Jens Nordvig - Japan’s Debt Crisis: A Global Economic Contagion?
Jens Nordvig is Founder & CEO of Exante Data and MarketReader. An alumnus of Goldman Sachs, Bridgewater Associates, and Nomura, we dig into Jens’ career to understand the world-renowned culture at Ray Dalio’s Bridgewater, and how those experiences have informed his unique investment approach.
Today’s focus is Japan, as the country’s finance minister warns Japan’s finances have become increasingly precarious, to an almost “unprecedented degree”, we first look back, to understand how the world’s third-largest economy has amassed the heaviest debt burden in the industrialised world.
Next, Jens’ covers Japan’s monetary policy, commenting on a historic move last December, and the BOJ’s decision to maintain the policy balance rate last week. Our focus on Japan ends with an explanation of the ripple effect this situation is having on equity and currency markets around the world. We finish with Jens’ ‘next big idea’, an underreported economic trend he reckons listeners should keep a close eye on, in 2023.

Michael Kao is CIO and Portfolio Manager of the Kao Family Office and is well-known for coining ‘the Dollar Wrecking Ball’, a metaphor to describe Dollar hegemony.
Having traded commodities at J.Aron and Goldman in the early 90s, Michael’s worldview embraces the significance of Oil. And subsequent experiences at Canyon Partners, a credit-oriented hedge fund, as well as the launch of his own investment firm, Akanthos Capital Management, leave Michael uniquely placed to provide a truly holistic view of what moves markets.
While the US Dollar has appreciated enormously against a basket of international currencies, from Pound Sterling to the Japanese Yen, I ask Michael if the Dollar is too strong for its own good, and if so, how long could this historic Dollar strength last? Enjoy!

Doomberg - Nord Stream Sabotage, Monetary Mayhem & the Green Chicken
Doomberg was founded in May last year, their mission, to highlight the fundamentals missing from today’s economic and policy decisions. Doomberg is now the most popular paid financial publication on Substack.
Doomberg provides in-depth analysis of financial and economic trends, and was one of the first publications to predict the supply chain crisis and the global energy crisis, amongst other era-defining events.
I met with Doomberg on October 4th to discuss the Nord stream sabotage and the wider question of global energy security. And after learning the origins of Doomberg’s mysterious green icon, we discussed the Bank of Japan’s decades-long battle with economic stagnation. And while few months were as consequential in monetary history than September, we finish by looking at UK fiscal policy, in the wake of unprecedented political upheaval. Enjoy!

John Barber - The World of Private Equity and What Makes A Good Company
This week we have John Barber on the show, Managing Partner at Cohesive Capital. Cohesive is a private equity co-investment firm that is exclusively focused on making direct investments alongside high-quality sponsors that are leading the transactions.
John has been in private equity for over 30 years so it’s safe to say he’s quite the expert. Prior to Cohesive, he co-founded City Private Equity where he managed approximately $13 Billion of capital and a team of 50 in New York and London.
This interview is a little different to normal as we’re discussing the private as opposed to public markets. Private markets still have the same goal of delivering a decent return on capital and John’s decades of experience investing in companies is eye-opening.
We dig into what makes a good company including the importance of a company's moat, what makes a good management team, and how to use incentives to drive value. We also discuss the fundamentals of private equity such as the stages of investment and how the industry has evolved over the years. Finally, we go into detail on what ingredients make someone a high achiever including highlighting some of John’s traits what he believes have contributed to his ongoing success.

Chris Camillo - Turning $20k Into $30 Million | Re-post
Today we revisit one of our most popular interviews to date. In October 2020 we spoke to Chris Camillo, Founder of Dumb Money and an investor that had turned $20k into over $30 million.
Having led and founded a series of successful tech and software companies, in 2018 Chris - and his two friends Dave Hanson and Jordan McLain - gave up their day job to invest their own money, full-time. Not only have they already recorded extraordinary success, but Chris and co. have also pioneered a unique investment strategy, or what they call ‘Social Arbitrage’.
Chris hasn’t stopped there, Dumb Money have chronicled every high - and low - on their eponymous YouTube channel, now a mainstay among individual investors. The channel had 52,000 subscribers when we last spoke, now their audience is more than double that size.
Chris gives us a real insight into his strategy, but not only that, he highlights several burgeoning trends that on reflection almost 2 years later, prove to be prescient investment calls. Enjoy!

Tobias Carlisle - Another lost decade of returns, Dominos (DPZ) & Stock Buybacks
This week I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Tobias Carlisle, founder and managing director of Acquirers Funds where he manages the firm's deep value strategy as a portfolio manager.
Their investment process begins with The Acquirer’s Multiple®, the measure used by activists and buyout firms to identify potential targets. They believe deeply undervalued and out-of-favor stocks offer asymmetric returns, with the potential for limited downside and a greater upside.
The Acquirers Fund's deep value strategy is available as an actively managed ETF, ticker ZIG on the NYSE.
Tobias is also the author of The Acquirer’s Multiple (2017), Concentrated Investing (2016), Deep Value (2014), and Quantitative Value (2012).
In this interview, we discuss another lost decade for market returns, Growth Vs Value, and why you should keep your eyes open for stock buybacks.

Kiril Sokoloff - Lessons From One Of The Greatest Investors Of Our Time
This week I have the great honor of welcoming the distinguished investor Kiril Sokoloff, CEO & Founder of 13D which he started back in 1983.
Kiril is an original thinker who has achieved phenomenal success over his decades of investing, often by going against the consensus. He is also a big advocate of thematic investing and has said “Over the last 40 years I don’t think we missed a single major technological transformation”.
In the late 1970s, he correctly anticipated an inflationary blow-off due to the fall of the Shah in Iran. In the early 1980s, he foresaw a period of disinflation and an ensuing takeover boom that nobody was prepared for. His firm became the expert in 13D filings and between 1983 and 1986, 175 of his firm’s recommendations were taken over. He then understood the great opportunity China in 1992 represented and co-founded the first pure Asian hedge fund during a period when the Hang Seng rose from 4900 to 12000. This was followed among over achievements by investing in internet and e-commerce companies in the 90s pre dot com crash and Oil in 2002 when it was only $20 dollars, riding the trend to over $140 at its peak in June 2008.
In this interview, we discuss the current macro environment and the intricacies of his investment strategy including theories on Anomalies and Contagion plus the implications of the new world order and rethinking supply chains.
This is one of my favorite interviews. Kiril is one of the few great investors of our time.

Jim Rogers - Investing Legend on "Worst Market Crash in My Lifetime" & Quantum's 4200% Return | Re-post
Today we revisit one of our most popular interviews to date.
In May 2020 we spoke to Jim Rogers, investing legend and co-founder of the Quantum Fund, which famously returned 4200% over just 10 years. Rogers revealed his long/short investment strategy that helped achieve that extraordinary success, and explains while he’s not a 'contrarian', he hunts for the best value investments from around the globe.
Jim made a prescient call regarding world debt, warning that central banks’ relentless money-printing was just delaying an inevitable “epic crash”; he identified extreme value in the travel and tourism sector, still heavily discounted due to COVID lockdowns; and Jim delivered fascinating insight regarding Russia, which of course at the time was yet to invade its neighbouring Ukraine.
The interview provides a captivating look-back at an investing legend’s geo-political predictions which, while only 2 years have passed, were made in an almost unrecognisable market environment. Enjoy!

28 Apr 2022
00:57:37
David Rosenberg is the President and Chief Economist & Strategist at Rosenberg Research, an economic and consulting firm he established in January 2020.
David’s CV boasts stints at Merrill Lynch, first as Chief Economist & Strategist for the company’s Canadian arm, before a promotion to Chief North American Economist. From 2009, David was Chief Economist & Strategist at Gluskin Sheff & Associates, pivoting from an institutional focus to cover the interests of high-net-worths’.
David gives us his outlook for Russia, and the likely repercussions of their invasion into Ukraine, and the resulting commodity supply squeeze. David gives us the odds of a recession in China, an economy marred by regulatory clampdowns and draconian Covid restrictions. And finally, we turn our minds to the US, contemplating the probability of recession there as the Fed attempt to stamp out rampant inflation. Enjoy!
