#082 Growing Creativity in Gifted Kids w/ Stephanie Higgs10 May 202300:46:10

In this episode we’re talking to one of our favourite gifted educators and differentiation coach, Stephanie Higgs, about how we can all grow our creativity muscle, especially in our gifted kids.

Memorable quote… “

“When we broaden that definition of what creativity even looks like, I think a lot more of us fit under that umbrella than we would initially think. And then even those of us who don't feel like it comes as naturally - that's one of the things I'm here to share today, is how we can grow and refine that area of talent.” - Stephanie Higgs

Bio…

Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. She has devoted her entire professional life to education, teaching in two of Tennessee’s three grand divisions.

Stephanie earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she then taught for six years at a museum magnet school and helped students achieve up to three years’ growth in reading in a single year.

After relocating to Middle Tennessee, Stephanie became a fourth-grade teacher, which had been her dream since she was a fourth grader herself! In 2019, Stephanie became a gifted educator and differentiation coach, where the staff quickly named her their Teacher of the Year before being named a region-level semi-finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Soon after, Stephanie was honoured with the TAG (Tennessee Association for the Gifted) Horizon Award, which is given to a gifted educator demonstrating promise and leadership in the field.

Later, Stephanie was named the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) Teacher of the Year. Stephanie recently graduated with an additional graduate degree from Tennessee State University in Instructional Leadership and now serves on the executive board as secretary for the Tennessee Association for the Gifted.

#080 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Year of School - 5 Things You Need To Know19 Apr 202300:51:10

In this episode, our host Sophia Elliott takes us through the big 5 things you need to know about a gifted kids' first year of school.

  1. When should my gifted child go to school?

  2. Where should my gifted child go to school?

  3. How do I work with the School?

  4. What do I need to know about the academic journey?

  5. How do we get through the year looking after their social and emotional well-being?

Memorable quote… “

“What are the top five things that we really need to know as parents?

This episode is kind of like the cliff notes, and maybe that's showing my age. Anyone born after the seventies may not know what Cliff notes are, but back in the day, if you had to do an assignment on a book, but you didn't have time to read the book you would buy a tiny little book called Cliff Notes, which just told you about the book.

They were great. So this episode's like the Cliff Notes on the previous episodes and all the great things that you need to know about that first year of school and a bunch of extra tips.

So thank you so much for joining us on this.” - Sophia Elliott

#079 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School #3, Part 2 w/ Jess Farago09 Apr 202300:50:39

We're talking to Jess Farago, a provisional psychologist, and mum of a gifted child this week and today Part 2 of that conversation goes out.

In this episode Jess shares how the second half of her son's first year of school went and all the tips and tricks she's discovered along the way.

Memorable quote… “

"I like to do things with people and socialise and hang out with friends but I also found when we spent our holidays with more downtime than social time, it was so much better for him.

I saw a different child starting one term when spent the last week of holidays doing nothing.

We just hung out at home. Took the dog for a walk, hung out with family, and caught up with a couple of friends, but it was a really low-key break.

He went back so refreshed." - Jess Farago

Bio…

Jess Farago is the mum of a gifted son; a 5-year-old who has recently completed his first year of primary school.

In addition, Jess is a provisional psychologist who has a passion for neurodivergence and understanding the gifted and neurodiverse brain and behaviour.

Jess observed differences between her son and other children when her son was a baby, and it was drawn to her attention by professionals, that her son might be gifted and to monitor it. Therefore, the journey of extensive gifted research, reading, understanding and ongoing observation began.

Jess has found the path of being a mum to a gifted child filled with so much joy, however, it has not been easy and is exhausting.

Some of the most challenging parts for Jess over the last 5 years has been with the stigma attached to the word 'gifted'. For years she felt isolated and that there was little to no support out there. But that didn't stop Jess from ensuring her son received as much support as possible wherever he went and that she advocated for him. This is where Jess found navigating the mainstream school system a challenge.

Jess has good knowledge of the education system having worked in the school system and has been faced with some very positive experiences, however, there have been some big challenges in the mainstream school setting concerning her son.

Memorable quote… “

“There's a stigma attached to it, which I found really hard dealing with. And I still do. I'm getting a lot more confident about it.

But my heart races if someone says, ‘oh wow… look at [his] writing, look at his reading… you should have him assessed’. ‘Oh, I have, actually, he's gifted…’

But my heart's racing. I'm so used to the eye roll…

It's really challenging… We are like a little team. It's definitely been difficult but it's also been amazing.” - Jess Farago

#077 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series #2 Part 2 w/ Stephanie Higgs31 Mar 202300:31:41

Today we finish our conversation with gifted educator and differentiation coach Stephanie Higgs, in part 2 of episode 2, in the Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series.

We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners?

Memorable quote… “

”A lot of our listeners are going to be parents, but I'm coming from the educational side, so I love partnering and saying we are a team. First and foremost, we are a team. You as the parent are your child's biggest advocate and you know them best.

I have more experience on the education side and I have some background and some expertise and years of experience there. But you know your child the best. But the best part is we're both huge strong advocates for your kids. So we are a team.

And so I think that kind of frees up some of that, ‘am I overstepping?’ ‘Am I saying too much?’

But you do know your kid best and you've had… four or five or six years of every minute, every day with this kiddo and a teacher is new to that picture. And so we do have to partner, we have to link... we really have to work together.” - Stephanie Higgs

#076 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series #2 Part 1 w/ Stephanie Higgs29 Mar 202300:31:55

In episode 2 of Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series, we’re talking to gifted educator and differentiation coach from Nashville, Tennessee, Stephanie Higgs.

We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners?

Memorable quote… “

”One of the norms that we've established in my class is to lean into struggle.

And again, if we wait until these kids are older to identify them or to serve them, it's really uncomfortable for them to lean into struggle because they have been set on cruise control for all this time in class.

And so, it's really nice and powerful and we can start that at a young age because not only can we challenge them academically, but we can really pair that with some social-emotional support for how to handle challenges, how to lean into struggle, how to develop that stamina and that perseverance what that says about us as learners.

Because I think sometimes it becomes almost an affront on who we are as a person when so much of our identity is in our intellect and in schooling, and all of a sudden it's challenging. What does that say about me if I can't do this? What if someone finds out that I don't know how to solve this problem?

If we normalise that from the very beginning, we can teach those in tandem all the way.” - Stephanie Higgs

#075 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series #1 Part 2 w/ Emily27 Mar 202300:35:16

We continue our conversation today, in Part 2 of Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series with Emily. Emily is a mum navigating those big questions with her gifted child who has just started reception (prep).

This two-part episode covers when our gifted kids should start school, where they should go to school, what expectations we should have and much more…

Memorable quote…

“I think at the beginning of the year for us, we did think it was as simple as, do we go to our locally zoned government school, which we could walk to, or a local private school, which we could also walk to. And we thought that it was as simple as that. They were the two choices.

And then suddenly, we were considering relocating and just anything became an option. But you're also,  considering logistics and working, how are you supposed to do drop-offs and pickups whilst working and everything else?

It felt like our whole life was kind of thrown up in the air and everything was an option, but then so many options were taken away as well.” - Emily

#074 Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series #1 Part 1 w/ Emily22 Mar 202300:43:27

Today we start our Parents Guide to Gifted Kids’ First Years of School Series with Emily. Emily is a mum navigating those big questions with her gifted child who has just started reception (prep).

This two-part episode covers when our gifted kids should start school, where they should go to school, what expectations we should have and much more…

Memorable quote…

“The big question that I had [for the educational psychologist] was, do you think he should be going to school next year? Do you think he's ready for school next year?

And she actually flipped that question on me and said, ‘it's not about when it's about where. Now that you know that he's gifted, you now need to make a really considered decision about where you send him to school’.

And I thought that this day, this assessment was going to almost close the chapter and be like, okay, you've got your answer now get on with your life.

But it was just the beginning of everything.” - Emily

Over the last couple of years, my husband and I and our family have made different decisions around Christmas. And they have been decisions in response to… Where are we at? Memorable Quote

“When we think of strength based learning we're really talking about focusing… where the energy or where the mind goes… everything flows… and a strength based education is just a choice to focus on here, the strength area, and just bring this up knowing that this [the area of deficit] will come to.

It's a choice that we make as educators and as mentors, as psychologists, as a therapist, everyone to say, yes, there are these areas, there are these struggle areas, but we also need to focus on developing, primarily, the strength areas, the areas that feel good and know that everything else will follow suit.” – Sam Young

“At its core, deficit-based learning… steeps our students… in a space where they are not thriving and it constantly reminds them… of where they're struggling, how they're coming up short and what they're not doing. And that has been shown to have real consequences on their psyche, on their self-worth, on their self-esteem, on confidence and their ability to then be successful in this life. Paradoxically, by helping someone bring the bottom up, so to speak, you're actually harming them.” – Sam Young

Josh Smith

Free Mind Skate School was founded by Josh Smith, a local skateboarder who has been skating in Adelaide for 20+yrs. Josh has become well known in the skate community and to local councils over the years due to his constant involvement in the facilitation of skate-related events and competitions, as well as being a competition judge with the Australian Skateboard Federation. On top of that, for nearly half a decade Josh has been seen at skateparks across Adelaide coaching beginners to help boost the next generation of Adelaide skaters. What started as a part-time job while studying full-time all those years ago, has turned into a way of life.

As well as being an avid skater, Stigma Stall mentor Josh also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioural Science and has vast experience in youth mentoring/engagement. Using positive mentorship through skateboarding to build a trusting and informal relationship, this serves as the foundation that positive change can be built upon.

Skateboarders are incredibly resilient, which comes from years of mastering their craft. In life we must get back up when we fall, and although falling is inevitable at times, this does not have to mean failure. Through progression in their skating, clients see within themselves that positive change is possible in their life. This inherently promotes clients to willingly take responsibility for their own future, whilst continually building confidence and developing resilience.

Kate was raised in rural SA and was a first-generation university attendee. She taught on Pitjantjatjara land, leading the special needs programs and co-facilitating the aboriginal inclusion programs with Aboriginal elders. Kate is grateful to be able to live and work on Kaurna land.

Her passion developed from her experiences of growing up 'thinking, learning and experiencing my world differently'. She found ways to thrive in her own unique way in a world that is not designed for people who are different. This gives her valuable insights and a natural ability to relate.

Kate's work experiences include researching disability inclusion in Norway, working with youth at risk in Canada and supporting children with severe and complex needs in the Cook Islands and rural Australia. Kate has facilitated many parent support groups and committees.

Kate's learning journey really began when she became a parent to 2 neurodivergent girls and began to explore her own neurodivergence from a neurodivergent-affirming perspective.

Kate has supported hundreds of neurodivergent people and their families, educators, therapists & employers in the last 20 years. Kate has a deep understanding of neurodivergence which she uses to mentor, educate and support regardless of where people are on their journey.

Memorable Quote

“There's so much more now about what to do when you're raising a gifted child… but, very little looking at what the parents are going through and their experiences and as we know, raising a gifted or twice exceptional child is challenging in ways that folks with neurotypical kids may not experience.

A lot of the intensity and heightened sensitivity and quirkiness and asynchronous development, all of that make it a more challenging job, on top of the fact that it often falls on parents to advocate in the schools or figure out some way of patching together a more enriching education for them.

So it's quite a challenge and that leaves families with a lot of emotions that are really hard to talk about… there's very little that's written about it.” – Dr Gail Post

Memorable Quote

Kintara Phillips - “Are they getting a hundred percent on all their tests?

Are they getting perfect marks on all of their English essays? Which on the surface parents would be like, well, that's amazing. Like what are you complaining about?

I'm complaining because if my kid, with no effort, gets 100%, could they have gotten a hundred at the start of the unit? The conversations I have with teachers are like, I'm a happy parent when my kids test results are around 75, 80%. It means you've pitched it well. We've got that point where there's stuff he doesn't know.”

Sophia Elliott – “Yeah. The sacred ground of the stuff they don't know. Absolutely.”

Bio

Kintara Phillips worked as a Secondary English teacher for 21 years across government, independent and catholic schools. After a principal suggested that her ‘gut feeling’ about extending the gifted students in her class needed to be backed by some evidence – always the overachiever, she completed a Masters in Gifted Education at UNSW in 2016 and presented said evidence at the International Gifted Conference later the same year (and yes, her gut feeling was right). Leaving the classroom in 2021, frustrated by the restrictive system and desperate to find a way to shake things up, she now finds herself almost halfway through a Graduate Diploma in Psychology and plans to complete honours then a Masters in Educational Psychology sometime before she turns 50.

Earlier this year, Kintara was formally diagnosed with ADHD, confirming her place in the2e community and further strengthening her passion for supporting young people and their families, but also educating teachers to be able to provide better inclusions and educational outcomes for gifted and 2e learners. Longer term she hopes to blend her years of classroom experience and psychology training to bridge the gap between schools, psychologists and gifted education and would love nothing more than to see her name mentioned when parents ask about for recommendations for a psychologist experienced with giftedness in the future.

Kintara currently teaches in the Masters of Teaching at two Victorian Universities, and hopes that by employing the butterfly effect and mentioning gifted learners frequently, even if it’s not in the course outline, to the future teacher’s she works with, that perhaps a little shake up may occur in schools sooner than later.

In all her spare time, Kintara and her teacher bestie, have started to build and nurture a small business specifically positioned to support gifted students navigate school, help families plan and advocate and work in schools with teachers providing professional learning opportunities that build understanding of gifted learning needs.

Memorable Quote

“From a teacher perspective… I read posts and I read comments that parents are making about teachers and it hurts my heart. And I get it from both sides. I can see that these parents are tired and they don’t know what to do and at the same time it hurts my heart for my colleagues who I know if they knew better, they would do better. And I know they don't know better and it's not their fault [they are not trained in gifted].

But I also recognize there are teachers out there who don't want to know better and they don't care.  And that's also the reality and I'm embarrassed for those people. I apologize to parents on behalf of people I don't even know who have had to encounter that.

So I think, with my teacher head on, I do ask parents to consider when you are going into these kinds of meetings, go in without your armour, go in expecting that the teachers probably won't know a lot and go in and give your teachers a bit of grace and that where the goal is this shared understanding.

This wanting to learn together, not us and them, not school and home. This team around our young people, we're all part of it…. I always, anytime anything's a bit awkward or uncomfortable or could potentially be that conflict kind of conversation, I always go in and remind myself that I need to understand the other person’s why.” – Kintara Phillips

#060 How to Tell Your Child They are Gifted w/ Dr Gail Post01 Sep 202200:57:25

Memorable Quote

“If you don't someone else will, and someone else will put information in their head that maybe you're not thrilled with or will overinflate the importance of it or confuse them. So, it's up to us to explain it to them and what I think is really important to consider…is, you need to take into account their age, their maturity, their developmental level, because what you say to a five-year-old is different from a 10-year-old or a 15 year old.

You have to think about what they can take in and really to talk to them about it as it's no big deal, just be as matter of fact as possible because it's just part of who they are.

It's not an accomplishment, they didn't accomplish anything. It's just who they are.

And just letting them know it's no different than your eye colour or your height. Or the fact that maybe you need glasses or the fact that you love peanut butter. I mean, these are all parts of who you are, and it's really important just to be as matter of fact as possible.” – Dr Gail Post

He has taught many elementary students college-level biochemistry and organic chemistry.” – Hui, an Our Gifted Kids podcast listener

Memorable Quote

“It was only once we entered school that I noticed that it wasn't quite right. There was something else going on. I just didn't know what it was. There were some wonderful moments in their childhoods that they would just blow me away and I'd be like, that's so awesome.

And there were other moments that were quite frightening as well.” - Anne

Memorable Quote

“So, the psychologist has just told you your child is gifted. Breathe, take a few deep breaths…

You know that it's actually because your child's brain is wired differently. And that encompasses not just a high IQ, but also these intense emotions and physical sensitivities that need to be taken into account as you parent, and as your child goes through school.

You know that it's okay to grieve and feel any of those big emotions that you have and that you need to find your people.

That's the beginning.” – Sophia Elliott

Memorable Quote

“He's got his sense of how he wants to be perceived, how he wants to please his teachers, how he wants to please himself. He wants to get things right in school, and so he's judging himself, even if nobody else is, our gifted kids tend to do that. The more gifted they are, all these factors seem to be a little more extreme.” – Teresa Currivan

Bio

Teresa Currivan is a licensed marriage and family therapist, parent coach and school therapist for the San Francisco Unified School district. She consults and speaks to faculty at schools in the San Francisco Bay Area about twice-exceptionality and differently wired learners.

She received her MA in Counselling Psychology using Drama Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and completed post-graduate training at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley, CA. She has used drama therapy with young children and talk therapy with parents and other caregivers in the community health setting.

Years ago, her own child was having difficulty in school both socially and academically. She became frustrated trying to figure out how to navigate the world of professionals and educators and was unable to find one person or place who could put all of the moving parts together.

Through her experience helping differently wired children over the years, she has learned that each differently tuned-in child comes with strengths and challenges in unique combinations. Out of this, she developed the Currivan Protocol™. It is a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan that identifies what can be treated, accepts challenges, and embraces strengths.

The Currivan Protocol™ Assessment Tool has been adapted for implementation in the public and private school settings.

Memorable Quote

“And I think probably the most important point to reiterate right now is that is really bloody hard. Like there is nothing easy about honouring a meltdown or an angry outburst. There is nothing easy about us staying regulated and consciously in control enough to then come in and not start to discipline. It's so hard for us to come in with love.” – Allison Davies

Working within a neurodiversity framework that favours regulation over intervention, and sharing her lived experience of autism, Allison empowers others to use music as a tool for neuro-regulation at home and in the classroom. Her programs, workshops and speaking events have received international acclaim for their ability to enthral an audience, deliver lightbulb moments and shift paradigms away from behavioural management and towards brain care.

Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Teaching and a Master of Music Therapy and training with the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy.

From 2005 – 2020 she worked in private music therapy practice across the fields of early childhood, juvenile detention, adult mental health, aged care, dementia care, palliative care and neuro rehabilitation.

#049 Why We Need to Talk About Women25 Mar 202201:07:35

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week next week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

In the episode, we talk about why we need to talk about women and neurodiversity.

We get into autism, ADHD, giftedness, girls, women, lived experience, and a bunch of research.

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quotes

‘Almost none of the research on giftedness beginning with the very first study of Tarmin starts with an IQ test of an entire population. It starts with teachers picking out who to test.

That means almost every test out there on giftedness, and how awesome it is, starts with eliminating the majority of children who are disadvantaged. They're poor. They're a member of a minority group. They don't speak the same languages as their teachers or they're disabled.’  – Kathleen Humble

‘So I started researching for my kids. The best way I can describe it was I had a very emotional response to doing that research. I couldn't quite rationalize in my head at that point, that that emotional response might be because I am autistic because at that point I couldn't rationalize or understand how I might be autistic.

And it took a lot more digging and understanding to understand how autism kind of manifests and expresses particularly in adult women and girls. And to find things that resonated with me.’Sophia Elliott

#048 Why You Need Dabrowski w/ Dr Chris Wells & Emma Nicholson23 Mar 202201:02:59

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week next week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

Today we talk Dr Christiane Wells and Emma Nicholson, hosts of The Positive Disintegration Podcast to unpack why you need Dabrowski!

We answer – are Overexcitabilities still relevant? What is positive disintegration? What is The Theory of Positive Disintegration? What impact can all this have on the neurodivergent & gifted community?

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quotes

“So it's been eight years and I can tell you that now, I no longer think of myself as gifted and mentally ill. I see myself from a whole different framework that has, like I said, changed my life, thanks to Dabrowski because I realized that the difficult times I had when I was younger, were not signs of mental illness so much as struggles that I have reframed as periods of positive disintegration.” – Christiane Wells

“I accidentally fell into a dark night of the soul and this life-changing moment and... I went to Google for answers and typed in something like  why does my brain feel like it's falling apart and stumbled upon positive disintegration quite by accident, and overexcitabilities. I broke down in tears, finding the answer to who I was finally after all this time. And I understood why I had been the way I was as a child and why basically  struggled to adult successfully as I put it.” – Emma Nicholson

#047 Understanding Your Rainforest Mind with Paula Prober22 Mar 202200:57:50

#047 Understanding Your Rainforest Mind with Paula Prober

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week next week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

In the episode, we talk to the wonderful Paula Prober and seek to understand ourselves through her analogy of the Rainforest Mind; a subset of the gifted community that is especially creative.

We dive into what is a rainforest mind? What is a multipotentialite?

And why it’s important to work on yourself, especially if you’re a parent.

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

“The key thing, I think, is to recognize that you have a right to take care of yourself and it's a big gift that you give your kids because you heal whatever wounding you have, you understand yourself and you're more apt to understand your kids.” – Paula Prober

“One of the traits of the rainforest minded person, which is someone who is interested in everything, is they want to do everything, but it's so hard to… settle into a certain career path because they feel like they have to give up all these other ones to do this one.

So then I talk to them about - you don't have to do the same thing. Once you decide to do this one thing, you don't have to do that for the rest of your life. You can do it for a while and then go to the next thing. And the next thing. I have a client who stays in a job maybe for two years, and then she's ready to go to something else and not everybody can do that, but the multipotentialite gifted person is highly creative and, and so they have so many interests and ability, so many things that they are capable of doing.

So how do you decide, how do you choose?... So that's where I come in. I help normalize that in a way, right?” – Paula Prober

Resources

Bio – Paula Prober

Paula Prober is a licensed psychotherapist and consultant in private practice in Eugene, Oregon, USA. She specializes in counselling gifted adults and youth (in the state of Oregon) and consults with parents of gifted children and with gifted adults internationally.

#046 The Long Road with Nadja Cereghetti21 Mar 202200:51:59

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

Today I’m speaking with Nadja Cereghetti, host of Unleash Monday podcast, about her journey over the last year. She too has been investigating her neurodivergence and it hasn’t all been roses.

Hear about her journey of exploring ADHD and giftedness and tune in to her podcasts and community!

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

“And that's, I think the most important thing, you don't need to prove to anybody you're gifted.

Like you don't need an IQ score to be part of this community and to learn and to take the things that work for you.” – Nadja Cereghetti

“I looked at myself and more in a negative light...  I was really good at school... Why am I struggling? … Why can I not just be like others? I knew there was some kind of discrepancy, but I always thought of myself as less than, or it's my fault. It's my personality traits. Something I need to change. I need to adapt. And, that was also the narrative, like all my life.

Even though I was in the beginning, like primary school, I was really good and I really wanted to learn, I even had this drive to learn, to read and write. Before going to school and asking my mom like to teach me. And she's like, no, no, no, you're going to be bored at school. So she didn't teach me, but I really had this drive to learn. But then once I was in school, actually the teachers didn't like me so much because I was questioning the teachers and ask them any questions…

I was always scolded and I spent like half of my time at school, in front of the door. That's how you get punished here in Switzerland. If you talk, you get sent in front of the door and you spent the rest of the lesson, by yourself in the hallway. So that's where I spend a lot time.

And so constantly there was this negative feedback that I got about my personality. Like, hold back, be more quiet, sit still. And I always thought, yeah, it's me. I need to change. I need to adapt.” – Nadja Cereghetti

Resources

Bio – Nadja Cereghetti

I am a Multipotentialite with a great passion for Science and the Marie Kondo Method. Learning new things and talking to people is what I love. I want to share these great stories with the world.

Recently, I stumbled across the topic of unidentified gifted adults and it changed everything! And now it's time to talk about it!

Have you been called „too much“, „too intense“ „too sensitive“?

Do you just hate inequality? Do you suffer from imposter syndrome?

Do you have difficulties finding your career path because you are a multi potential person who has a 1000 ideas and 500 projects... all at the same time?

Do you have a weird evolved sense of humour?

Do you suffer from dyslexia but are fast at grasping new concepts?

Do you have a hard time fitting in and sometime feel like a minority of one?

Then this show is for you! Unleash Monday!

#045 Unpacking The Journey with Jennifer Harvey Sallin20 Mar 202201:11:04

#045 Unpacking My Journey with Jennifer Harvey Sallin

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

In this episode, I share my own personal journey of figuring out I am gifted + autistic with Jennifer Harvey Sallin, Founder of Intergifted. She helps me unpack that experience and shares how that has aligned with the many people she has helped through this process over the years.

Heaps of insight and reassurance and great resources.

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

“It's part of my way of working. It's just, sharing very personal stories so that people understand what people are really going through and  can see real stories. I mean, I think that having some sort of 'eldership' in terms of the gifted and neurodivergent world is really essential. People who have had more experience, being able to talk about their experiences.

It's so much more relatable than seeing IQ numbers on a board or whatever. Like, we need that. We need that storytelling, and we need that connection.” – Jennifer Harvey Sallin

As a psychologist, trainer, assessor, writer and advocate, Jen is dedicated to raising awareness about adult giftedness and twice-/multi-exceptionality (2e/me) and meaningfully supporting gifted/2e/me people in their personal and social development. She has specialized in supporting gifted adults for the last decade, and in 2015, she created InterGifted to allow gifted people to socially engage in meaningful ways and to personally develop in community. She is based in Switzerland and supports gifted people throughout the world. Learn more about why Jen started InterGifted here.

Jen has developed a model of giftedness that is particularly useful for gifted adults in their giftedness (re)discovery, integration and personal and professional development. This model is holistic, starting with intellectual giftedness as a base, and factoring in other areas of intelligence as well as other concurrent neurodivergences and intersectionalities to create a full picture of each person's giftedness profile. She uses this model in providing qualitative assessments to gifted adults, as well as in training professional therapists, coaches and other helping professionals to better support their gifted clients.

Jen wants to help gifted and 2e/me people understand how their unique minds work, so that they can have joyful and self-compassionate access to their own intellectual process, and so that they can live and contribute generatively in our changing world. She's worked her own way through this process as well -- you can read a bit about her personal gifted journey here and for a more complete bio, visit her personal page at Rediscovering Yourself.

To read more from Jen, visit InterGifted's blog and her own Rediscovering Yourself blog. In addition to her work on giftedness, Jen has taken a leadership role in conscious climate engagement and ecological reconnection. You can learn more & get involved at I Heart Earth.

#044 Unpacking Neurodiversity17 Mar 202200:33:41

Unpacking Neurodiversity

It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week next week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult.

In this episode we start by asking what is neurodiversity and neurodivergence? and why is it worth exploring our own neurodivergence as an adult?

What do we have to gain by getting a label at this stage of our life?

Find out as Sophia shares her insights after getting a few labels of her own.

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

“There's good reason to go on this journey and you might think, well, what's a label going to get me but it's not about the label. It's about the understanding that comes with that.

It's about getting that confirmation and validation. It's about what comes with that knowledge. The label is just a shortcut to articulating a bigger picture, because once you understand the bigger picture, you have the opportunity then to look back at your life and understand it.” – Sophia Elliott

“I can't tell you how many memories I have where I can now look back and go, aahhhh, okay. Now it's making sense.

There's a huge amount of relief in that, probably quite a lot of different emotions, but aside from just the comfort from looking back and understanding and feeling like you have an answer for the challenges that you've had, it's actually about looking at yourself now and saying, well, with this new knowledge, how can I make life easier for myself? It doesn't have to be that hard.” – Sophia Elliott

#087 Unpacking dangerous myths about gifted & 2E boys w/ Deborah Gennarelli30 Sep 202301:10:26

#087 Unpacking dangerous myths about gifted & 2E boys w/ Deborah Gennarelli

In this episode, we’re talking to Deborah Gennarelli about gifted and twice exceptional (2E) boys. A great episode unpacking those dangerous myths about gifted boys, diving into what makes them different, and providing real hands-on strategies to walk away with.

Memorable quote… “

“I've particularly noticed, with the boys that I worked with, the emotional intensity. So these students think and feel deeply and often differently than other children. This is especially true for 2E boys who are wrestling with the fact that they're gifted, but they also feel inadequate or shame or other negative emotions. And I saw that with all the boys that I wrote about. They knew they were really smart, but then they started questioning, "Am I really smart?” - Deborah Gennarelli

Bio…

An experienced educator and gifted intervention specialist, Deborah Gennarelli has a master's degree in gifted education and her passion has been recognised by Teacher of the Year awards in three different school districts as well as an “All-County Teacher” award.

As a gifted intervention specialist, she developed gifted education programs in several districts and now also consults; providing professional development on topics relevant to gifted children and supporting parents and students. A national speaker on the identification and support of gifted and 2e children, Deborah has also written the newly released, ‘Twice Exceptional Boys: A Roadmap to Getting it Right’.

She is currently co-writing a second book about neurodiversity in adults and is a member of NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children), OAGC (Ohio Association for Gifted Children, and SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted).

#042 How can a Neuropsychologist help my gifted child? with Dr Marnie Cumner17 Feb 202200:40:12

#042 How can a Neuropsychologist help my gifted child? With Dr Marnie Cumner

What is a neuropsychologist and how can they help my gifted child? We talk to Dr Marnie Cumner about neuropsychology and dive into how a neuropsychologist undertakes a holistic assessment of a child. In this episode, she talks about her strengths-based model of understanding both strengths and challenges and the whole child. These niche psychologists approach assessment differently and it is great to learn more about this process and how they might help a family looking for answers.

We’re hugely grateful for Dr Marnie Cumner for taking the time to introduce neuropsychologists!

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

“I think what's useful with doing an assessment of the child's strengths and challenges is what you said there about the building the bridges of that connection and understanding and empathy for parents because often parents are feeling really frustrated by certain behaviours or by certain little idiosyncrasies.

And it's so powerful to be able to say. Actually, this is not mischief or maliciousness or being naughty, or they need to pull up their socks. It's none of that. There's a genuine difficulty with XYZ and that's why this is coming out in this behaviour. And I can see that parents sometimes just need to have that context to go ah, right, okay.

And a few parents have said to me in the past that they feel like they can be impacted with their child's experience in that moment, knowing that they're not just doing it, they actually are really overwhelmed and struggling with whatever that might be.” – Dr Marnie Cumner

Resources

#041 Perfectionism, Diagnosis and her New Book with Emily Kircher-Morris03 Feb 202200:37:59

#041 Perfectionism, Diagnosis and her New Book with Emily Kircher-Morris

Today we talk to Emily Kircher-Morris about perfectionism, getting diagnosed (and whether we tell our kids) and her recently published book, Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Todays’ Classroom.

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quotes

“To me, perfectionism is an anxiety based response to feeling as though there's an expectation that somebody is not going to live up to, but that can look like a lot of different things.“ – Emily Kircher-Morris

“[Perfectionism] doesn't always look like somebody who is an overachiever or somebody who is constantly, trying to get all straight A's. It can look like that, but it can also look like somebody who is avoidant, in their approach to tasks or somebody who really is just worried about how other people perceive them, and so then they try to mask or hide what might be perceived as deficits.” – Emily Kircher-Morris

“My thought is that a child can't self-advocate unless they know what's going on [being gifted/2E]… And I think what we're really doing [when we don’t tell them] is we're sending the message that it's something to be ashamed of… [when] It's not better than, or less than, it's just different.” – Emily Kircher-Morris

Bio

#039 Who else is a burnt-out parent of a gifted kid?16 Jan 202200:19:36

In our first podcast for 2022 I’m getting real about how hard it is to parent gifted kids and the total burnout I experienced in 2021 – and I’m not alone!

So we’re talking about what burnout looks like, why parenting gifted kids is harder and messes with our health (if we let it!) and what we can do about it!

Hit play and let’s get started!

Memorable Quote

"I’ve always maintained that parenting is hard – full stop. It doesn’t matter who you are or who your kids are, it’s just hard. And it is. But recently, [I've realised] that most parents and families have a few years of very intense parenting before things start to level out and become easier… but parenting high-needs kids isn’t like that..." – Sophia Elliott

“It’s the hours spent supporting them through meltdowns. The hours spent as they process their day and try to fall asleep. It’s the energy put into creating a dinner that meets their sensory requirements. It’s meeting their sensory requirements.

It’s the hours figuring out what is going on, years on waitlists, assessments, reports, dead ends, answers. It’s the hours going to therapy…

It’s the hours thinking about how to meet their needs, finding professional support, taking them, paying, putting it into practice. Finding the right school. Advocating at that school. Supporting their cognitive needs.

Then cooking dinner.” – Sophia Elliott

"It’s not like I’m doing something wrong, it’s just a super-human effort to last this long and I’m all out of super-human." – Sophia Elliott
