PCar Talk Podcast Episode 224: Cheating Scandals, Legendary Cars, and Power Struggles

Introduction: Welcome back to PCar Talk! Episode 224 is here, and we've got a jam-packed show for you today, covering everything from cheating scandals in the racing world to fascinating stories about iconic cars. But before we dive in, we want to take a moment to thank all of our listeners for their continued support. You're the reason we do what we do!

24 Hours of Rolex Cheating Scandal: In a shocking turn of events, IMSA reports that Ferrari and BMW were caught cheating during the 24 Hours of Rolex. Both manufacturers were found to have manipulated their cars to produce more power, leading to a strong performance in the race. As a result, all affected cars will be stripped of their points. IMSA is now working closely with manufacturers to ensure a fair Balance of Performance (BOP) and holding teams accountable for any violations. What are your thoughts on this recurring issue?

Nissan's Influence on the Porsche 959: Did you know that the legendary Nissan R32, also known as the "Godzilla," owes its existence to Porsche's iconic 959? It's true! Nissan purchased a 959 from Porsche with the intention of dismantling it to study its technology, including its all-wheel-drive system and engine tech, for the development of the R32. Porsche tried to prevent Nissan from obtaining the car, but ultimately failed. This fascinating piece of automotive history raises some interesting questions. What are your thoughts on Nissan's bold move, and how it influenced the development of the R32?

Porsche's Venture into Cell Phones: Porsche has recently entered the world of cell phones with a folding device that supposedly pays homage to the design of a 911 hood. However, opinions on this collaboration with a Chinese cell phone maker are divided. Some see it as a clever marketing move, while others question the relevance of such a product for a brand like Porsche. What are your thoughts on Porsche's foray into the world of tech?

Episode 219:

In this episode of our podcast, we delve into the captivating details of a 912, a creation by a Hungarian company that weighs 1541 lbs, is constructed entirely from carbon, and boasts a price tag of $437,000. With 190 horsepower at 7,200 rpm. We draw comparisons to the iconic Lotus Elan from the '60s, pondering whether the 912 is pushing boundaries merely for the sake of being different.

The conversation then shifts to the Singer car known as the Dynamic and Lightweight Study (DLS), one of the first to be publicly listed for sale. Originally priced at $2 million before options, this particular model claims to have $375,000 in additional features. With only 75 units manufactured worldwide, the ask for one of these machines becomes a tantalizing mystery. Is it a great Christmas gift, and how do you perceive the original price point of $2 million?

Our automotive exploration extends to RUF's significant push in the US, with a Miami headquarters led by Alosia, Aloi's daughter. Does this mark a new era for RUF, and how does Alosia's background, having grown up and worked in various aspects of the company, influence the brand's future? We ponder the significance of Miami as an epicenter and discuss RUF's potential next moves in the industry.

As the holiday season approaches, we tackle the age-old question of whether a car makes a ridiculous gift. Join us in this festive discussion, and stay tuned for more as we continue our exploration into the thrilling world of automobiles. But first, a brief brake, and then we'll pick up where we left off, on this cliffhanger of automotive excitement!

Podcast Episode 233

  • Porsche has announced that it will be discontinuing the ICE Boxster and Cayman globally in 2025, a decision that was anticipated for Europe but is now confirmed worldwide. This marks a significant shift towards EV models as the future of mid-engine sports cars for Porsche.

  • Speculation arises about potential price increases for special variants such as the Cayman R, anniversary Boxsters, and Spyders as these ICE models are phased out.

  • Will there ever be a comeback for ICE mid-engine cars within Porsche, or are they gone for good? Similar to the period without mid-engine cars after the 914 was discontinued.

  • Comparisons are drawn to the cycle of shutdowns and reboots in the automotive industry, like the history of the Camaro being killed off and revived multiple times.

  • Despite some auto manufacturers slowing down EV production, Porsche seems to be accelerating its transition, raising questions about the rush towards EV technology.

  • Concerns are raised about Porsche's decision to cut the Porsche leasing program for non-executive employees within the VAG group, potentially signaling a shift away from previously generous employee perks.

  • The move raises questions about the financial health of Porsche and whether this signifies a challenging period ahead for the company and the broader auto industry.

  • The decision to limit access to Porsches may impact employee morale and the company's image as an employee-centric organization.

Thank Our People: We'd like to extend our gratitude to our Patreon Members for their continued support. Additionally, we were honored to be invited by Charles Stanley to the Ruckus event, where we enjoyed participating with 70 cars and managed to dodge the rain.

Porsche Stock Update: Porsche's stock has dropped 36% in Q1, primarily due to slow EV sales. Interestingly, the higher-ups maintain that EV sales are strong, citing a surge in orders for the Macan EV. However, signs of a downturn are evident, which Porsche hasn't experienced in a long time. This situation raises questions about dealer practices around car allocations, urging buyers to purchase less popular models with only a possible chance at securing a special car allocation.

New Release: Porsche has just released the new 992.2 model today.

Racing News: Patrick Dempsey and Long have recently raced together in what appears to be a Cayman Club Sport at the Pirelli World Challenge, landing a podium finish in second place. This racing endeavor was likely possible with the green light from Dempsey's wife, allowing him to return to the racing scene.
