Kiril Sokoloff - Lessons From One Of The Greatest Investors Of Our Time

This week I have the great honor of welcoming the distinguished investor Kiril Sokoloff, CEO & Founder of 13D which he started back in 1983.
Kiril is an original thinker who has achieved phenomenal success over his decades of investing, often by going against the consensus. He is also a big advocate of thematic investing and has said “Over the last 40 years I don’t think we missed a single major technological transformation”.
In the late 1970s, he correctly anticipated an inflationary blow-off due to the fall of the Shah in Iran. In the early 1980s, he foresaw a period of disinflation and an ensuing takeover boom that nobody was prepared for. His firm became the expert in 13D filings and between 1983 and 1986, 175 of his firm’s recommendations were taken over. He then understood the great opportunity China in 1992 represented and co-founded the first pure Asian hedge fund during a period when the Hang Seng rose from 4900 to 12000. This was followed among over achievements by investing in internet and e-commerce companies in the 90s pre dot com crash and Oil in 2002 when it was only $20 dollars, riding the trend to over $140 at its peak in June 2008.
In this interview, we discuss the current macro environment and the intricacies of his investment strategy including theories on Anomalies and Contagion plus the implications of the new world order and rethinking supply chains.
This is one of my favorite interviews. Kiril is one of the few great investors of our time.

jeudi 1 septembre 2022 • Duration 53:48

Today we revisit one of our most popular interviews to date.
In October 2020 we spoke to Chris Camillo, Founder of Dumb Money and an investor that had turned $20k into over $30 million.
Having led and founded a series of successful tech and software companies, in 2018 Chris - and his two friends Dave Hanson and Jordan McLain - gave up their day job to invest their own money, full-time. Not only have they already recorded extraordinary success, but Chris and co. have also pioneered a unique investment strategy, or what they call ‘Social Arbitrage’.
Chris hasn’t stopped there, Dumb Money have chronicled every high - and low - on their eponymous YouTube channel, now a mainstay among individual investors. The channel had 52,000 subscribers when we last spoke, now their audience is more than double that size.
Chris gives us a real insight into his strategy, but not only that, he highlights several burgeoning trends that on reflection almost 2 years later, prove to be prescient investment calls. Enjoy!

Edwin Dorsey - Shorting Bad Businesses, Investigating Care.com & Dorsey the ‘Anti-Zuckerberg’
Season 1 · Episode 94
jeudi 16 décembre 2021 • Duration 01:02:02
Edwin Dorsey is Founder of The Bear Cave, a short-focused newsletter that investigates and uncovers ‘Bad businesses’.
Edwin’s passion for investing began in third grade, and when his grandmother funded an E-Trade account for him whilst still in elementary school, he was hooked. Whilst at Stanford, Dorsey shone a spotlight on the nefarious Care.com, having instigated an international investigation, that culminated with a Wallstreet Journal front page, a C-suite overhaul, and IAC’s ultimate acquisition of Care.com in early 2020.
Edwin relives that story and many more like it, including the equally awe-inspiring tale of Root Insurance’s unsavoury practices, and subsequent demise. We discuss how to identify these bad businesses and what red flags investors can look out for, before concluding by talking Twitter, and Edwin’s super-fandom of both Dorsey and the company’s monetisation potential. Enjoy!
