Lorry Wagner, LEEDCo21 Jun 201900:42:31

Our guest this episode is Lorry Wagner, president of LEEDCo, the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation, and the developer of Icebreaker Wind.

LEEDCo is fairly unique as an offshore wind developer in that it’s a non-profit organization rather than a for-profit developer.  So we start our conversation with the story of LEEDCo’s formation, and then we discuss the Icebreaker Wind project, soon to be the nation’s first and only offshore wind project in fresh waters. We cover the project details, where it stands in the permitting and approval process and the expected construction timetable. Lorry discusses his approach to partnering with Tier 1 suppliers and other businesses to make the project happen, and shares his thoughts on ways to develop a domestic supply chain of local content to serve this new industry. Lorry shares his observations about how the Business Network and the IPF — the Network’s International Partnering Forum conference — have evolved and grown, and we close with him sharing a neat but unexpected development with Icebreaker Wind.

In our conversation Lorry mentioned that Icebreaker Wind has received 13 of the 14 approvals it needs to move forward. Just a couple weeks after we recorded this episode, the project achieved an agreement with staff at the Ohio Power Siting Board. Lorry is optimistic that this agreement will move the project that much closer to getting final approval from the Board and hopefully a permit this fall.

Walter Cruickshank and Jim Bennett, BOEM19 Dec 201800:26:56

Our guests this episode are Walter Cruickshank and Jim Bennett, the Acting Director and the Program Manager for Offshore Renewables, respectively, at BOEM – the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which is the agency responsible for all energy leases in federal waters.

Last week BOEM held an online auction for three wind energy areas south of Massachusetts. The auction was scheduled for one day but because there were so many rounds of bidding, BOEM had to extend the bidding into a second day. Not only that, the winning bid amounts blew away all of BOEM’s previous offshore wind leases. So naturally we begin the conversation by discussing the auction results – why they are so impressive, what the details are and what’s next for the winning bidders. Walter and Jim discuss how the industry has changed in just these past three years since these same lease areas were first offered at auction with no bidders, and then expand the conversation to talk about some of BOEM’s other offshore wind activity around the country, and what milestones they anticipate in the coming months and years. We look ahead to next year’s IPF at which BOEM always has a strong presence, and we close with Walter and Jim each reflecting on the state of the US offshore wind industry today and what it means for them personally having been involved in it from the very beginning.

We then talk about Governor Andrew Cuomo’s vision for clean energy in New York and how offshore wind fits into it. We discuss some of the specific ways in which NYSERDA is moving the industry forward, including a Supply Chain Forum it is hosting on November 15. We discuss the need for stakeholder outreach, the importance of regional cooperation, and partnership with the federal government. We look ahead to next year’s IPF for which NYSERDA is the host sponsor, and we close by looking at where things stand with NYSERDA’s upcoming 800 MW offshore wind solicitation.

Joe Fiordaliso, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities19 Sep 201800:23:53

Our guest for this episode is Joe Fiordaliso, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.

It hasn’t even been a full year since Governor Phil Murphy’s administration took office, and already New Jersey has quickly vaulted to a leadership position in offshore wind. In our conversation, President Fiordaliso discusses what this year has been like for him so far and what the role of offshore wind is in helping the state meet its clean energy goals. Our conversation covers New Jersey’s strategic planning process, its approach to regionalization, ORECs and more.

President Fiordaliso and I sat down for the interview on September 10. As an example of just how fast things are moving in New Jersey, just one week after our interview the BPU voted unanimously to issue a solicitation for 1,100 megawatts of offshore wind, America’s largest single-state solicitation in history. The application window is already open. Bids are due by December 28th and the Board expects to act on the applications by July 1st of next year.

The Future of Wind is Floating (Season 3 Ep 5)30 Jun 202100:43:39

The U.S. is poised to emerge as a leader in the floating offshore wind space. In late May, the Biden Administration continued its efforts to jumpstart the U.S. offshore wind industry by advancing offshore wind areas off of Northern and Central California. Off the West Coast, and in several other regions around the U.S., significant water depths will require deployment of floating offshore wind turbines. Siemens Gamesa’s Abby Watson, Mainstream Renewable Power’s Paula Major, and Principle Power’s Amisha Patel – three influential women in floating offshore wind – join host Brandon Burke to discuss this massive opportunity for U.S. clean energy leadership and innovation. They’ll address permitting floating offshore wind platforms, intersections with hydrogen and offshore oil and gas, export opportunities, and the factors necessary to long-term success in this cutting-edge clean energy industry.

California's Offshore Wind Future (Season 3 Ep 4)25 May 202100:54:27

California, the world’s fifth largest economy, has some of the best offshore wind resources in U.S. waters. The state’s ambitious climate legislation, SB-100, calls for 100 percent clean, carbon-free electricity by 2045. To-date, solar has driven significant changes in California’s energy mix but on its own cannot ensure the state’s clean energy goals. Right now there is an incredible opportunity for floating offshore wind to contribute to California’s clean energy mix. California State Assemblymember David Chiu joins host Brandon Burke to discuss California's AB-525 offshore wind legislation and the opportunities it will provide the energy-hungry state.
