Ep 2 • Is Resistance to Rest Causing Your Period Problems?21 Feb 202300:41:39

Today, I wanted to talk about something frequently on my mind, that I witness in myself, loved ones, and clients: resistance to rest. In our menstrual cycle, there are times when naturally, our bodies desire to slow down, go inward & contract. These times - usually in the luteal & menstrual phases - are so important for processing emotions, trauma, limiting beliefs and highlighting where in our lives we need to take action or make adjustments. What happens when we consistently 'push through' these default times for rest and resist slowing down? What are we communicating with our bodies? Personally, and from my clinical perspective, I see this as a huge underlying factor for period pain, pre-menstrual syndrome and other symptoms of hormonal imbalance. This easily adds up to a much bigger picture of 'unwellness', when we consider that each phase of our cycle influences the next, and each cycle influences the next, and so on. It's time to break these societal patterns & make friends with slowing down, stillness and rest. Our health & hormones depend on it.

    A bit more of a personal share for this ep, about some "ouch" thoughts & feels that rose to the surface recently in regards to my relationship with the Pill (aka oral hormonal contraception).

    In a world in which we're so disconnected from our Rites of Passage as females (birth, menarche, pregnancy, menopause, death), little teenage Karinda was looking for meaning & womanly "worthiness" in a pharmaceutical drug that shut off her menstrual cycles & hormone production. How ironic that in looking to feel like more of a woman, I was shutting off the precise biology that is the source of my feminine power.

    In this share, I'm processing some of my grief for this past self & debunking the "logic" of putting a whole generation of girls onto synthetic hormones.

    So PCOS has a new name. Everyone, welcome PMOS! (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome). And honestly? I have feelings. Some of them good, some of them are classic naturopathic beef with the system.

    My luteal phase helped me make $500. I know that sounds like a stretch — but hear me out.

    In this episode I share the real story of a car that sat in my front yard for four months, a mechanic with questionable diagnostic skills (and a GP analogy that writes itself), and the simple reframe that finally got it sorted — in under 24 hours, during the phase of my cycle where energy is naturally lower.

    From there I go through all four cycle phases — menstruation, follicular, ovulation, and luteal — and what tasks are genuinely easier or harder in each. Not as a rigid schedule, but as a way of understanding why the engine runs differently at different points in your cycle, and how to stop pushing uphill when you don't have to.
