| Matteo Violet-Vianello, founder of Anoma Watches | 16 Aug 2024 | 00:59:26 | |
In this episode, we chat with the man behind one of 2024’s most-discussed watch brands, Anoma. Matteo Violet-Vianello developed his love of free-form vintage watch aesthetics while working at A Collected Man, and decided he wanted to create his own watch. Despite having no formal design training, Anoma’s debut watch, the A1, is an assured and sophisticated design that tackles the seldom-seen triangular case. Matteo explains his design choices, the production process and the philosophical underpinnings of this exciting new brand. Before that, Andy and Felix try and get some watch ambassador deals for Olympians. Like watches? Join our Discord. Show Notes: https://www.otpodcast.com.au/show-notes

Andy runs us through the offerings of Chanel, Hermès and Van Cleef & Arpels, as well as dress, dive and sports options from IWC, Zenith and Chopard. Beyond that, Andy ventured outside the fair to check out Atelier Wen, and we chat about how the new Santos de Cartier Dual Time will be big in Australia. | Breitling’s CEO Georges Kern on the new Navitimer and the need to keep adapting | 31 Mar 2022 | 00:40:48
Earlier this week, Breitling took to the skies (literally) to relaunch the iconic Navitimer, a watch that, 70 years ago, defined the pilot’s watch with its functionality and purpose. Today though, we chat to the man who masterminded the relaunch, Breitling CEO Georges Kern. Kern has, throughout his long career in the watch business, been a dynamic leader with a strong vision of what a successful watch brand looks like. Felix finds out how in a few short years, he’s steered the brand into its most authentic expression yet, and how the Navitimer has maintained its relevance in an era of ubiquitous technology. On top of that, we get Mr Kern’s take on the state of supply, demand and the watch market. Before that though, Andy and Felix chat about MoonSwatch drama, Tiffany’s questionable NFTs and what it’s like on the ground in Geneva. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. Head into your local boutique to check out the new Navitimer, or head to breitling.com and buy it online. Oh, and Felix is also (still) in love with his Artem Strap — check them out here. | Michelle Ciesielski (Knight Frank) on investments of passion, plus bad vegans and Hodinkee's new CEO | 24 Mar 2022 | 00:42:33
Today we chat with Michelle Ciesielski, Head of Residential Research at Knight Frank Australia, about their annual wealth report, which gives us a detailed overview of what Australia's 20k or so ultra-high net worth individuals spend their coin on. Turns out they're spending it on watches, whiskey and other investments of passion more than ever before, and Michelle tells us the investment is paying off. On top of that, there's change at the top of watch media's 10,000-pound gorilla, as Hodinkee announces a new CEO and OT's very own good vegan Andy give us straight sauce on some bad vegans. This episode is sponsored by Edifice Watches. This week Andy and Felix chat about the versatile EFV140D-3A. Check it out here. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! | Lydia Winters and Vu Bui on Youtube, photography and why the Pelagos FXD might be the perfect watch | 17 Mar 2022 | 01:23:50
Double trouble this week with the horological/photographic power couple that is Lydia Winters and Vu Bui. With a shared love of watches, photography and videography, it was only a matter of time before these passions combined into a YouTube channel, called (appropriately enough) Winters & Bui. We talk about their plans for the channel, the importance of authenticity and why quality content will always shine through. Naturally, we get some practical photography tips and find out about Lydia’s love of Hasselblad. And while the shared couples watch might be the dream for many people, it isn’t something that works for Vu and Lydia, so we get their take on inter-relationship watch trading and what it’s like to actually wear (and scratch) a hype watch. But before all that, Felix and Andy talk about how Wordle can save the internet and why we need to stop comparing new releases (hello Omega!) to Rolex. | Steve Corica (Sydney FC) plus why we need to stop spotting watches, and redemption for Franck Muller | 10 Mar 2022 | 00:41:18
Today we chat with veteran footballer and Head coach of Sydney FC, Steve Corica. We chat to Steve about the changing profile of football in Australia, what it's like to make the move from player to coach and how technology and science are changing the game. And given that Edifice is a fresh team sponsor, we chat about the importance of timing and the culture of footballers' watches. In other news, Andy must have been enjoying a spice-heavy diet recently, as he's full of hot takes. First up, he makes some strong arguments as to why watch spotting is played out and needs to fade away. From then on, we ponder just what it would take for Franck Muller to return to its early noughties glory (Felix is sceptical). | Tennis Pro Matt Ebden on the Aus Open and Bremont, plus Jean-Claude Biver is making his own watches | 17 Feb 2022 | 00:52:51
Game, set and Matt. Today’s guest is Matt Ebden, one of Australia’s best tennis pros, and we speak to him fresh from the 2022 Australian Open, where he and Max Purcell made it to the men’s doubles final. Beyond his obvious on-court skills, anyone checking out Ebden’s Instagram will notice he’s a pretty keen watch enthusiast as well, so it’s no surprise that he’s got Bremont on board as a sponsor. We chat about the many links between pro athletes and fine timepieces, brand endorsements and connected watches on the court. Before they chat to Matt, Andy and Felix ponder what a watch with Jean-Claude Biver’s name on the dial would look like. Images: Australian Open This week’s episode is sponsored by Artem Straps. | February News – Ed Sheeran opens up, plus corporate shenanigans from Patek Philippe, LVMH and Audemars Piguet | 03 Feb 2022 | 00:46:23
No time for guests when we've got so much hard-hitting watch news to digest. First of all, two titans in their respective fields square off: it's Ed Sheeran V Ben Clymer in 50 minutes of civilised watch chat. Then we escalate into the world of bright blue watches, with Zachary Lu being revealed as the (eventual) buyer of the first Tiffany blue Nautilus auctioned off by Phillips for a cool $6 million. | James McVey (The Vamps) on getting married in a castle and finding grails | 27 Jan 2022 | 01:09:38
A lot has changed for The Vamps guitarist James McVey since we chatted to him in 2020. He’s managed to get married, and we get to hear the finer details of wedding watches, cars and castles. On top of that, McVey has fallen deeper down the rabbit-hole of watches, discovering microbrands, G-shock and Bremont. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also managed to track down his grail Rolex — and is getting ready to wear it all over the world. | Joshua Shapiro (J.N. Shapiro) on engine turning and the pursuit of perfection | 20 Jan 2022 | 00:56:29
Think about high-end guilloché and chances are, you think about a chalet-like Maison somewhere in the snowy Swiss hills. The urban sprawl of Los Angeles, California — not so much. Nonetheless, this is where some of the finest engine turning in the world is being created right now — thanks to Joshua Shapiro. We chat with Shapiro about the fine art of engine turning, and what it’s like to invent your own unique guilloché pattern. Shapiro talks about what drives his watchmaking and why — even if perfection isn’t humanly possible — it’s still worth pursuing. We cover off collaboration, and Shapiro teases some details about the possibility of a Californian-made Shapiro Movement. | Looking back at Greg Yuna, on to Drake, ruining watches and setting trends | 13 Jan 2022 | 00:40:13
This week we immerse ourselves for an hour in the world of one of the world’s hottest (and hardest working) custom jewellers. A lot’s changed since we originally chatted to Greg Yuna in mid-2020, but he’s still out there, messing up factory watches and making them cooler in the process. Not too long into our interview with iconic NYC jeweller Greg Yuna, he asks to speak freely. "I like fucking the watches up. I like ruining them." Of course, he's doing nothing of the sort — his stone setting of Patek, AP and Rolex is up there with the best (he's called The Cleanest for a reason). While some purists might argue that this sort of custom work is sacrilegious, Yuna has a long list of clients, including Drake, Meek Mill, Floyd Mayweather and Ariana Grande who would argue the opposite. But Yuna's work ethic is as flawless as his stones — the man does not stop and is always onto the next thing, be that a stone dialled Rolex Day-Date, consulting on and appearing Adam Sandler's Uncut Gems, launching a new line of jewellery or helping sell the Jacob & Co 'Billionaire' watch. Do not miss this. You'll laugh, you'll learn, you'll be inspired. This week’s episode is sponsored by Artem Straps. Check out their sailcloth straps here. | Looking back at James Cox, the man who sold Paul Newman’s Daytona | 06 Jan 2022 | 01:21:53
This week we look back at one of our (especially Andy’s) all-time favourite episodes; our chat with James Cox, the man who sold Paul Newman’s Paul Newman … On the 26th of October, 2017, after 12 minutes of bidding, a Rolex Daytona reference 6239 that belonged to legendary actor Paul Newman was sold for $17,752,500 USD (including premiums). It’s widely regarded as the most significant watch auction to date, not just for the hammer price achieved, but for the significance of the watch. In the room was James Cox, who, for decades, wore that watch on his wrist. That was nearly three years ago now, so we thought it was high time to catch up with James and revisit the story of ‘Paul Newman’s Paul Newman’, how it ended up on James’ wrist. We talk about what he’s done with the millions of dollars (hint: making the world a better place), why even he can’t get a new Daytona at retail, and what watch has replaced the most famous Rolex in the world. | Miles Fisher on AP, life as deepfake Tom Cruise and 2021 | 30 Dec 2021 | 01:22:56
For our last episode of 2021, we catch up with a certified viral sensation and verified nice guy, Miles Fisher. We speak to Miles about how he’s been spending 2021, including trips to Dubai with Audemars Piguet with a side serving of Dubai Watch Week, and his rigorous collecting philosophy. But even if you don’t follow Miles for his snappy watch collection or coffee-related content, you’ve seen his work. Because Miles also has a double life as the man behind deepfake Tom Cruise, a parody account that’s scarily good. We chat to Miles about how some funny Tom Cruise election videos turned into exploring bleeding-edge technology with incredible possibilities and serious ethical issues. | Cara Barrett (Parchie) on launching a kid’s watch brand and why AP is getting size right | 23 Dec 2021 | 00:56:58
Cara Barrett’s back, and now she’s at the helm of one of the coolest kid’s watch brands on the block, Parchie. Learn about the nuance of velcro straps and how life in the watch media prepared Cara for building a brand. | Lung Lung Thun and Daniel Sum (The Waiting List) on that Tiffany Patek, dealing with fame and watches in China | 16 Dec 2021 | 01:05:34
In an OT: first, this episode features the guests outnumbering the hosts. Lung Lung Thun and Daniel Sum from The Waiting List podcast spend some time chatting to Felix about their thoughts on the hypiest of hype watches, the Tifanny-dialled Patek Philippe 5711 and quickly make it very clear that they are never getting one. But beyond this level of hot-take hijinks, we find out how Lung Lung deals with being low-key famous and get some fascinating insight into the reality and evolution of luxury watch brands and Chinese consumers. We also chat old Movado, what it’s like to temporarily lose access to your collection and why Dan’s a Reverso man. Of course, before the interview, Andy and Felix debrief on their debut collab, the anOrdain Model 2 OT: Edition, which came and went in less than 24 hours. | anOrdain x OT Limited Edition Watch | 08 Dec 2021 | 00:55:59
Hold onto your hats because OT: The Podcast has teamed up with everyone's favourite Glaswegian watchmaker, anOrdain, to make not one but two limited edition watches. Top line, the watch is a 39.5mm version of anOrdain's field watch-inspired model 2, with a stunning vitreous enamel dial in off-white or pink, and a distinctive 3,6,9 layout. But to understand the watch, you need to understand anOrdain. This is where Lewis comes in. He talks about the genesis of the anOrdain in 2015, when he posted an ad for an enameler at the local arts college and went about learning the tricky art of enamel watch dials. We find out how design innovation can be the result of happy accidents and find out just what goes into a successful collaboration. We also find out what his favourite part of the new watch is (spoiler — it's the hands) and what he enjoyed most about working with Andy and Felix. But back to the watch. Aside from the obvious details like the dial design and the larger case size, there are smaller touches to appreciate, too — like the seconds hand and track, as well as a caseback with an engraved map of Melbourne, Australia. The OT: Edition is a great example of the 'old crafts new hands' motto of anOrdain, pairing the traditional characteristics of an outdoors watch and anOrdain's expertise and unique typography with a lively colour palette perfectly in line with modern tastes. | December’s hottest news and even hotter takes | 02 Dec 2021 | 00:50:46
A few months ago we ran an episode of hot takes, where we dialled up the spice with some controversial content from Discord and out very own heads. Well, we’re back at with round two. From bezels to watches as cosplay and even Felix throwing shade at the mighty MAD watch, we hold nothing back. Even before the user-generated content gets hot, we’ve got plenty to talk about, from more Aussie boutiques, a unique Big Pilot for Kennedy, a cheery Minions watch plus Nicholas Cage and his pig. This episode is brought to you by NOMOS Glashütte. Today Felix and Andy indulge in some hypothetical watch shopping, and chat about the new Orion in gold and silver. Find out more here. | Alan Bedwell (Foundwell) on Cartier, clocks and why connoisseurship matters | 25 Nov 2021 | 01:11:21
Today’s guest is Alan Bedwell, the antiques expert behind cool curio site Foundwell. We chat to Alan about what it’s like growing up in an antique-dealing family and how he ended up looking after Ralph Lauren’s antiques, including dog paraphernalia, of all things. From there, Foundwell was formed through a stint at Bergdorf Goodman, and Alan was off to the races. We find out how the scene has changed over the years (hint, cufflinks aren’t cool right now), as well as his thoughts on why the watch market is white-hot. We also stray into watch-adjacent territory, talking about why clocks, even those from makers like Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre, are under-rated. Before Alan joined the chat, Andy and Felix found the time to talk luxury toaster smartphones, retro-futuristic cars and why Nomos nails watch accessories. This episode is brought to you by NOMOS Glashütte. Today we talk accessories and extras perfect for Christmas. From straps to postage stamps, you can always find something fun at NOMOS. Today we talk to James Lamb, a British independent watchmaker who has taken a decidedly (and deliberately) old-school approach to his debut Origin series. While it's easy to be wowed by the four enamel dials (each inspired by one of the four elements), take a minute to appreciate the amount of skill and care that goes into handcrafting each case from a bar of Argentium silver — from the lathe-work to the soldering and the final polishing, all of it is 100 per cent Lamb. Beyond the watch itself, we find out how Lamb went about creating his watch and went against the grain of feeling the need to polish every screw and bridge, instead focusing his skill and effort on the details that really make his watches stand out. Before all that, Andy and Felix accidentally chat about a bunch of blue watches from Blancpain, Tudor and Nomos. This episode is brought to you by NOMOS Glashütte. Today we chat about the Nomos Club Sport neomatik 42 date blue, an all-terrain Club on a brand new bracelet. Check it out here. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! | Andy and Felix on auction season – Only Watch, Pink Dial and one very expensive Omega | 11 Nov 2021 | 00:36:09
It’s that time of the year when everyone starts talking about lots, hammer prices and buyers premiums — yep, Auction season. Many of the major houses all hold significant auctions in Geneva, along with some more special events. One such, being the Pink Dial Project, a charity auction put together by Revolution and supported by other media platforms and held on Eric Ku’s Loupe This platform. We chat about the $500k plus result and the surprising watch that pulled in $172K. We also catch up on the results of the star-studded Only Watch, another charity auction of unique pieces that saw five lots hammer in for more than one million francs, with the whole auction raising $32.1 USD. Then there are the less charitable lots, like a significant Dufour, and an early Omega that achieved an eye-watering record price. All this and more (G-Shock, sailcloth straps and GPHG analysis) in this week’s episode. This episode is brought to you by G-Shock Australia. Tune in to Andy chatting up the vivid red GM2100B-4A, and why it reminds him of that classic RTS game, Command & Conquer. Today we chat to Sarah Hirini, the two-time Olympic gold medal-winning captain of New Zealand’s women’s national rugby team, the Black Ferns. And as if that wasn’t enough, she’s also a Tudor ambassador, which puts her alongside Lady Gaga as one of the brand’s few female ambassadors. We talk to Sarah about what it’s like to represent NZ in the Olympics, how she channels Tudor’s born to dare attitude, and why women’s rugby and professional women’s sports generally are finally getting the attention they deserve. We also find out how she’s liking the Black Bay 925 on the wrist. Andy and Felix also talk about rich kids, spies and metal G-Shocks. This episode is brought to you by G-Shock Australia. | MC Bliss (Bliss n Eso) on Aussie Hip Hop, G-Shock and Eminem | 28 Oct 2021 | 00:40:09
Today we chat to one of the founding fathers of Aussie hip hop, the mighty MC Bliss (also known as Jonathan Notley) from Bliss n Eso. We talk about the origins of Bliss n Eso, their latest album The Sun and what makes Aussie hip hop unique, and how it’s evolving. Of course, we talk about the special relationship hip hop has to watches, and how G-Shock has remained relevant in a genre known for its love of flex. On the topic of G-Shock Bliss talks about some iconic Eminem moments and what it was like to do the first Aussie collaboration with the super-tough Japanese brand. Finally, we find out Bliss’s surprising connection to hit drama Succession, and Felix and Andy get a little spooky with some Halloween suggestions. | BONUS EPISODE – Andy and Felix on Cartier's 2021 highlights and the legacy of the Tank | 27 Oct 2021 | 00:44:25
This episode is something a little bit different. Several weeks ago, Andy and Felix hosted a very special evening for Cartier — exploring the Maison’s watchmaking collections live in front of a select group of Australian guests. This presentation, which covered the importance of lines like Tank, Privé and fine watchmaking, explored the history and legacy of these collections as well as some highlight pieces, watches like the Tank Cintrée, through to more modern pieces like the innovative Tank Must Solarbeat. We also talk about the legendary Crash and show off an emerald-decked example. We also check out the Santos and find out why the Pantheré is such an important emblem for the brand. We also open up for questions, which is something we’ve never done before, great fun and definitely something we should do again. On top of all this, we will also upload the stream to our Youtube, so if you’ve ever wanted to see the watches we talk about or just check out Felix’s lockdown hair, this is the perfect opportunity. This episode is sponsored by Cartier, to learn more about the watches we discuss, visit your local boutique or head to cartier.com Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! | Blake Buettner (Worn & Wound) on value, the micro scene and Grand Seiko’s growing pains | 21 Oct 2021 | 01:06:35
Today’s guest is Blake Buettner, watch media veteran and Managing Editor of Worn & Wound. Given his day job at the leading value-driven watch site, we naturally spend a lot of time chatting about what a value watch looks like in 2021 and whether or not a watch with four or more zeros in the price tag can be ‘value’, On a related note we cover off the state of the micro-brand scene, and dive into two of the watch enthusiasts traditional darlings, Seiko and Grand Seiko, and what their rapid growth and changing focus (epitomised by the White Birch) means for the brand. We also find out how Blake is — indirectly — responsible for getting Andy into mechanical watches, what really makes for a daily wearer and the joy of clacky keyboards. All that plus Andy and Felix go hands-on with the Apple Watch Series 7. | Silas Walton (A Collected Man) on indies, hype and the what to watch out for | 14 Oct 2021 | 01:17:18
Seven years ago, Silas Walton founded A Collected Man, and in that time, it has grown into one of the most respected names in high-end and independent watch sales. If you’re in the market something special, be it an upper-tier independent like F. P. Journe, a connoisseur-grade Cartier or investment-level Patek, A Collected Man is the place to go (it’s also a great place to go if you want to read some of Andy and Felix’s great articles) As Walton explains though, this wasn’t always the case — the digital landscape has changed dramatically in the last few years, quickly gaining credibility with brands and consumers alike. We also chart a change in Walton’s own tastes, from the moment he decided to take the plunge into a Patek Philippe reference 5940, to falling in love with independent watches and seeing their business potential. Time clearly proved him right, and we find out how Walton is less concerned with making the sale and more worried about managing their place in the market, as well as being careful not to hype their own supply. So whether you’re interested in the rise of independent and neo-vintage watches, or the business of how they’re bought or sold, you’ll want to listen to this. | Gabe Reilly (Collective Horology) on evolving taste in watches and his love letter to IWC | 07 Oct 2021 | 01:15:12
Today on the pod, we chat with Collective Horology co-founder Gabe Reilly. And we’re speaking to Gabe for a very good reason because Collective has just teamed up with IWC to release the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph C.03, Which Reilly describes as a love letter to IWC. To be fair, he also describes it as that watch you would get if you time-travelled back to IWC in the mid-90s, kidnapped the design team and brought them back to 2021. Thankfully for all involved, no time-shenanigans were involved in this watch. IWC still has a decidedly no-nonsense aesthetic, and Mr Klaus and Mr Habring haven’t been pruned from the timeline. We also find out how Cartier and James Bond got Reilly into watches, and explore how community has changed over time – as well as what stayed the same. Finally, Felix and Andy have some profound realisations about the nature of their working relationship. As you do. | Adrian Barker (Bark and Jack) on YouTube crackdowns, Vacheron Constantin and why he can't get behind Hublot | 30 Sep 2021 | 00:56:39
Adrian Barker (from Bark & Jack) is back! We get the inside story on all the YouTube drama, from increasing collaboration to the poorly planned implosion of the Timepiece Gentlemen, and the negative effect it had on the broader watch community. We also get Adrian’s take on just why so many watch YouTubers are having videos removed. Is it the algorithm or something more sinister? Moving onto watches, we find out what Adrian thought of the two-tone Explorer and the new Vacheron Constantin ‘Everest’ editions. Felix also called Adrian out for trash-talking Hublot. So if you’ve ever wondered who would win in a fight between Felix and Adrian, listen in (hint, the answer is Andy). Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! | Jonathan Ferrer (Brew Watches) on building a brand identity and the micro scene in 2021 | 23 Sep 2021 | 00:53:18
Andy first met Jonathan Ferrer from Brew Watches back in 2015, at the first Worn & Wound Wind Up Watch fair. And while Brew’s heart can still be found in a good cup of coffee, the brand has evolved and matured with the times. We talk to Jonathan about balancing growth while staying true to the brand vision. Jonathan also talks about the founding impetus for Brew, built off his work as a freelance watch designer and the importance of coming out of the gate strong, with a powerful silhouette that triggers nostalgia. We also get into the nuts and bolts of a small watch business, the importance of social media, how to balance stock and customer expectations, as well as why Brew went all out with the bracelet of the Metric, which is unusually complicated for a $400 watch. | Industry expert Robin Swithinbank on 20 years in the watch business, sustainability and rebranding the grey market | 16 Sep 2021 | 01:03:42
Robin Swithinbank’s Instagram bio reads that he’s on the frontline of luxury journalism — a position he’s held fearlessly for the last 20 years. We managed to pry Robin away from New York Times, Hodinkee and GQ deadlines to talk about the changes he’s witnessed in the previous two decades, and the changes he sees coming. With the rise of sustainability and e-sports, through to the vulgarity of watches as an asset class and rebranding the secondary market, Robin has a well-informed take on the space that only experience can bring. Often we get swept up in the details of product and can forget to analyse the macro level – where the industry is going and what existential problems it faces — not with Robin. If you’re interested in the big picture on the business of watches, this is one you won’t want to miss. | Hot Takes 2024 feat. Tudor, Cartier + the return of big watches | 04 Apr 2024 | 00:42:57
This week’s episode contains more spice than Dune 1 and 2 combined — welcome to the first hot takes episode of 2024. Fuelled by the hottest takes from the OT: discord, Andy and Felix debate some of the most burning (and a few of the most trivial) issues the watch industry faces in 2024. From thought-provoking claims like ‘if Tudor dropped the Snowflake hand they’d be more successful’ and ‘the swing back to big watches is inevitable’ through to less earth-shattering takes like ‘120 bezel clicks are too many’, Andy and Felix wade fearlessly through the most controversial of takes. | Chatting with mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner for Montblanc, plus Beyonce, Jay-Z and Diddy’s take on Richard Mille | 02 Sep 2021 | 00:44:06
If you know anything about climbing mountains, you know Reinhold Messner. The first man to climb Everest solo, Messner popularised the alpine style of climbing. Recently he’s collaborated with Montblanc to celebrate his solo crossing of the Gobi Desert. Felix talks to him about adventure, the environment and the importance of failure. Beyond that, we find out why Beyonce, Jay-Z and Diddy have been in the luxury headlines and why Kurono Tokyo got caught up in Instagram drama. Felix spends some time with Piaget; Andy gets excited about a rice cooker and catches up on a grunty Henry Cavill in The Witcher. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Grab a slice of the action with the pre-order for Felix and Andy’s Pizzeria Shirt and Dad Cap. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? | Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO, on bold design and bright materials, plus the most colourful watches of 2021 | 26 Aug 2021 | 00:41:34
This week’s episode is a bit of a two-parter. The main attraction is, of course, Felix’s chat with Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe. Recorded during Watches & Wonders earlier this year, Mr Guadalupe discusses the difficulties of working with sapphire, and Hublot came to excel in technical case materials. They also talk about the important role art plays to the brand and why collaborations with creatives like Maxime Pleschia-Büchi (who you may remember from the other week) and Takashi Murakami push watch design forward. But before we get to all that goodness, andy and Felix keep it colourful by wrapping some of the year’s brightest releases, and Andy also gives us a look behind the scenes on his latest article for A Collected Man. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Grab a slice of the action with the pre-order for Felix and Andy’s Pizzeria Shirt and Dad Cap. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? | August news wrap – Ming, Massena Lab and opening a PAM of worms | 19 Aug 2021 | 00:36:22
In this 100 per cent in-house production of OT:, Andy and Felix look back on the spicy cocktail that was August 2021 and provides some searing insight into the watch headlines. There are good news stories like a near-instant sell out of vintage pocket watches, a wee dram of anOrdain and Andy getting up to speed with the new Masenna Lab. It’s not all so peachy, as issues like quality control over at Ming, as well as (more) drama around a decidedly not-in-house Panerai movement. And then there’s the question of what Chrono24 will do with 100 million euros and what that means for watch collecting. Exciting times. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Grab a slice of the action with the pre-order for Felix and Andy’s Pizzeria Shirt and Dad Cap. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? | 💯 Maxime Plescia-Büchi on Hublot, Kanye and good design — plus big updates from the OT: team | 12 Aug 2021 | 01:38:49
Pop the bubbles and get ready to party because OT: just clocked in 100 episodes. To celebrate, we’ve pulled out all the stops. We’ve put together some pizza-themed merch, which is as wholesome as you’d expect. But more than that, we offer the first taste of our upcoming watch collaboration, and we can’t wait to tell you more. The main course in today’s celebration, though is Maxime Plescia-Büchi, the founder of Sang Blue, who you likely know from his successful series of Hublot limited editions. Of course, we chat to Maxime about Hublot and what it’s like to tattoo Kanye West, but we also use the opportunity to get his take on watch design. As you might expect from an artist and designer of Maxime’s background, he has an interesting take on watch design, one that is informed by his own collecting habits. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Grab a slice of the action with the pre-order for Felix and Andy’s Pizzeria Shirt and Dad Cap. | EPISODE 99: Hot ones - Andy, Felix and your spiciest takes 🔥 🔥 🔥 | 07 Aug 2021 | 00:38:39
🔥 Inspired by a chat on our community Discord, Andy and Felix dedicate this entire episode to the spiciest of hot takes. Andy takes the heat out of hype watches, while Felix disses one of the most popular complications out there. That’s the great thing about a good hot take, though — it doesn’t need to be particularly rational or even fully formed, just passionate (and preferably spicy). The heat continues thanks to some California Reaper level heat from Discord members who have thoughts about premium prices, date windows and everything in between. In less watch-related yet still caliente) Andy has been reliving GTA, and Felix ranks his favourite Dwayne Johnson movies with ‘Jungle’ in the title. Oh, and remember, if you want in on the hot take action, join our Discord server in the link below. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord! The home of the hot take. | Dan Brunn (Dan Brunn Architecture) on timeless design, the importance of scale and his ultimate Omega | 29 Jul 2021 | 01:07:53
Calling in from Los Angeles is today’s guest Dan Brunn, an award-winning architect whose practice is inspired by sustainability and growing up amid the Bauhaus buildings of Tel Aviv. We find out how Dan leapt headfirst into the world of bespoke architecture by scoring a prestigious Venice beach build fresh out of architecture school. We also find out about the 'Flip Flop' house, and what it’s like to live in something you created. We also chat to Dan about good design in general and how that translates to watches … in particular, an intriguing Omega project. But before that, Felix and Andy also manage to cover off a new whisky from Lark, new tunes from Patrick Droney and some new reality TV. Honestly, what more could you want? | Asher Rapkin (Collective Horology) on creating communities and collaborating with Urwerk | 22 Jul 2021 | 01:12:39
Today's guest is none other than Asher Rapkin. By day Asher is a marketer for Facebook, but by night he's the co-founder of Collective Horology, a community of watch lovers held together by collaborative watches. The latest collab just launched, and it's the very cool, out-of-this-world Urwerk UR100-V P.02 for Collective. We chat to Asher about what inspired this watch, as well as get into the nuts, bolts and balance sheets as to how a limited edition is made, from working out quantities to design tweaks. We also find out why Collective exists in an age when Instagram and other platforms have made finding watch enthusiasts easier than ever. Another unique aspect about Collective is that it's quite small, private, and you can only join through an 'application process' — something that Rapkin admits still makes him roll his eyes. So if you're curious about Collective, love Urwerk or just want to hear Felix go on about his favourite conspiracy theory, you've come to the right place. This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer. | Jasper Lijfering (Amsterdam Vintage Watches), AKA the 'King of Vintage' on selling a watch to Ellen – plus Sex/Life spotting | 15 Jul 2021 | 01:08:21
This week we chat to the man who calls himself the King of Vintage. Jasper Lijfering is the man behind Amsterdam Vintage Watches and its transformation from a family business into one of the most recognised watch dealers online, thanks to a combination of hard work, social media smarts and transparency. Jasper tells us about the ups and downs of life in the spotlight — from robberies to stunts, as well as just how he ended up selling a John Player Special to none other than Ellen DeGeneres. On top of that, we talk about Mario powering up TAG Heuer and just why Andy was shocked by Sex/Life. This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer. Listen in as Andy and Felix chat all things Aquaracer. | Jenni Elle on Audemars Piguet and Watches & Wonders | 21 Mar 2024 | 01:09:18
It’s been a hot minute, but we’re excited to have the one and only Jenni Elle back on the podcast. In case you’re not across her work, Jenni Elle is one of the biggest personalities on watch YouTube and a genuinely lovely person. The big news from Jenni Elle’s side of the world is that she’s had a child, so obviously, we talk about the pros and cons of passing it on to the next generation. In addition to the joys of a baby’s first Patek, we chat with Jenni about Watches & Wonders, including a bit of chat about what we can expect from everyone’s favourite hype brands, Rolex and Patek Philippe. But before that, we interrogated the new white-dialled Speedmaster, and argue over the finer points of whether or not a safe watch is inherently boring. We also cover the new releases from Audemars Piguet, including John Mayer’s Crystal Sky Perpetual Calendar. | The highlights from Only Watch 2021 – feat. Tudor, Audemars Piguet and F.P. Journe | 08 Jul 2021 | 00:47:15
This week Andy and Felix are talking about some of the highlight watches from Only Watch, a bi-annual charity auction consisting only of … you guessed it … watches. But more than that, it’s an auction of one-of-a-kind pieces, and things get a little wild. This year there are 54 pieces submitted, including a HAND-some F.P. Journe (made in collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola of all people), a super aged-Tudor GMT and heaps of orange. Listen in for the insightful analysis, wild price speculation and why Jack Black would make a perfect Omega ambassador. This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer. Listen in as Andy and Felix discuss the finer points of the updated Aquaracer. Check it out for yourself here. https://www.tagheuer.com/ Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? | Edouard Meylan (H. Moser) on the brand's new releases and direction for 2021 plus the Tudor 58 in bronze | 01 Jul 2021 | 00:39:34
This week Andy goes on a solo mission, chatting to Edouard Meylan, the charismatic and thoughtful CEO of H. Moser. From how the Meylan's acquired the legacy brand and what the future holds, through to the importance of community in brand building, we quickly learn that Moser does things a little different. Nowhere is that more apparent than with their periodic campaigns poking fun at the wider industry. From watches made of Swiss cheese to the masterful parody that is the Alp Watch, Moser isn't afraid of being bold. But behind the sometimes polarising pranks, there's always a purpose: standing up for what you believe in, a trait that makes Moser the brand they are today. It's not all Moser talk though, before the interview, Felix and Andy talk about just how wild it is that Tudor has a brand-new stand-alone boutique in Melbourne, something unimaginable a few years ago. Plus, some top-line thoughts on the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight in bronze. Show notes: https://www.otpodcast.com.au/show-notes/s2e37 This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer.
