Episode 20 welcomes John Turner, formerly a journalist turned audience developer at USA Today Sports Media Group who joined us to discuss his experiences developing digital media audiences. John brings a wealth of experience the past decade across old media's transformation to digital (Huntsville Times, The Sporting News, Golfweek) and the tools as well as best practices. John talks about the evolution from print to digital, how audience scale is no longer the core goal as they transition to focus on subscribers (email newsletter, push notifications) are the goal today, and ultimately how paid subscription products for high-quality content maybe the future for content. What are you trying to get users to do? “We want to see email newsletter opt-ins, we want to see single sign-on because we're fighting the impending Cookie apocalypse.” Best Practice for customer engagement: “The big winner of the past decade has been email...it’s become a major distribution platform...it's become a major monetization platform.”

| Customer Engagement Interview Learnings | 10 Nov 2020 | 00:20:43 | |
The OneSignal podcast aims to educate listeners on product, industry, and best practices to build a great customer messaging practice. Episode 19 welcomes David Vallance, a journalist with Campfire Labs, who wrote OneSignal's Customer Engagement Journey book. David interviewed a half dozen customer engagement practitioners from a wide range of business types and regions of the world - from SaaS B2B (Joe), professional sports (National Rugby League), consumer media (Softonic & USAToday Sports) and eCommerce (MuteSix & InspireUplift) - in an effort to understand best practices and illuminate what great customer engagement looks like. David joins the podcast to discuss some of the stories that didn't make it into the book. The customer engagement starting point for all businesses is list building, getting consumers to opt-in to receiving push notifications, email, among other channels. 1) Start getting opt-ins today, it's the first and most important step towards building a loyal customer base. 2) Be relevant with every message, don't overwhelm them as these are the foundation of your list. Specifically, with Push Notifications, consumers can and will opt-out if they receive a lot of irrelevant messages. 3) You should be using Push Notifications and email, deploy marketing best practices. An interesting story that didn't make it into the eBook was with Joe's CTO & Co-founder Lenny Urbanowski, who walked through how push notifications (and In-App Messages) guide the consumer journey. From promoting an offer, ordering, confirming order and timeframe, and highlighting that the order is ready to be picked up. It enriches the customer experience and keeps them engaged throughout the process. Please listen to the podcast to hear more of David's insights and download the Customer Engagement Journey book. Episode 18 welcomes Kunle Campbell, 2X eCommerce Podcast & eCommerce consultant. Kunle has two decades of digital marketing experience, he's published 263 podcasts and has been an eCommerce expert focusing on driving 2x growth for ecommerce businesses. Kunle joins the OneSignal podcast to discuss the best customer messaging practices for eCommerce businesses. Campbell says eCommerce businesses should use email, as well as deploy Push Notifications, SMS, and other tactics to ensure every business is meeting their visitors and shoppers in the channel they prefer, however, he cautioned against using push notifications too much. "I take them like salt, use sparingly. You need salt in your food, but you're not going to just throw it all in. People expect that emails will be flooded, but they don't expect to be bombarded with notifications. We'll just turn it off. So use them vary sparingly".Please listen to hear more of Kunle's insights. | Acquisition vs. Retention w/ Martech Podcast Host Benjamin Shapiro | 26 Aug 2020 | 00:15:44 | |
The OneSignal podcast aims to educate listeners on product, industry, and best practices to build a great customer messaging practice. Episode 16 welcomes Benjamin Shapiro to discuss user Acquisition vs. Retention. Benjamin has an extensive digital marketing background, working on the marketing team at eBay in the 2000s, and then leading marketing for an assortment of startups before creating the leading podcast on marketing technology called Martech Podcast. Benjamin's point of view comes from nearly two decades of practical marketing application experience. His opinion is the "smart money is in retention" because that is the highest return on investment and the most efficient part of a marketing team's budget. However, he stresses that marketers aren't primarily focused on user acquisition but “every marketer must learn how to acquire because its a requirement to start up and bring customers into a business”. The takeaway, every business has to acquire first. Then the challenge is to know when to focus on retention. There's always pressure in marketing to show growth metrics and an ability to scale. However, retention is more efficient and cheaper in the long run, so great businesses acquire and they retain their customers.
