045 - Helping kids calm down, why?28 May 202400:11:02

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this episode of Parenting the Intensity, we delve into the reasons why we want our kids to calm down. Anouk discusses the unrealistic expectations society places on children to behave in a certain way, particularly challenging for emotionally intense kids. Anouk emphasizes the importance of adapting the environment and changing expectations, rather than trying to change the child.

By focusing on the child's current needs and providing necessary accommodations, parents can support their children in developing resilience and adapting to the world as they grow older.

Anouk encourages listeners to consider whether their expectations are realistic in the moment and provides valuable insights on parenting emotionally intense kids.

"Most of the time, we need to make changes around the child for them to then be able to collaborate, learn, behave, act in a way that we are that is expected of them."

043 - Essentials for Parenting Emotionally Intense Kids30 Apr 202400:24:53

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this episode I'm breaking down the basic principles of parenting an emotionally intense child which are:

  1. Reframe: They are not doing it on purpose
  2. Helping them be calmer
  3. Being calm ourselves (regulation and coregulation)

There is also some other essentials to keep in mind that make parenting emotionally intense kids different and easier:

  • Expecting the intensity and not seeing that as bad but at the way they express themselves
  • Not escalating (hard hard hard)
  • Detective work: getting to know them like the palm of our hand
  • Being their voice
  • Building them up (they will be put down so often)

"It's okay that they express themselves. It's okay that they let the stress out."

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

Today I'm sharing with you the recording of an interview I was on as a guest for the Joy Reclaimed Summit, organized by Linda Sanderville who was also the first guest on the podcast in episode 14.

I'm sharing how I realized how much self care was essential in parenting emotionally intense kids and how I was, and still am, able to do some in my life even with all the demands on my time and energy and how you can do it too.

I also address how important it was to find the right self care for YOU, the same way you work hard to support your kids in the way they need to be supported.

039 - Preventing Teen Substance Abuse - With Richard Capriola 26 Mar 202400:27:35

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this podcast episode, Anouk addresses the fear and concern that many parents have about their children using drugs. She emphasizes the importance of starting prevention and planning early, especially for emotionally intense kids who may be more at risk for problematic drug use. Anouk invites Richard Capriola, a mental health and substance abuse counselor, to share his expertise on the topic. Richard highlights the need for parents to become informed about the types of drugs available and the warning signs of substance use. He also emphasizes the importance of open and honest communication with children, starting at a young age, to build trust and address any underlying emotional issues that may lead to substance use. Richard encourages parents to seek professional assessments if they suspect their child may be using drugs, as early intervention and treatment can make a significant difference.

3 Key Takeaways

- Early communication and trust-building with your child can effectively mitigate the risk of substance abuse later on.

- Look out for warning signs such as declining grades, changes in social behavior, and unusual odors or paraphernalia at home.

- Seeking professional assessments and early intervention can lead to remarkable results in addressing substance use and underlying psychological issues in children.

"The most important thing that you can do is start to develop open, honest communication with your child. Learn to listen to your child. We're not so good at hearing the feelings underneath those words."

037 - Safety for Your Intense Child and Yourself with Carrie Conrad12 Mar 202400:34:04

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this episode of "Parenting the Intensity," host Anouk is joined by guest Carrie Conrad, founder of Beating Disasters, to explore the challenging topic of dealing with emotionally intense children who engage in physically dangerous behavior. The conversation sheds light on the need for parents to approach restraint from a place of empathy and support, rather than control or punishment, while emphasizing the importance of safety and nonviolent parenting. Anouk and Carrie discuss the struggle of finding helpful resources for parents dealing with intense behaviors and highlight the crucial role of natural consequences, preventative measures, and emotional regulation in parenting. Stay tuned for valuable insights, practical advice, and helpful resources in this thought-provoking discussion on resilient and mindful parenting.

3 Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ How and When to use Restraints: Approach restraint from a place of service and support, rather than punishment or control. We emphasized the importance of turning to resources like Dr. Althea Solter's book "Tears and Tantrums" for valuable insights into understanding restraint from a gentle, respectful, and dignified perspective.

2️⃣ Prioritize empathy and support : while implementing natural consequences and preventative measures for challenging behaviors in children, especially those prone to emotionally intense reactions. It's important to adapt parenting advice and resources to fit your own child and family's reality.

3️⃣ Importance of parent's emotional regulation: Recognize the significant impact of a parent's emotional regulation on their child's behavior and practice self-care to model the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing well-being. Teaching children about self-care and boundaries is crucial for their own emotional growth and development.

"Everybody wants control. But when it comes to physical safety and people or children being emotionally dysregulated or not in control of themselves, oddly enough, we give control to gain control."

021 - A healthy foundation for less meltdowns - With Keri Cooper21 Nov 202300:27:52

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

For today's episode. We have a special guest joining us, Keri Cooper, a therapist who specializes in working with children and adolescents.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with the amazing Keri Cooper, a therapist who specializes in working with children and teens. Keri dropped some serious knowledge bombs about the importance of focusing on foundational elements for stable moods and overall well-being. From hydration and healthy eating to setting boundaries and practicing mindfulness, we covered it all.

We also delved into the struggles of finding balance in our children's busy schedules and the importance of prioritizing self-care for both parents and kids. Keri even shared some practical tips and strategies from her workbook that can help you and your child implement healthy habits and navigate those intense moments with grace.

We also tackled how to get kids on board with eating their veggies and introducing mindfulness into their daily routine. You won't want to miss Keri's expert advice on these topics!

1. Prioritize Foundation Elements: Keri emphasizes the importance of focusing on foundational elements for stable mood and overall well-being. These include physical aspects like hydration, food, sleep, exercise, and meditation, as well as mental aspects such as independence, boundaries, and healthy ways of dealing with disappointment. By prioritizing these elements, both parents and children can lay the groundwork for better mental health and navigate challenges more effectively.

2. Model Healthy Habits: As parents, we have a powerful influence on our children's habits and behaviors. By leading by example and practicing what we preach, we can inspire our kids to follow suit. Whether it's eating well, staying hydrated, or practicing mindfulness, our actions speak louder than words. Let's be role models for our little ones and create a healthier, happier future for our families.

3. Build Supportive Communities: Anouk and Keri both stress the importance of seeking support and building a community of like-minded parents. Parenting can be challenging, and having a support system can make a significant difference. Whether it's joining online groups, seeking guidance from therapists or experts, or simply connecting with other parents, building a support network can provide valuable resources, advice, and a sense of belonging.

"And it wasn't until 10 years into my career that through my own daughter with a dairy insensitivity that massively impacted her mood when she was young, did I realize We need to look past just the symptoms."

056 - How Autonomy and Interests Transform Challenges - With Danika Maddocks22 Oct 202400:28:17

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

I had the pleasure of hosting Danika Maddocks again on the podcast.

In this episode, we delve deep into how autonomy and kids' interests can be pivotal in overcoming challenges, especially for emotionally intense, gifted, and twice-exceptional children.

Danika, a psychologist and founder of the Gifted Learning Lab, shared her valuable insights on how these approaches can benefit not only neurodivergent kids but all children. Here are some key takeaways:

🔹 Leverage Autonomy to Promote Well-being: Autonomy is crucial for all kids but necessary for neurodivergent children. Allowing them to have control in certain aspects can lead to a boost in motivation and overall well-being.

🔹 Incorporate Interests to Ease Difficult Tasks: Engaging kids' interests—even during mundane tasks like morning routines—can transform struggles into enjoyable experiences, enhancing their motivation and cooperation.

🔹 Focus on Expanding Joy to Address Challenges: Crafting time for enjoyable for the child can help improve overall well-being, sometimes reducing the intensity of challenging behaviors.

Dive into the full episode to explore practical ways to redefine parenting strategies for your exceptional children. Let's foster environments where our kids feel understood, supported, and empowered.

"You can give autonomy and support at the same time...A lot of neurodivergent and emotionally intense kids do really benefit from more help, and that's actually gonna give them more independence in the long run because they're not gonna be overwhelmed all the time."

020 - Tackling Homework Challenges - With Kristin Scott14 Nov 202300:53:49

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this week episode, Kristin Scott, who was an elementary teacher for 16 years and is now a private academic tutor, is joining us to focus on bridging the gap between classroom learning and at-home learning, especially when it comes to homework support.

🌟 Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ Understanding Learning Styles: Recognize and accommodate different learning styles for each child. This could mean offering alternative methods for activities, such as spelling practice, and creating a comfortable learning environment tailored to their needs.

2️⃣ Individualized Support: Seek assistance and actively listen to understand your child's needs and challenges when it comes to homework. Adjust the approach to teaching by asking the child how to help rather than imposing your own way of doing things.

3️⃣ Building Learning Environments: Foster a calm and investment-focused approach to create a supportive home learning environment by establishing daily homework time, engaging in hands-on learning activities, and incorporating tangible, thoughtful gifts to show care and support.

019 - Sleep Solutions for Intense Kids - With Meredith Brough07 Nov 202300:47:19

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this episode, we are having an insightful conversation with sleep coach, Meredith Brough, on the latest episode of Parenting the Intensity podcast. We dive deep into the challenges of sleep for parents, especially when it comes to emotionally intense children. If you're a parent struggling with sleep challenges with your emotionally intense children, this episode is a must-listen!

Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode:

1️⃣ Recognize that every child has unique sleep needs: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, especially when it comes to sleep. Children have different needs and personalities, and it's crucial to understand and support their individual development. Embrace the fact that your child's sleep patterns may be different from others, and focus on finding what works best for them.

2️⃣ Foster independence with love and understanding: While different parenting approaches have their merits, it's important to find a middle ground that respects both the baby's needs and the mother's needs. Foster your child's independence in a healthy way that is tailored to their readiness, while still providing the love, comfort, and connection they need.

3️⃣ Prioritize parent and child well-being: Meredith approach is centered on the child well-being, but that also includes the parent well-being as exhausted parents will find it difficult to be their best for their children, so she's suggesting a way to reconcile the needs of everyone while sleeping better!

"But also, there's that pressure of comparing your child to another, thinking it's all on you,

thinking that you're the one responsible for their progress and for them to perform well..."

018 - When you feel like giving up...31 Oct 202300:11:01

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this episode, we explored the concept of giving up and how it doesn't necessarily mean leaving our children behind forever. Here are three key takeaways from today's discussion:

1️⃣ It's Normal to Feel Overwhelmed: Parenting emotionally intense kids is hard, and it's completely normal to feel like giving up at times. It doesn't mean that you love your children any less or that you're not a good parent. It's a sign that you deeply care about their well-being and are trying your best.

2️⃣ Resilience Over Strength: People may commend us for our strength, but in reality, it's more about resilience. We keep pushing forward, overcoming challenges, and tackling each obstacle with determination. We don't have the luxury of giving up, so we find the strength within ourselves to keep going.

3️⃣ Taking a break Is Okay: Giving up temporarily doesn't make us bad parents. It's essential to recognize when we need a break and allow ourselves to step back, recharge, and regroup. Whether it's a weekend getaway or delegating certain responsibilities, taking care of ourselves ultimately enables us to be better parents in the long run.

Remember, you are already doing so much! Take a moment to reflect on everything you're managing and give yourself credit for the strength and resilience you demonstrate every day. And don't forget that it's okay to take a break when needed. Keep showing up for your exceptional children, and together, we'll navigate this intense parenting journey.

"We will all be there at some point, and that's normal too because we don't always have

the energy to fight and to work hard and to learn new things and to apply those things, it's very hard."

017 - Sensory system's everyday impact - With Munira Adenwalla 24 Oct 202300:45:01

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

Today on the podcast I have the pleasure of welcoming pediatric occupational therapist Munira Ardhanwala. With over 25 years of experience, Munira has dedicated her career to helping children from birth to 13 years old with sensory and motor skills needed for movement, learning, playing, and writing.

In today's episode, we'll be shining a spotlight on sensory processing and the way our senses shape our understanding of the world around us. We'll be discussing the general senses we're all familiar with - touch, smell, taste, and sight - as well as exploring three other senses that are often overlooked - Interoception, propriocetion and vestibular (if those words are new to you don't worry Munira will explain them all).

Munira is here to guide us through the world of sensory processing and shed light on how it can impact emotionally intense children. She'll share her expertise on how sensory activities can support children's emotional, motor, and sensory needs, and help them thrive and give us some practical exemples of things we can do with our kids.

Key takeaways of this episode:

1. Sensory processing is crucial for children's development: We discuss the importance of understanding sensory processing in children, especially those who are emotionally intense. By exploring the different senses and their impact on a child's behavior and learning, parents can better support their children's sensory and emotional needs.

2. Movement and proprioceptive activities can be beneficial: Munira highlights the significance of movement and engaging in activities that provide feedback to the body's proprioceptive sense. These activities help children regulate their emotions, improve body awareness, and develop motor skills necessary for tasks like writing. By incorporating resistive muscle heavy work activities, parents can help their children find a better balance between movement and relaxation.

3. Trust your intuition as a parent and seek support: We encourages parents to trust their instincts when it comes to understanding their children's needs. Munira emphasize the importance of ongoing support for parents, providing them with knowledge and tools to better support their children's sensory and motor development. Munira offers resources and links in the show notes, empowering parents to seek further information and explore strategies that resonate with them.

"The parents don't have to become the teacher or therapist.

You're staying the parent and parenting your child with those new tools and are able to help them on a daily basis."

016 - Declutering for a calmer house - With Rebecca Jo Rushdy17 Oct 202300:48:00

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

Today on the podcast I welcome guest Rebeccas Jo Rushdy, Platinum Konmari Consultant and the Owner of Spark Joy & Flow where she guides fellow empaths to declutter and transform their hearts, minds and homes into sanctuaries that spark joy and flow!

And that's what we talk about, decluttering to create a calmer and more peaceful space, but so much more too! We talk a lot on the relationship between clearing our house and parenting and how it help us, and our kids, learn so many great lessons. And don't worry, there's no space for shaming you if your house is a mess here! That's not what we are about at all!

Key takeaways of this episode:

1. The power of decluttering: We share our experience with decluttering and how it made a significant impact on our lives. We discuss the Konmari approche for decluttering, which incorporates positive psychology and gratitude to change our perspective on decluttering from fear to joy. It's all about learning the life skill of letting go and designing a peaceful life for ourselves and our families.

2. Managing expectations: This means involving children in decision making and giving them agency, in decluttering but in so much more spaces in life too, which can help soften any shocks or surprises that may come their way.

3. Connecting decluttering with parenting: We discuss how parents can involve their children in the decluttering process and create a sense of emotional readiness and safety for them to let go of things. And that doesn't just means stuff, but all sorts of things in life that we need to let go of.

"We have to actually design life in a way that's peaceful for every family member because it's stressful for kids to be rushed as well."

015 - What happens in our kids' body and mind when they lose control? - With Mercedes Oromendia 10 Oct 202300:47:23

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

Today, we have a very special guest joining us, Dr. Mercedes Oromendia, a trilingual biocultural psychologist with expertise in parenting, children, and trauma.

In this episode, Mercedes and I dive deep into the world of parenting emotionally intense kids. We explore why children act the way they do and what actually happens in their bodies and mind when they're seemingly out of control.

We cover:

  • The importance of open communication and emotional expression in parenting: Emphasizing the importance of parents being able to openly express both love and frustration towards their child (not to them of course, to a safe person). This open communication creates a safe space for discussing the challenges of parenting and allows parents to reflect on their own behaviors and patterns.
  • Treating children differently does not mean being unfair: Mercedes addresses the challenge parents face when their children start complaining about fairness. She emphasize the importance of parents reflecting on their decisions and being confident that they are doing what is best for each individual child. Treating children differently does not necessarily mean being unequal or unfair, as each child has different needs and circumstances.
  • The power of understanding a child's history and triggers: Mercedes, who specializes in supporting foster and adoptive families, acknowledges that not knowing a child's entire history and medical background can present challenges. However, she stress the importance of understanding a child's story and triggers as much as possible. This understanding can help parents navigate and address their child's intense reactions and behaviors.

"I love my kid. I don't like my kid right now. That's okay too."

014 - Why are we triggered by our kids reaction? - With Linda Sanderville03 Oct 202300:38:01

Welcome back to "Parenting the Intensity!"

In this podcast episode, I welcome the first guest, Linda Sanderville, a licensed clinical social worker, founder of the Joy Reclaimed Summit and host of the Love Yourself Liberated! Podcast.

  • We discuss how our own childhood experiences impact the way we react to our children and how we can be less triggered.
  • We explore the importance of setting up our children to be less triggered as they grow up and share various ways to regulate ourselves and stay calm.
  • We discuss the power of mindfulness practices like breathwork, hypnosis, and tapping as tools to help us reconnect with ourselves and navigate triggering situations with our children.

Linda also highlights the importance of core beliefs and the role they play in our parenting. 055 - Different Siblings Connection - With Shruti Kumar15 Oct 202400:38:17

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"

🌟 Navigating Sibling Dynamics in Emotionally Intense Families 🌟

In our latest episode of "Parenting the Intensity," we're thrilled to have Shruti Kumar, a parenting coach based in the Netherlands, share her insights on fostering healthy sibling relationships, especially when one child has higher emotional needs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understanding Each Child's Unique Needs: It's crucial for parents to recognize and accept the different needs and characteristics of each child. Doing so helps in balancing the attention given to neurodivergent and neurotypical siblings, promoting empathy and understanding.
  • Communication is Key: Open dialogue is essential in managing sibling conflicts. Parents should facilitate honest conversations about feelings and needs, encouraging children to express emotions, even the difficult ones. This helps siblings bond without comparisons or unrealistic expectations.
  • Building a Support System: Parenting emotionally intense children comes with its challenges. Emphasizing the strength of a supportive community, Shruti suggests forming a "village" to aid child development and parental well-being. This includes finding external support and creating peer relationship opportunities to help both neurodivergent and neurotypical children thrive.

Join us as we delve deeper into these challenges and discover strategies that can transform your family's dynamic.

"The most important thing is to help both kids understand that they are looking at the world through a completely different lens and, you know, answer their questions with all honesty."
