Episode 115 with Leadville 100 MTB Winner, Melisa Rollins27 Aug 202401:07:26

Send us a text

In this week's episode we talk to Leadville 100 MTB Winner, Melisa Rollins about:

  • How journey into mountain biking (hint: her parents are badass!)
  • Her fueling and hydration strategy for Leadville 2024 (and how that has evolved)
  • Shifting racing strategies to build more momentum and inspiration

Melisa Rollins is a professional cyclist who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. She started cycling casually in 2016 when she signed up for the Leadville Trail 100 MTB on a whim— a race her parents had been racing every year for nearly 2 decades. Crossing the finish line in Leadville that year lit a fire in her, and she went back almost every year with the simple goal of being faster than her previous self. In 2021 her result at Leadville led her to her first pro-contract with Team Twenty24. Here, she had the opportunity to become a more well-rounded bike racer and race many disciplines: road, gravel, mountain bike, time trial, and criteriums. She learned she loves racing just about any discipline on two wheels, and is always eager to spread positivity on the bike.

Episode 106 with runner & Naval Officer Paul Johnson: Running Across the United States04 Jun 202400:52:30

Send us a text

In this week's episode we talk to runner and Naval Office, Paul Johnson about:

  • The logistics of running across the United States
  • Raising money for Team Red, White and Blue
  • Fueling for 3,000 miles in 52 days (and change)

In 2018 Naval Officer Paul Johnson went on his first deployment overseas to Spain. While it led to amazing opportunities, it was a difficult tour that weighed heavily on him and his fellow Sailors. His next duty station took him to San Diego in 2021, and once removed from the constant stressful environment of his first deployment, he began noticing the issues he had been dealing with, like persistent sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. He had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism, but his narrative began shifting in 2022, when a Marine friend asked Paul to train and run the Marine Corps Marathon. He trained for months, and they both ended up finishing the marathon in under 3 hours, and receiving their Boston Qualifier. During this time, he realized how much running helped him cope with the anxiety/depression symptoms he was experiencing. In January 2023, with a move to the East Coast, he started a run streak. This quickly evolved into entering the ultra scene, running 100 mile races by April 2023. Running was his therapy, and he found release and escape in a positive way. This year (2024), he tackled the TransCon, running 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise awareness & funds for mental health issues facing veterans through Team Red White and Blue, which exists to enrich the lives of veterans by providing opportunities to build a healthier lifestyle.

  • Approaches to fueling & training for multi-week and multi-day adventures
  • His upcoming Triple Crown attempt
  • The realities of two weeks on the trail

Ulrich Bartholmoes, also called "uba," is 37 years old and lives in Girona, Spain and Munich, Germany. In 2018 he came 4th on the Tour du Mont Blanc in France. Researching even longer races, he discovered bike packing and the world of unsupported ultra races.

Since he entered his first unsupported race – the Transpyrenees – in 2019 he finished 21 ultra long distance events with something between 700 and 4,300 kilometers nonstop. Ulrich is the overall winner of 16 ultracycling races and record holder for the fastest known time on several routes. Ulrich achieved his greatest success in summer 2023, winning the 4,300-kilometer mountain bike race “Tour Divide“ from Canada to the Mexican border of the USA in the second-fastest time ever recorded under extremely challenging conditions with rain, heavy mud, and intense heat towards the end of the race.

Holiday Replay: Alexey Vermuelen on how he's learned from nutrition mistakes for better performance28 Dec 202300:59:48

Send us a text

We hope everyone is having a happy and healthy holiday season. While we're on holiday break, we're bringing back a few of our top episodes of 2023, and this episode with pro cyclist Alexey Vermuelen is one of our favorites. We talked all about his nutrition experience and evolution, mistakes he learns from - so you don't have to - and training with the fastest cycling dog, Sir Willie the Weiner. Enjoy this episode!

Alexey Vermeulen is an American cyclist who grew up racing on the road after getting into the sport through kids triathlon and inspiration from his grandfather (Opa). After spending two years in the World Tour with Jumbo Visma, Alexey pivoted towards the dirt (gravel & MTB) believing that the sponsorship model in professional cycling was flawed and that he could make a bigger impact where the barrier for entry was lower. Vermeulen has become famous on the circuit for training with Sir Willie the Weiner, a long-haired miniature dachshund that he carries in a backpack while riding. Recent results include winning BWR California, and Iceman Cometh in 2022.

  • Making FKT attempts
  • How he got into mountain biking & gravel riding
  • How he fuels for training, racing and in the off-season

Born and raised outside Austin, Tex., Payson McElveen relocated to Durango, CO in 2012 to pursue Exercise Science at collegiate cycling powerhouse Fort Lewis College as well as his dream of becoming a professional mountain biker. Following graduation in 2016, his career began to take off, but not necessarily in the manner he'd expected. Rather than pursue the traditional route of XC that involves World Cup racing and Olympic aspirations, he gravitated towards longer events after a career-altering experience at the 6-day Mongolia Bike Challenge. A year later, he won his first professional national title at the 2017 Marathon Mountain Bike Championships, and a second title in 2018, successes that helped land dream sponsor Red Bull. This further spurred a commitment to longer events which were exploding in popularity at the time. Now splitting his time between off-road endurance disciplines and a focus on the Lifetime Grand Prix, Payson has continued to enjoy success at the biggest gravel events in the world, including three wins at The Mid-South, and podium finishes at the Leadville 100, Unbound 200, SBT GRVL and more. While his athletic achievements are notable, Payson strives to have a multi-faceted impact on the sport. Through his popular “The Adventure Stache” podcast, films, and innovative physical challenges such as FKTs and a first single push crossing of Iceland, he hopes to inspire riders to think about the sport in new ways. While racing remains his first and greatest love on the bike, he hopes to have an impact that extends far beyond the finish line.

She doesn't consider herself a natural talent on the bike, so she commits to putting in hard work to compete, while loving the humble and hardworking attitude cycling requires. In this week's episode, we talk to runner Rachael Norfleet about:

  • Her transition from swimming to triathlon world champs and eventually to trail running & ultramarathons
  • Battling an auto-immune disorder and REDs, and her path to health
  • How she fuels now

Rachael Norfleet is a mom, a trail runner, and a sales professional. She grew up in the Midwest and swam competitively into college. After collegiate swimming, she found triathlon and raced at a high level for 5 years, competing three times in world championship races. She took an almost 2-year hiatus from sport in 2018 to heal after experiencing a thyroid storm that turned her life and health upside down. During this time, she moved to California for work and began hiking all around SoCal. She fell in love with the trails and as her health came around, she began running more than hiking. She carried this love for trail running through her pregnancy and began racing on the trails more seriously in 2022.

She now lives in Bozeman, Montana with her husband, who is a pilot, and her 2-year-old son, Callum. After working in the neurosurgical medical device industry for 6 years, she's going back to school in 2024 to pursue nursing. Now, they prioritize spending meaningful time together as a family and we spend as much of their days outside as they can skiing, hiking, running and hunting collectively as a family.
