoughtful approach: recognize what's classic, understand your personal sense of beauty, and make choices that reflect you, not the crowd. Because while trends fade, harmony and authenticity never go out of style.

Customization, Not Commoditization02 Dec 202500:12:06

Plastic surgery isn't one-size-fits-all, and Dr. Lawrence Bass wants to keep it that way.

As aesthetic care becomes more mainstream, there's a growing risk of "fast-food" beauty—standardized treatments that ignore individual features and cultural nuances. Dr. Bass explains how the field has evolved from cookie-cutter results to true customization, driven by better techniques and a broader understanding of what beauty looks like across different faces and body types.

From rhinoplasty that celebrates ethnicity to body contouring that embraces diverse silhouettes, the focus now is on harmony, not uniformity. His advice: skip the trends, find a surgeon who shares your vision, and aim for results that feel authentically you.

Beauty Series #7: Beauty Thermostat04 Nov 202500:13:51

Dr. Bass introduces the idea of a "beauty thermostat"—your personal comfort level with change. Some people have a high-sensitivity thermostat, noticing every small shift and wanting to act quickly. Others have a low-sensitivity one, waiting until changes are much more visible before taking action.

Neither approach is wrong. It's about self-awareness and balance. Those who act early may need smaller tweaks but risk over-focusing, while those who wait may face bigger fixes later. Dr. Bass reminds us that perfection isn't the goal; most people see the whole picture, not every detail.

If you see the issue, your surgeon agrees, and there's a reliable fix, go for it. If not, it's okay to pause. The sweet spot lies in the middle: caring about your appearance without letting it control you.

Aesthetic Titans Series #1: Remembering Dr. Sam Hamra21 Oct 202500:21:00

Dr. Lawrence Bass honors the late Dr. Sam Hamra, a true pioneer in facelift surgery whose innovations forever changed the field. He reflects on Dr. Hamra's path from Oklahoma to NYU to Dallas, where his curiosity and analytical mind led him to challenge traditional facelift methods and develop the revolutionary deep plane and composite techniques.

Dr. Hamra's work went beyond aesthetics. It was about anatomy, precision, and integrity. He questioned norms, refined his own methods, and inspired a generation of surgeons to think deeper, not just cut tighter.

Dr. Bass shares how Dr. Hamra's blend of intellect, artistry, and openness to critique set a gold standard that still shapes modern facial surgery. The episode feels like both a masterclass in facelift evolution and a heartfelt salute to a legend whose influence endures in every thoughtful lift today.

Facelift Series #5: Facelift Friends07 Oct 202500:16:35

A facelift may be the star of the show, but it's rarely a solo act.

Dr. Lawrence Bass and Dr. Kylie Edinger break down the "facelift friends" — the add-on procedures and treatments that enhance results, restore balance, and address areas the lift alone can't fix.

The key is harmony. A lifted mid and lower face can still look "off" if the eyes, brows, skin, or lips tell a different age story.

By tailoring combinations of surgical and non-surgical treatments to your needs, you can walk away with results that look complete, natural, and last longer without having to come back months later for the "next worst thing."

Beauty Series #6: Beauty Lens23 Sep 202500:12:08

Your "beauty lens" is the way you focus on the features that truly matter to you—not your surgeon, not your friends, not Instagram.

Dr. Bass explains why zeroing in on the concerns that consistently bother you (the ones you notice in the mirror every day, not just in a random selfie) leads to better results and greater satisfaction.

He shares how to use your surgeon as a reality check, when to tackle one area versus a full makeover, and why outside opinions should be weighed, but never control your decisions. It's all about channeling your attention toward meaningful changes that make you feel confident, with treatments that deliver real, lasting impact.

Facelift Series #10: Incision Decisions23 Jun 202600:28:45

Almost everyone heading into face lift surgery worries about the line in front of the ear. But the cuts everywhere else around it are arguably more challenging.

Dr. Bass and Dr. Kylie Edinger walk through every cut made during a facelift — from the sideburn and hairline above the ear, down through or in front of the tragus, around the earlobe, behind the ear, and back into the hairline of the neck. Each location has at least two viable variations, and which one a surgeon picks depends on whether the lift is focused on the midface or the jawline and neck, the thickness of the skin, how someone tends to scar, and even how they wear their hair.

They cover why men with thicker pre-tragal skin often get a different cut than women, how a retrotragal incision hides better but risks blunting the tragus, why an anterior hairline cut can be made oblique to let hair grow through and disguise the scar, what causes the pixie ear deformity at the earlobe, and how scars mature over a full year with help from silicone gels, anti-inflammatory injections, and lasers.

The scar you end up with is mostly about your genetics. The surgeon's job is to place each line where it belongs, sew it with finesse, and have the full revision toolkit ready if any of them need help along the way.

Facelift Series #3: Facial Aging w/ Dr. Kylie Edinger08 Jul 202500:11:25

When we're young, our faces have a smooth, full look thanks to well-defined fat pads and tight connective tissue. But as we age, those structures start to change, leading to sags, bags and changes in facial shape.

Facial aging doesn't happen all at once. It's a gradual process that starts as early as your 20s. At first, the face can look more sculpted and angular, but over time, fat volume loss,  drooping, and eventually muscle and bone changes become more noticeable.

Restoring a youthful look often means going beyond just the skin. It takes a thoughtful approach that can include restoring lost volume, repositioning fat and connective tissue, and tightening the skin.

Drs. Bass and Edinger break down how facial aging really works, from the inside out, and why understanding these changes is key to treating them effectively.

Beauty Series #4: Right-Sized Beauty17 Jun 202500:12:51

Your beauty plan should be tailored to you—your goals, your timeline, and what you're comfortable with when it comes to recovery and results.

Dr. Bass explains his idea of "right-sized beauty planning" and why having a personalized approach makes all the difference in plastic surgery.

Whether you're looking to address one specific feature, maintain your look over the next year, or map out a long-term transformation, having a clear plan helps you prioritize, budget, and coordinate treatments more effectively.

Dr. Bass breaks it down into three types of beauty plans: one that focuses on a single area, one for short-term maintenance, and one that takes a long view over several years. Your plastic surgeon is key in guiding you through the process and making sure your plan fits your life and goals.

Body Banking: Why It's Better to Keep It w/ Dr. Douglas Steinbrech20 May 202500:42:18

Dr. Douglas Steinbrech joins Dr. Bass to discuss his game-changing concept of body banking. Instead of tossing out fat after liposuction, body banking preserves it and strategically reinjects it into areas like the chest, shoulders, arms, or buttocks to enhance your shape and keep your body in balance.

It's not just about taking fat away. It's about sculpting, reshaping, and maximizing what you already have. This technique can also reduce the risk of that frustrating post-lipo "rebound fat," where your body tries to make up for what was lost by storing fat in all the wrong places.

Hear why fat transfer to the breasts doesn't always go as planned, and why fat tends to "stick" better in some areas than others.

Drs. Bass and Steinbrech also discuss how body banking may help prevent visceral fat buildup and related health problems, the role age plays in fat graft success, and options for people who don't have much fat to begin with but still want a sculpted, athletic look.

About Dr. Douglas Steinbrech

Facelift Series #2: Does & Doesn't w/ Dr. Kylie Edinger06 May 202500:23:56

Drs. Bass and Edinger break down what a facelift can and can't do.

Facelifts are great for tightening loose skin, lifting jowls, and restoring volume in the face and neck—helping you look more refreshed and youthful. But they don't address everything. Wrinkles, sun damage, and changes around the eyes and brows usually need other treatments.

There's a big difference between how facelifts are described online and how surgeons talk about them. The doctors break down that language gap so you know what those buzzwords actually mean.

Bottom line: A facelift is the gold standard for sagging skin, but knowing its limits is key to getting natural-looking results.

Find out who's a good candidate for a facelift, how long the results typically last, and whether combining it with other procedures might give you the outcome you're really looking for.

Beauty Series #3: Boring Beauty22 Apr 202500:06:06

When it comes to beauty, some people approach it with excitement and a flurry of activity, while others take a calm, methodical approach. When it comes to plastic surgery, boring is actually better.

Dr. Bass explains his concept of "boring beauty"—why slow, thoughtful decision-making leads to the best results. Rushing into procedures may feel exciting, but taking your time ensures you make the right choices.

Of course, achieving your beauty goals should be fun and fulfilling, but on the execution side, a steady, careful approach by your plastic surgeon is key to success.

A Recap of The Beauty Series: 10 Principles for Smarter Decisions09 Jun 202600:17:45

The aesthetics marketplace moves billions of dollars a year and is built to sell, which makes a clear, unhurried head your strongest asset.

Across the ten episodes of the Beauty Series, Dr. Lawrence Bass curates a guide to navigating cosmetic treatments, and this final installment is a reflection on the most important takeaways:

  • A steady relationship with one provider beats scattered, one-off Botox or filler appointments because it gives you someone who knows your preferences and watches how you age over time.
  • Planning gets right-sized to the moment: what you need before the holidays, what to address this year, and a comprehensive view of the next several years.

These frameworks anchor your decision-making:

  • The beauty lens is the feature that actually bothers you, weighed against whether a reliable treatment for it exists
  • The beauty thermostat is how sensitive you are to change, where turning it up earlier favors small, low-recovery tweakments over bigger corrections later.

Dr. Bass also flags the real risks of traveling abroad for treatment, the gap between restoring your appearance and changing it, and the daily essentials that hold everything together: sunscreen, a barrier-protecting moisturizer, and a prescription retinoid. The payoff of doing your homework is spending the least time and money while landing closest to your goals, and steering clear of buyer's remorse.

Questions answered by this episode:

1. What is the Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Class Beauty Series?
2. Why is an ongoing relationship with one aesthetic provider better than one-off treatments?
3. What are the risks of traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery?
4. How should you plan beauty treatments for the short and long term?
5. What is the "beauty lens" and how does it guide treatment choices?
6. What is the "beauty thermostat" and why does its sensitivity matter?
7. Are trendy aesthetic treatments worth trying?
8. What are tweakments, and how do they fit into a beauty plan?
9. What skincare products belong in every routine?
10. How big is the beauty industry, and why should that change how you shop for treatments?

Bare No Hair08 Apr 202500:20:57

In preparation for bathing suit season, we present a discussion of the current status of hair removal treatments.  Traditional hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, sugaring, and threading work temporarily, but medical-grade, in-office treatments are more powerful.

Electrolysis is the gold standard—it uses a tiny needle and an electric current to kill the hair follicle. It's great for small areas, but not practical for large ones.

Vaniqa (ethornithine) was a prescription cream that slows hair growth, and lasers can zap hair for long-term reduction. We can treat all skin types with lasers, but darker skin requires special settings to keep it safe and effective.

Find out:

  • The hair growth cycle, from anagen (active) to telogen (resting) phases

  • Does shaving really make hair grow back thicker?

  • How hair and skin color affect laser results

  • How we protect the skin while targeting melanin in the hair

  • If your hair is too light, can you just dye it before lasers?

  • The best ways to get rid of peach fuzz

  • What areas lasers can treat instead of waxing or shaving

  • The most common hair removal treatment areas for men vs. women

Beauty Series #2: Hit and Run Beauty04 Mar 202500:09:40

A cosmetic "hit and run" is when you get a treatment with barely any consultation, minimal assessment, and little to no aftercare—a quick in-and-out procedure with no real thought behind it.

Aesthetics isn't like grabbing a Big Mac at the drive-thru, though. It's personal, customized, and requires a deeper understanding of how your body responds to treatments over time. What you've done before, what you might need now, and how things evolve all play a role in making sure your results are precise and natural.

Dr. Bass explains what to look for in a plastic surgeon to get the best results and why building a long-term relationship with the right expert can make all the difference in achieving beautifully nuanced outcomes.

Recovery Riddle18 Feb 202500:21:35

What holds many people back from getting plastic surgery? It's often the idea of recovery. The thought of stepping away from work or social activities can feel overwhelming, but everyone finds their own solution to the recovery puzzle when the timing and circumstances feel right.

Spending too much time avoiding recovery can mean missing out on a procedure you've wanted for a while. If you have a big event coming up and want to refine your appearance, planning ahead for recovery is key.

Make room in your life to prioritize your aesthetic goals. If it's something you're going to do eventually, why not do it now and enjoy the results longer?

Dr. Bass covers:

  • Different types of recovery, from resting at home to stepping back from social activities while you heal

  • How recovery time and experiences vary depending on the procedure and your unique journey

  • The typical recovery timelines for popular treatments, from surgeries like face lifts and tummy tucks to nonsurgical options like injectables and energy-based treatments

Male Plastic Surgery w/ Dr. Douglas Steinbrech21 Jan 202500:37:14

While men may not call it "beauty," they're still focused on their appearance and the image they project. Many want to recapture how they looked when they had more time for the gym or before genetics started making changes.

New York plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Steinbrech, a specialist in male plastic surgery, joins Dr. Bass to discuss what procedures men want most, how their approach to plastic surgery differs from women's, and why techniques must be tailored to male anatomy.

Dr. Steinbrech's game-changing body banking technique uses your own fat, removing it from unwanted areas and adding it to areas that need volume. Unlike traditional lipo, body banking avoids visceral fat buildup and doesn't require extreme diet changes to maintain results.

Find out:

  • How Dr. Steinbrech developed scarless abdominal sculpting

  • Why compression garments are crucial for recovery
