Inspired by modern quilts but without knowing how to sew, Mac took a leap in 2019, bought her first sewing machine, and started creating. A quilter, garment upcycler, and community builder, Gregory Pagán-Hill, also known as Uncle Greg, is using sewing as a way to process grief, build connection, and create something meaningful from what already exists. This week on Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show, I’m joined by Uncle Greg, whose journey with sewing began at a young age when his mother enlisted him and his siblings to help teach classes after school. What once felt like a chore eventually became a lifelong skill that would return to him in a deeply meaningful way. After the loss of his brother, Gregory found his way back to quilting. The comfort of his mother’s quilts, the love of family, and a desire to live authentically led him back to the craft. Through that process, he discovered a passion for working with garments, transforming existing pieces into something new. He calls this process “editing,” and it has become a signature part of his creative voice. Gregory also saw a need for community. In response, he created Club Corduroy, a monthly meetup in the Chicago area that offers a welcoming space for queer and allied sewists to gather, create, and connect. Out of grief also came another meaningful project. Gregory hosts the podcast Stay Kind with Uncle Greg, where he revisits episodes of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood and reflects on the lessons of love, kindness, and humanity that still resonate today. Then, she met the great love of her life and moved to Maui. Which leads us to today! Although a long-time quilter, Kate is relatively new to the online quilt world, as moving to Maui forced he out of her comfort zone and onto the internet to find quilty friends! Amber Elliot is the artist/pattern designer/quilter/educator behind Alderwood Studio. She has been sewing all her life, and has always loved bringing various fabrics together to give them new life. As a child, she used her grandmother's old clothes to create new fashion for her mom to wear. Then as a teen, Amber decided that she was going to make a quilt, so she did. Since then, Amber has quilted on and off, but when she started doing it more seriously, she realized that the design and the pattern layout was her favorite part. Up to that point, Amber had never used someone else's pattern. But, realizing that she wanted to try writing her patterns, she started purchasing patterns so she could learn how it was done. As Amber was building her pattern-writing skills, she had the idea for a subscription box that would bring fun projects right to your door (or inbox). In addition to the Modern Makes box, Amber felt compelled to create a pattern-writing course for budding designers. She decided to help other people do what she struggled to do on her own. If you know anyone who has taken her course, then you know that her platform builds strong partnerships in the quilting community. Amber believes in the old adage - "a rising tide lifts all boats". And as she pursues her dreams, Amber is now one of Riley Blake's new fabric designers! Her fabric line comes out this Fall, so call your local quilt shops to request it! Tara Evans is the owner/artist/designer behind Taralee Quiltery. As a student, Tara thrived in math, science and the arts. Her main focus was to take as many classes in the arts as she could. Amanda and Tara attended rival high schools in Boise, but the two ended up in their respective schools' choir programs. Painting was Tara's original outlet, which ultimately led her to study Fine Art in college. Before graduating, she got married and soon after becoming a mother, she started sewing for them. In 2018 Tara designed and made her first quilt pattern and the rest is history! Taralee Quiltery was born from wanting to share her love of art with the world and give other people access to her creative process by purchasing her patterns to make their own art. Tara sells her patterns both printed and PDF, as well as curated bundles. If you haven't seen her Ruby Star Starry bundles that are based on popular movies, you should check them out! Tara's style has high visual impact. Her quilts are designed to be show stoppers. Her aim is to push the boundaries in her artistic style, and in the quilting community at large. Barbie Mills is a modern digital pantograph designer and long-arm quilter based in Utah. Barbie has been sewing for pretty much her whole life. She started quilting in high school and began her longarm business in 2012. Barbie was doing custom free-motion long-arming before she decided to go digital and leave the custom quilting behind. As her skills grew, so did her design portfolio, and now she has an Etsy shop full of hundreds of digital pantograph designs. Christina West is the color-obsessed owner and face behind Kindred Quilt Co. From making crib sheets and baby bedding, Christina has grown her love of fabric, color, and design through her over 9 years of sewing and quilting. Christina Miller is the owner and happy face behind Fabric Pop - an online quilt shop for modern quilters. As a lifelong crafter, Christina has always loved fabric. Chris Marchini is a sewist and quilter based in Portland, Oregon. He is the brains and personality behind Rose City Originals. Mike O'Dell is an entrepreneur at heart, so when he started planning, designing and making his own foundation paper piecing patterns, he knew he had something special. Erin Grogan is the pattern designer and founder of Love Sew Modern. She was introduced to sewing by her grandmother, a professional seamstress. As a child, Erin would fill a notebook with fashion designs and dream of growing up to become a clothing designer. On her many summer visits, Erin and her grandmother would go to Hancock Fabrics to get material and together they would sew her school wardrobe for the next year. These precious moments sparked her love for design. In 2017 Erin took her first trip to a modern quilt shop. Surrounded by all the bright and bold fabrics and modern quilts she knew in that moment she wanted to become a quilter. In January of 2020 Erin left her corporate job to focus on growing her dream, Love Sew Modern. Not only is Erin a pattern designer, but she is a sewing educator as well, teaching and instructing at conferences, guilds and in her own home. In this episode, Amanda chats with Rachel, the face behind Sew Joyful Studio. She is a pattern designer, quilter, sewist, and outdoors-woman. She lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband, and brand new baby boy! When she's not sitting at her sewing machine, you can usually find her on a bike or in the kitchen. Up until the end of 2021, she worked as a Civil Engineer. Leaving that career behind and pursuing a joy-filled life was one of the best decisions she ever made, and Sew Joyful Studio was born from that space. Rachel says the joy that she gets from sewing is unmatched, and her hope for Sew Joyful Studio is that she can use it to spread a little bit of that joy to others. Her best selling pattern is her Fanny Pack Pattern, but this year she began releasing quilt patterns, and has two available on her website now! This week on Not Your Granny's Quilt Show, we welcome in the New Year with Matt Wilding! Matt is a quilt pattern designer and all around creative guy. While being sculpture studies major at university, Matt found a connection to sourdough bread and sculpture that helped him finish his studies. The sourdough saga continued for him when he started baking for neighbors and friends during the lockdowns in 2020. While healing from a serious back injury, Matt had to find a new path that didn't have quite the same physical demand as baking. Matt turned to sewing, and produced an incredible peice called "Wings of Pride". Matt's wings won in the Quilt Creations category at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK. The magnificent wingspan features precision piecing and details that stop people in their tracks. Matt has since designed and produced the pattern for a fun 3D bag pattern called Tessellated Heart. The pattern is now available on his website and you can find so many fun hacks to the pattern on his instagram! Matt will be teaching a workshop for his through Crafty Monkies, so check that out! Today on the show Amanda talks with Maddie Kertay. She is an award-winning quilter and the founder and CEO of the BadAss Quilters Society. Maddie believes that dedicated community is far more important than a perfect quarter-inch seam or specific quilting style. A safe, supportive, and welcoming community for politically liberal quilters have been Maddie Kertay’s goal for 10 years and counting. BadAss Quilters Society specifically serves and supports politically liberal quilters with community, content, and commentary on the state of today’s quilting culture. Maddie is a long-time community builder having built her state’s first wholly inclusive and LGBTQIA-affirming homeschooling group to support her family and other progressive families like it when there was no place for her family to gather with others of a like mind at the time. Maddie is the mother to 6 children ranging in ages from 33-22 and grandmother to one, Maddie makes her home in Chattanooga TN in an old house she is restoring with her husband and way too many animals, including a rotating cast on neonatal kittens for which she is a professional foster and advocate for the most medically fragile of them year-round. Maddie is a fierce advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community of which she is a part. When not caring for kittens, slinging a hammer, or out in her garden you can find her writing on her blog to further the evolution of the larger quilting community to become a more welcoming and diverse place.
