TitlePub. DateDuration
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York15 Nov 202100:29:06
In 1992 a sequel to a huge holiday hit just needed to change the villains method of thievery from wet to sticky.

Ignore the above description of HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK... we assure you that this is a family friendly film. Presumably certified as such by existing on the Disney+ platform until the end of time.

On this episode we discuss sequels essentially serving as a remake by doing a cinematic version of jumping the shark in a very special vacation episode where Macaulay Culkin travels to New York to meet up with his old punching bags Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Along the way all three are disgusted by a lady covered in bird poop. Happy holidays!

Home Alone09 Nov 202100:35:18
In 1990 moviegoers learned how to call a small child "incompetent" in French.

And then the world would know Kevin McCallister's wrath... or at the very least Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern who got a bit too handsy with Christmas goods.

Among other crimes.

On this episode one host looks upon with horror as he continues to procreate while the childless host looks on in equal horror at what he's done. Then we enjoy a holiday classic with the Chris Columbus directed original in the HOME ALONE cinematic universe.

Repeat: I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1998)28 Sep 202000:41:32

We conclude the "I Know What You Did.." series with the sequel to the 1997 hit and talk about the problematic Jack Black and more of Jennifer Love Hewitt. And like many sequels that get rushed after the success of the first installment, does this one suffer like many of those do?

Man On Wire and The Walk07 Oct 201501:03:56

We are joined by Jamison of Real Films Podcast to compare the movies MAN ON WIRE and THE WALK about Philippe Petit, who planned a coup to walk on a tightrope between the World Trade Center in 1974.

The Longest Yard 1974 and 200530 Sep 201501:06:39

With the kickoff of American football, we are in the mood for a double feature of THE LONGEST YARD. In the 1974 version, Burt Reynolds has us scratching our hairy chests in admiration, while Adam Sandler has us scratching our (egg shaped) heads at the jokes presented on screen. Find out which film we chose, the original or the remake, and also which centerfold graces Mike's wall.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 2009 and 201111 Sep 201501:06:46

On this episode, we are joined by CHRIS MAYNARD of FOLLOWING FILMS POD to talk about the Swedish and American adaptation of the first book from the Millennium trilogy, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.

The Man Who Knew Too Much 1934 and 195631 Aug 201501:20:00

On this episode of Original Remake: two podcasters who do not know that much about film tackle one of the masters of the form TWICE as we talk THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, Alfred Hitchcock's 1934 original and his own 1956 remake.

Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky10 Aug 201501:43:08

On this episode Karly from That Pop This Life joins us to talk about the dream life of Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky, which is the remake of Abre Los Ojos. Listen to our latest to find out which life extension journey you should take, the original or the remake.

The Heartbreak Kid 1972 and 200724 Jul 201501:32:21

On this episode we give our hearts to Charles Grodin and Ben Stiller in two versions of THE HEARTBREAK KID. Which will sweep us off our feet and which will break our heart? Guest WEB BIST from the podcast IT'S TERRIFIC joins us to help choose an appropriate movie marriage match.

The Incredible Shrinking Man and Woman10 Jul 201501:20:59

Charles Grodin month kicks off with a remake of 1957's THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN! Except the 1981 version switches genders, starring not Mr. Grodin, but Lily Tomlin as THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN. Unfortunately the look at shrinking masculinity and the shrinking appreciation of a woman in her family's life is not visible in one film. Listen to see which we chose: the original or the remake.

Oldboy 2003 and 201325 Jun 201501:38:17

On this episode we welcome Old Oldboy, New Oldboy, and Karly from the podcasts That Pop This Life and Talking Shondaland to talk about vengeance, eating octopus, and Josh Brolin's lack of body hair.

The Haunting 1963 and 199911 Jun 201501:20:39

Like the characters in THE HAUNTING both from 1963 and 1999, we decided to stay in another haunted house after our prior POLTERGEIST episode. And unfortunately we don't have a mutual love of Sam Rockwell to save us from the evil spirits, instead discussing the haunted year of 1999 for Liam Neeson's career, the scary aging process of CGI effects, and also where you can find us haunting other podcasts.

Poltergeist 1982 and 201527 May 201501:00:46

On this episode the new theatrical release of POLTERGEIST has us diving into research on the difference between a haunting and a poltergeist and the differences between the 1982 original film and the 2015 remake. Can our love of Sam Rockwell sway us to go with the updated version, or will the shuffle board playing original keep us in the good graces of cinephiles? Check out our latest episode to find out the origin of Remake Boy!

Reboot: I'LL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (2006)14 Sep 202000:31:27

In one of the worst movies ever reviewed on this podcast, we attempted to find positive things to talk about in a sequel no one asked for. With a decent idea with a twist on a retelling of the 1997 film I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997), this installment failed to present anything in the franchise worthy of digging back up.

Infernal Affairs and The Departed13 May 201501:39:08

On the very first episode of the Original Remake podcast we discuss the origins of this show which has something to do with our first double feature selection of INFERNAL AFFAIRS and THE DEPARTED.

Ultimately we seek answers to three questions:
  • Does the remake do justice to the original?
  • And if you just watch the remake do you get a good sense of why the original was successful or not successful and thus remade?
  • But most of all which movie to watch, the original or the remake?
Along the way we talk about the distinct cultural difference of moving the story from INFERNAL AFFAIRS to Boston, the advantage or disadvantage of having a big star like Jack Nicholson playing the big heavy, and the humorous whirlwind of vulgarity that is Dignam in THE DEPARTED.
Remake: URBAN LEGEND (1998)06 Sep 202000:42:59

In preparation for a holiday weekend of no traveling we attempt to comfort you with some scary tales passed down from the 1998 film URBAN LEGEND. Perhaps the one about the killer waiting in the backseat of the car. Or the scratching sound coming from outside the car on Lover's Lane. Even the one about Tara Reid's career. Truly terrifying. All of this and some love for the great thespians coming out of the even greater state of Kentucky in our latest episode!

Original: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)30 Aug 202000:36:12

As we wind down the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad summer of 2020 why not make ourselves feel better by at least NOT being stalked by a smelly fisherman with a hook? To make this even more appealing we spend perhaps an unhealthy amount of time talking about Ryan Phillippe's butt, Jennifer Love Hewitt's chest and our complete lack of trust in Freddie Prinze Jr. to do a hard day's work. But he did marry Buffy! All of this is to say watching I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER was a better time than a pandemic summer. Even if everyone smells of fish.

In which our hosts agree that Hilary Swank could beat us all up (especially those ANIMAL CROSSING player DORKS) but we can't agree with this franchise going into bowling comedy. ...so everyone must be happy, right? WRONG says Dave of YOUR LIST, MY COMMAND.

However his co-host Derek (of the much better THE GRAND GESTURE podcast) calls ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE "better than my own child."

Which extreme opinion do you fancy? Find out by listening to an awful lot of debate over funny books on film in our episode on the two Justice Leagues.

Fright Night 1985 and 201130 Apr 202000:56:28

While the practical applications of horror classic FRIGHT NIGHT might have always been in doubt, in the age of social distancing we see two neighbors truly crossing lines in both the 1985 and 2011 versions of these comedic takes on the vampire genre. And while one host likes his vampire neighbor a bit more aggressive when he comes over to borrow a can of beer the other host, perhaps due to his southern gentlemen upbringing, prefers the charm of an unbuttoned shirt and a come hither gaze. I believe you appropriately in the mood for our long-awaited episode on FRIGHT NIGHT.

A Star Is Born 1976 and 201805 Sep 201900:57:29

This episode reveals the origin story of an unappreciated podcaster with talent who meets a well-known drunk and thus this very podcast was born. Shockingly Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper tell a very similar story in their Oscar-nominated remake of a film that is now on its fourth incarnation. We choose to compare it to the 1976 version with Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson because it's all about the music. Man. Or something like that. Click these links, that's what matters:

Overboard 1987 and 201810 Jan 201900:45:09

Peter is back after being thrown OVERBOARD for our first episode of 2019, but he gets his revenge on co-host Mike by taunting him over his lack of a shoe rack built by The Great Kurt Russell. As it turns out in that 1987 film his co-star Goldie Hawn also does not get such magnificent shelving for shoes and instead through the movie magic of amnesia finds out that she is married to Mr. Russell (life imitates art, I guess) and is now a blue collar mother of three. This original film gave birth to another remake but on this episode we are talking about the 2018 version starring Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris. And we were not amused. Night of the Demon and Drag Me to Hell03 Jan 201900:33:23

2018 is over but we cynically expect 2019 to get a whole hell of a lot worse. And to help us with that doomsday predicting mood we bring on the biggest cinephile cynic we know, Ben Zuk of 99 FROM 99 to take in a double feature of NIGHT OF THE DEMON and DRAG ME TO HELL. And while Sam Raimi's 2009 film was loosely inspired by this 1957 horror movie, they both provide a great playbook with how to live with a curse. For instance one might want to try killing a cat? Or better yet, just leave that to the movies, you'll feel better about yourself and we'll feel better after you click on these links below:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas 1966 and 200028 Dec 201800:50:45

For Christmas 2018 one of us decided to make a trip to theater to see Illumination's new animated GRINCH movie. And while Mike came away pleasantly surprised at this latest version of the Grinch cinematic universe, Peter truly played the part and stayed inside like a hermit to watch the 1966 and 2000 versions of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. We debate the merits of telling this story in a longer form, animated vs. live action, and most importantly of all... do loyal dog companions really care if their Christmas treat says "naughty" or "nice" on it? Mortal Kombat 1995 and 202105 May 2021
It's a fight to the death between two Mortal Kombat movies that are not Annihilation.

For an episode on video game movies we have to bring on a real dork in Jared of SOBER CINEMA. As he speaks with us from the comfort of his gaming chair some important matters discussed in the world of MORTAL KOMBAT:

  • Is using Liu Kang poor form among friends?
  • How about selecting him as your champion to wield against people you despise?
  • Such as maybe a coworker who is an animal and plays with Reptile?

Also we get around to discussing the first feature film adaptation from 1995 and the new HBO Max joint. Because Liu Kang needs no defending.

Rear Window and Disturbia12 Apr 201801:15:32

Guest Web Bist returns to ORIGINAL REMAKE discussing possibly host Mike's ALL TIME FAVORITE FILM in Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW. Is the enthusiasm shared for 2007's loose remake DISTURBIA? Well, no, but we have a lot of fun with this one debating the nuances of how we can root for peeping tom Jimmy Stewart, who chooses his creepy activities over a life with Grace Kelly... and yet we still hate Shia Labeouf SO MUCH MORE. So maybe none of this is surprising, but to wrap up these shownotes with some bit of new information... Web and Mike have a new podcast coming soon called TRILOGY TALK. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three 1974 and 200911 Apr 201800:48:32

For READY PLAYER ONE we do some counting of our own, though as usual we can only manage getting up to two movies. No matter, as this time our original film is the Walter Matthau starring THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE from 1974 and our remake casts Denzel Washington in 2009 for the same part as a train conductor trying to negotiate the release of hostages in New York's subway tunnels. If you want to continue the counting game, try your hand at how many expletives John Travolta throws out during his negotations and also how many times host Peter lets you know that he continues to hate Mr. Matthau. Co-host Mike hates writing up these show notes so let's end it here with some begging to follow at the links below:

Attack the Block and Super 810 Apr 201800:53:56

On this episode we gather up our friends (more specifically Peter and his partner Mike the Troll) to take on not one but TWO alien invasions in the films ATTACK THE BLOCK and SUPER 8. Separated by months in the States back in 2011, these two films share similar premises of teenagers coping with an alien presence in their small communities and we share our own experiences growing up to inform our outlook. Since we can't (or won't) share our teenage battles fighting aliens from outer space, we do our usual thing and stick to the movies. And that's something you can do with us at the links below:

The Apartment and Wicker Park26 Jan 202100:46:33

David Giannini has unfortunately started a new podcast called OFF SCREEN DEATH.

That's bad.

But his co-host is the co-host of this show, Mike Denniston.

That's good.

However as part of the promotional tour for OFF SCREEN DEATH (that's the name of the new movie podcast that is half good and half bad) Dave is the guest on this episode for THE APARTMENT and WICKER PARK.

That's bad.

But the episode is good. We promise. We make fun of Josh Hartnett's hair, Matthew Lillard's face and feud over rights to love Rose Byrne all before Mike starts talking about large breasts in French cinema.

It's more good than bad. Enjoy!

The Jackie Robinson Story and 4221 Feb 201800:40:25

To promote the new indie film BLACK PANTHER we go back to a 2013 film starring Chadwick Boseman, 42. In this film, Mr. Boseman has the challenge of not only playing Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in basseball, but also to try and best Mr. Robinson who played himself in THE JACKIE ROBINSON STORY. This is a first in ORIGINAL REMAKE, although it will not be the first time we do a little sports talk radio. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on if you are a baseball fan, one host has to break these movies down in basketball terms and the other still laments Kevin Durant not making his way to the Celtics. And with that we just lost all of our movie podcast listeners... did we mention that this in celebration of a little movie called BLACK PANTHER?
