We, the Glass City: Zamyatin's Transparent Totalitarianism

Yevgeny Zamyatin was a Bolshevik who was arrested under the Tsar in 1905 and repeatedly exiled from St. Petersburg, and then banned under Stalin — a man who saw revolution consumed by the tyranny it replaced. His novel We, written 1920-21 and first published in English in 1924, imagines the One State: a city of glass where every citizen is visible at all times, where individual names have been replaced by alphanumeric designations, where the imagination itself has been surgically removed. Zamyatin was the first to render the panopticon city as a complete fictional social system, influencing Orwell's 1984, Huxley's Brave New World, and every dystopia since. This episode examines the novel as a warning from inside the revolution — what happens when the collective suppresses the individual, when transparency becomes control, when the state demands the surrender of inner life.

Wells opens The War of the Worlds with an explicit comparison: the Martians' treatment of humanity is no different from Europeans' treatment of the Tasmanians, whom they had exterminated. The novel is a deliberate inversion of imperial adventure fiction — the heat rays, the black smoke, the refugee columns fleeing London are the mirror image of what British forces were doing in Africa, India, and the Pacific. Written between 1895 and 1897, during the Scramble for Africa and at the height of British imperial expansion, and published in 1898, Wells used science fiction to force his readers to inhabit the position of the colonized. This episode examines how the novel's geography — the destruction of Surrey and London, the imperial capital brought low — makes its anti-imperial argument viscerally felt, and how the novel continues to be read through colonial and post-colonial lenses.

Samuel R. Delany's Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand (1984) is the first half of an unfinished diptych. The novel imagines a galactic civilization of 6,000 worlds in which the pronoun 'she' is used for all people regardless of gender, and 'he' is used only for those one finds sexually attractive. The novel's protagonist, Rat Korga, is a man who has been enslaved through a procedure that removes his will, and who becomes the sole survivor of his planet's destruction. His love affair with the diplomat Marq Dyeth is the novel's center, but around it Delany builds a meditation on how language shapes desire, how cultural difference creates and destroys connection, and how love persists across the most radical difference. This episode examines the novel's pronoun system as a thought experiment about gender and desire, and its place in Delany's extraordinary body of work.

Children of Men: Cuaron's Refugee Fortress Britain

Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men (2006), based on P.D. James's 1992 novel, imagines a near-future Britain that has become a police state in response to global human infertility. The film's architecture is the architecture of the refugee crisis: the Bexhill detention camp, the cage trucks carrying immigrants through London streets, the military checkpoints, the bombed-out buildings. Cuarón is a Mexican director who brought a Global South perspective to a story set in Britain — his long takes and hand-held camera make the violence viscerally immediate. The film arrived in 2006, before the Syrian refugee crisis, before the Calais Jungle, before 'Stop the Boats' — but it describes all of them with uncanny precision. This episode examines the film's prophetic politics, the contrast between James's conservative novel and Cuarón's humanist film, and what it means that its refugee imagery has become documentary reality.

Ancillary Justice: Leckie's Genderless Empire

Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice (2013) won every major SF award — Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke, BSFA — a sweep unprecedented for a debut novel. Its central formal innovation: the Radch Empire does not distinguish gender, and its narrator uses 'she' as the default pronoun for all people. Readers experience the disorientation of not knowing characters' genders and realize how much interpretive work they were doing unconsciously. The novel is also about empire, AI consciousness, and the ethics of colonization — its protagonist is a former warship's AI, a fragment of a distributed consciousness that was used as a weapon of imperial conquest and now seeks revenge. Binti: Okorafor's African Girl at the Stars

Nnedi Okorafor's Binti (2015) won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novella. Its protagonist, Binti, is the first member of the Himba people of Namibia to be accepted to Oomza University, the greatest institution of learning in the galaxy. She leaves against her family's wishes, carrying her otjize (a red clay paste central to Himba identity), and becomes the sole survivor of a massacre by the Meduse — an alien species with whom she must make peace. Okorafor coined the term 'Africanfuturism' to distinguish her work from Afrofuturism: where Afrofuturism centers the African diaspora's relationship with America, Africanfuturism centers the African continent itself, drawing on specific African cultures and cosmologies rather than treating 'Africa' as a monolith. This episode examines Binti as a story about education access, cultural identity under pressure, and the possibility of peace-making across radical difference.

Radium Girls and Rocket Dreams: Clare Winger Harris

Clare Winger Harris became the first woman to publish science fiction in the pulp magazines when her story 'The Fate of the Poseidonia' appeared in Amazing Stories in 1927 — the same year that the Radium Girls' lawsuit against US Radium Corporation was making headlines, and women's relationship to technology and industry was being violently negotiated. Harris wrote about futures in which technology transformed domestic and social life, at a time when Hugo Gernsback's editorial gatekeeping was actively marginalizing women from the genre he was defining. This episode examines Harris as a case study in how women's voices were present from the very beginning of pulp SF, and how the genre's origin myth of male engineering heroes erased them. It connects the Radium Girls' story — women workers poisoned by the technology they were told to trust — to Harris's speculative visions of women in technological futures.

The Dispossessed's Anarchist Wall: Le Guin's Utopia Test

Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (1974) is subtitled 'An Ambiguous Utopia' — a deliberate challenge to utopian SF's tendency to present perfect societies without examining their costs. Anarres is a moon colony organized on anarchist-communist principles, and it is genuinely admirable: no ownership, no hierarchy, mutual aid, gender equality. It is also conformist, resource-scarce, and capable of its own subtle tyrannies. Le Guin was deeply influenced by the anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin and was writing during the post-1968 disillusionment with both Soviet communism and American capitalism. The novel's physicist protagonist, Shevek, crosses between the two worlds and finds both wanting. This episode examines The Dispossessed as the most rigorous utopian thought experiment in SF history, Le Guin's anarchist politics, and what the novel says about the relationship between freedom and community.

The Ballad of Black Tom: LaValle's Lovecraft Reclamation

Victor LaValle's The Ballad of Black Tom (2016) is a retelling of H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Horror at Red Hook' from the perspective of Charles Thomas 'Tommy' Tester, a Black hustler in 1920s Harlem. Tommy uses a guitar case as a prop — it grants him 'invisibility' among wealthy white folks and their cops — but he is primarily a street hustler and con man, not a musician (his father is the talented musician). Lovecraft's original story is saturated with racial terror — Lovecraft was explicitly, virulently racist, and his cosmic horror is inseparable from his fear of non-white people. LaValle's response is not to ignore the racism but to inhabit it: his protagonist experiences the actual cosmic horror of being Black in America, and the Lovecraftian monsters are less frightening than the police. The novella asks what it means to reclaim a racist text, whether that reclamation is possible or even desirable, and how the horror genre's relationship with race must be reckoned with. This episode examines LaValle's project, Lovecraft's racism, and the broader movement of writers of color reclaiming and transforming the horror and SF genres.

The Last Man Standing: Shelley's Plague Apocalypse

Eight years after Frankenstein, Mary Shelley published The Last Man — the first major apocalyptic novel in English literature, set in a late 21st-century world (2073–2100) destroyed by plague. Written after the deaths of Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and three of her four children, the novel is saturated with grief and post-Napoleonic disillusionment. The empty cities, the collapse of social structures, the plague as social leveler — all anticipate the climate collapse and pandemic fiction of two centuries later. Shelley pioneered not one but two of science fiction's most enduring subgenres (the mad scientist story and the apocalypse narrative), yet The Last Man was largely forgotten — out of print from 1833 to 1954 — until it was rediscovered in the 1960s, with feminist scholars providing deeper critical attention from the 1970s onward (notably Anne K. Mellor's foundational 1988 study). This episode explores how grief and political despair fueled the invention of end-times literature.
