| The Affordable Watch BANGERS: Timex, Bulova, Seiko & Interview with Earthen Watches | 07 Nov 2025 | 00:45:33 | |
This week, we're really locked in on watches that you can actually afford without taking out a small personal loan or a non-essential organ. Andy and Felix start off by chatting about some recent bangers from Timex, Bulova and Seiko, before jumping into the main chat with co-founder of Earthen, Johnathan Chan. Earthen is a fresh face from Hong Kong, but its accessibly priced ceramic pilot's watches drew a lot of attention when they launched earlier this year. We chat to Chan about the story behind the brand, the finer details of ceramic watches and why accessible pricing matters.

This week, we catch up with Andrea Casalegno, better known on the internet as I Am Casa. Casa is a watch journalist and content creator who burst onto the scene with his exceptional taste and love of the organic Melting Watch from Exaequo. We chat about why this Dali-esque design is so significant for Casa, why Italians have such a reputation for being tastemakers when it comes to vintage watches, and why watch burnout is a real thing.

| IWC and F1, D1 Milano and a watch for Dungeons & Dragons | 03 Jul 2025 | 00:32:22 | |
This week, Andy and Felix catch up on a busy few weeks as well as some watch-shaped deliveries that have made their way to the OT office. But first, Felix (literally and figuratively) puts on his film reviewer hat to talk about the F1 movie, and the many IWCs that can be spotted in it. Then, a brief chat about travel and Roger Dubuis, before we dive into the mailbag and come up with a beautiful bespoke strap from anOrdain, some good, honest fun from D1 Milano and the Timestop D-20, a dice-rolling watch made for the Dungeons & Dragons aficionados on the go. | Mark Cho (The Armoury) on selling his watch collection | 01 Dec 2022 | 00:46:07
So much of the discussion in the watch space is around the acquisition of new watches. Yet the other untold side of the story is that for every watch bought, another is sold. Mark Cho (The Armoury) is balancing the scales. He's selling off the bulk of his collection to fund the expansion of his business, The Armoury, and he's doing it through Phillips. Rather than anonymously consign his watches, Mark has made a custom site – called The Beauty in Everything – showcasing the watches and some of the stories behind them. Even if you're not in the market for a new watch, it's well worth having a look at Mark's significant and very tasteful collection. None of Mark Cho's watches came on Artem straps. Don't make the same mistake. Buy one here. Like your watches with a dash of community inclusion? Try our Discord . Show Notes: https://www.otpodcast.com.au/show-notes

| John Buckley on Rolex dials, watch deals and cracking TikTok | 17 Nov 2022 | 01:19:08 | |
Today's guest, John Buckley, casts a long shadow over the world of vintage Rolex. He's a veteran of the New York watch scene who has seen trends come and hype go, which makes the fact that he's TikTok famous somewhat surprising. Buckley's TikTok's follow him on his visits to the dealers of 47th street and gives you a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing of watches far removed from the white glove service of the boutique environment. Gem-set Daytonas sit in plastic pouches, waiting to be plucked out by John, who will inevitably ask, "how much is this $60,000 watch." We find out what John thinks about the watch market's state, why he's on TikTok and why a reality watch TV show might be coming to a streaming service near you. This episode is sponsored by G-Shock Australia. This week, in our retrospective exploration of the iconic model, we discuss the watch in the 2000s. Eminem, Bieber and all the other cool kids wear them. Stay tuned for more on the future of the digital icon, and discover more at G-Shock Australia. Artem straps! They're great. Today we chat with veteran luxury and lifestyle journalist Kristen Shirley, the founder of La Patiala. Kristen's journey into watches starts the best way possible — Baselworld. After a crash course in the fundamentals of fine watchmaking, Shirley was hooked, and eventually developed The Watch Encyclopaedia section of her site. We also chat to Kristen about American taste in watches and how the industry is evolving to incorporate more diverse perspectives. Before that, Felix and Andy weigh in on the brand new (and very big) Deepsea Challenge, and why Kenny Rogers' Zodiac is an unsung piece of horological history. | Chris Hall (The Fourth Wheel) on chiming Omegas, integrated Bremonts and Newsletters | 27 Oct 2022 | 01:00:08
We enjoyed our chat with Chris Hall so much that we just had to have him back, and we did! Chris chats to us about his exceptionally good Substack, The Fourth Wheel, which provides him with an avenue to share a broader scope of stories and insights about the world of watches. And while the newsletter is great, we thought we'd get his patented 'Fourth Wheel' take on some of the latest releases — including Omega's surprising pair of chiming watches, as well as Chris' hands-on thoughts about the Bremont Supernova (and what it means for the future of the brand), and why TAG Heuer's confidence is paying off (hello Mario!) | October News – New Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, plus Apple Ultra v Google Pixel | 20 Oct 2022 | 00:40:44
What does it say about the state of the luxury watch business when two of the world's pre-eminent Australian-based podcast-hosting watch experts are more into releases from Apple and Google than Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet? We're not sure, but that doesn't stop us from diving into it. Yes, we talk about the new Patek releases, AKA the Stern family edging well-heeled watch nerds with overpriced steel sports watches (as well as some genuinely cool stuff), and Audemars Piguet's 800-stone monochromatic gem-coated flex set. Really though, we had a lot more fun with the smartwatches. Andy has been rocking the Apple Watch Ultra for a while, and it's changed his relationship with smartwatches. Felix, on the other hand, is finally enjoying a 'manufacture' Android smartwatch, the Google Pixel. Show notes: https://www.otpodcast.com.au/show-notes Need sailcloth? Try Artem — here. | Stan Barrett, Hollywood stunt legend on being the fastest man alive and his friend Paul Newman | 13 Oct 2022 | 01:03:37
This week, our episode lasts about an hour, and to be honest, we only scratch the surface of the stories our guest, Stan Barrett, has to tell. Not only has Stan lived a remarkable life — a stuntman with over 50 years of experience. He's also a race car driver who, in 1979, strapped into the Budweiser rocket car and broke the speed of sound — becoming the fastest man on the land. But naturally, our conversation drifted to his friend and colleague Paul Newman. Stan worked as Paul's stunt double in many movies, and they became fast friends. Stan also talks about the watches (and Volvo station wagon) Paul gave him over the years and why he's auctioning them off for charity. Need sailcloth? Try Artem — here. | Reuben Schoots, the Australian watchmaker building a watch in his garage | 06 Oct 2022 | 00:47:16
Australia is about as far away from the watchmaking centres of the world as it's possible to get. That hasn't stopped Reuben Schoots, hailing from our nations capital, from learning the art, and building his own watch, from scratch. Several years ago, while Schoots was recovering from chronic illnesses he picked up while travelling, he was introduced to the world of mechanical watches and dived in head-first. Like many people newly enamoured with the topic, he picked up a copy of George Daniels' Watchmaking. Unlike many people he understood it. More than that, he undertook his own Daniels-inspired watchmaking project. This led to an interest in tool-making and, later, CNC technology. Next thing you know, Schoots has pre-sold six pieces from his first series, and watchmaking in Australia might very well be about to enter a new era. Thanks to Isamu Sawa for the images, which you can find on Reason for Being. Show notes - https://www.otpodcast.com.au/show-notes Looking for sleek blue straps? Find them at Artem — here. We caught the All Black and Tudor ambassador between matches and chatted about the life and pressures of being one of the best rugby players in the world in one of the most legendary teams of all time. Naturally, we also talked about Tudor, its legacy, and how to travel with a watch. | Zach Piña on Adventure and Photography, plus the new Baume & Mercier Clifton | 19 Jun 2025 | 01:00:02
Unlike the vast majority of people working in the "watch media' today's guest, Zach Piña lives the daring life of adventure that you see in glossy watch advertisements. This is because Zach is one of the people responsible for creating these advertisements. We talk to Zach about diving under waves, racing classic cars in the desert and taking to the skies in pursuit of the perfect shot. We also chatted about his history in watches, why the Golden Eye pause menu was a core memory, and which industry figure would make a great Bond villain. Before that, we talk about why the Baume & Mercier Clifton is one of the best watches of 2025 and some stylish new updates to the integrated Riviera. | Carson Chan on the future of the watch industry and GPHG | 22 Sep 2022 | 01:10:22
In the middle of our chat with Carson Chan, Chief Advisor to the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, he makes a bold claim — that no other type of object has changed from the category of 'need' to the category of 'want' as profoundly as the wristwatch. Since recording the call, Andy and Felix have been wracking their brains for a better answer – but still haven't come up with one. This insight is one of Carson's many pearls of wisdom. We also speak about his role at the FHH, the state of collecting, the future of the industry and how to improve the GPHG. On top of that, Carson effortlessly schools Felix and Andy with one of his fiendish Instagram quizzes. Suffice it to say a good time was had by all. Looking for less loops? | Neha Bajpai (Wristcheck) on Moser, Cartier and the watch scene in India | 15 Sep 2022 | 00:50:48
This week Andy and Felix catch up with Neha Bajpai, a veteran of the watch journalism biz who's currently looking after Wristcheck's editorial. Neha shares her experience in watches — including her deep and abiding love for the recently released Moser Streamliner Vantablack Tourbillon in Red Gold. More than that, we find out the sort of stories that Neha loves to write and why commerce-based sites are writing (arguably) better watch stories than watch news sites. | Nicolas Bos, CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels on storytelling in time — plus, are watches boring? | 01 Sep 2022 | 00:41:47
This week we talk about two extremes in watchmaking. First, Andy and Felix ponder the theory that 2022 might actually be one of the most unexciting years on record when it comes to watch releases. Secondly, Felix speaks to a man who directly contradicts this claim — CEO and Creative Director of Van Cleef & Arpels, Mr Nicolas Bos. Van Cleef & Arpel's watchmaking is less concerned with the passing of minutes and seconds and more about creating emotion. This is why, in the world of VC&A's poetic storytelling, you're likely to find the time being told with a flower or the wing of a fairy. We chat to Mr Bos about the importance of this approach and the brand's Extraordinary Objects, one-off creations that combine high jewellery skills, timekeeping and automata that definitely live up to the name. | Jacek Kozubek (Tropical Watch) on vintage watches, life lessons and the cheesiest Rolex out there | 25 Aug 2022 | 01:03:10

From that point on, we get a little more on-topic and find out what it takes to become a vintage watch dealer and, more importantly, what it takes to sustain it for 14 years. From market highs and occasional lows, it's clear Jacek is in it for the long haul, talking to us about the realities of dealing and imparting some hard-earned watch-collecting wisdom. | Gordon Dundas (Glengoyne) on whisky, watches and what links the two | 11 Aug 2022 | 00:57:11
Time for a taste of something a little different. No watches this week, only whisky. We speak to Gordon Dundas, a whisky industry veteran who is International Brand Ambassador for Ian Macleod Distillers, responsible for well-known (and well-aged) Glengoyne. We find out from Gordon why time and place make whisky such a special drink, and learn a little about the business of whisky. And it's a business with (perhaps) surprising parallels to watches in terms of the importance of heritage and tradition, but also when it comes to the challenges facing the business in 2022. Certainly, both industries are increasingly global, and growing interest has led to vexing issues of supply and demand. So, settle in for a fascinating chat about the wonderful world of whisky. | What if ... Elon Musk bought Patek, Subs went out of style and other hypotheticals | 30 Jun 2022 | 00:46:04
This week we dusted off the (sapphire) crystal ball and gazed into the multiverse of madness, and played out some hypothetical watch scenarios. What if Rolex doubled production in a few years? Could Apple make a mechanical watch? Will sports watches ever go out of style, and what would it take for Andy to buy a Seahawk. In this light-hearted rundown of (mostly) unlikely situations, we play out the scenarios, to mixed success. But not everything in this episode is made up, the new Ahoi is very solid indeed, and Huawei's battery life has no right to be that good. The episode is sponsored by NOMOS Glashütte, tune in to hear Felix diving into the Ahoi Atlantic. Check it out for yourself here. Artem Straps customiser hasn't come online yet. | David Concannon on exploration, the law and finding Apollo 11's engines | 23 Jun 2022 | 01:06:56
We joke about National Treasure a lot on OT: But this week, we get as close as we're ever likely to get to the real deal with explorer, lawyer and exploration consultant David Concannon. His CV covers off multiple dives to the Titanic, the discovery of the world's deepest wooden shipwreck and helping Jeff Bezos find Apollo 11's engines, and that's just the top line. Concannon also explains how exploration and the law are firmly entwined, and gives us a crash course on the economics of exploring. Of course, we also talk about watches, and his surprising friendship with one of Hollywood's greatest stuntmen. Today we speak to Gerry Nelson, one of Melbourne's best dressed and a master of the knit fit. Naturally, we get some top tips on shawl collars and sweaters, but we also find out why Gerry suddenly got back into watches and why, after years of wear, he decided Rolex wasn't for him. In a period of a few short months, Gerry has a stacked watch box, full of key pieces that aren't the usual suspects. We talk through some of the selections and find out where a watch fits into Gerry's style language and wardrobe, as well as what comes next. Today we speak to Dr Lorenz Brunner, the Farther of Ceratanium, about materials technology at IWC Schaffhausen. And IWC is a leader in the field of ceramics. The brand uses ceramic in cases, of course, but is also the only maker to serially produce ceramic movement components. | Ross Povey (Tudor Collector) on Tudor, Rolex and the rise of gem-set watches | 12 May 2022 | 01:10:44
You can't venture too deep into the waters of vintage Tudor without coming across Ross Povey. His love for the brand that was once seen as Rolex's 'little brother' stemmed from seeing quirky, colourful dials of vintage Tudor chronographs and from there, things escalated quickly. Povey talks to us about the rapid renaissance of the once-forgotten brand, and what they got right at Watches & Wonders 2022. And because Povey refuses to be easily categorised, he also has a deep and abiding love of gem-set Rolex. | Now live: R.T. Custer (Vortic Watches) on making old new again, plus new Panerai and Rolex | 05 May 2022 | 01:06:41
In this week's episode, Andy chats to R.T. Custer, the man behind one of the most interesting American watch brands, Vortic. We find out how a college project into American-made turned into a viable business which almost didn't make it because of a prolonged legal battle with one of the Swiss industry giants. In 2020, Vortic walked away from the five-year legal battle as the victor, and has wasted no time getting down to business, upcycling old pocketwatches into new wrist-friendly watches. Andy finds out about the realities of preserving the great era of American watchmaking and some of the lessons RT Custer has learned along the way. On top of that, Felix and Andy finally see watches IRL again, including Rolex, Rado and Oris. They also chat about how Panerai is leading the way in sustainable watchmaking. | Michael Culyba - Keeper of Time movie | 21 Apr 2022 | 00:55:46
Five years ago, Michael Culyba, like many of us, fell in love with the world of mechanical watches. Michael, unlike the rest of us, turned that passion into a feature-length documentary. Keeper of Time explores the world of independent watchmaking, and the meaning of time itself in a beautiful, educational, and at times poignant way. Featuring the stories of Philippe Dufour, Roger Smith, François-Paul Journe and Max Büsser, and a host of other industry leaders. It's an enormously engaging work and an impressive directorial debut for Culyba. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. Zoe Abelson, AKA @watchgirloffduty, is one of the internet's best-known watch dealers. With a feed comprising of colourful, quirky watches in often exotic locales, it's easy to assume that being an international watch dealer is a non-stop glamour fest. And while Zoe doesn't exactly disprove the notion, she tells us about the decade of non-stop work in some of the world's most well-respected watch businesses that led her to step out on her own and start Graal Limited. We also find out about the finer points of sourcing a specific watch, as well as what sort of requests she can't stand. | Our take on Watches and Wonders 2022 | 07 Apr 2022 | 00:46:07
The proverbial dust has settled on Watches and Wonders, which, by all accounts was a successful return to form for the watch fair. This week, Andy and Felix talk through the highlights (and some of the more controversial releases) from the comfort of their own homes. Breitling's 70th anniversary relaunch of the Navitimer in the skies of Switzerland kicked affairs off, followed by a flurry of eyebrow-raising releases from Rolex, Patek Philippe and others. Tudor and TAG Heuer did well and Cartier crushed it as per usual. Finally Felix and Andy pick their early faves from the fair, with Andy keeping it humble in platinum and Felix fell in love with the elegance of solar power. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. | Breitling's CEO Georges Kern on the new Navitimer and the need to keep adapting | 31 Mar 2022 | 00:40:48
Earlier this week, Breitling took to the skies (literally) to relaunch the iconic Navitimer, a watch that, 70 years ago, defined the pilot's watch with its functionality and purpose. Today though, we chat to the man who masterminded the relaunch, Breitling CEO Georges Kern. Kern has, throughout his long career in the watch business, been a dynamic leader with a strong vision of what a successful watch brand looks like. Felix finds out how in a few short years, he's steered the brand into its most authentic expression yet, and how the Navitimer has maintained its relevance in an era of ubiquitous technology. On top of that, we get Mr Kern's take on the state of supply, demand and the watch market. Before that though, Andy and Felix chat about MoonSwatch drama, Tiffany's questionable NFTs and what it's like on the ground in Geneva. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. | Lydia Winters and Vu Bui on Youtube, photography and why the Pelagos FXD might be the perfect watch | 17 Mar 2022 | 01:23:50
Double trouble this week with the horological/photographic power couple that is Lydia Winters and Vu Bui. With a shared love of watches, photography and videography, it was only a matter of time before these passions combined into a YouTube channel, called (appropriately enough) Winters & Bui. We talk about their plans for the channel, the importance of authenticity and why quality content will always shine through. Naturally, we get some practical photography tips and find out about Lydia's love of Hasselblad. And while the shared couples watch might be the dream for many people, it isn't something that works for Vu and Lydia, so we get their take on inter-relationship watch trading and what it's like to actually wear (and scratch) a hype watch. | Steve Corica (Sydney FC) plus why we need to stop spotting watches, and redemption for Franck Muller | 10 Mar 2022 | 00:41:18

We chat to Steve about the changing profile of football in Australia, what it's like to make the move from player to coach and how technology and science are changing the game. And given that Edifice is a fresh team sponsor, we chat about the importance of timing and the culture of footballers' watches. In other news, Andy must have been enjoying a spice-heavy diet recently, as he's full of hot takes. | Nick Kenyon (Boss Hunting) on watches in the mainstream, Seiko and his quirky collection | 10 Feb 2022 | 01:13:48
This week we keep it local with Nick Kenyon, the editor of Australian site Boss Hunting. But before he was talking yachts, rocks and crocs he was a full-time watch guy, having worked with Felix at Time+Tide. Nick drops knowledge on the current watch market, how the niche influences the mainstream and what the anOrdain Model 2 OT: Edition is like on the wrist. Plus, Felix hypes up 1999 and Andy throws his dad under the bus. This week's episode is sponsored by Artem Straps. Check out their sailcloth straps here.
