Money – a topic that never exits conversations in culture. It touches each one of our lives. And if it’s at the forefront of your thoughts in the morning or at night, you’re not alone. That said, we serve a God who wants the best for us. When it comes to money, fear & anxiety have no space in God’s plan for our lives. His will for our life is peace. But why does God care so much about money? Scripture abounds with words concerning it; even Jesus mentioned this during his ministry: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” (Matthew 6:21) God cares about your finances because He cares about your heart. From Onechurch’s Generosity Sunday, Pastor Filmore gives an honest talk about money. Primarily sharing from Philippians 1 & 4 (but also drawing references from various verses), we are walked through a framework of what it means to go beyond being consumers and stepping into a partnership with the work God has been establishing. God’s will for our life is peace, but we are reminded that if we want God’s will, it means embracing His way. Relentlessly, we see God exemplify generosity. In scripture we see how God gave His only son. He is a giver. From creation to breath, to strength in our everyday life – God is persistently proving the attribute of giving. God often challenges us before changing us. Jesus isn’t our interior designer. This weekend at Onechurch Pastor Filmore Bouldes resumed our study through the Gospel of John. At the beginning of the second chapter, we find Jesus providing and bringing joy through the miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding. As we read through John 2:13-22, we now see Jesus with a different emotional response due to what He observes. In a powerful display of divine authority, Jesus cleanses the Temple in Jerusalem. Outraged by the commercialization of God’s sacred space during Passover, he overturns tables, drives out those profiting from the spiritual practices of the people, and even mentions his upcoming crucifixion and resurrection. The sounds of worship were drowned out by the sound of business. Jesus demonstrated his seriousness and zeal for God’s house and his commitment to restoring it to its intended purpose. The house of God exists not to meet consumer demands but to prioritize God’s presence. What does Jesus see when he looks at our church? Are we confusing our priorities? As we grow in our walk with Christ, our hearts and minds now become the temple Jesus seeks to dwell within. In this message, Pastor Filmore reminds us about the importance of examining our own spiritual lives and considering whether distractions have hindered our relationship with God. We are challenged to view our attitudes and comfortable habits; are they the type to make Jesus flip tables in our temple? A mature faith in truth exists with learning to know all of Jesus revealed through scripture. This does not happen by putting Him in boxes. We serve a God who not only joyfully provides but also righteously confronts. And the reason is because He is passionate about us. So, what does Jesus see when he steps into the temple of our hearts? Jesus isn’t looking for a temporary lease; he is looking for a permanent residence. He hopes to reside, cleanse, and transform.

Pastor Pradeepan Jeeva from Kalos Church in Bellevue, WA spent this past weekend strengthening Onechurch with his message. As our church and lives grow, roots and direction can cross our minds. Seattle, in itself, is a city full of movement. Reading from John 12, Psalm 92, and Mark 11:15-17, Pastor Pradeepan shares an understanding of what it means to grow. A seed - for it to develop - needs to be first planted. Soil, specifically good soil, is necessary. Though commitment may be a major topic, when we place our roots in the house of God, stability within that growth is created. Besides our brothers and sisters, the good soil of community guides us beyond shallow relationships. In this message, we are called towards setting roots and stop looking for the "perfect" church. As seen through scripture, having a place is a gift from God. We are reminded of Jesus turning tables and fighting for His place of prayer, where people from all backgrounds and nations can be together. Jesus fought for His church. Onechurch is a house of prayer and we are encouraged to get involved, find stability alongside each other, and flourish. You grow up where your roots grow down.

Salt holds its most impact once it leaves the saltshaker. Joining us all the way from Collective Church in Malaysia, in this special message we held the honor of welcoming our friend, Pastor Kevin Loo, and his family to Seattle. As we have been recently studying the Book of John, Pastor Kevin beautifully continued the conversation. At the turning point of Jesus preparing for his departure, we are reminded of disciples who, to be described most honestly, were panicking. At one point these same disciples were excited about this King, who would bring deliverance to them and their people. Now, not only had they realized that the kingdom wouldn't materialize how they had imagined, but this King was now leaving. These men had traded everything to follow Jesus. They expected life to move quickly, but the greater picture was different. Within this moment, Jesus talked to the Father. Teaching from John 17:13-18, Pastor Kevin shared and elaborated on the power this passage had on Jesus' twelve disciples and now the calling it has for Christ-followers today. Jesus described us as being in the world but not of the world. He saw the hatred brought upon those who chose to live at different standards, specifically Kingdom standards. Amidst the panic and questions his disciples were having, Jesus understood all the challenges it would bring to follow Him. Pastor Kevin reflected that living centered on love, generosity, and holiness runs contrary to the self-centered, materialistic values of dominant culture. When we lean into scripture we see life through giving more than receiving, going the extra mile, and loving our enemies. The words Jesus spoke and the standards God holds for us run counter-intuitive to the world around us. We are in the world but not of the world. But the conversation doesn't end here. We being in the world but not of the world is only two-thirds of the story. In this message of empowerment, we were reminded that in the same prayer found in John 17, Jesus sends us. He prays for us not to be taken out of the world but to be protected. The baton was passed to us. With the love and life-changing beauty Jesus has brought to our lives, we are now called to step into our everyday lives with empowerment. Just like salt, we are meant to go and marinate society and all forms of life. That being said, we are challenged to go beyond our usual patterns. As described by Pastor Kevin, "It is quite useless if Christians only hang out with Christians." Salt holds its most impact once it leaves the saltshaker. Onechurch will be a blessing for Seattle. God always proves to be faithful.

| It's Okay to Be Andrew | 16 Oct 2024 | 00:35:51 | |
Public recognition is not synonymous with Godly reward. We just marked our third week at Nippon Kan Theatre, where we continued our series in the Book of John — a series which both comforts and challenges us. This past weekend Pastor Filmore walked us through the unique store of a man who didn't search the spotlight yet still found impact within God's work. Andrew, first introduced on the basis of being Peter's brother, was one of the first disciples to follow Jesus. Biblical and world history has never forgotten Peter, but through examining John 1:35-42 we learn that between the two brothers, Andrew was the first to encounter the Messiah and then bring that news to Peter. That being said, we do not hear about Andrew very often, yet we see how he found rhythm within God's timing. Have you ever felt that no matter how much effort you put into something, your efforts have gone unnoticed? Andrew's life illuminates this subject. Peter, the church icon, wasn't brought to Jesus because of a miracle or theology lesson. Rather, it was through his brother's testimony that he found Jesus. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus. This one individual not only changed the trajectory of his brother's life but church history as a whole. His life exemplified the understanding of not needing fame in order to still have an impact. What is your goal — is it recognition or reward from heaven? In this message, we are encouraged to go beyond our external images and take an internal reflection on who we are. Far too often we value human praise above praise from our Heavenly Father leading to chaos in our identity. We seek validation from different sources, leaving us lost. Pastor Filmore challenges us to confront the dangers of wanting to be perceived as good rather than actually being good. We are reminded of the importance found in how we walk with God in private. If we take care of our private lives, our public lives will take care of themselves. Influence is in God's control. Our security is found in Jesus, not in what we do.

This past weekend, twenty-six congregation members entered a new chapter in their faith walk. Onechurch's first Baptism Sunday marked our second week at Nippon Kan Theatre. The story God is writing in Seattle is visible. Before stepping into baptisms, Pastor Filmore kicked off a new series of messages based on The Book of John. The Apostle John, one of the twelve disciples and credited for writing this book, gives us his account of the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. John was one of Jesus' closest friends and through his writing he communicates his purpose very clearly: for people to find life in Jesus' name. At some points, you may feel comforted while at others challenged. Starting with the first eighteen verses in the first chapter of John, Pastor Filmore elaborates that we cannot afford to misunderstand who God is. We cannot afford to misunderstand what God is like either. There is the danger of placing our identity in others or in what we do rather than who God is and what that says to our lives. What's the first thing that crosses your mind when you think about God? How has that shaped your life? We can't make assumptions about God if don't take the time to investigate who He is. In this message, we are encouraged to seek to know God through the person of Jesus. We are walked through the relationship that can be built by getting to know God's son. Fully God and fully human, scripture explains to us that Jesus is God's message to us. Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. There is a God who you can know, not just know about. You can never tell Jesus, "You don't get it." He wants to build intimacy with you.

Onechurch spent this past weekend in celebration. Sunday, September 29th, 2024 marked a major milestone for our church: Grand Opening! As the first message from our new venue, Nippon Kan Theatre, Pastor Filmore Bouldes shares a word of grace, hope, and reconciliation. We often tend to think that our value before God is predicated on how well we behave or what we know. Our minds are filled with our merits and accomplishments. Many of us like to live as if God grades our lives on a curve. Not only that, but we set other people as our standard in the midst of having these thought patterns. In the process, heaven becomes an image where good people abide and we forget that we are saved by the grace of God. Speaking from the Parable of the Lost Sheep, Luke 15:1-7, and Mark 2:17, Pastor Filmore reminded us of Jesus counteracting cultural perspectives of self-righteousness and good merits. During his ministry, Jesus was disliked for hanging around those disapproved by religious leaders. But why did He do this? Because He sought the lost. He pursues them. Heaven is not where good people go because Jesus doesn't search for good people - He searches for those who need healing. We don't serve a God who meets us halfway but searches for us intensely. The intensity of a search is predicated on the value of what is being searched. Onechurch is here to show the city of Seattle that there is a God who loves. This church started to join the pursuit God was already on. We are pulled to God not by our words, efforts, or accomplishments but by grace. In this message, we are called to stop trusting our own perceived goodness and fully trust Jesus as the guide to our lives. God has a bigger picture for our lives and our city. God doesn't love from a distance. Get excited. Jesus is calling us to join the celebration in heaven.

God’s new mission in your life brings changes, but people are being prepared to walk with you. The story of Paul is no coincidence. This message is not only a testament to the power and suddenness of God, but also the beauty of the church. Saul, his Jewish name, was changed to Paul because now he wanted to relate easily to those God called him towards. Paul changed his name because God changed his mission. Along the way, Ananias met him in obedience to God’s calling. We are an instrument and the hands that hold us change the outcome.

Don't live in that fear forever. Do you remember the first time you felt fear? The first time consciously feeling afraid? We may have fears we still carry with us from our past, ones we hold in the present, or those that arrive in the future. We all face fear. That said, this weekend we were reminded that in the same way Jesus empowered His disciples, He empowers us today. God's divine ability for our lives is the power we need. The early church reflected what God is still calling us towards today. Jesus called his disciples to be witnesses, which holds responsibility in itself, but He didn't leave them alone. | The Miracle Includes Me | 11 Sep 2024 | 00:36:01 | |
Many people want to witness a miracle, but fewer want to work for it. In this episode, Pastor Filmore shares the story of Lazarus, covering John 11:38-44. We find Jesus, powerful as He is, choosing to involve others in this miracle. From Martha rolling the grave's stone aside, to others unwrapping the once-dead Lazarus' graveclothes, this miracle required work. Jesus didn't need others to perform this miracle, but Lazarus' full freedom didn't happen until people got involved. We need both Jesus and the church. This message encourages us to look beyond ourselves and notice the church surrounding us. Pastor Filmore asks us to embark on God's vision for our church. We are not only connected to Jesus but also to His body. God is moving within Seattle, and the truth is, we're being asked to be part of it. The miracles we want our neighbors to experience need our involvement; the miracles we want to experience ourselves will need others. God wants to use His people to transform each other. Revival takes intention & doing more than watching from the sidelines. We are called to be part of the miracle.

| The Devil Doesn't Live Here | 04 Sep 2024 | 00:31:20 | |
Holding anger makes a bed for the devil, but forgiveness leads to his eviction. This past Sunday, Pastor Filmore broke down Ephesians 4:25-32. Written by Paul, we find a letter addressing and calling the church of Ephesus towards unity. Specifically, we find Paul calling out one emotion that has led to broken unity: anger. To grow close to God means growing close to one another, but we see how one emotion can break havoc in our relationships. One emotion can give "a foothold to the devil." That doesn't have to be the route our church chooses though; it can be controlled. This emotion can leave a bed made in our house, so how do we make sure the Devil is fully out? Forgiveness. Forgiveness is Eviction. This one word is not easy at all. We all have complex pasts and stories, and Pastor Filmore acknowledges that in this message. But we are also encouraged that our hearts are homes for the Holy Spirit and unity. Healing is possible, but we have to be specific about our pain. General forgiveness will not heal specific pain, so we need to be specific even with our forgiveness. Forgiveness isn't easy, but we have the power to forgive just as Christ forgave us. It is time to heal.

Don’t trade what you want most for what you want now. Don’t take the stew. This past Sunday, Pastor Filmore walked us through Genesis 25 where we find firstborn Esau hungry and tired from being out all day. Looking for something to quickly satisfy him, he ultimately sells his birthright to his younger brother Jacob. And what did that sale include? A meal of stew. Don't accept, trade, much less eat the stew. We don’t have to sell our birthright for a temporary meal. Because have you ever had a well-cooked meal? When you experience something great and truly delightful, stew no longer has much depth. This message ultimately reminds us of the promise we have with Jesus. Being born again into the family of God, no matter our family background, gives us a birthright. We were created for more than stew and temporary pursuits. Saying "no" isn't the end of the story. Our power is found in who receives our "yes."

The grace of God meets you where you are, but it doesn't keep you where you are. This past Sunday, Pastor Filmore taught from the Old Testament story of Elijah, found in 1 Kings 19. We find a prophet who, even amidst holding great faithfulness, is afraid. A man who has confronted hundreds of people yet is still brought to fear by one person. A fear and spiritual low so severe that it takes him to the wilderness where he asks God to take his life. Have you ever been so faithful in one chapter of your life and then so fearful in another? What can you expect from God when you are at your lowest? Within your lows have you asked yourself, "When Is God With Us?"

Faith hears the rain before it sees the cloud. In this declarative message, we are challenged yet also encouraged of the hope brought when we make God's voice the loudest voice around us. Though we may sometimes see Old Testament heroes like Elijah as extraordinary, we are beautifully reminded that he was human just like us. You don't have to be more human than you are right now. Faith comes by hearing, and through prayer we can prepare ourselves to listen to the clouds bringing the rain to end the drought. It is time to pray.

The existence of faith in our lives doesn't equate to faith changing our lives. Sunday marked week seven of our “Monday to Sunday: Living with Everyday Faith” sermon series, covering the book of James. As we continue, we study chapter four where James addresses communities experiencing spiritual compromise: having a foundation of faith but living and planning for a future as if God didn't exist. Communities where there was the belief in the authority of scripture, the Holy Trinity, and a divine future, but their alignment with God wasn't matching it. In this episode, Pastor Filmore speaks to us about The Christian Atheist: someone who declares faith in God but lives as if God didn't exist. Culture often creates a habit of control, planning, and personal agendas, but we are encouraged as Christians to humble our perspective through humility, gratitude, and allowing God to ultimately guide our path. We all know what we have been through in life, and the Gospel shares light onto a beautiful future. Hitting rock bottom like the prodigal son isn't necessary to change the trajectory of our lives. A short sentence of a question can lead us to be greatly challenged: will you trust God?

God’s best is the best for us — but how often do we get stuck trying to please people rather than God? We continue our “Monday to Sunday: Living with Everyday Faith” sermon series; a twelve-week study within the book of James. This week we dove into chapter four, where James addresses communities experiencing spiritual compromise: being on fire for the Lord yet making decisions that lead towards unfaithfulness to Him. Pastor Filmore teaches us that spiritual compromise festers when we develop close friendship and obedience to the world around us rather than God. Even small acts of disobedience leave us calloused and pull us from God’s beauty. We become self-centered in our thinking, desires, and actions. This poses two questions: Why do we naturally struggle to submit ourselves to our Father? How do we remain faithful to Jesus? We are walked through Pastor Filmore’s proposed solution to remain faithful to Jesus. A journey in faith that is joyous, where even submission, as counter-intuitive as it may sound, leads to peace. A journey ultimately filled with grace.
