✨ あります = there is / have
✨ います = there is / be
✨ 歩（ある）きます = walk
✨ 曲（ま）がります = turn
✨ 渡（わた）ります = cross
✨ 止（と）まります = stop
✨ 待（ま）ちます = wait
✨ 聞（き）きます = ask
✨ 教（おし）えます = tell / show
✨ 急（いそ）ぎます = hurry

You’ll also review verb forms:

👉 dictionary form
👉 て-form
👉 ない-form
👉 た-form

For example:

🏪 この近（ちか）くにスーパーがあると思（おも）います。
➡️ I think there is a supermarket near here.

🚶 天気（てんき）がよかったら、駅（えき）まで歩（ある）きます。
➡️ If the weather is nice, I’ll walk to the station.

🏦 右（みぎ）に曲（ま）がると、銀行（ぎんこう）があります。
➡️ If you turn right, there is a bank.

What is the difference between ～てもらいます and ～てくれます?

Both are used when someone does something for you, but the focus is different.

✨ ～てもらいます

私（わたし）は友達（ともだち）に引（ひ）っ越（こ）しを手伝（てつだ）ってもらいました。
➡️ I received my friend’s help with moving.

👉 私（わたし）は Aさんに～てもらいます
The focus is on me receiving someone’s action.

✨ ～てくれます

友達（ともだち）が私（わたし）の引（ひ）っ越（こ）しを手伝（てつだ）ってくれました。
➡️ My friend helped me with moving.

👉 Aさんが（私に）～てくれます
The focus is on someone giving an action to me.

💡 These two sentences can describe the same event, but from a different point of view!

In this lesson, you’ll practice useful expressions such as:

📝 先生（せんせい）に作文（さくぶん）を直（なお）してもらいました。
🚗 友達（ともだち）に駅（えき）まで送（おく）ってもらいました。
🗺️ 友達（ともだち）が京都（きょうと）を案内（あんない）してくれました。
📷 お店（みせ）の人（ひと）が使（つか）い方（かた）を説明（せつめい）してくれました。

How do you say “I do something for someone” or ask someone to do something for you in Japanese?

In this lesson, you'll learn two useful patterns:

✨ Vて-form + あげます
Use 「～てあげます」 when you do something for someone.

📦 友達（ともだち）の荷物（にもつ）を運（はこ）んであげました。
➡️ I carried my friend’s things for them.

📚 弟（おとうと）の宿題（しゅくだい）を手伝（てつだ）ってあげました。
➡️ I helped my younger brother with his homework.

🚉 友達（ともだち）を駅（えき）まで連（つ）れて行（い）ってあげました。
➡️ I took my friend to the station.

💡 「～てあげます」 is usually used for friends, family, and people close to you. We generally avoid using it for teachers, bosses, or other people of higher status.

And you’ll also learn:

✨ Vて-form + くれませんか
Use 「～てくれませんか」 to ask someone to do something for you.

🙋 ちょっと手伝（てつだ）ってくれませんか。
➡️ Could you help me?

🈶 この漢字（かんじ）を読（よ）んでくれませんか。
➡️ Could you read this kanji for me?

Do you know the difference between 「あげます」「もらいます」 and 「くれます」?

In this review lesson, you'll practice these three useful verbs through simple conversations!

✨ あげます = give
✨ もらいます = receive
✨ くれます = someone gives something to me

For example:

🍕 マットさんはイソルベさんにピザのクーポンをあげました。
➡️ Matt gave Isolve a pizza coupon.

🍕 イソルベさんはマットさんにピザのクーポンをもらいました。
➡️ Isolve received a pizza coupon from Matt.

These two sentences describe the same event, but the subject is different.

💡 POINT

👉 Aさん → Bさん = あげます

AさんはBさんにプレゼントをあげました。

👉 Aさん → 私（わたし）= くれます

友達（ともだち）が私にバッグをくれました。

👉 私 ← Aさん = もらいます

私は友達にバッグをもらいました。

「もらいます」 and 「くれます」 can also describe the same event:

🎁 私は友達にバッグをもらいました。
🎁 友達が私にバッグをくれました。

Same event, different point of view! ✨

How do you say “someone gave me something” in Japanese?

In this lesson, you'll learn the useful pattern:

✨ Aさんが（私に）Nをくれます

Use 「くれます」 when someone gives something to you.

👉 Someone → me = くれます

For example:

🎁 友達（ともだち）が誕生日（たんじょうび）にバッグをくれました。
➡️ My friend gave me a bag for my birthday.

🍪 学生（がくせい）がお菓子（かし）をくれました。
➡️ A student gave me some sweets.

⌚ 母（はは）が時計（とけい）をくれました。
➡️ My mother gave me a watch.

📚 おばあちゃんが本（ほん）をくれました。
➡️ My grandmother gave me a book.

✈️ 友達（ともだち）が旅行（りょこう）のお土産（みやげ）をくれました。
➡️ My friend gave me a souvenir from a trip.

💡 POINT

「あげます」 and 「くれます」 both mean “give,” but the direction is different.

👉 私（わたし）→ ほかの人 = あげます
私は友達（ともだち）にプレゼントをあげました。

👉 ほかの人 → 私（わたし）= くれます
友達（ともだち）が私にプレゼントをくれました。

「私に」 is often omitted:

友達（ともだち）が私（わたし）にバッグをくれました。
→ 友達がバッグをくれました。✨

What does 「～と」 mean in Japanese?

In this lesson, you'll learn the useful pattern:

✨ V（dictionary form）＋と

Use 「～と」 when one action naturally leads to a result.

👉 A ＋と、B
When A happens, B naturally follows.

You can use this pattern to explain how things work, give directions, and talk about things that naturally happen.

For example:

🎁 ハンドルを回（まわ）すと、カプセルが出（で）てきます。
➡️ When you turn the handle, a capsule comes out.

🥤 ボタンを押（お）すと、ジュースが出（で）ます。
➡️ When you press the button, a drink comes out.

🏪 二（ふた）つ目（め）の角（かど）を右（みぎ）へ曲（ま）がると、コンビニがあります。
➡️ When you turn right at the second corner, there is a convenience store.

🏥 まっすぐ行（い）くと、病院（びょういん）があります。
➡️ If you go straight, there is a hospital.

🌸 春（はる）になると、桜（さくら）が咲（さ）きます。
➡️ When spring comes, the cherry blossoms bloom.

💡 POINT

Use the dictionary form before 「と」.

回（まわ）します → 回（まわ）すと
曲（ま）がります → 曲（ま）がると
行（い）きます → 行（い）くと

With 「～と」, think about what naturally happens after A.

A happens → B naturally follows

「日本へ行ったとき、USJへ行きたいです。」

Which one should you use?

In this lesson, you'll learn the difference between:

✨ V（dictionary form）＋とき
✨ V（た-form）＋とき

The important point is not simply whether something is in the past.

👉 V（dictionary form）＋とき
The action is not finished yet.

👉 V（た-form）＋とき
The action is already finished.

For example:

🍚 ご飯を食べるとき、「いただきます」と言います。
➡️ We say “itadakimasu” before eating.

🍚 ご飯が終わったとき、「ごちそうさまでした」と言います。
➡️ We say “gochisousama deshita” after finishing the meal.

🏠 家に帰ったとき、「ただいま」と言います。
➡️ When I get home, I say “tadaima.”

✈️ 日本へ行ったとき、USJへ行きたいです。
➡️ When I go to Japan, I want to go to USJ.

💡 POINT

The た-form does not always mean past tense.

With 「～とき」, think about the order of the actions:

Is the action already finished?
Or is it not finished yet?

How do you say “when…” in Japanese?

In this lesson, you'll learn the useful pattern:

✨ ～とき（when）

Use ～とき to talk about when you do something or what you do in a certain situation.

First, with verbs:

✨ V（dictionary form）＋とき

🇺🇸 アメリカに行（い）くとき、ビザがいります。
➡️ When I go to the United States, I need a visa.

💡 寝（ね）るとき、電気（でんき）を消（け）します。
➡️ When I go to bed, I turn off the light.

📷 旅行（りょこう）するとき、カメラを持（も）って行（い）きます。
➡️ When I travel, I take a camera with me.

You can also use ～とき with the ない-form:

🥐 時間（じかん）がないとき、パンを食（た）べます。
➡️ When I don’t have time, I eat bread.

You’ll also learn how to use ～とき with adjectives:

✨ い-adjective ＋とき

💼 忙（いそが）しいとき、料理（りょうり）をしません。
➡️ When I’m busy, I don’t cook.

✨ な-adjective ＋な＋とき

📚 暇（ひま）なとき、本（ほん）を読（よ）みます。
➡️ When I’m free, I read books.

And with nouns:

✨ N ＋の＋とき

🎾 子（こ）どものとき、よくテニスをしました。
➡️ When I was a child, I often played tennis.
