Vanished in the Adirondacks: The Chilling Tom Messick Hunting Mystery12 févr. 202600:18:29

In this episode of the Outdoor Podcast, we dive into one of the most chilling and mysterious true outdoor stories ever reported.

On November 15, 2015, 82-year-old hunter Tom Messick entered the woods near Brant Lake in New York’s Adirondack Mountains with six other men for what was supposed to be a routine deer drive. Positioned as a stander while the others pushed deer toward him, Tom was an experienced outdoorsman familiar with the terrain.

But something strange happened that day.

The woods were described as eerily quiet. One hunter reported hearing an unusual sound shortly before the group realized Tom was missing. Despite massive search efforts involving hundreds of volunteers, K9 units, helicopters, state police, and even the FBI, no trace of Tom Messick was ever found. His rifle and walkie-talkie disappeared with him, and he never responded to radio calls.

Was it a tragic accident? A medical emergency? Or something far more mysterious?

This is a true outdoor story that continues to puzzle investigators and haunt the hunting community to this day.

In this episode, we tackle “The Crossbow Wars”—the ongoing debate surrounding crossbow use, hunting ethics, and fair chase—with Jay Pinsky from Outdoor Wire and Archery Wire.

As crossbows become more common in archery seasons, opinions are divided. Jay brings an industry-wide perspective to discuss the ethical arguments, misconceptions, and realities behind crossbow hunting, and how hunters can move forward while protecting conservation, access, and public perception.

🎙️ Topics include:

• The Crossbow Wars explained

• Ethics vs technology in hunting

• Crossbows and fair chase

• Crossbow vs compound bow debates

• Conservation and hunter unity

This is a must-watch podcast for anyone passionate about archery, bowhunting, and the future of hunting.

In this episode, Dave Thomas and Jay Pinsky discuss the ongoing debate surrounding crossbows in the hunting community. They explore the ethics of hunting, the impact of crossbows on new hunters, and the importance of inclusivity within the archery community. The conversation also delves into the business side of archery, highlighting the role of the Archery Wire and Outdoor Wire in disseminating industry news and innovations in archery equipment.

Crossbows are often unfairly criticized by traditional bow hunters.

The hunting community should focus on inclusivity rather than division.

New hunters often find crossbows to be a more accessible entry point into the sport.

The Archery Wire and Outdoor Wire serve as vital platforms for industry news.

Innovation in archery equipment benefits all types of hunters.

Community support is crucial for the future of hunting rights.

The relationship between manufacturers and consumers is important for product development.

Crossbows have brought new participants into the hunting community.

The stories behind the products are as important as the products themselves.

We sit down with longtime Team BHP members Ron and Jay to break down an entire bowhunting season — the wins, the losses, the missed shots, and the lessons that only come from decades in the field. From public land pressure to northern Michigan cedar swamps, this conversation dives deep into what bowhunting actually looks like when the cameras aren’t staged.

We talk about:

The reality of filming hunts and how editing can change perception

Why public land bowhunting is harder than ever

How deer jump the string, even at close range

Shot angles, penetration, shoulder hits, and why things go wrong

Mechanical vs fixed blade broadheads

Missed shots, wounded deer, and doing everything possible to recover them

The emotional rollercoaster of bowhunting — from buck of a lifetime opportunities to empty-handed seasons

The tradition and meaning behind hunting Hubbard Lake, a place passed down through generations

This episode isn’t about highlight reels or guaranteed kills — it’s about honest bowhunting, hard decisions, long sits, and the mental game that keeps hunters coming back year after year.

Outdoor Podcast - 2025 EASTON LAUNCH (NEW FMJ MAX & 5.0)05 déc. 202400:36:49

Chatting with Gary from Easton on the new arrows they launched for 2025.

The Easton 5.0 is the all-new lightweight, small diameter hunting arrow, designed for bowhunters seeking a versatile shaft that offers multiple setup options. Built on a micro-diameter 5mm Acu-Carbon platform, the Easton 5.0 reduces friction for enhanced penetration and decreases wind resistance for greater accuracy and higher velocity downrange. The lighter overall mass weight of the Easton 5.0 also allows for a versatile range of arrow setup options, from lightweight speed builds to high-FOC configurations.

Crafted in the USA using Easton’s seamless Acu-Carbon process and high-modulus carbon fiber, the 5.0 ensures consistent weight and spine in every shaft and across every dozen. Available in six spine sizes (200, 250, 300, 340, 400, and 500), the Easton 5.0 accommodates virtually all bowhunting setups. The 5.0 features Easton’s new 5MM Microlite™ Nock System, which includes a more compact nock body and a redesigned throat for better string fit and enhanced tunability. Available in both standard and Match Grade™ versions.

SPECIFICATIONS

5MM high-modulus lightweight carbon fiber with Acu-Carbon construction

NEW Microlite 5MM nocks

Two 8-32 insert options: HIT or NEW 50-grain steel one-piece half-outs

HIT Collars included with the Match Grade version

2” Blazer vanes (standard grade) or 3” AAE Hybrid Stealth factory helical fletched vanes (Match Grade)

Straightness: +/- .003” Standard

Made in USA

Available in both standard and Match Grade versions

Introducing the all-new Easton 5mm FMJ MAX. The new FMJ MAX combines the renowned power of Full Metal Jacket arrows with the enhanced velocity of a lighter-weight platform. Engineered for versatile, blended performance, FMJ MAX allows for faster speeds to the target or higher FOC (Front of Center) arrow builds to boost accuracy. Crafted in the USA, the 5mm FMJ MAX features a seamless Easton Acu-Carbon core fused with a precision aluminum jacket. The synergy of combining carbon and aluminum creates greater ballistic efficiency, higher energy at impact, and increases momentum, making it the ideal shaft for taking down big game.

The FMJ MAX utilizes the new 5mm Microlite Nock System, featuring shorter ears and an improved throat design for increased forgiveness and easier tuning. Finished with a hard-anodized OD Green matte diamond plate aesthetic, FMJ MAX arrows are available in both standard and Match Grade versions and come in five spines (200, 250, 300, 340, 400) to fit virtually any bowhunting setup.

Power, penetration, and higher velocity combine to make FMJ MAX the go-to arrow for archery’s most serious bowhunters.
