Episode 80: The Power of Hope in Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Kristi Wilson17 sept. 202601:06:14

I sit down with integrative veterinarian Dr. Kristi Wilson of Hope Healing for Animals about her journey from conventional veterinary medicine to a more holistic and individualized approach to canine health.

Dr. Kristi shares how her family’s health challenges and her own experience with cancer changed the way she sees medicine, healing, and the care we give our dogs. We talk about nutrition, stress, environmental factors, chronic illness, and why there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution.

We explore:

  • Why food is an important foundation for better health
  • How stress, inflammation, environment, and lifestyle can affect our dogs
  • Why small changes can be more helpful than aiming for perfection
  • The importance of hope, curiosity, and asking thoughtful questions
  • How veterinarians and pet parents can protect their energy and set healthy boundaries
  • Dr. Kristi’s vision for building a stronger community of integrative practitioners
  • The growing conversation around hormones, early sterilization, and lifelong canine wellness

I loved Dr. Kristi’s honest and hopeful approach. This episode reminds us to stay open-minded, keep learning, and remember that even small changes can make a meaningful difference in our dogs’ lives.

Episode 79: Dog Emergency Signs Every Dog Lover Should Know with Dr. Lynda Loudon15 sept. 202601:07:54

What would you do if your dog suddenly collapsed, started bleeding, was vomiting repeatedly, or had a swollen, painful belly?

I’ve seen how quickly an ordinary day can turn into a life-or-death emergency, and I believe every dog parent should feel prepared—not panicked—when that moment comes.

I’m joined by emergency veterinarian Dr. Linda Loudon to talk honestly about the warning signs that mean your dog needs emergency care, what you can safely monitor at home, and how to advocate for your dog when you’re under pressure.

We talk about:
• How to recognize true emergency symptoms, including breathing problems, severe pain, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea
• The warning signs of bloat and why getting to an emergency vet quickly matters
• What pale gums, capillary refill time, and internal bleeding can tell you
• What to do when your dog is bleeding or injured
• How collars, retractable leashes, sticks, toys, and other everyday hazards can cause serious emergencies
• How to stay calm, ask the right questions, and make informed decisions when your dog needs emergency care

My hope is that this conversation helps you feel more confident, prepared, and ready to be your dog's strongest advocate when it matters most.

Episode 78: What Your Dog Knows That You Don’t with Dr. Radica Raj01 sept. 202601:07:41

I’ve known Dr. Radica for years, and she’s one of those veterinarians I’m always excited to talk to. She’s curious, intuitive, compassionate, and never afraid to question what we’ve been taught.

In this conversation, we talk about her journey from emergency medicine to integrative veterinary care, what her most memorable patients have taught her, and why she believes we need to look at the whole animal—not just the diagnosis.

We talk about:

  • Why Radica left emergency medicine and found her calling in integrative care
  • What animals can teach us about health, healing, emotions, and life
  • The incredible patients who changed the way she practices—including Quest and the dachshund who led her to platelet-rich plasma
  • The emotional and financial realities of veterinary medicine, and why truly listening to pet parents matters
  • How our own dogs can change the way we understand health—including what Pax taught me about hormones and long-term wellbeing

It’s a personal conversation about veterinary medicine, intuition, curiosity, and the animals who often end up teaching us far more than we ever expected.

Episode 77: Get to Know Your Vet with Dr. Nick Thompson10 août 202601:23:09

In this episode of Get to Know Your Vet, I sit down with holistic veterinarian Dr. Nick Thompson — a self-described “quiet rebel” whose lifelong curiosity has shaped a thoughtful, integrative approach to animal health.

We talk about real food for dogs, raw and fresh feeding, homeopathy, the influence of the pet-food industry, and why consensus is not always the same as evidence. Dr. Nick shares how his upbringing, scientific training, and early experiences with holistic medicine led him to question conventional assumptions while staying grounded in curiosity, humility, and compassion.

But this conversation goes far beyond veterinary medicine. We explore vulnerability, fatherhood, personal growth, community, purpose, and the unexpected ways life’s disappointments can guide us toward something better. Along the way, there are plenty of laughs, honest reflections, and a simple invitation for every dog guardian: start small, pay attention, and bring a little more real food and joy into your dog’s bowl.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why “consensus is not evidence”
  • The case for real, fresh food in a dog’s diet
  • How to begin adding fresh food safely and simply
  • Homeopathy, healing, and keeping an open—but discerning—mind
  • The influence of marketing on veterinary nutrition
  • What vulnerability, community, and meaningful work can teach us
  • Why trusting yourself matters when caring for your dog

Episode 76: Get to Know Your Vet with Dr. Barbara Royal: The Wild Health Secret Every Dog Owner Needs to Hear11 juil. 202601:17:03

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Barbara Royal — an integrative veterinarian, author, educator, and the founder of the Wild Health philosophy.

Dr. Royal shares her journey from growing up as the only science-minded kid in a family of artists and musicians, to working with spotted owls in Oregon, to building one of Chicago's most respected integrative veterinary practices — where she has cared for the pets of some of the world's most famous people, including Oprah.

We talk about:

  • What Wild Health really means — and the spotted owl encounter that started it all
  • Why being 100% present is the most powerful healing tool a veterinarian (or anyone) can have
  • How the energy in an exam room shapes the outcome of treatment
  • The "I Must Be Wrong" philosophy — and why admitting mistakes makes you a better doctor
  • Why boundaries transform anxious, confused dogs into calm and confident ones
  • The connection between our own patterns, guilt, and the way we show up for our animals

This conversation goes far beyond veterinary medicine. We explore focus, control, nature, purpose, and what it means to let go — including a story about a flat tire in Botswana, a full moon, and eight giraffes running across the twilight.

I hope you enjoy this honest, warm, and deeply inspiring conversation with Dr. Barbara Royal.

Episode 72: Get to Know Your Healer with Catherine Edwards29 avr. 202601:10:48

I’m so excited to sit down with my dear friend Catherine Edwards, a holistic biologist, healer, and podcaster, to explore how we can better support our dogs in today’s challenging world. Together, we open up a real, heart‑to‑heart conversation about the “toxic soup” our animals live in and how to make simple, practical changes that actually feel doable, not overwhelming.

We’ll talk about:

  • How modern toxins (food, water, EMFs, chemicals) affect our dogs’ health and behavior.
  • The core foundations of holistic dog health: real food, clean water, movement, and emotional connection.
  • Zoo pharmacognosy (animal self‑medicating), with powerful real‑life examples of dogs choosing what they need to heal.
  • How to ask better questions at the vet, recognize red flags, and stay empowered as your dog’s guardian.

Episode 68: Get to Know Your Vet with Dr. Karen Becker16 janv. 202600:45:58

In this new episode of Get to Know Your Vet, I sit down with my good friend Dr. Karen Becker for one of the most honest and surprising chats! What starts as a playful card game quickly turns into a deep dive into dog health myths, grief, resilience, and what it really means to speak the truth in veterinary medicine.

We explore the “elephants in the room” and why it can be so hard (and sometimes risky) for vets to talk about them openly. You’ll also see a side of both of us: how we cope with loss, the fear of losing memories, and the pressure of trying to show up for everyone while still staying grounded and kind to ourselves.

Episode 66: Get to Know Your Vet - Dr. Judy Morgan23 déc. 202500:56:24

This year, I had the privilege to meet some of you in Florida and Mallorca where I was presenting, and I also became friends with some of my colleagues vets and healers, I never met in person before.

Connecting with likeminded people is the reason I’m starting something new.

A new interview series I’m calling Get to Know Your Vet (GTKYV) 🐾

Each episode is a fun, relaxed, informal conversation between me and a fellow veterinarian.

But here is something different. Of course we talk dogs, but we also talk about our lives, feelings and what we do outside of work. We talk about life, our values, mistakes and lessons learned.

When you watch, I want you to feel like the three of us are sitting together, sharing stories and ideas, not being “taught” or sold anything.

Why does this matter?

Because I feel you deserve to know your vets! I thought it would be nice for your to know why we do what we do. What the question, and why we changed our mind about medicine, nutrition and healing in general.

My hope is that these conversations help you feel even more connected and supported on your dog’s health journey.

Not just because you’re getting information, but because you’re getting to know the humans beyond the vet talk.

That’s what Get to Know Your Vet is really about.

It feels especially meaningful to begin this series with someone I respect deeply and is also a great conference organizer and the community connector, Dr. Judy Morgan.

This episode goes far beyond veterinary medicine. It’s about values, marriage, grief, boundaries, leadership, and what happens when we slow down enough to truly listen.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did ❤️

Episode 61: The World Champion Dog Trainer Who Changed Everything: Susan Garrett's Secrets to Perfect Dogs06 juin 202501:09:55

In this episode, I sit down with amazing and talented Susan Garrett! World-Renowned Dog Trainer, Agility Champion & Leading Educator in Canine Behaviour, I am so grateful to have her join me as we dive into the science and evolution behind how we teach and live with dogs.

From early days growing up around animals to force-free training, we explore what it truly means to empower dogs through enrichment, understanding, and compassion.

Philosophies have shifted from dominance-based methods to reinforcement-driven, science-backed approaches—and we discuss why that change is so important for our dogs’ emotional and behavioral health.

Episode 57: Why Does My Dog Smell? Natural Treatment Plan for Skin Yeast Infections in Dogs (Malassezia)01 mai 202500:34:02

Today we’re diving nose-first into one of the most common (and misunderstood) issues: Why Do Dogs Get Stinky?!

Whether your dog's been rolling in mystery goo, battling stubborn yeasty ears, or struggling with something deeper under the surface — there's usually more to that "doggy odor" than meets the ... nose 😜

In this episode I will also share some surprising, but often common, root causes of stinky dogs and why a medicated bath might not being doing what you think — and what to do instead.

So, if you’re tired of the itch, the stink, and the constant vet visits, this episode is for you and your dog! Let’s bust some myths, explore some solutions, and get your dog back to smelling like a wildflower.

Essential Takeaways:

  • Diet matters! Processes, high-carb foods can lead to skin issues and that infamous doggy odor.
  • Yeast (Malassezia) overgrowth is often secondary, not the root cause-address the underlying health and environmental factors.
  • Don’t overlook spinal health! Injuries or tight muscles can actually contribute to skin problems and persistent odors.
  • If your dog has persistent skin issues, ask your vet for a full blood workup to rule out thyroid or adrenal problems.
  • Don’t jump straight to antifungals or antibiotics-restore balance to the skin’s microbiome first.

Episode 47: The Truth About Early Spay and Neuter with Dr. Michelle Kutzler01 févr. 202500:36:24

Dr. Michelle Kutzler's journey into understanding the impact of sterilization on dogs began with a personal experience that shook her professional beliefs.

After witnessing the devastating effects of cancer on her in-laws' Rottweilers, it sparked her curiosity about the potential link between sterilization and health issues. A pivotal lecture by Dr. David Waters opened her eyes to the crucial role of ovaries in canine longevity, challenging everything she had been taught in veterinary school.

Dr. Kutzler's research revealed that removing gonads leads to elevated luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, which can cause a myriad of health problems, including urinary incontinence, skin issues, and even cancer.

The good news is that there are hormone-sparing alternatives to traditional spaying and neutering, which can prevent reproduction while maintaining hormonal balance.

In this initial segment of our two-part discussion, we discuss these alternatives and the importance of educating both veterinarians and pet owners about the long-term health impacts of traditional sterilization methods.

Episode 41: Navigating Medical Decisions: My Personal Journey Through Surgery and Healing21 déc. 202400:26:08

In this episode of our podcast, join me, Dr. Peter Dobias, as I share my personal journey through discovering and undergoing surgery for a benign salivary gland tumour. This experience has taught me invaluable lessons about navigating the healthcare system while continuing to advocate for myself, and our pets.

Throughout this journey, I learned how essential it is to acknowledge emotions, seek second opinions, and remain proactive when facing medical uncertainty.

You’ll learn about:

  • How to be your own health advocate
  • Managing medical uncertainty
  • Tips for working effectively with healthcare providers
  • Post-surgical healing: Natural remedies, supplements, and more

Reflecting on this experience reinforced my belief in the power of good nutrition, holistic care, and finding gratitude even during life’s toughest moments. I hope my story inspires you to approach medical decisions — for yourself, your family, and your beloved pets — with confidence, curiosity, and compassion.

Tune in for an insightful and empowering episode that could change how you navigate your health journey and advocate for those you love.

Episode 40: Why traditional spay & neuter of dogs is no longer ok - a conversation with Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib14 déc. 202401:07:04

I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact of hormones on our canine companions' health and behavior, and the recent update to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) guidelines on neutering is a game-changer.

Hormones aren't just about reproduction; they're crucial for overall well-being.

When we remove them through traditional spaying and neutering, we're inadvertently causing a cascade of health issues such as an increased risk of cancers and joint issues.

My own dog, Pax, experienced many of these issues after neutering. It wasn't until we started hormone replacement therapy that I saw a dramatic improvement in his health and vitality.

The good news is we have alternatives and solutions, which we discuss in this episode.

Episode 39: Toxic positivity, wrinkles, and inner beauty24 sept. 202200:17:10

In this episode, I explain how toxic positivity leads to the perception that emotions are divided into two groups, the negative and the positive. Anger, frustration, fear, and feeling overwhelmed, are normal emotions just the same as joy, happiness, and excitement. They would not be able to exist without each other, and they are all part of being human.

I also share my thoughts on embracing your inner beauty while aging, not viewing wrinkles as a failure but as a sign of wisdom, grace, and a well-lived life.

Thank you for listening!

Episode 35: Do dogs behave better when they have more freedom?10 juin 202200:14:51

Do you know a fearful or reactive dog? What if dog restrictions and leash laws are at the core of dog behaviour issues? I’ve spoken on this topic many times, and I won’t stop until countries like the USA and Canada recognize how important dogs are to our wellbeing and that marginalizing and restricting access does not work.

I have lived in three different countries, Canada, the USA and the Czech Republic. I have seen the difference freedom, trust, and socialization make in the quality of life for people, dogs, and society.

If you are interested in igniting a dog freedom movement in your area, email me at customercare@peterdobias.com, and together we will spread the word.

Episode 32: An interview with a frontline pet rescuer in Ukraine19 avr. 202200:51:08

If there is one interview you should listen to, this is it. I had the privilege of speaking with Lana Niland, a Canadian who has been living in Ukraine since 2003. We discuss the brave work she is doing to help the people and animals of Ukraine, and how we can all contribute to her efforts.

This interview has not been edited or sugarcoated - so there is some upsetting content for animal lovers - but it will give you a balanced view of what is happening in Ukraine. If we want to change the world, we need to understand what is wrong and the media doesn't always report things accurately.

Thank you for listening, sharing, and possibly donating if you are able to through the links below. ❤️🐶✌️🇺🇦
