Can Looking and Feeling Good Help You Play Better Golf?
28 Jul 2025
00:49:17
Tyler Hosey's origin story started in 2007; he competed in multiple sports at a high level (baseball, golf, and paintball). He played travel baseball, competed as a scratch golfer, and played tournament-level paintball. But he was undersized and outmatched (100lbs soaking wet at a staggering 5ft 2inches).
His father introduced him to the gym to help him build muscle and strength. He quickly fell in love with being in the gym and training hard! He spent most of high school trying different programs he found online! Unsurprisingly, he was gaining muscle and getting stronger; unfortunately, this came at the expense of chronic injuries.
He was ego-lifting and didn’t know any better. But his body started aching, and he felt tired all the time. He then injured his back and shoulder (herniated disc and labrum tear). He didn’t know it then, but he was overtraining, not focusing on form, and learning the “hard way.”
He spent the next nine years learning how to “fix” his body. He went on and pursued his education as a Fitness Professional, earning (2) degrees in Exercise Science from the University of South Florida (M.S., B.S.), (2) Division one strength and conditioning experiences, and passing TPI’s Level 1 and 2 Golf Fitness Specialist certifications. He founded TSE FIT in 2019 to help golfers lose weight, gain mobility/strength, and play pain-free!
In this episode, Kevin and Tyler's road to becoming a fitness professional. Tyler shows us how to play better golf but in a very specific way. This episode is truly fascinating and well worth a listen. If you love golf, then you are a friend of mine.

Despite his long career in such a variety of very public roles, Poole likes to stay something of an enigma, preferring to let the music and the sports do the talking. In the short 10-year history of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship – and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball – no solo side had managed to advance into match play. And certainly no solo side had ever won a match.
Marc Dull changed that narrative Tuesday at Plainfield Country Club. Amazingly, the 39-year-old from Lakeland, Fla., wound up making history in the Round of 16 with a remarkable victory and then nearly pulling off another in the quarterfinals.
Because his longtime partner, Chip Brooke, had to fly back to Florida Monday night to attend his youngest daughter’s high school graduation, the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up was thrust into the difficult task of playing alone. But Dull was up to the challenge, playing 2-under-par golf in defeating John Ramsey and Chadd Slutzky, 2 and 1, before battling Maryland residents Hunter Powell and Carson Looney all the way to 18 in the afternoon quarters before dropping a heartbreaking 1-down decision.
Dull, a Streamsong Resort caddie, delivered one remarkable shot after another in the afternoon quarterfinals, including an eagle 2 on the par-4 10th hole when he holed out from 132 yards with a wedge from a divot in the fairway. On the 16th hole, he drained a 25-foot, left-to-right, downhill birdie putt to tie the match. But on the 313-yard closing hole – the tees were moved up to make No. 18 driveable – Dull found a greenside bunker and took two shots to reach the green. He then missed his 15-footer for par, with Powell sitting 3 feet for birdie.
Four-ball Rules don’t prevent someone from playing as a solo side, however, it’s virtually impossible to succeed when a two-person side gets two chances on every hole.
In last year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, in San Antonio, Texas, Haeri Lee, played solo in the Round of 32 when her partner, Lisa Copeland, had to step away from the competition to take an Advanced-Placement exam. Lee conceded the match after being 6 down after 10 holes.
“[Chip was] like, you're going to have to play the second-round match by yourself, do you still want to do it?” said Dull between matches on Tuesday. “I'm like, ‘Yeah, let's do it, why not.’ If we get there, we'll just cross that bridge. My game was getting better as the week went on so I felt confident that I could shoot under par out here on my own ball. I knew it was going to be a strong task, but just trying to make no mistakes.
Had Dull won his quarterfinal match, Brooke, a former caddie master at Streamsong who now operates a roofing company, was planning to fly back from Orlando for Wednesday’s semifinals. The two met at Streamsong when Dull started caddieing there in 2013, and five years later, they reached the championship match of this championship at Jupiter Hills Club, in Tequesta, Fla. A year earlier, they reached the semifinals in Pinehurst.
“I mean, for him to win his first match, which has never been done by just one golfer in a four-ball match and then for him to come out, repeat it, and not only repeat it, but to play better is one of the most absurd things I've ever seen,” said Powell. ”And we told him when we shook hands on 18 that he was the best golfer that we've ever seen in person.”
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Marc Dull Marc's amazing golf story and their shared experiences caddying at Streamson Resort in Florida. His story is truly fascinating! If you love golf then you are a friend of mine.

Met Rudy Duran, Tiger Woods' First Golf Instructor
16 Mar 2025
00:35:26
There’s absolutely no way he could have known but Rudy Duran held the future of an entire sport in his hands throughout the early eighties.
Now based at Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero – roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco – Duran was working at Heartwell Golf Course in Long Beach in 1980 when the door to his pro shop opened and in walked Tida Woods with her four-year-old son Tiger.
Eighteen months earlier, little Tiger had earned national exposure with an appearance on The Mike Douglas Show. He had wowed fellow guests Bob Hope and Jimmy Stewart with his seemingly supernatural talent for golf. Are you kidding me? He’s only two? Etcetera.
Soon after, Tida and her husband Earl decided they wanted their little boy to start taking lessons. Earl had shown Tiger the basics using a makeshift net he’d set up in their garage. However, Tiger needed better guidance, professional guidance.
The couple settled on Duran after learning of the hugely successful junior golf program he was running out of Heartwell. He had more than 100 kids signed up, each of whom enjoyed free, unlimited access to the par-3 course.
It may or may not have helped that, like Earl, he also had a military background. It was during his time in the Air Force, in fact, that Duran learned to play golf.
Even so, at four-years-old and barely able to see over the counter, Tiger was a lot younger and smaller than most of the kids he taught. Eight, nine, ten? Sure. But four was almost unheard of.
Still, Duran’s interest was piqued. What the hell? he figured. Let’s see what the kid’s made of.
What happened next changed the game forever.

Caleb VanArragon's Incredible Rise to Making it on the Pro Golf Tour
24 Feb 2025
01:06:35
For Caleb VanArragon ’23, ’24 M.S., the statistical way of thinking has always resonated in the most logical sense. “I love the way it can be used to solve all sorts of real-world problems,” he explains. It’s a personal truth that stuck with him throughout his Valparaiso University experience. As an undergraduate student, he combined his interests with a double-major in biology and statistics, then narrowed down his professional interests in pursuit of a master of science in analytics and modeling.
“Valpo has an amazing statistics program. I would absolutely recommend that students study math and statistics here,” Caleb shares. “The professors are amazing; I’ve learned so much from them, and I’ve learned a lot of skills that I’ve been able to apply to all sorts of things outside just my classes.”
Statistics has even played a role in Caleb’s position on the Valpo men’s golf team. “Every season, our coach has us record all of our data from our tournaments. I’ve been able to use that data and some of the skills that I’ve learned here from the statistics department to improve my golf game,” Caleb says. “Last year, I looked at my correlations and I figured out that the number of fairways I hit per round did not influence my score at all. Everything you do – every shot that you hit – can be turned into statistics, and you can use it to figure out which shots are important and how you’re playing in every aspect of your game.” Just looking at the statistics helped Caleb figure out what he needed to practice and what he didn’t – a testament that statistics is a tool that can be applied to anything and everything.
Since graduation, Caleb has experienced astounding succeess with his professional golf career. VanArragon, a two-time NCAA Regional Qualifier and two-time Academic All-American while at Valpo, turned in a 66 (-4) in the fourth and final round on Sunday, finishing the final stage of Q-School with a 72-hole score of 282 (+2), tied for 36th in an extremely competitive field. He turned in a round-by-round line of 77-70-69-66, improving his score with each passing round.
VanArragon's performance in qualifying school earned him a minimum of eight starts on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025.
He is currently working on his game in Lakewood Ranch, FL and preparing to compete on the tour.

Brendan Walsh - The Country Club Head Golf Professional and Custodian of Golf History
16 Dec 2024
00:53:59
Brendan Walsh grew up in Philadelphia. He was the twelfth of fifteen kids born by Barbara and William Walsh. I guess when your dad is a legend in the Philly golf scene and known by everyone as “Sarge,” golf isn’t as much of a choice as it is a way of life. One thing is for sure, with seventeen in the family, there was always someone to tee it up with!
He has been the Head Golf Professional at The Country Club in Brookline, MA since 1998. Brendan’s last post was the Patterson Club down in Fairfield, Connecticut prior to moving his address to Clyde Street. A place he had put his indelible stamp on with wonderful approachability and by winning the State Open during his tenure. For all his mentoring gifts, people take for granted Brendan’s playing ability. He played college golf at Wooster and was competitive in the Philadelphia junior golf scene. After all, half the kids he had to beat every week were in his family!
The Country Club is a unique place. In 2022, TCC, one of America’s original five golf clubs recognized by the USGA, hosted their seventeenth USGA championship. Since the days of Ouimet 110 years ago, this facility has truly been the birthplace of American golf.
The Country Club. Members can participate in fourteen different sports at the club. From curling to racquets, golf and skating this brilliant oasis inside the city limits of America’s oldest city is described by Brendan as consistent.
Walsh’s career is a perfect fit for The Country Club. To know Brendan, is to know his principles. He is the consummate PGA Professional, but those whose lives he has touched know he’s an even better human being. If our Association was built on the mentor apprentice relationship, then Brendan Walsh is the epitome of that persona 105 years later. Brendan’s macro view of the golf ecosystem is what truly makes him special. Whether it was competing with fifteen kids growing up or winning four PGA section awards, Brendan takes it all in stride. Much like his facility, there’s an understated elegance to his work.
There’s an old saying amongst PGA Professionals when setting up an event. “Every tournament is somebody’s US Open.” For Brendan Walsh, those words are true, even if he’s actually hosting the US Open.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Brendan Walsh discuss Brendan's journey to becoming head golf pro at one of America's most prestigious country clubs. Brendan is truly a consummate professional and a real custodian of the Game. Brendan is very entertaining and this episode has lots of great stuff that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! We hope you enjoy the show!
The title – director of golf operations – suggests the job is more than running the pro shop and giving lessons. And so it is for J.P. Connelly, who is officially the director of golf operations at the Cohasset Golf Club and oversees a staff of 20 people at the prestigious Donald Ross-designed golf course. But cut a little bit deeper into the mind and soul of the 41-year old Connelly, who arrived at Cohasset in 2003, and you will find a golf pedigree. “My dad was the pro at Huntingdon Valley in Pennsylvania for more than 30 years,” said Connelly, “so I was always around golf.” But for Connelly – who grew up in the Philadelphia area, went to college in Florida and then migrated north, rather than south – golf was an acquired taste. “My dad tried to get me to play the game when I was 5 or 6 and I hated it,” said Connelly with a laugh. “He kept on making me play in the father-and-son events. I played twice a year. One year when I was 11, I went out there and did pretty well. I said to myself, ‘If I can do this well and I’m just fooling around, I should be doing this.’” The next morning, much to Jack Connelly’s amazement, he saw his wife drop off his son at the golf course. “My dad couldn’t believe I was there,” said Connelly. “From that point, I was playing every day when I wasn’t at school. That’s all I was doing.” “I was always focused on golf,” said Connelly, who went from high school in the Philadelphia area to college at Florida Southern in Lakeland, where he played golf well enough to consider life as a touring pro. That dream ended quickly, however. “I spent about a year playing in some mini tours,” said Connelly. “But I quickly learned I just wasn’t good enough. I think, even if I had the talent, I wouldn’t enjoy it as much. So I decided to go into the business end.” Connelly began a journey as an assistant pro in Florida and then up to Massachusetts as an assistant pro at the Myopia Hunt Club. When his father became PGA president in 2001, Connelly went home to run an operation that needed tending. Jack Connelly was spending 180 days a year on the road at PGA functions. “It was a great opportunity,” said Connelly. “I got a sense of what it was like to run a big operation.” In 2003, Cohasset made a call and Connelly, at the age of 28, had his first job as a head pro at a golf club. He is at work before 7 a.m. most days and will not leave until it is dark, depending on his lesson schedule. “What I love about this job is the diversity,” said Connelly, who spends his time from Christmas to late March in Florida, enjoying a working holiday which includes about two hours each day of club business and then three to four rounds of golf each week. From there, J.P. moved to Kittansett Golf Club where he serves as Head Golf Professional.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and J.P. Connelly discuss J.P.'s amateur golf career and his journey to becoming a head golf professional at a top level club. J.P. is very entertaining and this episode has lots of great stuff that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! The Ouimet Fund’s 19th annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception was held at Wellesley Country Club on Wednesday, August 4th. It was wonderful to bring the Ouimet community together and promote our endowed scholarship program to a room full of faces that hadn’t been able to gather in well over a year! With a full group of Scholars, Alumni, and donors in attendance, this event enabled Scholars to meet directly with the donors who have helped them afford the exorbitant cost of college tuition.
Prior to the start of the Ouimet speaking program, representatives from Wellesley Country Club held a small program honoring Frank Cartaglia, the longtime Director of Outside Operations at the Club. The award, called the Cartaglia-Lowery Caddies for Life award, is a special annual honor for a caddie who goes above and beyond, and the inaugural winner was Ouimet Scholar Corey O’Neill. Wellesley’s Ouimet Chair representatives Ray Hamel and Sean Rush organized the ceremony and highlighted Mr. Cartaglia and Mr. O’Neill’s outstanding service to the Club.
During the Ouimet speaking program, the crowd heard from a panel of Ouimet Alumni in a roundtable format. Moderated by John Dolan ’01, panel guests Rick Spillane ’72, Grant Kelly ’05, and Carli Citrano ’19 discussed everything from their experiences working in golf to how the Ouimet Fund has impacted them, with each Alumnus sharing stories and offering advice to current Scholars.
Thank you to everyone for attending the event and making it such a special evening. We were excited to be back in person and look forward to more incredible upcoming events. We also want to thank all the new faces in attendance and hope to see them in the future!

Stuart Winsby - Collegiate Golf Coach and FSGA Contender
31 Oct 2024
01:00:15
The Northern Irishman, who hails from Whitehead Golf Club in County Antrim, says he is “loving life” in the hot seat of the Head Coach role and has set his sights on leading the team to the National Finals, just as he did as a player during each of his final three seasons.
Winsby and his then Warrior team-mates advanced to the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship in three consecutive years from 2014 – 16, finishing in tenth place during his Junior year, their best placing in the program’s history.
“I loved being part of that team and we were really close as a group. Most of us were room-mates and we all pushed each other to get better. The bond between us was really strong and we played together a lot. I played a lot of football as a youngster so to get back to being part of a team within an individual sport was something I really enjoyed.”
As a Senior in 2015-16, he was named an NAIA All-American but opted not to pursue a career in the professional game. After a spell caddying, he returned to Webber as a Junior Network Administrator in the IT department, while undertaking an MBA in Sports Management, before eventually being offered the coaching position last summer.
So, what’s his coaching philosophy?
“I really push my players to work on their short games and it’s such an important aspect of the game. I’m not one to stand on the range for hours with them but devoting time to the short game worked for me, 100%. I also encourage them to get out on the course and play to keep them competitive. I’ll give them targets with a scorecard in hand and give them rewards if they achieve those targets. That was something my own coach Wills Murray (an apprentice of Sean Foley) drummed into us – go and play! They know they need to work hard academically too and with me knowing many of the professors well, that helps with the balance that the players need to achieve.”
When he left Northern Ireland in 2012, he may not have set out to pursue life as a coach but Stuart Winsby now has ambitions to go places with a career he is clearly enjoying, firstly with his beloved Webber Warriors team, and perhaps at a higher level in the future with an NCAA D1 team.
“That would be the long-term goal. I’ve got to establish my name as a coach here and reaching the National Finals on a consistent basis with Webber would be a huge accomplishment.”
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Stuart Winsby discuss Stuart's journey as a golfer coming from Ireland to America. Stuart is a fascinating and likable guy with lots of tidbits to share that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! This episode is well worth watching and we hope you enjoy the show!

Dave Raymond - Journalist, Entrepreneur and Former Phillies Mascot
08 Oct 2024
00:39:30
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Nothing encapsulates the excitement of the postseason more than the furry-faced Phillie Phanatic.
He's one of the greatest mascots in sports, and it's all thanks to Dave Raymond, who started as a Phillies intern.
"They said, 'You want to come back?' 'I said, Yeah, what do you want me to do?' 'Go to New York and get fitted for a costume,'" said Raymond, reliving the moment he got tapped to be the now iconic mascot.
"I got measured and they gave me this design drawing. (They) told me to just go have fun!" added Raymond.
He says the organization gave him the freedom to be goofy and embrace all that is the core of being a Phillies fan.
Raymond was the first person to don the neon green tinted costume and wore it for 16 years. Raymond made three World Series appearances as the Phanatic and retired after the Phillies 1993 World Series run.
He says seeing the team and the beloved mascot possibly make it back to baseball's biggest stage is nothing short of nostalgia and pride.
"It's 45 years later and it's wonderful to see the Phanatic do the same type of unifier and do the same type of creating moments of joy for people, and that's so wonderful and powerful about sports," said Raymond.
He now has his own business called Raymond Entertainment and has designed other mascots like the Flyers' Gritty and GMA's mascot Ray.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Dave Raymond talk about Dave's amazing journey to becoming a "True Character." Dave is an amazing guy with great stories and his love of golf is also epic. His story is exceptional and well worth listening to...... that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend!
