We talk about the first season of Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and answer a few 3rd year anniversary e-mails that we didn't get around to in the original anniversary episode. Thank you for listening! Please consider giving us five stars! It helps spread us around and we'd really appreciate it!

We're going to the other side of anime consumption this week with Mattie's bottom 30 anime of all time! Filled with what could only be considered crap-ssic anime, this is basically a handy guide of anime to avoid at least according to one host of this show! Again, this list is all in good fun so if your favorite show is on this list then it's not an attack on you. Probably. Let us know your least favorite anime of all time in the comments below or join our Discord and talk with us! We'd love to hear from you.

Feel free to give us five stars on whatever platform you're listening to this on so people know we're not the worst! Thank you for listening!

Skinamarink! It's more than just a magic spell to carve off the skin of your enemies! It's also an experimental 2022 horror film written and directed by Kyle Edward Ball which Audrey and our featured guest Earthworm review and discuss this week! While Mattie soaks up the sun, the gang here bask in the fun of childhood horror and, quite unfortunately, knives. It's not anime but these things are known to happen from time to time.

I hope you're jazzed about jazz because in this episode we discussing 2023's Blue Giant! Expect talks about how neat the saxophone is so if you're just like, I don't know, really not a fan of the woodwind section of your high school band then maybe you shouldn't listen to this episode. Did you know that the saxophone was invented by a man named Adolphe Sax? Sounds super fake but is actually super true!

We're going to magic school again (gosh we just keep flunking magic school) in this episode with a discussion and review of Witch Hat Atelier! We're talking wholesome helpings of witchy wonders and more including topical topics like how hot yet adorable Qifrey is. There's also like twenty seconds of discussion on the history of old drive in Alabama so tune in if you're like a historian or something. I'm not telling you where it is though so you have to listen to the whole episode. Historians don't get a free ride on this podcast. Now economists though...

Sonic the Hedgehog! He's 35 years old now so you know his knee joints just aren't going to be what they used to be but we still love him. We love him so much that we wanted to talk a little bit about him and his first foray into anime with the 1996 OVA named Sonic the Hedgehog! We review and discuss all the fun of the short but sweet two episode OVA as well as our long history with the blue blur from recording "Live and Learn" on our old CRTs to playing Sonic 3 at our best friend from elementary school's house. Listen in and share your Sonic stories in the comments below or on our social media! We'd love to hear from you!

This episode was originally recorded in April 2025 for the Anime Brothers Podcast. Any misinformed statements in this episode based off future events is not due to willful stupidity and/or blatant ignorance. For once.

We talk about what it would be like to have 100 girlfriends in an episode that could only be described as content! It's like waifu wars on a world war scale. Wait, there's only like 11 girlfriends in these first two seasons? That seems kind of like some false marketing.

Firstly, Audrey's audio is subpar because of technical issues. Secondly, we have a guest this week so everyone act on your best behavior. Lastly, how are your grades looking like? You're grounded if you didn't get at least all B's. I'm a strict parent, I think.

We cap off Anno Live Action Whatever I Don't Know Month with Shin Kamen Rider! Is it good? We talk about that! Is it bad? We also talk about that! What is a bug? That is also a subject we break down with our good friend who came out of retirement, Earthworm! Listen now! If you want! I'm not forcing you.

https://linktr.ee/otakumelancholypodcast

Big shiny dudes fighting for humanity! It's a tale as old as time and it's being retold again this week with our review and discussion on Shin Ultraman! We're exploring the live action films of Hideaki Anno this month so obviously here's your Shin Ultraman episode. Anno didn't have a seat in the director's chair for this one but he still wrote and produced this! Does it show? We talk some of that and more!

https://linktr.ee/otakumelancholypodcast

Well, I mean, we're not called ANIME MELANCHOLY so I guess we can be kaiju or tokusatsu otaku or whatever. We're discussing the live action works of acclaimed (and deadline missing) director, Hideaki Anno! While known and generally beloved for the Evangelion series, Anno also directed a trio of films that reimagined three of Japan's most beloved properties and this week we're covering SHIN GODZILLA! It's hot kaiju on human action as we talk politics in big monster movies, the moisture in the wind in the southeastern United State, and even more topics that will be sure to be a distraction while you're at work! Ganbatte!

https://linktr.ee/otakumelancholypodcast

Love! It's in the air! Get a better air filter to prevent love from getting into your lungs, people! We didn't do that in this episode because we absolutely breathed in deep the fumes of romance with a discussion on You and I Are Polar Opposites! In a winter season full of absolute hype machine anime, Journal with Witch was a show that tackled the complicated dynamics of people especially as they live in the wake of grief. That show is obviously going to be Journal with Witch since that's the name of this episode and all but I don't know how adept some of you are at reading. I've been using these show notes as my own personal memo pad for disrupting thoughts and no one has ever said anything during the first four years of OtaMel so why should I face consequences now? Also Makio is best girl I would absolutely let her leave me on read. Ganbatte!

We're talking all about some vampire night this episode (and not like the anime Vampire Knight or anything, I'm so funny) as we discuss the first season of Call of the Night! It's all about vibes, relationship turmoil, and the council of hot vampire MILFs in your area! You don't even have to stay up late to watch this episode! Or maybe you do. It's like 8pm CST when I'm uploading it. 8pm is pretty late isn't it, fellow kids?

We continue our dive into the Umamusume franchise with a review and discussion of seasons two and three of Umamusume Pretty Derby in this episode! (Due to the nature of this anime, there is no spoiler safe section. You've been warned!)

In this week's OtaMel, we take off and go full boomer mode as we fail to discuss anything except how great the ol' days were, MyAnimeList vs. AniList, and video game culture. We also rag a little bit on the writer of one New York Times article but it's all in (mostly) good fun. This review is us vs. the world and then us vs. the universe in our finest hour after we get it together with our infinite sadness with what few moments with have with our precious little life. These are all titles of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and I know that you're very impressed I used them all in one cringe inducing sentence. Anyways, Scott Pilgrim. Listen to it or whatever. Attack on Titan has finally ended which means that we are obligated by the spirit of vengeance that has unfortunately inhabited our bodies to talk about it. Is there that much to talk about though? The rumbling in our hearts have conscripted us to criticize these specials and criticize it we do (mostly just Eren and the ending really) so hopefully you'll listen! It's like the annual sportsball draft but with seasonal anime! In this week's episode, we read off a bunch of anime and their synopsis and then say "ay imma watch that" or "ay imma not watch that and pretend I did if anyone asks" for the sake of entertainment. Hopefully it's entertaining for you because then it's just going to be a whole lot of "oH i ReAd ThE LiGhT nOvEl oF tHaT" which is, frankly, not the best kind of podcast in the world but we have to make due with the cards we're dealt and I was dealt a hand of Yu-Gi-Oh cards when all I wanted to do was play Uno. In this week's episode, I talk about how hot Toji Fushiguro is. That's the entire episode. What does it mean to be a prequel? It means having established lore to follow and not being able to stray from it. It means you can't kill off anyone important so why even bother? Jujutsu Kaisen dared to bother by showing us Gojo's past and explore his relationship with his super best bud Geto and his slow evolution from cool guy to cool guy with a scar on his head who is also kind of racist. Or ability-ist? Jujutsu-ist? Something like that. With only five episodes to cover what could be essential world building, does it even hold up? We don't ask those questions and more all in one hour long handy dandy podcast episode that you should share with the people in your life who have scars on their foreheads! Mattie wasn't able to adequately produce an episode due to some mild health issues and a waning mood due to certain life events so here's a curated collection of colorfully crafted ending songs courtesy of the delightfully not real radio station: 103.3 The Weeb. We play a classic a game this week of "Would You Rather?" but with (ALMOST) exclusively anime related questions with JD from the Anime Brothers Podcast! It's an episode full of discussion on quality vs. quantity as it relates to anime, the value of your hobbies in your social life, and the sexual reproductive appendages of the majestic whale! It's mostly about that last topic though. Marine biology is just so cool, you know? A very special thank you to JD for answering the call and joining in on this episode! Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness month? I didn't for sure but maybe Alex from The AniBuddies Podcast did as they suggested this week's topic of mental health and illness and how it's portrayed in anime! It sounds a lot more insightful and intellectual than it actually is (I mean we're basically talking about cartoon character brains or whatever) but hopefully you'll have fun listening regardless! Remember to take care of your brain! You only get one! Unless you don't! Big shout out to Alex for joining in on this episode! Go check out their podcast in the links below! Like right now. Spoiler warnings are in the episode if you care about that sort of thing! The bonus content becomes the regular content this week as we break down Makoto Shinkai's latest film: Suzume! Is this new movie the film that will finally have the KEY to our host's heart or will it LOCK up any chances of our host caring about Shinkai? Is the main character aDOORable enough to be a perfect FRAME of reference for all future heroines in Shinkai's work? We're KNOB joking about how this film may or may not be unHINGEd and yeah yeah yeah door puns door puns I'm great I'm great roll up and see the circus because I'm a clown. We break down our thoughts and feelings in this week's episode!

In this episode, we get our goopy goblin gamer brains togethers as Earthworm from the Anime Brothers Podcast joins us to pick more anime characters for a huge hypothetical Smash Bros. style game! We choose our special attacks and even a couple of stages as we go from stands to seances deciding on a roster of characters from all across the anime spectrum. Listen in to find out if your favorite made the list and give us the characters you'd pick on our Discord or by sending an e-mail to otakumelancholypodcast@gmail.com or filling out a contact form on our website! We'd like to give a very huge thanks to Earthworm for taking the time out to hang out and giving us the best of his creativity! We're back to our seasonal shenanigans so it's time to strap yourselves in and make a long commitment to what anime you're (probably) going to watch during the course of the season! Spring 2023 is looking kind of thick so the plan was to just talk about and read off the descriptions of (almost) every anime and break down the absolute why and what of each show and how that's going to affect our lives for the foreseeable twelve week future! I know it's been a minute since we've given seasonal anime a fair chance but I swear that we're 200% serious this time and I absolutely will not drop every single show in a fit of manic depression and frustration. I super promise it. Let us know what you're excited for and what you plan to watch too! We've watched a lot of bad anime for this podcast and some of it, if you didn't know, has been misery inducing. So... here we are officially putting that in a tier list. Celebrities liking anime? It might be closer than you think. Michael B. Jordan talked about his top 5 anime for people who aren't into anime and since I've watched a Michael B. Jordan movie then that means he and I are practically business associates (I think that's how it works) so I also wanted to make my curated list of anime that might be great to give to someone who hasn't seen an anime before as his colleague. Your mileage will definitely vary on this list because I'm going to presume that if you're listening to this episode then you're probably familiar with anime but hey! Maybe use it to help with your friends? I don't have any friends who aren't already into anime so I can't test this out. Maybe I'll mind wipe a few but then they might now want to be my friend any more. The cost of science is too high and profits are too low. Maybe Michael B. Jordan might even use this list? He won't but hey! A man can dream... But usually those dreams just turn to nightmares huh? Thank you for supporting the Otaku Melancholy Podcast!

Video games! They're like anime except they're not like anime at all except for when they're entirely like anime or have anime influences or are based off anime or have anime in them. They're basically anime, yeah? As long as the human race has been on this Earth, we have sought out with great vigor to adapt video games to EVERYTHING for no reason. Like EVERYTHING. They tried to turn Sonic into a bath product. I know that's not an adaptation or anything but I'm going to count it anyways. So what video games do we think could make for good anime? That's what this episode is about and I hope you'll sit and enjoy it or work out and enjoy it or whatever. Just try to enjoy it however you can! Give us your ideas and thoughts too! After a year and some months, Yu Yu Hakusho has finally been completed! It took a lot of determination and fighting spirit but we fought against the tides of apathy, new anime, and just everything else to finish it and now there are some opinions to be had. It's mostly an opinion in the questionable ending and quality of the final saga or arc or whatever you want to call it but still an opinion and this is a podcast so I'll presume you want a little bit of an opinion. There's no real doubt to be had about the greatness of Yu Yu Hakusho but this final story? There's some greatness to be debated and debated it is in this very episode. We hope you'll listen and check it out and that we'll see you soon in the next week! Scheduling is hard. Audrey is out this week so it's another solo session as Matt talks about when anime series get movies because That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime got a movie and someone wasn't particularly thrilled about it. Join us as one person talks about watching anime movies on Adult Swim, driving to Ohio to watch the Naruto: The Last movie, and more! I'm trying my best, dad!
