Whispers of the Balkans: A Dance of Memory and Desire with Author Michele Levy
Episode 206
mardi 25 novembre 2025 • Duration 19:56
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michele Levy, author of the book Anna's Dance. Born a Yankee in Providence, Rhode Island, after seven years in Boston, she moved with her family to Wisconsin and Northern Virginia. Then she continued the southern trend with graduate studies in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and followed her Brooklyn-born husband even farther south, to New Orleans. Twenty-six years later, they traded the Superdome (seven minutes away from their house by car) for the North Carolina woods. This wandering stripped away her Boston accent, leaving a tendency to enunciate clearly that made New Orleanians think she was from England.
From the age of four she has played classical piano and read voraciously. But an exposure to Balkan dance in high school kindled what became a life-long passion. Still, her love for D. H. Lawrence and Dostoevsky led her to a PhD in Comparative Literature (English, French, Russian), and then to universities, where she taught, researched, and became a chair. Though she first published on Russian and European authors, her academic interest shifted to the Balkans. She wrote on Balkan history and literature and returned to the region (she’d first visited in 1968) in 2000, after the end of the Bosnian War, and 2002, invited by the Serbian Writers’ Association. By then she’d begun to write poetry and stories with Balkan settings. Anna’s Dance grew from her deep engagement with Balkan history and culture.
These days, she plays piano and reads, but mostly she writes. She’s working on a novel about a Bosnian asylee in New Orleans. Carolina’s nature nurtures her, she and her husband enjoy their three children and seven grandchildren, who have moved nearby, and she still does Balkan dance!
In my book review, I stated Anna's Dance: A Balkan Odyssey is a beautiful Jewish historical fiction novel. I once again found myself wondering what history I was taught in school because I knew next to nothing about Balkan history, even as it related to WWII. This book helped me fill in several gaps in my knowledge.
We meet Anna Rossi, an early 20's girl on a journey through the Balkan region. She starts out with one set of plans and moves to another, then another, and then another, finding herself learning more and more about prejudice and suffering. She sees a strong correlation to her own Jewish heritage - how minority suppression can lead to horrible end results, including violence.
As Anna travels, she grows from a silly girl to an experienced woman who knows her place in the world. Eventually, she learns to embrace her heritage and all that encompasses. I found the book to be quite beautiful in the telling and very relevant to our day.
Author Note: There are some sexual scenes - a couple that were a bit graphic for my taste. However, overall, these scenes were not gratuitous but helped the reader understand where Anna was in her journey.

When America Turns on Its Own: A Dystopian Story Too Close to Home by Author MN Lee
Episode 222
samedi 22 novembre 2025 • Duration 24:56
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is MN Lee, author of the book Proof of Origin. MN Lee is a fiction author with a soft spot for oversteeped tea, tangled gardens, and stories that blur the line between the real and the uncanny. She writes across speculative and literary genres, weaving sharp prose, political unease, and moments of quiet magic into narratives that linger. She is hard at work on her next novel, The Ajumma Point, a feminist comedy about supernatural midlife transformation.
In my book review, I stated that Proof of Origin is a contemporary women's fiction that could be torn from today's headlines. This near-future story looks at politics gone awry, with the latest executive order calling for a lineage purity test. Anyone not 'American enough' is no longer welcome in the US and sent to camps that are far too reminiscent of the concentration camps of WWII.
We follow three characters - Jenny, born in the US to Vietnamese immigrant parents, Huy, Vietnamese but highly influential in the US government - until he's not, and Charlotte, a woman on the arm of an up and coming politician. What happens as their lives criss-cross and each has to confront difficult truths?
Lee's rendition of the rhetoric from the US government is very haunting - from the views on immigrants to their views on woman, birth control, family, books, and more. It is reminiscent of things one might hear on fringe-leaning social media posts, which makes her story even more chilling.
But we also see what happens to people who, once erased from their country, find a way to move forward and build again. Lee's ability to show resilience, and how it is forged, is beautiful, despite the circumstances.
I think this is a must-read book, if for no other reason than to help people understand what happens when you take something like patriotism and transform it into nationalism that has gone too far.

From MySpace to TikTok: The Dark Evolution of Social Media with Author Tim O’Hearn
Episode 205
jeudi 23 octobre 2025 • Duration 27:09
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tim O'Hearn, author of the book Framed. Tim O’Hearn is a software engineer who works in quantitative finance. He is also an entrepreneur and freelance writer.
As a sports journalist, he covered the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. As a prolific creator of user-generated content, he has written hundreds of book reviews and thousands of other entries such as restaurant reviews, product reviews, blog posts, and comments-section polemics.
Framed: A Villain's Perspective on Social Media is his first book.
In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: I read this book with a notebook by my side. There was so much information I felt like I was taking a full semester course. Framed: A Villain’s Perspective on Social Media was my daily tutorial and Tim O’Hearn was my professor.
He grew up with the internet using first, Myspace, then all the way thru Tiktok. And believes everything on the internet today can be traced back to Myspace. Because of that, O’Hearn feels he’s experienced being a puppeteer as well as a puppet. Facebook surpassed Myspace between 2009 and 2012. During that period search interest in both “hits” and “web counter” dropped off steeply.
Although he thinks the content about social media is misleading, this book is the best offering of coverage on Social Media Marketing. His tutorial explains how social media platforms have the same complicated relationship with spam bots that the U.S. Postal Service has with junk mail.
Before you reach the thirty pages of footnotes, you will learn about the “dead internet theory;” how external participants use software to wield godlike influence in the digital world; how he was accused of using, “What if I told you that I could get you more Instagram followers,” as a pick-up line to impress women; and, so much more.
This book cannot be read in one sitting. Especially if you want to retain all the opinions he has to offer. So read it once or read it several times. But read it.

In the Trenches: Life as a COVID Frontline Nurse with Author Kim Sloan
Episode 121
jeudi 12 décembre 2024 • Duration 29:40
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kim Sloan, author of the book Memoirs from the Frontlines. Kim, BSN, RN, Travel ICU nurse has been a nurse since 2008. She began working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2008 then pursued her Associate of Nursing degree from Central Ohio Technical College in 2013. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2015 from South University.
Throughout her career, her experience has primarily been in the critical care setting including emergency room (ER) and Intensive care units (ICU). She travels in both areas with ICU as her main passion. Her husband has been a nurse since 2001 working mostly in the intensive care units. He also obtained his BSN from South University in 2017. Their families, children, and grandchildren live in Ohio where Kim and her husband still maintain a home. They travel the country in their RV, living thirteen weeks at a time (the normal time frame for an assignment) as travel ICU nurses and have been doing so since 2017. They have traveled to and ridden their motorcycle in all fifty states, and they have worked nineteen different assignments at the time of this writing within thirteen different states. In her spare time, Kim enjoys riding motorcycles, and she is an avid chronological scrapbooker. Not to mention, her most enjoyable passion is spending time with her beautiful three granddaughters.
In my book review, I stated Memoirs from the Frontlines is a memoir written about her experiences as an ICU nurse during COVID - and not just any ICU nurse, but one battling the pandemic in one of the hotspots in the United States - a small town in Southern Georgia. This memoir is a hard look at the pandemic from the eyes of someone who saw the worst of the worst.
Her story covers the first two years of the pandemic and takes readers to four different hospitals. She lets us see things that were not shown on the news, hear the truth about the ravages of COVID, and begin to understand the horrific experience of helplessly watching people die one organ at a time.
As I read, I noted several shared experiences from one way lines in the grocery store to modified holidays with my family. But I also noted experiences that were uniquely those on the frontlines. And I completely understand her desire to save the rest of us from that miserable disease.
If you wonder if the lockdown was necessary, if the masks made sense, if the vaccine was/is helpful, or if anything you did during 2020 and 2021 helped anyone, I urge you to read this account - and then count yourself blessed to be here to read Kim's words.

Healers of the Hearth: A Medieval Woman's Journey to Become a Physician with Author Lorraine Norwood
Episode 119
mardi 10 décembre 2024 • Duration 23:46
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lorraine Norwood, author of the book The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine is a former journalist and archaeologist who lives in Western North Carolina. Her short stories and essays have been published in Minerva Rising, New Southerner, Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 3, and Talking Writing, and have won awards in the Atlanta Writers Club contests. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society, Womens' Fiction Writers Association, and Author Accelerator. Her debut novel, The Solitary Sparrow, will be published in the spring of 2024. She is at work on the sequel, A Pelican in the Wilderness. The novels are part of a series set in 14th century England and France. Lorraine is also a certified Book Coach and developmental editor. She writes with an always-hungry yellow Lab, Sally, by her side and an aloof cat, Macavity, who sometimes deigns to be touched.
In my book review, I stated The Solitary Sparrow is an amazing historical fiction set in 14th century England and France. I loved the premise - a child, Meg, considered evil due to a birth deformity eventually finds her passion in medicine. But how will she move forward given her facial disfigurement, her family's station in life, and the fact that she is a woman?
Early in the book, Meg determines that she will become the first licensed female physician in English and hopes to provide care to women. She is tutored by a village healer, then a surgeon and his son, and even a school of medicine, though she must remain hidden from view because no females are allowed to attend. Despite it all, she thrives - gaining knowledge, wisdom, and even love.
If you love a story about persistence and courage, then you will love The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine's research is top-notch and her characters come to life on the page. It's a must read.

AI and Writing: Unlocking Creativity or Threatening Authenticity with Author Mike Trigg
Episode 109
samedi 7 décembre 2024 • Duration 26:54
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mike Trigg, author of the book Burner. Mike is here today to chat with us about AI and how this technology will affect authors.
Mike Trigg was born in Kentucky and raised in Wisconsin. He earned a BA from Northwestern University and an MBA from University of California, Berkeley. Before becoming a novelist, Trigg had a twenty-five-year career in Silicon Valley https://www.linkedin.com/in/triggmike/ as a founder, executive, and investor in dozens of venture-funded technology start-ups.
Trigg’s first novel, BIT FLIP, was released in August 2022 to critical acclaim, with 5-star reviews from Foreword, IndieReader, and the Manhattan Book Review, and lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle as a “twisty, acerbic corporate thriller” set in Silicon Valley.
His second novel, BURNER, comes out April 16, 2024. Billed as a "fascinating thriller in which an online movement swallows up the person who started it" by Foreword Clarion Reviews, the novel dives headfirst into political disinformation, toxic internet subcultures, and our need for belonging and purpose in an age of distorted online personas.
Trigg has been a contributor to TechCrunch, Entrepreneur, Fast Company and Literary Hub and featured in dozens of media articles and interviews. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, with his wife and two sons.

Whale Songs and Wildflowers: Trapped in the Dark with Author Cynthia Reeves
Episode 110
mardi 3 décembre 2024 • Duration 33:23
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cynthia Reeves, author of the book The Last Whaler. Cynthia Reeves is the author of three books of fiction: the Arctic novel The Last Whaler; the novel in stories Falling Through the New World, winner of Gold Wake Press’s Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands, winner of Miami University Press’s Novella Prize. Her short stories, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was featured in If the Storm Clears, an anthology that concerns the sublime in the natural world.
Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard’s western shores, as well as three subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen and a trip around Iceland’s Ring Road, that have inspired her writing since then. Cynthia earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College and taught creative writing at Bryn Mawr and Rosemont Colleges. Find out more at cynthiareeveswriter.com.
In my book review, I stated The Last Whaler is a historical fiction that looks at the will to survive in the harshest circumstances. We follow Astrid through her journal entries, while we follow her husband, Tor, through his journal entries ten years later. The back and forth allows the reader to see Astrid struggles in real time as well as Tor's reflections - and all the things he missed.
Astrid is strong-willed and vibrant. She is educated and dedicated. She wants - very much - to move on beyond a tragedy. A summer spent with her husband, a whaler, on a remote island, seems to be the ticket. She will revive her relationship. She will study the flora. She will find forgiveness for herself. Except, the Arctic has other ideas.
This story, beautifully told, explores mental illness, religious faith, man's impact on the environment, and the solace of storytelling. You won't want to miss it.

Whispers from Beyond: Ghosts Really Do Exist? With Author Jeff Giles
Episode 115
samedi 30 novembre 2024 • Duration 24:24
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jeff Giles, author of the book Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane.
Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. When Jeff isn't working on his next project, he's probably either running off yesterday's calories or playing guitar (badly).
Jeff lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, and a pair of dogs.
In my book review, I stated Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is a humorous fantasy - another combination I had never read but truly enjoyed. It was sort of Harry Potter "esque" with far more tongue-in-cheek references and great bits of history trivia thrown in.
The story starts with Langley's death - he is crushed by a falling piano. Langley spent his entire life debunking the idea of ghosts, magic, and anything you couldn't see with your own eyes or prove with science. However, when he becomes a ghost, he realizes he's been wrong.
Before he can wrap his mind around his error, he finds himself on a quest to save mankind by finding his childhood hero - the magician who failed and thrust Langley toward his lifelong obsession of proving magic doesn't exist.
This dual timeline story moves quickly, has great characters, and lots of laughs. However, it also causes the reader to think about what is important in life and what holds the universe together. I highly recommend this book.

A Curator’s Journey: A Memoir of a Colorful Life with Author Jack
Episode 98
mardi 26 novembre 2024 • Duration 26:04
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jack Maher, author of the book Poppy. Jack is a proud fifth generation Colorado native and grandson of Eric Douglas. Poppy is his first novel. A four-time National Television Arts & Sciences Heartland Chapter Emmy winner, he worked at KUSA-TV in Denver as a 9NEWS Multimedia Journalist and Executive Producer.
In my book review, I stated Poppy: A Novel About A Colorful Colorado Life is a family memoir written about Poppy by his grandson, Jack. I love family history, and I love it when a child or grandchild feels that their progenitors are worthy of recall.
Eric Douglas's life, known affectionately as Poppy, is incredible. Through him, we learn about Native Americans in and around Colorado, especially their art and the processes (clay, paint, beadwork, and more) passed on through the generations. We watch Poppy push Native American art to the forefront in Denver, but also in New York City, and San Francisco. We learn of his new ways to display art, his 'fashion shows' highlighting textile art, and his work to provide live demonstrations.
Poppy lived an unusual life that often took him from his family. But still, his family meant everything to him. I loved learning about Poppy, and I think you will, too!

From Alaska to Manhattan: Unraveling the Secret Past with Author Tina Hogan Grant
Episode 108
samedi 23 novembre 2024 • Duration 22:46
Carole O’Neill’s (Guest Host) guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tina Hogan Grant, author of the book Secrets Told. A native of England, she feels very lucky to have spent her childhood and adolescent years in a small quaint Yorkshire town called Ilkley, where many days were spent roaming the Yorkshire moors, climbing the Cow & Calf Rocks, swimming in the River Wharfe and playing “Conkers” and “Jacks” with schoolmates.
She is the youngest daughter of famed science-fiction author James P. Hogan who sadly passed away before her first book was published. She thanks her dad for sharing his passion for books and writing with her. Today she is living that passion with hopes of passing it on to her children and grandkids.
In Carol’s book review, I stated As I read the beginning chapters of Secrets Told by Tina Hogan Grant, I was certain her main character was a carbon copy of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. Patricia Levenick’s complete focus on her job (this one as the head of her own law firm in Manhattan) reminded me of how everyone at the workplace feared upsetting their workaholic boss. Patricia even had two daughters, like Miranda. Ones she kept busy with ballet lessons, horseback riding lessons and any other activity that would not interfere with the needs of her law firm. I knew where this story was going.
Then suddenly, the twist. Patricia’s reaction to the letter she receives from a lawyer back in her hometown, changes everything. Initially, she was not going to let confronting her past change her lifestyle, or even slow it down long enough to admit she left a very different existence far from the hustle and bustle of New York City.
With the insistence of her ex-husband, Bryce, that their daughters have a right to know who she really is, she agrees to take the family back long enough to satisfy his curiosity about what her childhood was really like. Their surprising knowledge of her life on the water and the discovery of a grandfather they never knew they had, brings the entire family to a new high.
Alaska becomes its own character as they explore the amazing countryside and uncover the real Pattie. Grant reveals a memorable picture of the love of fishing in a nearly perfect world.
