This week Kevin and Josh welcome back Dave from Razor Broadheads.
Dave has been doing a fair amount of coyote hunting and had a few scenarios and questions he wanted to talk with us about.

1st episode of the new year!
Welcome back everyone.
On this episode Josh and Kevin start by talking about recent hunting experiences, including some specific info regarding bobcat hunting here in Michigan, as well as Josh's last hunt with his friend Todd.
Then we jump into the Answering The Call (ATC) charity hunt that took place last weekend.
1st and foremost we wish to thank everyone involved for making our first event a success, thank you to the sponsors, volunteers, the kids, and all of the people that attended.
We ended up earning $10800 for charity, that money raised was donated to 3 charities, all of which help people get out into the outdoors that otherwise may not be able to.
We had between 140-140 entrants that toughed it out in less than desirable conditions.
It was nice meeting new people, and catching up with others that we haven't seen in person for a bit.
We really feel the event was a huge success, with people having fun, sharing stories, putting faces with names, good food, and a heck of a lot of prizes for everyone.

Kevin and Josh- Recent hunts/gun laws

This week Kevin and Josh sit down for fireside chat and a discussion of "hot topics"
We talk about recent hunting experiences, Josh with deer and coyote and Kevin with lack of deer.
Then get into talking about some "Hot Topics" for Michigan folks.
We discuss several bills and changes that have been proposed and some voted on already.
1st one is the license fee increases. HB 6229: The bill would raise the license to fish from $25 to $38 for residents and from $78 to $88 for nonresidents. It also lower the age requirements for acquiring a fishing license from 17 to 16 years old. Hunting licenses would be changed as follows, Wild Turkey - from $15 to $23, Waterfowl - from $12 to $18, Pheasant - from $25 to $38,Deer - from $20 to $30, Bear - from $25 to $38, Elk - from $100 to $150, Residents wishing to get a combined hunting and fishing license would pay $113. It's currently $75, For out-of-state residents, fees climb from $265 to $273, For a resident adult, from $10 to $15, For a resident minor, from $5 to $8, For a nonresident, from $150 to $163.

During a time when hunting numbers are declining, it seems the state wants to mess with the sportsmen we have left.
Then we have firearms related bills, starting with the ludicrous ban on "colored guns"
Senate Bill 1134 would apply to firearms which have any colors other than black, brown, dark green, silver, or similar colors.
Polehanki also created the exception for already possessed “deceptively colored” firearms before the effective date of the bill, if passed.
For those who possess such “deceptively colored” firearms may face a $500 fine or a year in prison.
Next would be
Senate Bills 1149 & 1150: Propose restrictions on "home built" firearms and the raw materials used to make them. Even though it is legal, under federal law, for a person to make a firearm for their personal use using non serialized components, and selling them is already illegal. This would affect the sale and or possession of 80% lowers and other similar components.
Senate Bill 942: would ban bump stocks, making them illegal to own, sell, or possess in Michigan—imposing stricter regulations than those governing machine guns. This comes despite the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the federal ban on bump stocks earlier this year.
House Bills 6183, 6184, and 6185: Directly undermine the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act by abolishing immunity for firearm manufacturers and opening them up to frivolous lawsuits and vastly increased liability exposure. These bills also mandate the purchase or offer for sale of a trigger lock or secure storage container when transferring a firearm, which again, is already a requirememt.
House Bills 6144, 6145, and 6146: Require law enforcement agencies to destroy any firearm that has been confiscated or returned during a "gun buy-back".

There are more as well, including House Bills 6222 and 6223: Require anyone selling a firearm to report any attempt by a prohibited person to acquire said firearm to law enforcement within 24 hours. Failure to do so would be a FELONY.
SB 857 and SB 858: Expand "gun-free zones" in Michigan by prohibiting gun owners from carrying a firearm in the Michigan State Capitol Building, the Binsfeld Senate Office Building, and the Anderson House Office Building, with an exception for legislators. The Capitol Commission in recent years banned both open and concealed firearms carry in the Capitol and Democrat leadership restricted citizens' rights to carry in legislative office buildings by rule. This legislation would expand and codify those restrictions into state law, making it near impossible for citizens to regain the right to carry in these areas.
House Bills 5450 & 5451: Mandate public schools annually post and distribute information regarding the state’s mandatory storage laws to the parents and guardians of every enrolled student.

It really seems that during this lame duck session the democrats are trying to ram through a lot of restrictions. As we have said before, you voice is the sword we need to wield in these battles.
Contact your reps, make you voice heard. If you don't do your part, you can't complain when your rights and lifestyle are affected.

This episode Josh and Kevin dive into "hot topics". Opinions and thoughts on issues that have arrived or been brought up in discussion on social media.
Issues we discuss are the dumping of several coyotes in a ditch near a local establishment and a school bus pickup/drop off spot.
We go over the "BODA" rules including penalties for violations, we discuss the reason why you SHOULD not be doing this, from just a plain responsible and ethical standpoint to some unintended consequences of doing this, we talk about proper ways to dispose of animals, and available uses.
We then get on the topic of terminology, why some terminology commonly used is best kept (in our opinion, isn't the 1st amendment great?!) in our circle, and not with the public as well as personal reasons WHY WE prefer to use certain terms.
Then we move off the "hot topics" and get into a little bit of technical about suppressors, setting up a gas block on a semi auto, and nuances of suppressors.
And lastly we talk a bit about a couple recent hunts, Kevins deer, and our coyote hunting.

This week Josh and Kevin sit down for a fireside chat.
We start off discussing a little bit about the seasons, archery and rifle, and what cartridges are popular (meaning sales that Kevin has seen at his shop) specifically in terms of the .450 bushmaster and .350 legend for the limited rifle zone, where he has not seen a demand so far for the newer cartridges, the .350 seems to be leading the pack.
We then get into discussing a bit about reloading, how small mistakes in terms of powder and failure to follow the manuals or other established data can be disastrous, we also talk a little about the differences between black powder and smokeless powder.
Then we discuss Joshs most recent archery hunting experiences. The highs and lows, time at the new family cabin, and the value of having family together in a hunt camp.
And to end we talk about the ATC charity event a bit and plans for the upcoming rifle season.

Catchin' up with Razor Broadheads

This week Kevin and Josh welcome back Dave Buikema of Razor Broadheads.
We start off by talking about some recent hunts, Coyotes and deer, including dealing with owls when calling, as in dodging them.
We then get into deer hunting, hearing about both Daves and Josh's recent adventures.
We talk about specifics of broad head performance, the what's and whys of terminal performance in actual field use, and some more testing that Dave wishes to do to find out in the future.
We hear from Dave about Razor Broadheads new offerings, 125gr up to 300 grain broadheads and a new color option (the ever fashionable black)
We also get into discussing the EHD issue, how it has effected the herds in different areas, including local deer farms, and how one deer farm owner has found that he can tell (according to him) which deer are infected by viewing them through thermal.
We discuss as well the mindset of hunters and how it is ever so slowly changing in regards to balancing the herds in areas in terms of the buck to doe ratio. How each hunter determines the balance and when it is over balanced as well as why you want to balance for a healthy herd.

Dom is a Michigan hunter who recently had his 1st successful deer hunt here in Michigan.
We hear about Doms hunting history, and his journey into deer hunting.
We discuss the tools he used, tactics and the whole story of his 1st deer, everything from scouting to field dressing it by himself, and what he plans on doing with it, like saving the liver, but not the heart, as we talk about various methods of cooking different parts of the deer.
We get into what Dom learned from that hunt, how he may change either gear or tactics and what his future plans of hunting other animals includes, such as waterfowl.
We also discuss a bit about Josh's recent hunts and the hunt that Kevin joined him on, getting back into a tree for the 1st time in probably 6 years.

This week Josh and Kevin welcome back returning guest Ross Graveling.
Ross is part of Sportspersons Ministries and an avid outdoorsman.
We start by talking about a couple recent hunts, then get into the topic this week, hunter safety.
Ross has been teaching hunter safety for awhile now to both kids and adults. We talk about Michigan specific stuff, what to do if you can't find your hunter safety certificate, the importance of safety and how the courses are done. Ross tells us about the variety of students from both young and old, men and women that attend the courses.
We then get into Bow hunting and hunting from a tree stand specifically. The importance of safety systems, like straps even for when hanging a stand and the anti-fall devices. We discuss personal and other instances of accidents that could have been avoided by using such systems. Later in the discussion we talk about the importance of communicating where you are hunting and expected times of return, so that in the event of an accident getting help to you soon is more likely.
We then get into talking about the ATC tournament coming up in January, going over specifics about the event like registration, sponsors, rules etc.
