| Whispers of the Balkans: A Dance of Memory and Desire with Author Michele Levy | 25 Nov 2025 | 00:19:56 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michele Levy, author of the book Anna's Dance. Born a Yankee in Providence, Rhode Island, after seven years in Boston, she moved with her family to Wisconsin and Northern Virginia. Then she continued the southern trend with graduate studies in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and followed her Brooklyn-born husband even farther south, to New Orleans. Twenty-six years later, they traded the Superdome (seven minutes away from their house by car) for the North Carolina woods. This wandering stripped away her Boston accent, leaving a tendency to enunciate clearly that made New Orleanians think she was from England.
From the age of four she has played classical piano and read voraciously. But an exposure to Balkan dance in high school kindled what became a life-long passion. Still, her love for D. H. Lawrence and Dostoevsky led her to a PhD in Comparative Literature (English, French, Russian), and then to universities, where she taught, researched, and became a chair. Though she first published on Russian and European authors, her academic interest shifted to the Balkans. She wrote on Balkan history and literature and returned to the region (she’d first visited in 1968) in 2000, after the end of the Bosnian War, and 2002, invited by the Serbian Writers’ Association. By then she’d begun to write poetry and stories with Balkan settings. Anna’s Dance grew from her deep engagement with Balkan history and culture.
These days, she plays piano and reads, but mostly she writes. She’s working on a novel about a Bosnian asylee in New Orleans. Carolina’s nature nurtures her, she and her husband enjoy their three children and seven grandchildren, who have moved nearby, and she still does Balkan dance!
In my book review, I stated Anna's Dance: A Balkan Odyssey is a beautiful Jewish historical fiction novel. I once again found myself wondering what history I was taught in school because I knew next to nothing about Balkan history, even as it related to WWII. This book helped me fill in several gaps in my knowledge.
We meet Anna Rossi, an early 20's girl on a journey through the Balkan region. She starts out with one set of plans and moves to another, then another, and then another, finding herself learning more and more about prejudice and suffering. She sees a strong correlation to her own Jewish heritage - how minority suppression can lead to horrible end results, including violence.
As Anna travels, she grows from a silly girl to an experienced woman who knows her place in the world. Eventually, she learns to embrace her heritage and all that encompasses. I found the book to be quite beautiful in the telling and very relevant to our day.
Author Note: There are some sexual scenes - a couple that were a bit graphic for my taste. However, overall, these scenes were not gratuitous but helped the reader understand where Anna was in her journey.

| When America Turns on Its Own: A Dystopian Story Too Close to Home by Author MN Lee | 22 Nov 2025 | 00:24:56 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is MN Lee, author of the book Proof of Origin. MN Lee is a fiction author with a soft spot for oversteeped tea, tangled gardens, and stories that blur the line between the real and the uncanny. She writes across speculative and literary genres, weaving sharp prose, political unease, and moments of quiet magic into narratives that linger. She is hard at work on her next novel, The Ajumma Point, a feminist comedy about supernatural midlife transformation.
In my book review, I stated that Proof of Origin is a contemporary women's fiction that could be torn from today's headlines. This near-future story looks at politics gone awry, with the latest executive order calling for a lineage purity test. Anyone not 'American enough' is no longer welcome in the US and sent to camps that are far too reminiscent of the concentration camps of WWII.
We follow three characters - Jenny, born in the US to Vietnamese immigrant parents, Huy, Vietnamese but highly influential in the US government - until he's not, and Charlotte, a woman on the arm of an up and coming politician. What happens as their lives criss-cross and each has to confront difficult truths?
Lee's rendition of the rhetoric from the US government is very haunting - from the views on immigrants to their views on woman, birth control, family, books, and more. It is reminiscent of things one might hear on fringe-leaning social media posts, which makes her story even more chilling.
But we also see what happens to people who, once erased from their country, find a way to move forward and build again. Lee's ability to show resilience, and how it is forged, is beautiful, despite the circumstances.
I think this is a must-read book, if for no other reason than to help people understand what happens when you take something like patriotism and transform it into nationalism that has gone too far.

| From MySpace to TikTok: The Dark Evolution of Social Media with Author Tim O’Hearn | 23 Oct 2025 | 00:27:09 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tim O'Hearn, author of the book Framed. Tim O’Hearn is a software engineer who works in quantitative finance. He is also an entrepreneur and freelance writer.
As a sports journalist, he covered the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. As a prolific creator of user-generated content, he has written hundreds of book reviews and thousands of other entries such as restaurant reviews, product reviews, blog posts, and comments-section polemics.
Framed: A Villain's Perspective on Social Media is his first book.
In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: I read this book with a notebook by my side. There was so much information I felt like I was taking a full semester course. Framed: A Villain’s Perspective on Social Media was my daily tutorial and Tim O’Hearn was my professor.
He grew up with the internet using first, Myspace, then all the way thru Tiktok. And believes everything on the internet today can be traced back to Myspace. Because of that, O’Hearn feels he’s experienced being a puppeteer as well as a puppet. Facebook surpassed Myspace between 2009 and 2012. During that period search interest in both “hits” and “web counter” dropped off steeply.
Although he thinks the content about social media is misleading, this book is the best offering of coverage on Social Media Marketing. His tutorial explains how social media platforms have the same complicated relationship with spam bots that the U.S. Postal Service has with junk mail.
Before you reach the thirty pages of footnotes, you will learn about the “dead internet theory;” how external participants use software to wield godlike influence in the digital world; how he was accused of using, “What if I told you that I could get you more Instagram followers,” as a pick-up line to impress women; and, so much more.
This book cannot be read in one sitting. Especially if you want to retain all the opinions he has to offer. So read it once or read it several times. But read it.

| In the Trenches: Life as a COVID Frontline Nurse with Author Kim Sloan | 12 Dec 2024 | 00:29:40 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kim Sloan, author of the book Memoirs from the Frontlines. Kim, BSN, RN, Travel ICU nurse has been a nurse since 2008. She began working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2008 then pursued her Associate of Nursing degree from Central Ohio Technical College in 2013. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2015 from South University.
Throughout her career, her experience has primarily been in the critical care setting including emergency room (ER) and Intensive care units (ICU). She travels in both areas with ICU as her main passion. Her husband has been a nurse since 2001 working mostly in the intensive care units. He also obtained his BSN from South University in 2017. Their families, children, and grandchildren live in Ohio where Kim and her husband still maintain a home. They travel the country in their RV, living thirteen weeks at a time (the normal time frame for an assignment) as travel ICU nurses and have been doing so since 2017. They have traveled to and ridden their motorcycle in all fifty states, and they have worked nineteen different assignments at the time of this writing within thirteen different states. In her spare time, Kim enjoys riding motorcycles, and she is an avid chronological scrapbooker. Not to mention, her most enjoyable passion is spending time with her beautiful three granddaughters.
In my book review, I stated Memoirs from the Frontlines is a memoir written about her experiences as an ICU nurse during COVID - and not just any ICU nurse, but one battling the pandemic in one of the hotspots in the United States - a small town in Southern Georgia. This memoir is a hard look at the pandemic from the eyes of someone who saw the worst of the worst.
Her story covers the first two years of the pandemic and takes readers to four different hospitals. She lets us see things that were not shown on the news, hear the truth about the ravages of COVID, and begin to understand the horrific experience of helplessly watching people die one organ at a time.
As I read, I noted several shared experiences from one way lines in the grocery store to modified holidays with my family. But I also noted experiences that were uniquely those on the frontlines. And I completely understand her desire to save the rest of us from that miserable disease.
If you wonder if the lockdown was necessary, if the masks made sense, if the vaccine was/is helpful, or if anything you did during 2020 and 2021 helped anyone, I urge you to read this account - and then count yourself blessed to be here to read Kim's words.

| Healers of the Hearth: A Medieval Woman's Journey to Become a Physician with Author Lorraine Norwood | 10 Dec 2024 | 00:23:46 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lorraine Norwood, author of the book The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine is a former journalist and archaeologist who lives in Western North Carolina. Her short stories and essays have been published in Minerva Rising, New Southerner, Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 3, and Talking Writing, and have won awards in the Atlanta Writers Club contests. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society, Womens' Fiction Writers Association, and Author Accelerator. Her debut novel, The Solitary Sparrow, will be published in the spring of 2024. She is at work on the sequel, A Pelican in the Wilderness. The novels are part of a series set in 14th century England and France. Lorraine is also a certified Book Coach and developmental editor. She writes with an always-hungry yellow Lab, Sally, by her side and an aloof cat, Macavity, who sometimes deigns to be touched.
In my book review, I stated The Solitary Sparrow is an amazing historical fiction set in 14th century England and France. I loved the premise - a child, Meg, considered evil due to a birth deformity eventually finds her passion in medicine. But how will she move forward given her facial disfigurement, her family's station in life, and the fact that she is a woman?
Early in the book, Meg determines that she will become the first licensed female physician in English and hopes to provide care to women. She is tutored by a village healer, then a surgeon and his son, and even a school of medicine, though she must remain hidden from view because no females are allowed to attend. Despite it all, she thrives - gaining knowledge, wisdom, and even love.
If you love a story about persistence and courage, then you will love The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine's research is top-notch and her characters come to life on the page. It's a must read.

| AI and Writing: Unlocking Creativity or Threatening Authenticity with Author Mike Trigg | 07 Dec 2024 | 00:26:54 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mike Trigg, author of the book Burner. Mike is here today to chat with us about AI and how this technology will affect authors. Mike Trigg was born in Kentucky and raised in Wisconsin. He earned a BA from Northwestern University and an MBA from University of California, Berkeley. Before becoming a novelist, Trigg had a twenty-five-year career in Silicon Valley https://www.linkedin.com/in/triggmike/ as a founder, executive, and investor in dozens of venture-funded technology start-ups. Trigg’s first novel, BIT FLIP, was released in August 2022 to critical acclaim, with 5-star reviews from Foreword, IndieReader, and the Manhattan Book Review, and lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle as a “twisty, acerbic corporate thriller” set in Silicon Valley. His second novel, BURNER, comes out April 16, 2024. Billed as a "fascinating thriller in which an online movement swallows up the person who started it" by Foreword Clarion Reviews, the novel dives headfirst into political disinformation, toxic internet subcultures, and our need for belonging and purpose in an age of distorted online personas. Trigg has been a contributor to TechCrunch, Entrepreneur, Fast Company and Literary Hub and featured in dozens of media articles and interviews. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, with his wife and two sons. | Whale Songs and Wildflowers: Trapped in the Dark with Author Cynthia Reeves | 03 Dec 2024 | 00:33:23
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cynthia Reeves, author of the book The Last Whaler. Cynthia Reeves is the author of three books of fiction: the Arctic novel The Last Whaler; the novel in stories Falling Through the New World, winner of Gold Wake Press’s Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands, winner of Miami University Press’s Novella Prize. Her short stories, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was featured in If the Storm Clears, an anthology that concerns the sublime in the natural world. Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard’s western shores, as well as three subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen and a trip around Iceland’s Ring Road, that have inspired her writing since then. Cynthia earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College and taught creative writing at Bryn Mawr and Rosemont Colleges. Find out more at cynthiareeveswriter.com. In my book review, I stated The Last Whaler is a historical fiction that looks at the will to survive in the harshest circumstances. We follow Astrid through her journal entries, while we follow her husband, Tor, through his journal entries ten years later. The back and forth allows the reader to see Astrid struggles in real time as well as Tor's reflections - and all the things he missed. Astrid is strong-willed and vibrant. She is educated and dedicated. She wants - very much - to move on beyond a tragedy. A summer spent with her husband, a whaler, on a remote island, seems to be the ticket. She will revive her relationship. She will study the flora. She will find forgiveness for herself. Except, the Arctic has other ideas. This story, beautifully told, explores mental illness, religious faith, man's impact on the environment, and the solace of storytelling. You won't want to miss it. | Whispers from Beyond: Ghosts Really Do Exist? With Author Jeff Giles | 30 Nov 2024 | 00:24:24
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jeff Giles, author of the book Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane.
Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. When Jeff isn't working on his next project, he's probably either running off yesterday's calories or playing guitar (badly).
Jeff lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, and a pair of dogs.
In my book review, I stated Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is a humorous fantasy - another combination I had never read but truly enjoyed. It was sort of Harry Potter "esque" with far more tongue-in-cheek references and great bits of history trivia thrown in.
The story starts with Langley's death - he is crushed by a falling piano. Langley spent his entire life debunking the idea of ghosts, magic, and anything you couldn't see with your own eyes or prove with science. However, when he becomes a ghost, he realizes he's been wrong.
Before he can wrap his mind around his error, he finds himself on a quest to save mankind by finding his childhood hero - the magician who failed and thrust Langley toward his lifelong obsession of proving magic doesn't exist.
This dual timeline story moves quickly, has great characters, and lots of laughs. However, it also causes the reader to think about what is important in life and what holds the universe together. I highly recommend this book.

| A Curator’s Journey: A Memoir of a Colorful Life with Author Jack | 26 Nov 2024 | 00:26:04 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jack Maher, author of the book Poppy. Jack is a proud fifth generation Colorado native and grandson of Eric Douglas. Poppy is his first novel. A four-time National Television Arts & Sciences Heartland Chapter Emmy winner, he worked at KUSA-TV in Denver as a 9NEWS Multimedia Journalist and Executive Producer.
In my book review, I stated Poppy: A Novel About A Colorful Colorado Life is a family memoir written about Poppy by his grandson, Jack. I love family history, and I love it when a child or grandchild feels that their progenitors are worthy of recall.
Eric Douglas's life, known affectionately as Poppy, is incredible. Through him, we learn about Native Americans in and around Colorado, especially their art and the processes (clay, paint, beadwork, and more) passed on through the generations. We watch Poppy push Native American art to the forefront in Denver, but also in New York City, and San Francisco. We learn of his new ways to display art, his 'fashion shows' highlighting textile art, and his work to provide live demonstrations.
Poppy lived an unusual life that often took him from his family. But still, his family meant everything to him. I loved learning about Poppy, and I think you will, too!

| From Alaska to Manhattan: Unraveling the Secret Past with Author Tina Hogan Grant | 23 Nov 2024 | 00:22:46 | |
Carole O’Neill’s (Guest Host) guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tina Hogan Grant, author of the book Secrets Told. A native of England, she feels very lucky to have spent her childhood and adolescent years in a small quaint Yorkshire town called Ilkley, where many days were spent roaming the Yorkshire moors, climbing the Cow & Calf Rocks, swimming in the River Wharfe and playing “Conkers” and “Jacks” with schoolmates.
She is the youngest daughter of famed science-fiction author James P. Hogan who sadly passed away before her first book was published. She thanks her dad for sharing his passion for books and writing with her. Today she is living that passion with hopes of passing it on to her children and grandkids.
In Carol’s book review, I stated As I read the beginning chapters of Secrets Told by Tina Hogan Grant, I was certain her main character was a carbon copy of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. Patricia Levenick’s complete focus on her job (this one as the head of her own law firm in Manhattan) reminded me of how everyone at the workplace feared upsetting their workaholic boss. Patricia even had two daughters, like Miranda. Ones she kept busy with ballet lessons, horseback riding lessons and any other activity that would not interfere with the needs of her law firm. I knew where this story was going.
Then suddenly, the twist. Patricia’s reaction to the letter she receives from a lawyer back in her hometown, changes everything. Initially, she was not going to let confronting her past change her lifestyle, or even slow it down long enough to admit she left a very different existence far from the hustle and bustle of New York City.
With the insistence of her ex-husband, Bryce, that their daughters have a right to know who she really is, she agrees to take the family back long enough to satisfy his curiosity about what her childhood was really like. Their surprising knowledge of her life on the water and the discovery of a grandfather they never knew they had, brings the entire family to a new high.
Alaska becomes its own character as they explore the amazing countryside and uncover the real Pattie. Grant reveals a memorable picture of the love of fishing in a nearly perfect world.
You should spend the time to open these pages and enjoy this story.

| Unmasked: An FBI Agent’s Hunt for a Shapeshifter with Author D Werkmeister | 19 Nov 2024 | 00:30:32 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is D Werkmeister, author of the book Volk. Born and raised in Nebraska, Darin Werkmeister now lives outside of Philadelphia PA, where he was an FBI street agent for 21 years. During that time, he investigated White Collar Crime, Organized Crime, Money Laundering, and Domestic Terrorism. While in Philadelphia, he was an eight-year member of the FBI SWAT team. Prior to the FBI he was a Marine Corps officer. VOLK is his first novel.
In my book review, I stated Volk is an FBI thriller with a shapeshifter. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure what I would think about this novel and told Darin that I might not be his audience - werewolves are just not my thing. However, his characters are so strong and engaging, and the storyline so realistic (despite the werewolves), that I couldn't put it down.
Terri Watson is the main FBI agent. She is working the case of her career when she sees the beast. But who can she tell? Imagine seeing a werewolf and trying to explain that to your boss. Instead, Terri takes matters into her own hands, and the result is ... let's just say a great twist to the normal FBI thriller story!
I enjoyed that we see things from Terri's point of view as well as the wolf's. And Darin made it easy by making all of the wolf's thoughts in first person, present tense. It was rather spooky to be in the head of a werewolf, but this change in POV and tense really added to the story.
If you love a good thriller/suspense, even if you don't normally go for shapeshifters, I think you'll love this book. I know I did!

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Francine Pozner-Ehrenberg, author of the book America's Candidate. Francine is an attorney and the owner of Ehrenberg & Associates Consulting Group. She is the author of the suspense novel, “America’s Candidate,” which is available on Amazon.
Francine was a Major in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General's Corp. serving for over 12 years. During a deployment to Albania in the war-stricken Balkans, as part of Operation Cornerstone, she served as the advisory liaison between civilian officials and multinational military forces involved with the operation.
Ehrenberg graduated from Rutgers Law School and is also a graduate of the Civil Affairs Advanced Course at the JFK Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg. She has experience in Civil-Military Operations (CMO) and extensive work as a liaison between civil and military authorities in foreign international affairs.
Additionally, she was an Assistant Prosecutor in Bergen County, NJ. She has handled numerous high-level, complicated Major Financial Crimes, Securities Fraud, Money Laundering, Medicaid Fraud, Health Care Fraud and Mortgage Fraud cases.
In her book review, Tina Hogan Grant, guest-host for Online for Authors stated:
America’s Candidate was an enjoyable read written from multiple points of view which I liked. Each character was well defined and had their own unique voice.
I found the synopsis for this book intriguing and wanted to know if Annie and Amir's idea would be successful. What I didn't expect, were the many twists and surprises along the way which added to the story.
This was the author's debut novel and I think she did extremely well. I'm looking forward to her next one.

| Threads of Survival A Holocaust Family Memoir Across Generations by Author Willie Handler | 14 Nov 2024 | 00:22:33 | |
Willie Handler, author of the book Out from the Shadows. Willie was a satirist well before he became a novelist. Hailing from Canada, where self-deprecating humor is part of the national character, he finds targets for his humor everywhere. His targets include friends, family, co-workers, politicians, farmers, subway passengers, bureaucrats, telemarketers, Martians and his barber, Vince. His first book, The Road Ahead, is a biting political satire. Book two, Loved Mars Hated The Food, is a hilarious space adventure populated with aliens and bots. With his most recent novel, he has crossed over to the world of black comedy.
Both of his parents are Holocaust survivors. In 2020, while struggling with the effects of the pandemic lockdown, he decided he needed to know what happened to them during WWII. Thus began a journey into his family’s past, eventually revealing their extraordinary survival and painful losses. Their story and his memoir published late in 2024.
In my book review, I stated Out from the Shadows: Growing up with Holocaust Survivor Parents is a Holocaust memoir that will leave you looking at events in our world today differently than when you began. Both of Willie's parents were Holocaust survivors who made it through the war, then on to Israel, before finally settling in Canada. However, the years of deprivation scarred his parents, who in turn left scars on their three children.
This memoir looks deeply at his parents, Shifra and Elija. What was life like before the Holocaust in Poland and Romania? Once the pogroms began? Once extermination was the goal? Once the war was over? What was it like to start over again - and then again? Most importantly, how does what happened to you in the past shape your future - and the futures of those who follow behind.
Additionally, Willie takes an intense look at his own life as a child and now. His research helped him to understand his parents, and the things they said and did. It also helped him understand his own personality and issues.
Finally, Willie asks readers to look at the world today and realize that another holocaust could happen. In fact, a quick look at what is happening in Israel makes one wonder if it hasn't already started.
Very intense memoir/biography that will force you to look deeply. This is a must-read and should be on everyone's list.

| When the Horsemen Return: Love and Survival in a Broken World with Author JF Monroe | 21 Oct 2025 | 00:20:32 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is JF Monroe, author of the book The Legendary Guardians: Reunions. When reality isn't enough, you build your universe. That's precisely what J.F. Monroe did with the Legacy of the Four trilogy, creating a world where ancient powers walk among us and destiny can be rewritten by the courage of the human heart.
A lifelong devotee of fantasy fiction, Monroe crafts stories that blend epic adventure with deeply personal journeys. Her writing draws inspiration from the character-driven narratives of "The Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter," the high stakes of "The Hunger Games," and the intricate plotting of Christopher Nolan's films. These influences combine in her work to create stories where even the most extraordinary characters feel remarkably real.
At the heart of Monroe's storytelling philosophy lies a simple truth: the most powerful magic comes from human connection. Her characters—whether they're vessels for ancient powers or loyal companions with four legs—face struggles that resonate with readers long after they turn the last page. She crafts protagonists who aren't just extraordinary in their abilities but also in their capacity for growth, love, and sacrifice.
When not weaving tales of legendary guardians and supernatural realms, Monroe can be found immersed in the stories that fuel her imagination—curled up with a good book and a steaming cup of coffee, embarking on movie marathons, or exploring virtual worlds through video games. These moments of escape and adventure inspire new stories and new worlds for readers to discover.
In my book review, I stated The Legendary Guardians: Reunions is a fantasy. I enjoyed the storyline and would have given it more stars if it weren't for the multitude of gratuitous explicit scenes. If you don't mind spice or are willing to skip the scenes, you'll find the story has a lot of depth.
We learn early on that the human race is being held together by a treaty that keeps demons, angels, and the seven deadly sins in check. The enforcers of the treaty are the four horsemen. However, the horsemen have to choose human hosts during an event called the crucible.
Both Shade and Theo, teenagers in love, are chosen to participate in the crucible - and Theo is chosen as a horseman, tearing the young lovers brutally apart. Several years go by, but Shade can't move on with her life. Then, strange things begin to happen - things that suggest the treaty is no longer in effect.
What will this mean for Shade? For Theo? For the world? This book is fast-paced and leaves you wanting the next installment.
Content note: There are some rather detailed sex scenes. I chose to skip them and doing so did not change the book's narrative.

| Voice of Resilience: A Jewish Hungarian's Holocaust Journey with Author Robert J Wolf | 12 Nov 2024 | 00:27:37 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert J Wolf, author of the book Not a Real Enemy. Robert is a neuroradiologist who attended the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his training at Brown and Yale Universities. He grew up in a suburb of Detroit as the only child of Ervin and Judit Wolf. Their stories of their escape from communist Hungary, and his father’s tragic history of escaping the Nazis twice but losing his own parents, inspired Robert to document his parents’ tales and share those stories with Jewish groups, history aficionados, and biography lovers throughout the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. In Not a Real Enemy Robert shares his family saga—and the forgotten history of the nearly half million Hungarian Jews who were deported and killed during the Holocaust—through an epic and inspiring tale of daring escapes, terrifying oppression, tragedy, and triumph.
In my book review, I stated 'Not A Real Enemy: The True Story of a Hungarian Jewish Man’s Fight for Freedom is an amazing family Holocaust memoir that reads more like a novel. I was brought into the story through the main character, Ervin Wolf, the father of the author - and I turned the pages as quickly as I could until I reached the end.
Ervin begins life as a doctor's son and ends life as a doctor in the United States. Everything in between shows the reader the brutalities of the Nazi regime and then the Soviet communists who came after. The story left me wondering if I would have survived? If I would have had the gumption to escape not once, not twice, but three times? It showed me that freedom is something we should value beyond almost everything else.
History wants to bury the ugliness that was the Holocaust. Thankfully, memoirs like this and the bravery of authors like Robert make that impossible. Well done.

| Unknown Destiny: The Journey of a Reluctant Princess with Author Karina Kantas | 05 Nov 2024 | 00:24:02 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Karina Kantas, author of the book Illusional Reality (Duology). Karina is the bestselling author of 14 titles covering most fiction genres, including thriller novels and young adult fiction, many of which have won awards. She’s also an award-winning filmmaker and has won numerous awards for her documentary and short films at International Film Festivals. (You can find them in the Trophy Room.) She’s also a BookTuber, podcaster and radio host and runs Author Assist to help independent authors with promoting and marketing their books.
In my book review, I stated Illusional Reality (Duology) is the two-book fantasy romance series. Both books start on earth but quickly take us to an enchanted realm in which Becky is known as Thya and happens to be a princess. Her parents, the rulers at her birth, whisked her away to earth to keep her safe. But now it is time for her to return and save Tsinia from the evil prince bent on domination.
Becky turned Thya has to figure out a new world, the laws that govern the land, an unusual way of speaking, and her own magical abilities - plus her attraction to someone she is forbidden to love. The book moves quickly and kept me guessing at what would happen next. And although the ending of book two (The Quest) wrapped up nicely, Karina left room for more. Who knows! There could be a book three in the future!

| Ghostly Secrets: See What Paranormal Investigators Uncover with Authors RC and JP Carter | 29 Oct 2024 | 01:05:27 | |
My guests today on the Online for Authors podcast are RC and JP Carter, author of the book A Chance of a Ghost. RC and JP aka Rob and Joan, are hosts of Meet the Author Podcast on WLFE-db Radio and WDJY FM Radio (Atlanta). They are cohosts of Haunted Campfire Tales Podcast WLFE-db Radio. Both podcasts stream LIVE on Youtube, Facebook and LinkedIn. Rob and Joan publicize other indie authors on their website. Rob and Joan are members of the Underground Authors writing group and the authors of Book 23 in the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles - A Chance of a Ghost.
On a personal note, they are the proud parents of six children, grandparents of fourteen grandchildren and great grandparents of one great granddaughter. Their household is run by a nine and a half pound Papillon/Shih Tzu rescue dog. They travel the country with their dog Missy in their travel trailer. Missy is a Certified B.A.R.K. Ranger, having completed a hiking trail at Mt Rushmore.
In my book review, I stated A Chance of a Ghost is a paranormal mystery and is part of the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles. Although I'm not usually a ghost-story reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned quite a lot in the process.
You see, RC and JP are not just authors and podcast hosts, they are also paranormal investigators. This story shows what paranormal investigators do, the type of equipment they use, and the types of situations they run into. It also shows skepticism from those who realize what they are up to, which I found refreshing since I, too, am a skeptic when it comes to haunted houses. Yet, despite my skepticism, I have seen and felt things I cannot explain.
The characters, Mike and Maureen, are a lovable couple trying to help their cousins uncover the secrets of the old mansion they purchased. Plus, Mike also receives a premonition about a local man's murder. Will they discover a ghost? Can they help the ghost move on without marring their cousins' reputations? Will they be able to stop a murder before it happens?
This is a fun, quick read and is a great ghost story, especially for those who may not be believers!

| The Quad Squad: A Dramedy of Friendship and Healing with Author Donna Levin | 26 Oct 2024 | 00:24:01 | |
Today, the Online for Authors podcast Guest Host Tina Hogan Grant chats Donna Levin, author of the book The Talking Stick. Donna’s work is included in Boston University’s Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center and in the California State Library’s collection of California novels. She is the author of Extraordinary Means, California Street, There’s More Than One Way Home, and He Could Be Another Bill Gates, as well as her latest novel, The Talking Stick, a dramedy about four women who discover that some of their most-cherished memories are romanticized versions of the truth. In addition to novels, Donna has published two books about writing: Get that Novel Started and Get that Novel Written, both with Writer’s Digest Books.
Donna has taught fiction writing for three decades, most notably at the University of California Extension at Berkeley, where she led the novel writing workshop. She has also been a frequent guest at writers’ conferences, including the San Francisco Writers’ Conference and the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. She lives in San Francisco.
In her book review, Tina stated that this is a Joyful and at times humorous read that had me laughing out loud. After Hunter loses her cheating husband to her so-called friend, Angelica. Hunter decides to start a support group and places flyers around her neighborhood. I enjoyed reading how Danika, Alicia, and Penelope stumbled on the flyer and how we were introduced to the characters. I felt like I was sitting in on their meetings, learning of their history, struggles, and challenges. All were unique and over time their friendship grew and by the end of the book they had become a sisterhood. The storyline kept me engaged and many women will relate to one of the women's stories. Well written with a few surprises. A book I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

| Unmasking Chaos: Murder in the Heart of a Race Riot with Author Carla Damron | 22 Oct 2024 | 00:24:25 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Carla Damron , author of the book Justice Be Done. Carla holds an MSW and an MFA. Her careers of social worker and writer are intricately intertwined; all of her novels explore social issues like addiction, homelessness, and mental illness. She works part-time with Communities in Schools and volunteers with the League of Women Voters, Sisters in Crime- Palmetto Chapter (President), and Mutual Aid Midlands.
Carla is a social worker, advocate and author whose last novel, The Stone Necklace (about grief and addiction) won the 2017 Women’s Fiction Writers Association Star Award for Best Novel and was selected the One Community Read for Columbia SC. In her new novel, The Orchid Tattoo, Carla uses crime fiction to delve into the complex topic of human trafficking, a horrific crime affecting thousands of victims around the world—and in her native South Carolina. She hopes the novel will both entertain and educate her readers. She is also the author of the Caleb Knowles mystery novels and has published numerous short stories, essays, and op-eds.
Carla is a South Carolina native. Born in Sumter, she currently lives outside of Columbia with her husband, Jim Hussey, and their blended family of assorted animals.
In my book review, I stated Justice Be Done is a contemporary suspense novel set in Columbia, South Carolina. The main character, Caleb Knowles, is a social worker who often consults with criminals and suspects for the police department. This time, the criminal is a teenager, and the crime stems from racial mistreatment. The more Caleb looks, the more he finds. Discrimination in the community. Discrimination in the police force. Discrimination among the political leaders. Finally, the discrimination touches his own family. Will he be able to save his client? Can he save others? Or will hatred and violence ultimately win? This is a 'can't put down' read!

| Behind the Facade: Unraveling the Secrets That Bond Us with Author Christine Gunderson | 19 Oct 2024 | 00:18:28 | |
Carole O’Neill’s guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Christine Gunderson, author of the book Friends with Secrets, which is Christine’s debut novel. She wrote Friends with Secrets in her minivan in the school pick up line, at piano lessons, during drama rehearsals, at swim team practice, basketball practice, crew practice, and in lots of other unglamourous and uncomfortable places where only a parent who writes would write.
Like all writers, she started life as a reader. She was born and raised on a fourth-generation family farm in rural North Dakota where she devoured Laura Ingalls Wilder books in her very own little house on the prairie. She also burned holes in her chenille bedspread while attempting to read Trixie Belden books under the covers when she was supposed to be asleep. During these formative years growing up on the farm, she learned to haul grain, drive a combine, and pick rocks, skills that have yet to be useful later in life. Growing up on the prairie fifty miles from the nearest McDonalds has also given her an aversion to trees, and lifelong craving for wide open spaces.
She eventually left the farm to attend college and seek her fortune. She pursued the kind of jobs where one gets paid to talk and write and no one cares that she failed algebra. She worked as television anchor and reporter and a Capitol Hill press secretary, then left it all behind to stay home with her children, where algebra continues to baffle her all these years later. She currently lives in the Washington D.C. suburbs with her three children, Star the Wonder Dog, and a very patient husband.
When not writing, she is sailing the Chesapeake Bay with her family, playing Star Wars monopoly, re-reading Jane Austen novels or unloading the dishwasher.
In Carole’s book review, she stated that women have often been told, “You can have it all - just not at the same time.” Christine proves that theory wrong in her debut novel, Friends with Secrets.
Nikki and Ainsley are two modern women on opposite ends of the motherhood spectrum. Nikki has just been told she’s been replaced at her television station as their anchor, while she spends most of her maternity leave struggling to convince her newborn son that her breast milk will really satisfy him, while her three older children destroy the aisles of the grocery store playing baby food pong down aisle five.
Ainsley has no problem convincing her children of anything because she has the help of a nanny, housekeeper, cook, clothing designer and a husband with more money than God, who is running for congress.
How these two women become a force to reckon with is what keeps you laughing out loud from the beginning. The secrets they share require the skills of both women to unravel. When they discover a way to expose the truth of Ainsley’s past life that threatens her husband’s future, you can’t turn the pages fast enough to find out if they’re right.
Gunderson’s research comes from her real-life experience in television, proving you can balance motherhood, friendship, and career. This novel is a must read.

| Surviving the Impossible: The Harrowing Tale of Flight 571 with Author John Guiver | 15 Oct 2024 | 00:26:57 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is John Guiver, author of the book To Play the Game. John’s lifetime interest in the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster led him to travel to the site of the accident in January 2013 in the company of one of the sixteen survivors, Eduardo Strauch. Through him, John met many others connected to the story, including survivors Pedro Algorta and Coche Inciarte, whose memoirs he translated.
Over the years, he has conducted numerous interviews within the close-knit passenger community, and has delved deeply into various archives, including that of Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling 1974 account of the tragedy, Alive. The detailed information he amassed persuaded him to write a comprehensive history of this iconic event.
More recently, he was a guest expert on the May 2023 ABC 20/20 documentary "Prisoners of the Snow", a production for which his book was a major source.
In my book review, I stated To Play the Game is the story of Flight 571. You may remember hearing about the plane that went down full of rugby players. The plane crashed, and it took ten weeks before they were found. A famous book, Alive, talks in detail about those ten weeks, but John's story does even more.
First, he doesn't focus only on the survivors. Instead, he also tells the story of every person on the plane, so we understand why they were on the plane and what their life was like before the crash. Additionally, John spends a lot of time setting up the world view of the passengers, including their hometowns, occupations, education, and even love lives. Finally, John looks at the many possible causes of the accident. Each of these pieces makes this book a very comprehensive look at Flight 571 and all who were affected by the tragedy.

| Navigating the Job Jungle: 10 Essential Rules with Author Kathleen Goggin | 12 Oct 2024 | 00:23:04 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kathleen Goggin, author of the book 10 Little Rules When Good Jobs Go Bad. Writer, editor and author, Kate has always been interested in sharing best practices in business and in life. Disappointed there were no manuals to follow, she often created those for herself, and then shared them to help others. “10 Little Rules When Good Jobs Go Bad: Reclaim Your Power at Work and in Life” is her latest project and is for anyone facing difficult decisions in their job journey.
A former “Family Matters” newspaper columnist, Kate has also published “The Art of International Living,” a newsletter for successful overseas relocation, and “Backpack Kids: The Planning Safety Checklist for Overseas Travel,” an iPhone app for parents, teachers, and volunteer leaders planning international travel for school-age children.
She is a certified technical writer and a former spokesperson. Her former clients include the US State Department, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Federal Aviation Administration. She lives in Leesburg, VA.
In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules When Good Jobs Go Bad takes a hard look at changing jobs, what it looks like, what it means, and when you might consider the switch. I love how Kathleen seasons the book with her work history story, allowing us a peek into her decisions, both good and not so good.
My favorite rule was "Leverage Boredom." When Kate's job no longer challenged her, she became bored. However, rather than just accept boredom, or spend time scrolling social media reels, she took a technical writing certification program. As Kate states, "I always advise people they should learn something new if their job search is in neutral." This certification paved the way for the next stepping stone in her career.
As a semi-retired author, I wish I had this book earlier in life. Knowing that, I think I'll buy several copies for my children in hopes of helping them navigate this area of their life. Well-done, Kathleen!

| Uncovering Secrets: A Family Cape Cod Vacation Unraveled with Author Tess Callahan | 10 Oct 2024 | 00:28:27 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tess Callahan, author of the book Dawnland. Tess Callahan is also the author of the novel April & Oliver. Her essays and stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Writer’s Digest, National Public Radio, Agni, Narrative Magazine, AWP Notebook, Newsday, The Common, the Best American Poetry blog, and elsewhere. Her TEDx talk on creativity is titled, “The Love Affair Between Creativity & Constraint.” Tess is a graduate of Boston College and Bennington College Writing Seminars and teaches creative writing and meditation. She curates Muse-feed.com, a toolbox for aspiring writers. A dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, she lives in Cape Cod and Northern New Jersey with her family and number one life coach, her dog.
In my book review, I stated Dawnland is a contemporary family life fiction filled to the brim with family secrets and misunderstandings.
April has been friends with brothers Allen and Oliver since childhood. Al was bold, athletic, and always pushing boundaries. Oliver was quiet, studious, and always towing the line. April came from a bad home and though she loved Oliver, never felt she deserved him - even after they share their love for one another while in Ireland. In the end, April chooses Al, making the next fifteen years difficult, at best.
The main portion of the story takes place during a one-week summer vacation on the Cape - something the family has done for years. Only this time, the pretense unravels and secrets come roaring out. The question is, who will survive unscathed when the dust settles?
I loved this story and can't get April, Al, Meredith, Oliver, Hal, Beryl, and the children out of my mind. It's a great read.

| Unseen Patients: A Thriller of Spirits and Secrets with Author Scott Eveloff | 18 Oct 2025 | 00:23:17 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Eveloff, author of the book Do Not Resuscitate. Scott Eveloff, MD is a physician living in Overland Park Kansas, having served the medical needs of far-flung towns in rural Missouri for greater than thirty years while actively publishing his perspectives on ethics in medicine. He has published extensively in the medical literature, having authored or co-authored 24 articles and book chapters. He has also authored and published a book detailing the first tumultuous years of his son’s life, Both Sides of The White Coat (People With Disabilities Press, 2000, 127 pages). Such extraordinary experiences as both a physician and parent of a medically complex child have been picked up and published by media as distant as England. His work has also earned him appearances on ABC’s 20/20 Medical Mysteries, ABC News Nightline, and on the Dr. Oz show. Dr Eveloff has remained a passionate advocate for the disabled. Many characters in his novels were inspired by his son’s life and attitude, and are tributes to the dignity that the disabled deserve but often do not receive.
Besides his passion for patient advocacy and compassion in today’s intimidating medical world, Dr. Eveloff’s interests include World War II, the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, and the supernatural. Out of such varied interests have sprung two books, Do Not Resuscitate (Black Rose Writing) and The Golem’s Holocaust (Histria Books), the latter fiction reimagining strange coincidences of history by combining actual events with a mythological creature. Although Dr. Eveloff has indulged his love of writing with a focus on writing outside of medical subject matter, he also continues to submit and publish articles on the state of medicine and patient care.
In my book review, I stated Do Not Resuscitate is an intense medical thriller. We meet Harry, an intern who finds himself on the wrong side of deaths that appear to be medical errors - his medical errors. He believes he may be a witness to an angel of death and suspects his resident. But everything turns sideways when he begins hearing and seeing the dead.
In addition to dealing with his own grief from the loss of his newborn child, his wife's grief, and the long hours of being an intern, Harry wonders if he is losing his mind. After meeting an elderly doctor, he realizes he has stumbled into something otherworldly - and it will be up to him to save innocent patients - and even those he loves.
Will he be able to get others to believe that the dead are stealing bodies by using modern resuscitation techniques? More importantly, will he be able to create a plan to stop the madness?
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat - and is a must read for any medical thriller enthusiast!

| Behind the Lens: Caught in a Dictator's Trap with Author Kathryn Dodson | 08 Oct 2024 | 00:22:49 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kathryn Dodson, author of the book Portrait of Deception. Kathryn writes about women who have to become their own heroes - whether they're solving a crime or figuring out the next phase of their lives. She grew up writing and riding horses in far West Texas. She graduated from SMU in English/Creative Writing and went on to get an MBA from Thunderbird and a PhD from Clemson. Now she spends her days writing about women who become their own heroes. She has worked on both sides of the US/Mexico border and has held jobs with governments, chambers of commerce, and other businesses. Kathryn loves to travel and has visited 30 countries and 44 states. This inspires her novels about interesting women in fascinating places. Originally from Texas, Kathryn had the good fortune to live in Spain, Mexico, Tanzania, and several U.S. states, and the good sense to end up in Carlsbad, California. She loves travel, fiery food, hanging out with the neighbors in the front yard on Friday evenings, and reading. In my book review, I stated Portrait of Deception is a wonderful suspense novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Margo, a photographer on her way to fame, soon finds herself entrenched in a madman's attempt to take over first his country and then those countries around him. Although she's hired to take photos of the despot, she soon learns that his plan includes owning her. Unless she can escape, she'll never leave the grounds - at least not alive. Unfortunately, Margo is not completely innocent. Can she figure out how to get free? Save her family and friends? Find a new path forward? This is a gritty story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But it is also character-driven enough that you cheer Margo as she learns lessons about herself and her past and makes decisions for a better future. | Unlikely Alliances: A Tale of Friendship and Intrigue with Author Pamela Stockwell | 01 Oct 2024 | 00:23:40
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Stockwell, author of the book The Tender Silver Stars. Award-winning author Pamela Stockwell was born in Texas and raised in South Carolina. In between, she lived in the Philippines and, along with her big sister, became fluent in Tagalog name-calling. She abandoned her foreign language studies at age five and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina. Pamela lives with her husband in Central New Jersey. She has three children in various stages of young adulthood, one dog, and too many cats. She is the author of A Boundless Place and The Tender Silver Stars, which have both garnered awards. Her poetry and creative nonfiction have appeared in several online literary journals and anthologies. In my book review, I stated The Tender Silver is a historical fiction, though I really hate saying the 1970s are historical because it makes me feel old. The novel is set in South Carolina, a perfect setting for the issues of the times. Triss is a rich, white girl who isn't allowed to follow in the family business because women shouldn't be lawyers - at least according to her grandfather, the man with the purse strings. Everlove is a working-class black girl who, despite the civil rights movement, can't shop in certain grocery stores let alone pursue her dreams. What happens when the two become friends - especially when they learn of a lawyer with shady real estate dealings as well as a shady past? And let's not forget to throw in a cast of wonderful neighbors! I enjoyed this character-driven novel - and I think you will, too. | Conquer Your Fear of Public Speaking: 10 Simple Rules with Author Frank Winters | 28 Sep 2024 | 00:25:50
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Frank Winters, author of the book 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story. A father of two fantastic men, public speaker, geographer, and explorer, Frank Winters was intrigued and motivated by a random fact: one of the things he loves the most – public speaking – is the thing most feared by many. His work (as Geographic Information Officer of NYS, President of the National States Geographic Information Council and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force) gives Frank a breadth of professional experiences to draw from. Outside of work, Frank coached a youth mountain bike race team to a state championship and served for more than two decades as President of a non-profit ski area. Paying back a lifelong debt to the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as Section Director for the National Camp School wilderness guide program. A recent annual tradition for Frank and his oldest son is racing the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story explores his rules for public speaking. However, these rules will help more than those speaking behind a podium. Do you want to be a better communicator with those you love? Do you want to provide a legacy of stories to your children? Do you want to connect more over coffee and bagels? Then 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story is the right book for you. Not only does Frank share his rules, but he provides notebooking pages so you can create your own rules around storytelling. My favorite rule is #6 - Think Beyond the Elevator Pitch. Frank believes that if you have something important to say, you should be able to adjust it to the time given to you. If you only have 7 seconds, what would you say? What about two minutes? What about twenty? By thinking of our stories this way, we can learn what parts are the most important and the most intriguing. I will definitely be using this idea in my own speaking! I highly recommend this 10 Little Rules book. | Utopian Betrayal: A Techno-Thriller Murder Unraveled with Author Joseph Rein | 24 Sep 2024 | 00:30:23
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joseph Rein, author of the book Youtopia. Joseph is the author of the Youtopia series (Youtopia, Youtopia Reborn, Youtopia Infinity). His short story collection Roads without Houses was nominated for numerous literary prizes. His short fiction has appeared in over twenty journals, magazines, and anthologies worldwide, and has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He is also a screenwriter and critical essayist. His second feature-length film, Who Killed Cooper Dunn? (2022), was featured on Showtime and other streaming platforms. He wrote, produced, and acted in multiple other short festival films. He is currently a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. When not writing or reading, he can be found hiking with his wife Jessica, playing cribbage, or recovering from various small injuries inflicted by his four children. In my book review, I stated Youtopia is a techno-thriller that still has me thinking. Anabel Downer is an FBI agent assigned to find a murderer. However, this isn't an ordinary murder but one that happened in cyberspace. Youtopia is a place where one can live in a perfect world of their own choosing - every single day - in a virtual reality environment. People tired of life with all its up and downs and disappointments can choose to immerse themselves into Youtopia, living out the rest of their days without pain, discomfort, or disease. As you can imagine, some people love the idea and others abhor it. But who hates it enough to murder? This book is fast-paced and has plenty of twists and turns, especially as we see Anabel's past and her connection to Youtopia. Mostly, it will make you think. What would you give up to have a perfect life? And is perfect really what you want after all? Since 2006, New York Times bestseller Donna Jones Alward has enchanted readers with stories of happy endings and homecomings that have won several awards and been translated into over a dozen languages. She’s worked as an administrative assistant, teaching assistant, in retail and as a stay-at-home-mom, but always knew her degree in English Literature would pay off, as she is now happy to be a full-time writer. Her new historical fiction tales blend her love of history with characters who step beyond their biggest fears to claim the lives they desire. Donna currently lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, with her husband and two cats. You can often find her near the water, either kayaking on the lake or walking the sandy beaches to refill her creative well. In Carole’s book review, she stated When the World Fell Silent is a WW1 tragedy that shakes the core of Canadian Army Nurse, Nora Crowell as she tries to do her part to save the many wounded from the Halifax Harbor explosion. She spends day and night stitching up French soldiers, hardly finding time to nourish herself. On the other side of town, new mother, Charlotte Campbell tries to accept a life with her difficult in-laws after her husband is reported dead in the trenches across the Atlantic. Both women find themselves searching for the same miracle until an amazing twist reveals the need for each to move on to a life neither thought possible. As one woman’s strength gives acknowledgement to her weakness, the other’s weakness shows her a way to accept a life she could only dream about. Donna Jones Alward’s well-written historical fiction, When the World Fell Silent, was released on July 20, 2024. The pages won’t turn fast enough as you wait to see if Nora’s sister and her family will survive the destruction; or will Charlotte’s secret change everyone’s life. Put this one at the top of that book pile on your reading table. | Restoring the Past: Uncovering a Secret in the Pond with Author Rachel Callaghan | 19 Sep 2024 | 00:25:02
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rachel Callaghan, author of the book Under Water. Rachel, novelist, award-winning essayist, ex-short story writer, and former editor of In Posse on WebDelSol, learned a thing or two about traumatic circumstances and the emotional and psychological damage they cause. Starting Hahnemann Medical College (now part of Drexel University) when only one out of eleven students in her class were women, she startled the administration by choosing to have a child her senior year. Even the teaching physicians were put off-balance: one ordered Dr. Callaghan from rounds for being visibly pregnant, as that might scare the patients. Post medical school, she had Internal Medicine, OB-GYN, and ER training and experience, working until her career was cut short when she was diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma. A stem-cell transplant was the cure. What followed was a decade of profound fatigue which left her mourning the loss of patients she loved as friends. The treatment for that was writing about people and making them come alive on the page. Besides writing, she is now a wife, mother, serial home renovator, dog and cat owner, and former traveler who circled the globe at age 21. Dr. Callaghan’s rich life has been instrumental in shaping her fiction. In my book review, I stated Under Water is a dual timeline historical fiction you won't want to miss. Iris pushes her husband, Benny, to move across the country to pre-Civil-War-era home. During the renovations, Iris makes a gruesome discovery - a baby, perfectly preserved at the bottom of their pond. Little does Iris know that her past parallels this infant's past, and learning the secrets will unearth the secrets in her own life. This novel provides the reader with a great story, but also looks at love, relationships, loss, social status, and racial tension, while seamlessly weaving between two worlds. I've always wanted to find a secret in an attic or a diary tucked away in the walls of a home, though I never considered finding a body! Lorraine's book is well-written, heartwarming, and funny, with many laugh-out-loud moments mixed in with heart-wrenching ones. Definitely add this to your TBR. | Skates and Pirouettes: Unexpected Love on the Ice with Author Melissa C Diaferia | 17 Sep 2024 | 00:25:10
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Melissa C Diaferia, author of the book Sugar Plum and the Right Winger. Melissa is a talented independent romance author from Toronto, Ontario. Along with her passion for makeup artistry and nail design, Melissa enjoys writing as another creative outlet for her ideas and passions. Here, she is known to focus on her Italian heritage, musicality, sports, and her love for romance-based plots. Melissa also enjoys giving back to others in her community as she volunteers at her local church to further spread the love and joy she has in her heart. In my book review, I stated Sugar Plum and the Right Winger is a clean, quick-read romance. This novella features Bea, a ballerina, and Teo, a Toronto Blues hockey player. As with any good romance, neither Bea nor Teo are completely honest about their attraction. Plus, Bea is keeping a secret, one that could stop the romance in its tracks before it really gets started. One thing I really enjoyed was that the novella includes songs and Melissa provides readers with the song list - including numbers from the Broadway musical, Hamilton, as well as singers like Elvis, Bocelli, and Michael Bublé. Sugar Plum and the Right Winger is the first in the Toronto Blues series. And BTW, the Toronto Blues is not a real NHL hockey team. The real Toronto team is the Maple Leafs. And yes, I had to look that up! | Blueprints and Whodunits: A Cozy Mystery Unfolds in a Small Town with Author V.S. Gardner | 10 Sep 2024 | 00:22:18
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is V.S. Gardner, author of the book A Killing on Hardee Street. VS Gardner excitedly achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a published author when her first novel, A Killing on Hardee Street, was published in 2020. Holding to the belief that life’s greatest treasures are found in relationships, V.S. Gardner enjoys spending time with family and friends. When not writing, she enjoys reading, thrifting, exploring local points of interest, and trail walking. She is grateful for the many blessings of life. Be sure to follow the Author on Amazon for future publications. In my book review, I stated A Killing on Hardee Street is the first in a series located in Logan, South Carolina, a small town not too far from Myrtle Beach. In fact, this tiny town is patterned after V.S. Gardner's hometown! In this novel, we meet Vonda, a recent widow trying to adjust to her new circumstances. We also meet Marshall and get introduced to his family and his construction company. As Vonda watches new homes being built from her back deck, she sees something she wasn't supposed to see - and this lands her in the thick of a mysterious disappearance. Will she be next? I enjoyed the easy tone of this Cozy Mystery, and you will, too! | Hate in the Shadows: A Thriller of Extremism and Survival with Author Michael Wendroff | 16 Oct 2025 | 00:23:43
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Wendroff, author of the book What Goes Around. Michael Wendroff is the author of What Goes Around, a debut thriller published by Bloomsbury, which bestselling author Lisa Black calls a “brilliant debut,” and bestselling author J.D. Black says “Relentless and gritty, Wendroff expertly weaves a narrative that begs, ‘just one more page…’”
The book was inspired by what his mother said to him the second he was born: “Oh! How nice to see you–Again!”
Michael has an MBA in marketing from NYU, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He is a global marketing consultant.
His mother was an editor (watching his mother scribbling in red ink on manuscript pages at home on weekends prepared him for his own editor's comments!). She remarried a literary agent, so Michael was friendly with many authors, and even spent a vacation with Robert Ludlum. Watching Ludlum hand-write his 450 page novels on yellow legal pads didn't dissuade Michael from trying to write a novel (though he's thankful for his PC).
What Goes Around was launched in the USA, UK, and Australia by Bloomsbury (in hardcover, eBook and Audiobook), and foreign language rights have been sold in Italian, Japanese, and Hungarian. It is now into its third hardcover printing, and the paperback edition comes out in October 2025.
Fun fact: Michael's great-grandfather was brought over by Thomas Edison from the University of Copenhagen to work with him. He holds a number of patents, including for plastic buttons. Michael proudly wears button- down shirts whenever he can.
In my book review, I stated What Goes Around is a thriller that will keep you turning the pages long after you say 'just one more chapter.'
We quickly meet the two main detectives, Jack Ludlum and Jill Jarred. Jack attacks his job with brute strength. Jill uses her brains. The two do not get along but are thrust together to find the serial killer.
Jack and Jill find themselves in the middle of a white supremacist murder spree with too many possible suspects and too many motives. Each time they think they've found their 'man,' the tables turn again. And just when the reader is sure they know the ending, Michael gives it a twist you will never see coming.
This book has it all - danger, romance, and characters you will love. Thankfully, I have insider information that Michael is currently writing a prequel!

| Second Chances on the Eastern Shore: Unveiling a Paranormal Secret with Author Gail Priest | 05 Sep 2024 | 00:25:32 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Gail Priest, author of the book Soul Dancing. Gail has a passion for women’s fiction. Her degrees and work in theatre and counseling psychology inspire her stories of healing from trauma and secrets within families. A dash of romance and her love of second chances are always in the mix. The settings of her novels are influenced by her time spent on the coast of New Jersey and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Gail Priest’s newest novel, Soul Dancing, was an American Fiction Awards semi-finalist for Women’s Fiction. Firebird Book Awards has awarded it first place in Cross Genre and second place is Women’s Fiction. Gail is also the author of the Annie Crow Knoll trilogy which includes Annie Crow Knoll: Sunrise, Sunset, and Moonrise. The final novel was a Kindle Book Awards semi-finalist. Eastern Shore Shorts, her collection of short stories set in various Eastern Shore towns, was a finalist in the International Book Awards Short Story category. Gail is a member of The Women’s Fiction Writers Association, Eastern Shore Writers Association, Novelitics Writers Collective, and the South Jersey Writers Group, where she was named Writer of the Year. Gail lives in New Jersey with her husband and their Havanese dog, Annie. When she’s not writing or teaching, Gail can be found reading or looking for birds and sea glass along the beaches and bays of the East Coast. In my book review, I stated Soul Dancing is a delightful woman's fiction with a bit of romance and a paranormal twist! And quite frankly, I LOVED this cross-genre experiment! Shirlene is a 90-year-old woman dying of cancer. Rain is a 20-year-old drug addict giving birth. Both women die, but Shirlene refuses to go toward the light. However, she dwells long enough that she can't return to her old body, instead finding herself in L&D in the final stages of labor. Imagine this classy, reserved, older woman finding herself in the body of a young woman with tattoos and piercings - and then trying to explain to those she loves what has happened. Throw in her husband's death bed confession, romantic feelings toward Cameron, the uncle willing to raise his brother's baby, and an old friend who pushes Shirlene to take second chances, and you have an amazing novel that will make you shake your head, laugh, cry, and cheer for redemption. I couldn't put this award-winning book down - and I'm betting you won't be able to either! | Through the Storm: A Teen’s Journey of Anger and Growth with Author Mark R Anderson | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:26:16
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark R Anderson, author of the book Sage Among the Pines. Mark, a Fulton Books author, retired after thirty-five years of distinguished service in the Department of Defense and ten years, concurrently, as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He completed his most recent book, Sage Among the Pines. A graduate of the University of Maryland and the National Intelligence University, Mark’s upbringing in a military family instilled a love for travel and exploration, shaping his diverse perspectives and providing rich material for his creative works. Currently, the author resides in Pinehurst, North Carolina, with his wife and youngest daughter. In his spare time, Mark is an avid golfer at Pinehurst Country Club and enjoys filming book videos, alongside indulging in freshwater bass fishing across the Southeastern US. In my book review, I stated that I was excited to read this book before it came out on the shelves. Tom and Cynthia, along with their daughter, Lexi, have a great life. Until. Tom makes a mistake. Cynthia can't forgive him. No one tells Lexi what is going on. And then, without warning, Tom dies in a military training exercise. As Cynthia spirals into depression, her daughter spirals into adolescent rage. Only a sage among the pines, in the form of a grandfather-grandmother duo, can save them. This is a healing journey - healing from loss and betrayal - as well as a forgiveness journey. It shows how complicated life can become, even when people truly love one another. I enjoyed Mark's book because his characters are real. If you enjoy character-driven fiction, then this one is for you. | Life as an American in the Middle East: Challenges and Connections with Author Catherine W Rouhana | 29 Aug 2024 | 00:26:58
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Catherine W Rouhana, author of the book When the Fudge Trees Bloom. Cathy grew up in the ’50s and ‘60s in a three-bedroom row house in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the second of ten children, seven girls, and three boys. Yikes! You might say. Somewhat cramped? Well, yes, in retrospect. But children can always find a cubby hide-away to escape the chaos, (and maybe the chores). In the days before social media and even the days of the infancy of television, she and her siblings escaped into books. They were voracious readers and fought over the treasures brought home from a three-mile hike to the nearest library. Of course, the hiker had first dibs, but the rest was up for grabs. The ‘70s brought marriage to her Lebanese husband and their first child. Books were still front and center with a job as a children’s librarian/head of agency at a branch of the prestigious Enoch Pratt Free Library. This was soon followed by the opening of The Bookmark, an independent bookstore, with her friend and fellow librarian, Janice. But not to stay in one thing for too long, the “80s brought their second son and an offer to Nagib to work in Saudi Arabia. They accepted, and their adventure began. Back and forth in the Middle East, between Lebanon, Nagib’s country of origin, and Saudi Arabia. From heat and humidity and daily sameness to fresh mountain breezes punctuated by intermittent bombings. She returned to the States in the late ‘80s but maintained one foot in the Middle East. Retirement from her position as manager in a medical office gave her the time and space she needed to complete the book she had been writing (slowly) for the past twenty years. When the Fudge Trees Bloom: Memories of an American in the Middle East is her first book, but, she hopes, not her last. In my book review, I stated When the Fudge Trees Bloom is an amazing memoir. Catherine spent many years of her adult life in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. However, the person she was when she left the US as a young mother and wife to a Lebanese citizen, and the person she was when she entered Lebanon again when her son got married were two very different women. I learned a lot about the unrest in the Middle East in the 70s and 80s. I also learned a lot about living life in the closed society of Saudi Arabia and family traditions in Lebanon. This memoir made me wonder how I would have handled the many wars, the political upheaval, the idea that women are second class citizens, and simply the loneliness of being far from home. In the end, I fell in love with Lebanon - at least the Lebanon known to Catherine's family. The one not torn to shreds by war. | Friendship Tested by Hidden Truths: Sleepy Hollow Secrets Revealed with Author Barbara Dullaghan | 27 Aug 2024 | 00:23:56
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Barbara Dullaghan, author of the book, Secrets in the Hollow. Barbara Dullaghan grew up in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown and is enthralled with the magic and energy of the towns. She is published in gifted education with Kendall Hunt and Prufrock Press and her short stories and poetry can be found in three anthologies. She and her husband, Jack, now live in coastal North Carolina and love spending time at the beach with their three children, spouses, and six energetic grandchildren. In my book review, I stated Secrets in the Hollow is a debut mystery set in the small town of Sleepy Hollow. Not only does the storyline follow Carrie Peters - a woman of forty who has yet to figure out her life because she has been hiding her past, but it also provides readers with a great sense of place. Throughout the story, we learn of the history of Sleepy Hollow, its cemetery, and its ghosts. At the same time, we learn of Carrie's secrets - her own personal ghosts that haunt every waking minute. What happens when secrets finally come out? Do friendships remain? Can Carrie find her happily-ever-after? I enjoyed Barbara’s first novel, and those who enjoy mystery will certainly find this to be a good read. | The Crown and the Chaos: A Tale of Intrigue with Author Catherine Butterfield | 22 Aug 2024 | 00:34:56
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Catherine Butterfield, author of the book, The Serpent and the Rose. Catherine was born in Manhattan but raised primarily in Minnesota and Massachusetts. (The Three M's) She was a skinny kid with miserable allergies and spent most of her youth indoors reading books. Her two biggest influences at that point were J.D. Salinger and Anne Frank. As an actress, she spent her early career acting regionally and then started writing for the stage. Her first break as a playwright came with the Manhattan Theatre Club production of JOINED AT THE HEAD, which she wrote and starred in, leading to other productions of her plays in the city and the beginnings of her TV career. Though relocated to Los Angeles, she never stopped writing plays; so far ten of them have been produced and published. During the pandemic she and husband RON WEST created over 60 short films for a series entitled LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN, which can be seen under her name on Youtube. Recently, she has written her first novel, "The Serpent and the Rose," about the French queen Marguerite de Valois and her lifelong battle with her mother, Catherine de Medici. She lives in Santa Monica with Ron West and their cat, Pandita. Her daughter is the actress Audrey Corsa. In my book review, I stated that Marguerite began life as a French princess, became the Queen of Navarre through marriage, and chose to remove herself from that marriage as her husband became King of France. We follow Marguerite's life through journal entries, allowing us to see her dysfunctional family and the craziness of court life from her point of view. I loved that this was written in first person and in present tense - an unusual POV for a historical fiction novel - because I became quite attached to Marguerite and her quick wit and dry sense of humor. I typically do not care for books written about this period of time because I get slogged down in the details of a history I can't keep straight and names that mean nothing to me. However, Butterfield did an amazing job keeping readers engaged with salient facts, a quick tempo, and dashes of humor. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction and a good laugh. | Surviving the Unknown: A Pandemic Refugee's Journey with Author Joel David Bond | 20 Aug 2024 | 00:31:06
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joel David Bond, author of the book As Large As Your Spirit: A Reverse Refugee Memoir. A born explorer, Joel has spent over two decades living and working around the world, from farm work in Italian vineyards to jet-setting as a London-based flight attendant. His recent work in Iraqi Kurdistan built bridges between some of the region’s most elite students and the locally marginalized refugee community through service-learning. He holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Nottingham, UK. His essay, “Amazing Grace,” was shortlisted for the 2022 Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction. Bond is available for interviews as well as speaking engagements and events on topics of refugee rights, education in post-conflict societies, life & culture in Iraqi Kurdistan, or travel-related topics. In my book review, I stated As Large as Your Spirit looks at Joel's life during a five-month forced stay on a Greek Island during the pandemic. Although at first glance, being stranded on a Greek Island sounds idyllic, readers soon realize that being trapped anywhere against your wishes is difficult. Though the setting is beautiful, Joel finds himself without friends, without access to funds, and with limited access to the internet during a time when governments limited a person's ability to travel or even interact outside their own home. In essence, Joel found himself a refugee, but one wishing to go back to the east while most refugees were leaving the east to head west. The book is about finding a place to call home - both physically and within oneself. It showcases the plight of refugees, unlike Joel, who had to flee from their home and must now find ways to make new lands their own. We even get a peek at Roma's, people who, though they live in a country, are not accepted as true citizens. This is a great memoir that will make you think about what it means to be a refugee and what you can do to eliminate your own biases. Great read. | Divine Crossroads: A Christian Thriller Romance with Author Dani Pettrey | 13 Aug 2024 | 00:25:15
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Dani Pettrey, author of the book One Wrong Move. Dani has sold nearly 800,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their "wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters" (Publishers Weekly), "gripping storyline[s]," (RT Book Reviews), and "sizzling undercurrent of romance" (USA Today). Her Alaskan Courage, Chesapeake Valor, and Coastal Guardian series have received praise from readers and critics alike. She's been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a two-time Christy Award finalist, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award. From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves--full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband. In my book review, I stated that One Wrong Move is a Christian Mystery and Suspense with a great side of romance. Andi is ex-FBI because of what the higher-ups called a botched job. She now works as an investigator for an insurance company. After a gallery heist, she meets Christian, a security expert and private investigator who installed the gallery's security system. Immediately, the two find themselves in the middle of some strange game with the thief or thieves who leave riddles for them to find. Unfortunately, the object of the "game" seems to include the demise of both Christian and Andi. As they dodge one attempt on their life after another, Andi and Christian have to face their feelings for one another as well as the mistakes in their pasts. Will Andi be vindicated? Can Christian convince Andi that he is on the up and up? Or will those intent on killing them win before they know? | Pages of Love: A Writer and Bookseller Dream Big with Author Maryann McFadden | 10 Aug 2024 | 00:28:18
Today, Online for Authors will be hosted by an amazing guest host, Carole O’Neill. Her guest is Maryann McFadden, author of the book The Book Lover. In 2007 Maryann McFadden “won the literary lottery” according to writing blogs when her previously self-published novel, The Richest Season, sold at auction to Hyperion Books. It became a Target Breakout Novel and an Indie Next Pick by the American Booksellers Association. Her next 2 novels, Cape Cod Light and The Book Lover are also Indie Next Picks. Her 4th novel, The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife, is a historical novel set in her NJ hometown and has become a book club sensation. It is a novel she believes she was destined to write. Maryann’s books have been translated into multiple languages and her unusual publishing journey has inspired many aspiring authors. You can reach her at maryannmcfadden.com. The Christmas Star is her fifth novel. In Carole’s book review, she stated that if you love to read, and especially if you love to discover independent bookstores, you’ll enjoy The Book Lover by Maryann McFadden. Her bookstore owner, Ruth, is not only believable, but you’ll find yourself encouraging her to find her way to the second chance she doesn’t think is possible. In fact, the book if full of second chances. Just as you’re sure you know where the story is going, you’ll be surprised by a new twist you never saw coming. Any writer who is struggling with a decision of whether to self-publish or wait for an answer from an agent, will recognize Lucy’s dilemma and be amazed at how she solves her problems. This is an easy and enjoyable read that I recommend you add to your list of TBR’s. | Secrets and Lies: Your Biggest Mistakes Do Not Define You with Patti Frye Meredith | 06 Aug 2024 | 00:28:59
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Patti Frye Meredith, author of the book South of Heaven. Patti’s debut novel came out late in life and for her, that's right on time. She could not be happier. She grew up in Galax, Virginia. Most of her stories are set in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, but South of Heaven takes place in the North Carolina Sandhills, in Carthage where her family’s roots run deep. Please know that the Carthage in South of Heaven was born from long ago visits to see her grandmothers, a Carthage formed from hazy childhood memories that have become more imaginary than real. If you know the real Carthage, she apologizes for misplaced landmarks and fictitious churches. After living all over over the South—Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana—she and her husband, Lee, have settled back in Chapel Hill with their Springer Spaniel, Maggie. Nothing could be finer. In my book review, I stated South of Heaven is a contemporary family fiction that is filled to the brim with amazing characters, as well as a delightful and though-provoking storyline. In fact, if you have family - and we all do - you'll relate to miscommunications, slights, white lies, bold-faced lies, and reinventions of the past that often occur between those we love. Fern made a poor choice when she was barely accountable for such things and has lived with the consequences every single day since. Except for her son, her aunt, and one friend, she has kept to herself, hoping to somehow atone for her sins. Her sister, Leona, on the other hand, seems to have it all, moving beyond their rotten childhood. But what happens when truth - old and new - becomes headline news? I love this story because it is one of redemption and love. We all make mistakes. We all try to cover those mistakes up, usually with disastrous results. We all find a way to love family, despite it all. This is a wonderful novel, and I highly recommend it. | Unlocking Your Author Potential: Essential Business Strategies with Author Leigh Shulman | 03 Aug 2024 | 00:25:57
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leigh Shulman, author of the book The Writer's Roadmap. Leigh is a writer and writing mentor with two decades of experience under her belt. She founded The Inspired Writer Community, an online mentoring community for writers at any stage in their writing lives. Her bestselling book The Writer's Roadmap: Paving the Way To Your Ideal Writing Life helps thousands find their way in the writing world. Her international writing retreat and website are listed in The Write Life’s top resources for writers, and her words have appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Longreads, and Guernica among others. Leigh lives in Argentina with her family where she writes and wonders if she’s the only person on earth who doesn’t like dulce de leche. In my book review, I stated The Writer's Roadmap is an amazing writer's craft book. Unlike several that I've read, this one has little to do with writing tips and tricks and everything to do with treating your writing like a business. I was worried that the book wasn't going to agree with my creative mind, but I soon learned how wrong I was. This roadmap helped me determine what I wanted from my writing (the objective) and then helped me create a clear plan for getting what I want (goals, strategies, and measures). Having this roadmap allows busy authors to determine what things to say yes to and which things to let go. Because, let's face it, we can't do it all! I highly recommend this book to authors, especially those who feel they have too much on their plate and don't know which way to turn. | Secrets of the Flea Market: When a Find Turns Supernatural with Author LG Nixon | 14 Oct 2025 | 00:20:38
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is LG Nixon, author of the book The Ghost of Darwin Stewart. LG Nixon fuses a page-turning fantasy with a haunting theme and turns it into a spirit filled adventure with quirky and likeable characters the whole family can enjoy. Her stories are lighthearted but carry an underlying message of the importance of a Biblical worldview. Her faith and her love of Biblical studies fuels her imagination and her desire to give teens who might not know about their Creator God, an engaging and entertaining way to learn what the Bible says about Him and to introduce basic spiritual concepts.
After a long career in office management, she left the workplace behind and turned to writing. Today, she enjoys writing Biblically based ghost stories filled with mystery, suspense, and other worldly wisdom. She researches and writes full-time from her home in Michigan where she prowls the night star gazing and watching for a supernatural event.
She is always in search of the perfect cup of coffee, the softest afghan, a good book and a quiet corner. LG loves to ski, ride motorcycles, travel, and fly small planes; but no bungy-jumping, thank you very much.
In my book review, I stated The Ghost of Darwin Stewart by L.G. Nixon is a fast-paced Christian YA Fantasy Thriller. Yes - all of that! Talk about a book that crosses genres! Immediately, I found similarities to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis as well as a bit of Harry Potter by J.K Rowling.
Early on, we meet the Dark Prince who realizes that the best way to get what he wants - an artifact from a girl named Lucy and her friend Schuyler - is to make them doubt who they are. He uses human emotions like anger, fear, and despondency. On the other hand, we meet the High King who uses love, meekness, and kindness. But it is up to Lucy to determine which way she will go, and the choice is not easy - especially when those she loves end up on the wrong end of the Dark Prince's wrath.
If you love a good vs evil story with ghosts, demons, and battles, then you are sure to love this book.

| The Untold Story of John Ridge: A Real Cherokee Hero with Author Leslie K Simmons | 23 Jul 2024 | 00:44:08 | |
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie K Simmons, author of the book Red Clay, Running Waters. Leslie K. Simmons writes about extraordinary people at the center of crucial turning points in American history. She is particularly fascinated by outliers and the lesser known (but no less incredible) stories that slip through history’s cracks. After decades of research, she followed a path marked by serendipities to the true story of John and Sarah Ridge and her debut novel, Red Clay, Running Waters. In my book review, I stated Red Clay, Running Waters is a masterful account of John Ridge, a Cherokee statesman and his wife, Sarah Northrop. Simmons' research is phenomenal and gives readers a glimpse into what it was like as Georgia tried to force the Cherokee from its borders. Quite honestly, I had trouble reading and could only take the novel in small doses. Not because of the writing - which was flawless - but because of what I learned about how my government treated the Cherokee - lying, slandering, stealing, and killing. In addition to the heartless treatment of a great People, the book also looks at love. The relationship between Sarah and John is beautiful, though in no way perfect. Despite having continual trials, this couple found a way to keep moving forward. It certainly gave me hope. This is not a book for the faint of heart, but one that should be on everyone's TBR list. | Badass Women: International Tales of Suspense with Author Lya Badgley | 16 Jul 2024 | 00:32:07
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lya Badgley, author of the book The Worth of a Ruby. Lya was born in Yangon, Myanmar. The child of Montana parents – a political scientist and an artist – she grew up in a household that encouraged critical thinking and creativity. After dabbling in retail management, Lya moved to the Pacific Northwest in the eighties, becoming a part of the Seattle arts and music scene. In the nineties, after a decade of life as a struggling poet/ musician, she returned to Southeast Asia as a videographer on a clandestine expedition interviewing Burmese insurgents. A year later, she was working as director of Cornell University’s Archival Project, microfilming documents at Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide in Cambodia, helping to bring war criminals to justice. Finishing that, she managed the first foreign-owned project of its kind for the time, opening the 50th Street Bar & Grill Restaurant in Yangon, Myanmar. Since then, Lya has been an elected city council member and a dedicated environmental activist. She is a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association, the Pacific Northwest Writers Association, and Hugo House. Her first self-published novel, The Foreigner’s Confession, was released to good reviews in February of 2022. Her second novel, The Worth of a Ruby, launched November 2023. Badgley lives in Snohomish, Washington, and is working on her third novel set in Bosnia. In my book review, I stated that I thoroughly enjoyed Lya’s first novel, The Foreigner's Confession, and was super excited to get my hands on this one, The Worth of a Ruby, set in Burma. Badgley writes edgy international crime/suspense and gets the reader into the mind of her characters. Mallory Jones, a chef, like the author, wanted to open a restaurant in Burma but not because she was in love with the area. Instead, she was running from her past. However, as is wont when folks try to escape their past by running from it, the past found a way to erupt. As plans for a restaurant fall through, we see a side of Mallory that isn't evident in the beginning. The Worth of a Ruby has it all: great characters, amazing backdrop, kidnapping, blackmail, murder, and a bit of Burmese magic. Plus, in the words of the author, " I like ambiguous endings." Don't miss this book!
