Welcome back to On The Fly with Jon Gill – this is a special episode with helicopter stunt pilot Fred North. Fred has so many amazing stunt credits to his name which include Bond movies, Mission Impossible, Fast and Furious and a slate of collaborations – and in the interview you here how collaborative they are – collaborations with Michael Bay including this months “Ambulance” with Jake Gyllenhaal.
There are only a handful of people world who can do what he does… and even then, it’s fair to say Fred is one of a kind and very much in demand.
If you don’t already I highly recommend connecting with him on Instagram (@fred_north) or LinkedIn to catch up on the behind the scenes clips he shares so regularly.
But it’s also very cool to hear how he got his start and how entrepreneurial he was in making his mark and so we talk about his experiences as a pilot, what turned him on to it in the first place and his regime for keeping mentally fit in a an industry where accidents are generally not due to mechanical, but human error.
The podcast is on a bit of a break for now while work is busy but I hope to capture a whole load of content at MoJoFest next month which is happening in London for the first time and is partnered with the Media Production and Technology show next month and subscribe and keep an eye out for new content very soon.

This is episode 7 with Sarah Gershman – you’ll notice she doesn’t zone out once during this pod chat!
And that's because she is an Executive Speech Coach and Presentation Skills Trainer in Washington, D.C.
No matter who or where you are right now, a big chunk of the last few months has probably been spent talking to people on a screen through Zoom, Skype, FaceTime and any number of video chat apps…
And on the plus side, no doubt they’ve saved our sanity (as well as our businesses) but it’s exhausting… especially for work where it’s less about the chat and more about concentration and productivity.
And so if you relate to any of that I think you’ll enjoy this chat…
Sarah wrote an article about this for The Harvard Business Review, called “Stop Zoning out on Zoom” – and it was a real eye opener for me and I had to know more. In this conversation Sarah expands on the topics in her articles (she also wrote another about conference calls) and talks about hosts, and participants can get more out of video and conference calls and I hope you’ll find it really helpful.
Rob is brilliant at getting people to market their films and market them well for film festivals. I contributed to the 2019 festival and for the first time I was thinking about promo images, social media content for the festival to use to promote my film. It was down to Rob and his experience as a festival organiser and it absolutely paid off.
Non-filmmakers out there might be wondering what’s in this episode for them? All I can say is that what I learned from Rob is (ironically) what I’ve been telling people in comms for years about their blog posts, websites, their businesses, etc. It's so easy to forget this stuff in a different context and yet it's all basically the same. It's self promotion:
Thinking about your audience
Thinking about your story and nailing that pitch
Being brutal with information and cutting it back to be as concise as possible
So whatever you do, if there's an element of promotion (or something that you missing and could be using these techniques) then there’s something to learn here.

After a few weeks off were back with some great new episodes and this one is no exception.
OnTheFly is about creative, inventive people who innovate in some way using technology.
Now this pod is an OnTheFly extra – and it features my guest from episode 4, SJ van Breada a filmmaker in South Africa who, like me, specialises in using mobile devices. Also like me she was a finalist last year in #FilmicFest and won the "Best Documentary" category. I am sooo glad I submitted to the "Made on Mobile" category because her film, Jane Digby, about a South African painter, is absolutely stunning.
Anyway, after the podcast we got talking about film festivals – it’s only 11 minutes but I thought it was worth sharing her experience because there are plenty of scams out there and Sarah gives you tips on how to avoid them and the strategy she's employed to get the most out of festivals, where she thinks the value is and so on...

This is episode 5 with English YouTuber Robbie Cumming!
Robbie has been documenting his narrowboat life on the canals of the UK for several years. He captures everything on his mobile phone and edits on a tablet and posts to YouTube where he currently has just over 17,000 subscribers.
YouTube and Canal Boat Diaries (BBC)
About a year ago he was approached by BBC Four to adapt his YouTube format into a short series of TV episodes. Subsequently five episodes of Canal Boat Diaries were broadcast in October 2019. Series two is currently filming under lockdown conditions.
Amazingly Robbie is using the same mobile approach with some additional GoPro and drone footage from the BBC side of production.
We talk about his process and what this means for the future of TV and mobile content creators.

This is episode 3 with Christian Payne aka Documentally
He’s got a very varied background –
He was in a band, he was a press photographer... and he’s travelled… a lot..!
Now
He’s settled into an equally diverse mix of journo-documen-technologist, particularly knowledgable regarding all things audio... but the bottom line is that he’s a great example of someone who has carved their own furrow and made it his job.
In this episode we talk about social media, how he’s structured his business model, the secret life of his Italian grandmother… and there’s more, so much more. We said we'd keep it short but after a couple of hours we wrapped things up and I decide to cut this into two episodes. That's not to say it'll be two 60 minute runs because there's a metal/grunge music tangent that will never see the light of day.
So part two will follow in a week or two..!?

Welcome to episode 2 of my "On The Fly" podcast
This episodes guest is Ireland based photographer Tim Bingham, who specialises in street photography. He uses both a Fuji mirrorless and a Samsung 9S. By his own reckoning 80% of the time it's the phone.
I highly recommend you check out his Instagram feed as well as his website for further visual stimulation.
But if you're here to rest your eyes and focus on your ears then what follows is nearly an hour of what motivates Tim photographically, his process, tips for getting candid and intimate portraits and a forthcoming competition #ShotWithBingham. (For legal reasons I have to say that the last thing is not actually a thing. But it should be!)
