Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Beatles - Abbey Road31 Aug 202401:09:12
The Wolf spent 3+ years just a stone's throw from Abbey Road in NW London, just six blocks from the studio that goes by the same name. The studio was EMI for decades until it was renamed in the 1970s after the final album recorded by The Beatles (Let It Be was released later but those sessions took place earlier and at different studios). After throwing out exotic locales for the album cover, George Harrison suggested they walk across the street and the most iconic album cover was born. The boys may not be the world's biggest Beatles fans but to love rock n roll, one must have an appreciation for them. The Wolf remained largely unfamiliar with Abbey Road until he realized he had to pick up a copy if he was going to walk down that street everyday for 3 years. As it turns 55, the boys go track x track, discuss the famous cover and dive into the state of The Beatles in their final days. Paul was trying to manage the band since the death of Brian Epstein and still deliver the goods in the studio. John was getting deeper into heroin and Yoko Ono. George was growing up and saving some of his best for his debut solo album. And Ringo just wanted the boys to stop fighting in meetings all the time. But George brought the goods with Something and Here Comes The Sun. John offered up Come Together and the pre-heavy metal I Want You (She's So Heavy). Paul put together some of his and John's best new melodies for the epic medley on the 2nd side. And dear Ringo gave us Octopus's Garden, a place he'd rather be than haggling with the band all the time. We dive deep into each song, where each member of the band was at the time and where they were going. This may not be our favorite album but it is an important document of a band that had had enough but could still bring the most amazing harmonies to life. On this episode of Rock & Roll Detention, Metal Mayhem ROC Hosts Metal Walt, Ian O’Rourke & Vinyl Vince McDowell take a thorough look into some of the major Heavy Metal bands that replaced their original Singers during the 1990s: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue & Anthrax. We discuss the changing industry & Metal scene in the 90s, what prompted each of these bands to change their original Singer & how & why the new Singers were recruited. In ddition, we examine what impact the changes had on the band, including if the band’s sound changed, what it did to the reputation of the band, & the effect it had on stage & in the live setting. Also, we take a big look into the new music that made at that time, dissecting many of the albums & songs & we have an honest throwdown as to if the new material was better or worse than the prior catalog. In the end, we conclude on the sustainability & longevity on each of the Singers & who fared the best & why, both then & now. And of course, we settle on what ultimately happened, in the end, for each band to eventually decide to go back to the original Singers: Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Vince Neil & Joey Belladonna.   Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon18 Nov 202301:25:07
As Ozzy Osbourne's 3rd solo album Bark at the Moon turns 40, we look back on what was a very pivotal time in the life of Ozzy and his wife/manager Sharon. After the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, they soldiered on with Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) and bought some time with the live Speak of the Devil album. But Ozzy needed not only a new gunslinger to replace Rhoads virtuosity, he also needed a new writing partner. Enter Jake E. Lee from Mickey Ratt (which would evolve into Ratt) who could write songs and deliver blistering solos. And MTV was eagerly awaiting the first videos from the former Black Sabbath madman. On the home front, Ozzy is battling substance abuse, Sharon is at odds with her father/super-manager Don Arden, their is infidelity and while they have legal problems and bad press, they start having kids. Plus the band seems to always be in flux as Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot) has left to be replaced by Bob Daisley who had written and recorded on the first two Ozzy solo albums. And while Tommy Aldridge plays on the album, Carmine Appice appears in the Bark at the Moon video. While some of the songs like the title track and Rock N Roll Rebel would be hailed as classic Ozzy, the 2nd UK single So Tired is an interesting choice for a heavy metal singer but the video is classic MTV and classic Ozzy. Released November 15, 1983 in the US and December 2, 1983 in the UK, we celebrate its 40th by going track x track, video x video and offstage drama from this triple platinum seller. Rock is Lit: Reckoning and Redemption: GenXCore Unveils the Punk Rock Soul of His Novel ‘California Roadkill’17 Nov 202301:03:20
In this episode of Rock is Lit we dive deep into the visceral and tumultuous world of author GenXCore’s debut novel, ‘California Roadkill’. Explore the harrowing journey of three societal outliers as they navigate the shadows of violence, homelessness, and the haunting residue of addiction. From the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the soothing breezes of coastal California, the novel is an odyssey of self-discovery set against the backdrop of the Golden State. GenXCore and I delve into the multifaceted layers of the narrative, touching on the struggles of an adjunct teacher, whose face bears the scars of a student’s rebellion against a bad grade, and two of his former punk rock bandmates, one of whom is battling addiction and destitution, the other of whom thinks he’s found the cure to craving and compulsion. The intertwining of punk rock music and culture amplifies the story's intensity, offering a powerful soundtrack that resonates with the characters’ experiences and the broader societal commentary within the novel.    MUSIC AND MEDIA IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Clip from ‘A History Lesson: Punk Rock in Los Angeles in 1984’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii63ztDheF8&t=522s Clip from ‘What’s Up America: LA Punk Documentary 1980: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01VInkUxmIw&t=14s Punk Rock Instrumental Background Music: 1 Hour High-Energy Playlist Vol 2 Rock is Lit theme music Clip from Season 3 Announcement/’Duck Tales’/Disney Channel [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can’t Stop” Punk Rock Instrumental Background Music: 1 Hour High-Energy Playlist Vol 2 Kenny Hoopla “Hollywood Sucks” The Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter” The Stray Cats “Stray Cat Strut” Punk Rock Instrumental Background Music: 1 Hour High-Energy Playlist Vol 2 Punk Rock Instrumental Background Music: 1 Hour High-Energy Playlist Vol 2 X “Los Angeles” The Germs “Land of Treason” Clip from Lost Angeles homelessness up 9% in the county, 10% in the city, count finds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py65MJC8VR4&t=13s The Cramps “Goo Goo Muck” The Who “Won’t Get Fooled Again” Clip from live Sex Pistols show: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” Sex Pistols “Holidays in the Sun” Rock is Lit theme music—royalty free background music     LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 GenXCore’s website: https://genxcore.com/ GenXCore on Twitter: @GenXCore0 GenXCore on Instagram: @genxcore Rock is Lit EP4, Featuring Janet Fitch’s punk rock novel ‘Paint It Black’, with guests Nicole Panter and Pleasant Gehman: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislitpodcast/janetfitchandpleasantgehmanandnicolepanter Rock is Lit Vault with Pleasant Gehman: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/podcast-vault-feed/pleasantgehman-bonus-content-46jek Christy Alexander Hallberg’s website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/ Christy Alexander Hallberg on Twitter, Instagram & YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Learn more about your ad choices. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: The Darling Buds' Top 5 Songs with Heart (Part 2)17 Nov 202301:04:03
Here's the exciting conclusion of a two parter that's all about songs with "heart" - in the title, that is. The heart is a nasty lookin' thing, innit? But it's a word that symbolizes so much - love, pain, devotion, longing, passion, energy, excitement, life itself. It's safe to say that it's perhaps the second most essential organ in rock n' roll (insert winky smiley face here). We are thrilled to be joined by Andrea Lewis Jarvis, Harley Farr, and Matt Gray from The Darling Buds! The Buds formed in Newport, Wales in 1986, a band of friends who made great music and experienced amazing adventures together. The new 5-CD Cherry Red Records box set, Killing For Love: Albums, Singles, Rarities, Unreleased 1987-2017 collects the band's three albums recorded for CBS/Sony (1989's Pop Said... , 1990's Crawdaddy, 1992's Erotica), their 2017 EP Evergreen, and plenty of early singles, demos, b-sides, and rarities. During Part 2, you'll hear our top two choices for "heart" songs, the glorious new box set, the pros and cons of the modern music business model, the obscene power of the British music media, US vs. UK crowds, the timelessness of classic alternative, and what drives the band now. Plus, hear the 1987 Leeds demo of "Shame On You" from Killing For Love. If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, go back and listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, Vinny shares exclusive stories and insights about his time working with John Lennon, recalling playing with the legendary musician on his last ever live show when Vinny was just 16 years old. Vinny's anecdotes will transport you back to those magical moments, as he reminisces about Lennon's fondness for him and the hilarious incident involving Vinny's mum, John Lennon and a lasagne pan! But that's not all! Vinny takes us behind the scenes of his journey, from quitting high school after hanging out with John Lennon to being a last-minute replacement for Bill Ward in Black Sabbath. He shares the nerve-wracking experience of auditioning for the band and the progression of their shows as the new drummer, shedding light on the dynamics and tensions within the group. We also delve into Vinny's collaboration with Ronnie James Dio, as he discusses their creative process, the making of Dio's iconic album "Holy Diver," and the formation of the band Last in Line after Ronnie's passing. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! If you're a rock music aficionado, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Episode 611 - Ryan Allen16 Nov 202301:03:51
Ryan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. This project allowed Allen to explore a more personal and memoir-esque musical style, reminiscent of post-hardcore troubadours like Ted Leo, and Bob Mould Allen's music often reflects his personal life and experience, featuring songs about his family, friends, and his journey through music over the years. Allen has also been involved in the band BIG LIFE, a group of seasoned local musicians creating Melodic Hardcore music inspired by Dischord Records' "Revolution Summer" era. BIG LIFE's sound draws influence from bands like Dag Nasty, and Fugazi. Ryan Allen's career illustrates a dedication to evolving and experimenting within the realm of music, making him a distinctive and respected figure in Detroit's rich musical landscape. Well, we can now add writer to the list of things Ryan Allen excels at. In the Fall/Winter Edition of Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal, Volume 2, Allen penned the piece “The Ties That Bind Hardcore Punk & Power Pop.” LINKS Extra Arms Big Life (band) Speed Circuit (band) Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal Vol. 2 Thunderbirds Are Now Bracken Learn more about your ad choices. Oteil and Mike go deep with special guests Page McConnell of Phish and Adam Zimmon of the Ziggy Marley Band about their late friend and bandmate Russell Batiste Jr., the legendary funk drummer from New Orleans. Russell recently passed away, so they gathered to reminisce about his larger-than-life personality and incredible musical talents. They recall how Russell's energetic drumming was the backbone of their jam band Vida Blue, which Page had formed during the Phish hiatus in 2001. They shared funny road stories about Russell's quirky habits, like yelling chord changes or needing glow-in-the-dark drumsticks in the middle of nowhere. Despite Russell's reputation as a wild character, they emphasized he was a musical genius blessed with perfect pitch who could play any instrument effortlessly. Set Lusting Bruce - Wendi Gordon - Timeless Truths for Troubled Times16 Nov 202300:51:26
Wendi sent me an email and here is part of it "I’ve never met Bruce Springsteen, but I owe him a huge debt of gratitude. His music has been my constant companion since high school, helping me celebrate good times and make it through hard times. From the time when I danced exuberantly to “Dancing in the Dark” with my then two-year-old sister when she entered my room and begged me to “dance Booce Tin-tin” in the early 1980’s to the time I cried as I listened to “I’ll See You in My Dreams” while driving home from my dad’s funeral a few months ago, Bruce has always been there." She and I had a wonderful discussion, including Wendi and her husband's decision to move to Hawaii, her love of Bruce's music and in a more serious tone, a discussion of the current culture among some in the church. https://bio.link/wendigordon  Learn more about your ad choices. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Kick"15 Nov 202302:37:25
On the 46th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review rock band INXS' 1987 monster album, "Kick." Kick was the Australian band INXS' 6th solo studio album. The album catapulted INXS in superstardom, especially in the United States, where the album went 6x platinum and also selling over 20 million albums worldwide. The album also reached number 3 on the US Billboard album charts and had 4 top ten singles, with one of them reaching number 1. INXS was led by one of the most charismatic frontman of the 1980's, Michael Hutchence. Whose voice, style and sexiness was made for MTV and the 1980's. The band features three of the Farriss brothers, Andrew on keyboards and guitar, Jon on drums and Tim on guitars along with Kirk Pengilly on guitars and sax and Garry Gary Beers on bass. The album was produced by Chris Thomas. Kick featured undeniable hits made for the 1980's radio and MTV like, New Sensation, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and the number one hit, Need You Tonight. The album and tour made INXS and Michael Hutchence darlings of the era. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 44 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. It's Not That Bad - Days Of Thunder14 Nov 202301:01:40
In the 80’s, Tom Cruise was able to make anything and everything look cool…F15 fighter jets? Cool. Bartending around the world as a career choice? Cool. Dancing around in your underwear and turning your parents’ house into a brothel…questionable, but yet somehow cool. What would 1990 bring? Well, more of the same, because Days Of Thunder is not that bad. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Famous & Gravy: America's Mustache (Burt Reynolds)14 Nov 202301:09:50
His early passion was for football, and he played halfback at Florida State University. He was part Cherokee. He had an often turbulent career that spanned some 100 films and countless television appearances. He had a volatile temperament, but he himself projected an air of nonchalance and professed not to take his career too seriously. He was a self-mocking charmer with laugh-crinkled dark eyes, a distinctive mustache and a hairy chest. He did not always win the respect of critics, though had box-office success with films like “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run.” Today’s dead celebrity is Burt Reynolds. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: The Darling Buds' Top 5 Songs with Heart (Part 1)13 Nov 202301:14:35
Part one of a two parter that's all about songs with "heart" - in the title, that is. During Part 1, you'll hear our first three choices for "heart" songs, the thrill of being played on John Peel, Tom Waits in the toilet, major label pressures, a guy who we shall call "Fred", that other Erotica album, LA nights, dalliances with Debbie Harry, Kirsty MacColl, Thompson Twins, Christina Applegate, Cher, Sarah Jessica Parker, the cast of 90210, and getting stuck with Shane MacGowan's bar bills. Plus, hear the previously unreleased demo "Why Bother Now" from Killing For Love. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: UK Rock Singers Of The 1970s!13 Nov 202300:44:26
Generally speaking, when Markus & Ray do an episode of 5 Favorites the narrower the category, the easier it is for them to match answers. (Unlike some recent 5 Fave episodes!) It's one silly part of the game when the Imbalanced Boys take the "road to Vegas!" As is often the case, the guy's Honorable Mentions are lengthy here. Digging into the timeframe of the '70s, and narrowing the parameters to the UK Rock singers should, in theory, cause the lads to concur more often. Can you guess who they have in common? Click through and let's find out! As always, this episode is brought to you by Crooked Eye Brewery! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Performance Anxiety - T Bear01 Aug 202401:11:11
Today’s guest has been through it. But he hasn’t let it stop him.Welcome T Bear to the show. Born Richard Gerstein, he grew up spending time in both New York City and the Caribbean. He was playing pretty early on. In fact, he was invited to his first studio session at the age of just 17…by Richie Havens! Soon after, he was discovered by the KISS camp and began writing with the band. That helped him secure his first record deal, which led to the name change and a disco smash hit called Sunshine Hotel. Yeah the 70’s were wild! Now rebranded as T Bear, he continued writing, recording, and playing with artists like Stephen Stills in Manassas and Crosby, Still, & Nash as well as his own solo albums. He has some great stories about recording the Daylight Again album. But after spending time writing with Stills and working with Greg Kihn and others, T Bear went on a 25 year hiatus. He talks about what happened, what he was doing instead of music, and what (and who) brought him back. He has recently released a new album that has some amazing cameos and a killer core band. It’s called The Way Of The World and if you like songs that tell stories, you’re going to love it. T Bear opened up and was very candid about some of the rough times he’s gone through and I’m grateful I can now call him a friend. Go grab the album, on Quarto Valley Records. Follow him on social media @richard_tbear on Instagram and T. Bear on Facebook. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Grab our merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Billy Idol - Rebel Yell11 Nov 202301:17:22
Billy Idol sold his hedonistic act & lifestyle to MTV in the 80s and it was a match made in heaven. Thanks to Billy's snarling sexuality and his mix of hard rock with new wave thanks to longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy used the fledgling cable channel as not a springboard but a rocketship to superstardom. He'd already received attention and airplay thanks to White Wedding and with 4 singles off of Rebel Yell Billy's star rose to great heights in the US. However, in his home country of the UK, Billy didn't enjoy the same success. Maybe due to no MTV or perhaps the fact that the English public saw him as a punk and wouldn't consider him as a pop/rock singer, this album only achieved silver status in England while going double platinum in the US. The singles Rebel Yell (names after a chance encounter with The Rolling Stones), Eyes Without a Face (named after a French horror film), Flesh for Fantasy (also swiped from an old movie) and Catch My Fall, Billy had 4 charting singles and 4 videos that we talk about in-depth on the show. This was the album that allows him to still tour & perform to this day and while some of the songs sound like they were recorded in 1983, some are timeless relics of the cassette era. Shout It Out Loudcast: "KISS On Tomorrow Show Tom Snyder October 31, 1979"11 Nov 202301:34:51
This week Tom & Zeus breakdown KISS' legendary 1979 Halloween appearance on Tomorrow With Tom Snyder. The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder was a late night tv talk show on NBC hosted by the likeable host Tom Snyder. By the time KISS appeared on the show, the band was already falling apart. However, this night became a favorite of the KISS Army due to an obviously drunk Ace Frehley, who took over the interview much to the dismay of usual ringleaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. The guys breakdown the appearance in SIOL fashion and detail each members behavior as well. The guys then rank this KISS TV appearance against the previous KISS TV appearances they have reviewed so far. So tune in because it's all here, the plumber, the dirty looks and the Space Bear! Episode 610 - Donny Dykowsky08 Nov 202301:13:57
In this business of music, the battle to be seen and heard is tough. Luckily, Donny Dykowsky has emerged as a seasoned combatant. A champion, if you will.  The early two-thousands bore witness to Donny's heroic struggle for existence. It was a life-and-death duel, and during the arduous period of convalescence, ensconced in isolation, he embarked on the audacious endeavor of assembling a musical ensemble that would later be christened as Chesterwhite. Their debut drew comparisons to luminaries like David Bowie and T-Rex, infused with a dystopian tincture. The album wove a tapestry of a science-fiction odyssey, inspired by Donny's own life as a cancer survivor grappling with the tempestuous throes of a toxic relationship. Simultaneously, Donny was cultivating a sterling reputation behind the scenes. He lent his songcraft to a diverse array of artists, and initiated a foray into the realm of bespoke musical compositions for television and commercials.  The astonishing journey of singer, songwriter, and producer Donny Dykowsky unfolds in a sequence of sonic metamorphoses. Having weathered the crucible of cancer, endured tumultuous relationships, and embraced the mantle of fatherhood, Donny emerges on the other side with a voice that is both vulnerable and brimming with vitality. His latest offering, the eponymous EP "Mirrors On The Moon," balances precariously on the precipice of psych-rock and harmonious American.  Donny joined Keith in Thunderlove Studio to have a chat.
