• Our son developed concerning rage behaviors in public
• Housing search
• Parent support group silence
• Theatre program
• Despite rejections, our son continues to show creativity and new skills
• We're exploring disc golf as a new family activity
• Looking for positive recreational activities remains an ongoing challenge

Your Child Is Not a Zoo Animal: Fighting for Dignity in Special Education23 Jul 202500:42:39

Send us a text

I share our experience with the public school system when Jacob returned after a previous traumatic incident, revealing the challenges, frustrations, and occasional victories during this difficult period.

• The school promised an "adulting program" for independent living skills but Jacob never got to participate
• Jacob needed three-to-one support instead of one-to-one, which the school couldn't provide
• We struggled with getting consistent communication about Jacob's daily activities and behaviors
• School staff disregarded Jacob's dietary restrictions
• Jacob's therapists worked on skills at home that the school claimed he couldn't perform
• The special education director's accusations
• We eventually had to move and shut down our business because Jacob required more support than we could balance with work
• Regular public schools often lack the capacity to properly support children with severe autism

Send us a text

Severe autism presents unique challenges during summer months, particularly increased elopement risk and the need for constant vigilance.

• Summer heat and reduced structure may trigger more elopement behaviors in autistic children
• AngelSense GPS tracking device provides location tracking and two-way communication during elopement incidents
• Children with severe autism sometimes function better when parents are not present
• Schools often lack understanding of severe autism needs and may blame parents rather than providing appropriate support
• Medication effectiveness can fluctuate dramatically, requiring specialized testing to understand metabolism issues
• Vision for creating specialized respite communities designed specifically for severe autism families
• These communities would include trusted respite, parent-trained staff, and wellness opportunities
• Parents of severely autistic children must be "everything" to their child - advocate, therapist, and protector

Check out the AngelSense GPS device link at the bottom of this episode to help protect your eloping child.

Healing From Within: How Self-Care Transforms Caregiving28 May 202500:49:23

Send us a text

EDIT: I NO LONGER SUPPORT, ENDORSE, OR RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM DUE TO FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY INVOLVING MY MEMBERSHIP.

This one's about us. The caregivers. Not the children.

After watching my health deteriorate despite years of consistent workouts and healthy eating attempts, I found myself drawn to a program focused on nervous system recalibration. What happened next shocked me. Through specialized therapy techniques and somatic healing, I experienced physical transformations as my body released stored trauma. Mysterious swelling disappeared, facial tension loosened, and for the first time in years, I felt my nervous system reset from its perpetual fight-or-flight state.

The revelation came when I connected this personal healing journey to my observations of my son with severe autism. Like a baby bird who trembles at the sight of its mother, my son's behaviors seemed directly influenced by my internal state. This mirror effect isn't limited to autism – it appears throughout nature, from wild animals to domestic pets. As the Dog Whisperer taught us, animals respond to our internal energy more than our external commands.

By shifting my focus from controlling my son's behaviors to regulating my own nervous system, unexpected changes began occurring in our household. When I stopped emotionally

Our Son Lost Everything When He Turned 15, and No One Warned Us23 Apr 202500:34:54

Send us a text

Imagine waking up one morning to discover your child has lost every skill they've ever learned. This devastating experience is the reality for many parents of teens with severe autism, yet it's rarely discussed in autism resources or by medical professionals.

In this deeply personal episode, I share the heartbreaking story of my son losing all his functional abilities and speech within days of turning 15. What began with concerning behaviors—strange vocalizations, withdrawing to his room, repetitive actions—culminated in a complete regression that left him unable to perform even the simplest tasks he once mastered. His 100-word vocabulary vanished almost overnight, replaced only with the phrase "I love you," which he began saying indiscriminately to strangers.

The most shocking part? After frantic research, I discovered this regression at age 15 is apparently a documented phenomenon in some children with severe autism—yet in all our years working with specialists and researching autism, not one professional had ever warned us this might happen. How could something so significant not be part of standard information given to parents of children with severe autism?

Throughout the episode, I detail our attempts to help our son: cross-body exercises recommended by specialists, creating sensory-rich environments, increased therapy sessions, and constant engagement. I share both the frustrations and the rare moments of breakthrough, including a recent heartwarming moment when he perfectly mimicked a Tony the Tiger commercial from the depths of his memory.

For parents with children under 15 with severe autism, this episode serves as both a warning and a call to maximize interventions while your child's brain remains receptive. For those who've already experienced this regression, you'll find validation and the comfort of knowing you're not alone on this journey. Sometimes being a parent to a child with severe autism means celebrating the smallest victories while navigating the most challenging losses.

Living With My Decision to Accept Help From Family09 Apr 202500:38:30

Send us a text

Parenting a child with severe autism often means facing challenges that remain hidden from the outside world. In this deeply personal episode, I take listeners into the harrowing reality of what happened when my nonverbal teenage son began directing aggressive behaviors specifically toward me.

The painful irony of being verbally abused by someone who professionals deemed "nonverbal" created a surreal existence where I developed physical pain responses to his targeting. My body would react with sharp pains in my side the moment I heard his aggressive vocalizations approaching—a visceral reminder of how deeply these interactions affected me. What made this situation uniquely isolating was his remarkable ability to transform into a sweet, compliant child whenever someone who could validate my experience was present.

I share the heartbreaking moment when I found myself telling my husband "he's lying" after our son denied his behavior—a childish outburst that revealed my desperation to be believed. When my father-in-law finally offered help during a particularly brutal episode, I accepted without fully considering what form that help would take. The resulting verbal tirade he unleashed on our son temporarily changed his behavior but left me questioning everything about appropriate boundaries.

Through mysterious new behaviors like stuffing deodorant down drains, flooding bathrooms, and eventually self-harm, we discovered a shocking truth—our son hadn't been sleeping for months. Family members living in our home had witnessed his nighttime activities but never thought to mention this crucial information as we searched desperately for answers.

For parents facing similar hidden battles, this episode offers no easy solutions but something perhaps more valuable—the knowledge that you aren't alone in these complex, rarely-discussed aspects of raising a child with severe autism. Your experiences are valid, even when others can't see or understand them.

EP.41. Navigating the Complex Terrain of Parenting: Severe Autism, Homeschooling, and Healing Journeys11 Dec 202400:29:42

Send us a text

Misunderstandings with family, self-harming incidents, and heartbreaking decisions mark the emotional terrain of parenting a child with severe autism. Picture a moment where miscommunication with my son’s grandmother unravels, highlighting the delicate dance of maintaining family ties amidst the unique challenges of special needs parenting. I share a poignant story of a self-harming episode that led to the wrenching choice of withholding favorite treats—a testament to the ongoing struggle of balancing discipline with compassion.

Traditional schooling was a battlefield that left our child unhappy and unsupported, pushing us toward the road less traveled: homeschooling. With emotional and logistical hurdles at every turn, we navigated through a frustrating lack of support from the school system to create a nurturing learning environment at home. From setting up structured schedules to integrating therapeutic support, we focused on tailoring educational experiences to honor our child's individuality and fostering a positive atmosphere where he could thrive.

Through a non-schooling approach, we embraced the healing potential of nature and autonomy, allowing our son to explore life beyond structured education. Activities like riding a four-wheeler became symbols of freedom and joy, respecting his choices and supporting his journey toward comfort and healing. Amidst all this, we tackled the challenging task of adjusting medica

EP.38: Exploring Resilience and Gratitude in Severe Autism Parenting20 Nov 202400:42:37

Send us a text

Navigating the intricate world of parenting a child with severe autism can be both challenging and rewarding. As a parent, I've experienced firsthand the profound impact external factors like supermoons can have on his behavior, and the importance of understanding these triggers. Through personal anecdotes, I unveil the struggle of handling well-meaning yet sometimes insensitive comments from family, and how I've empowered Jacob to assert himself in such situations. It's all about finding effective strategies to manage everyday challenges, such as thunderstorms, and teaching our children to navigate through life's unexpected events with strength and confidence.

Engaging with a child who has a deep affinity for media can be a complex endeavor. My journey with Jacob showed me that traditional methods, like cartoon-based social stories, often missed the mark. I share the insights gained from understanding Jacob's unique individuality and the broader implications for educational systems that struggle to accommodate neurodiverse children. We explore the necessity of shifting perspectives to better support these unique minds, while highlighting the humor and lessons learned from Jacob's adventurous spirit, from his innocent "I need sock" incident to his fearless exploration of potentially dangerous situations.

The podcast also touches on the emotional sacrifices and personal dreams often altered when raising a child with severe autism. I invite listeners to reflect on their own narratives, fostering a supportive community where shared stories become a source of solace and mutual strength. As the holiday season approaches, I e

Send us a text

After years of navigating the unique challenges of raising a child with severe autism, I've amassed a treasure trove of stories and insights that I’m excited to share with you. This episode takes you on a deeply personal journey through my life as Jacob’s mom, highlighting the power of community and family in shaping his world. You'll hear about the creative ways we've fostered understanding and acceptance in his school, thanks in part to my husband’s proactive outreach in Wisconsin.

Parenting Jacob is a delicate dance of nurturing his individuality while ensuring our family dynamics remain supportive. I recount poignant moments, like the choice to prioritize Jacob's self-esteem over a less-than-flattering school picture, and the emotional aftermath of his transitions to new schools. These stories underscore the importance of routine and personal expression for Jacob, and reveal the profound impact of small adjustments and family support on his well-being.

My father plays a starring role in this narrative, serving as a pillar of advocacy and support for Jacob. His involvement ranges from medical oversight to educational advocacy, demonstrating the critical role of a family in navigating autism. As we explore these experiences, I also touch on the intriguing effect of supermoons on Jacob's behavior, offering a unique perspective for fellow parents. Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with my spouse, where we’ll dive deeper into our family's journey and strategies.

EP.35: New School Nightmare After Relocation, Adult Stuff is Autism Stuff30 Oct 202400:24:08

Send us a text

Ever wondered how a simple water balloon fight could turn into an unforgettable lesson on resilience and understanding? Join me in this heartwarming episode of the Parenting Severe Autism podcast where I share some of our family's most cherished memories, like Jacob's adventurous spirit during our quirky door-knocking sales days, his creative costume designs, and the pride we all felt when he caught his first fish. These stories not only entertain but also shed light on the unique joys and trials of raising a child with severe autism, emphasizing the importance of connection with those who share similar experiences.

Transitioning to a new environment brings its own set of challenges, and our move to Jefferson, Wisconsin was no exception. I open up about the importance of maintaining communication with educators through tools like a daily feedback notebook and how it played a crucial role in understanding Jacob's school days. This episode also touches on the significance of involving children in 'adult' discussions about changes, such as moving homes, to better prepare them for life's transitions. By sharing these experiences, I aim to foster a sense of community and offer insights into creating a supportive and understanding environment for families navigating severe autism.

EP. 33: Unexpected Proposals and Parenting Challenges in Severe Autism16 Oct 202400:36:31

Send us a text

After an unplanned hiatus, I'm back with the Parenting Severe Autism Podcast to share insights and gratitude with you all. I've got exciting news to kick things off: our podcast has caught the attention of some key players who could really make a difference for families like ours. But life's never straightforward, is it? I also dive into a rather unexpected proposal from a podcast platform manager that stirred up some mixed emotions, opening up conversation about navigating the often-complicated support systems available—or not so available—to families dealing with severe autism.

Balancing a family when one child has severe autism is no easy feat, especially when parenting styles clash. I candidly share the ups and downs of this dynamic, touching on how it affects my relationship with my spouse, who has turned to alcohol as a means of coping. In this episode, I emphasize how important it is to maintain structure and boundaries, both for the wellbeing of my child and the sanity of our home. My return to managing the household is aimed at restoring peace and stability, offering hope and advice to those in similar situations.

When it comes to healthcare, the struggle is real, and managing my son's medication has been a test of patience and advocacy. This episode sheds light on the inefficiencies of the healthcare system that many of us face, from delays in crucial appointments to educators inadvertently fostering unhealthy habits. Despite these challenges, we hold onto cherished moments—like watching my son’s unique imagination come alive in a backyard wiffle ball game. As we look to the future, planning for our child's well-being remains a priority, even as we dream of a more fulfilling life. Join me as I share experiences both heartwarming and challenging, offering solidarity and encouragement to families just like ours.

EP 31. Behind the Scenes of Severe Autism Parenthood and Perseverance13 Jan 202400:18:25

Send us a text

Every year as I prepare for the daunting task of legal guardianship reporting, I'm reminded of the unique and enduring challenges that come with raising my son, Jacob, who lives with severe autism. This episode peels back the layers of our daily life, from bureaucratic headaches like insurance verifications and PUNS list updates to the heartache of realizing the unchanging nature of Jacob's condition. I offer a raw look into the emotional landscape of a family navigating the complex world of autism adulthood, sharing my personal struggles with a system that often feels impersonal and indifferent to the realities we face.

Celebrations in our household are different, and Jacob's 23rd birthday was no exception. Lacking the usual fanfare, we find solace in the small traditions that bring joy, despite the trials of limited family contact and the impact of health issues on our routine. The episode also ventures into the realm of social media, where our YouTube channel "Burnt From Birth" reveals snippets of our life with autism to the world, often leading to misconceptions. I open up about my husband's solo fight through the early stages of diagnosis and advocacy, inviting listeners to connect with us as we traverse the seasons of parenting a child with autism. Join us for a conversation that promises honesty, solidarity, and a window into a world that many never see.

EP. 30. Finding Laughter Amid Severe Autism Struggles02 Dec 202300:33:50

Send us a text

Welcome, friends, to another episode where we unmask severe autism, one layer at a time. What do you do when your child develops a new tick - like trying to talk with his mouth closed? Well, that's the recent challenge we've been facing with our son. Aside from the obvious communication difficulties this poses, it's also just one of many OCD tendencies he exhibits - tendencies that the medical field often dismisses as mere byproducts of autism. But we're not letting that deter us. It's our hope that, by sharing our experiences and challenges, we can offer a beacon of support and help to others on this journey.

As we navigate our way through this maze of parenting a child with severe autism, we've come to realize how important it is to question behaviors. Is it medical? Is it a side effect of medication? Or is it just a coping mechanism? This episode delves into these questions, as we explore the highs and lows, the fears and hopes, and the sheer complexities of understanding and managing our son's behaviors. We also explore the healthcare system's role in this journey, and the challenges it poses.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Amid these challenges, we've also found moments of joy and laughter.  From his obliviousness to his demands for a Halloween costume, each day brings new experiences and learnings. And despite the tough decisions, like potentially moving for better care or managing our financial situation, we're here, taking it one day, one laugh, one challenge at a time. So, join us as we share our stories, our fears, our hopes, and our laughter, and remember, we're in this journey together.

Send us a text

Are you ready to be part of a journey that is filled with family turmoil, vacation disaster, and the harsh reality of parenting a child with severe autism? This is a candid recount of our recent family vacation that transformed from a much-needed break into an exhausting ordeal that tested our patience and resilience. We grappled with the disappointing behavior of a family member whose unpreparedness and lack of support turned our exciting getaway into a nightmare. We had to deal with a non-functioning camper and the surprise of missing pre-prepared food, all while trying to keep our spirits up for our son.

In this episode, not only do we share the emotional toll this trip took on us, but also the subsequent family conflicts that unfolded. The rude behavior and lack of respect from the family member invited unnecessary tension, and it's something we refuse to tolerate.  Finally, we share some advice for parents navigating the school system for their autistic child. This episode is a stark reminder that amidst the tough challenges of parenting and family life, the importance of self-care and independence should never be overlooked.

I take you through the unique relationships my son shares with family members, as well as a surprising encounter with a heroin junkie. Even during the most arduous times, we've found humor and love.
