It's our Not About The Weather 2021 retrospective, and we are going all-in with our biggest pop culture hype and gripe of the year. Ariana, Brittany, Natalie and Karen are all here to decompress. Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest are both heavily featured, with a shout out to Dickinson as well. No, we are not shills for Apple, yes we will become so if ever they want us to be. That platform is creating a lot of great work right now. Ariana takes us through her hype regarding this year's wonderful coming of age portrayals for teenage girls, and Brittany rekindles her long-lost experience with live music.
In terms of gripes, we have a powerful and wide ranging slate of things to complain about. Brittany is concerned that America's sweetheart Steve Kornacki is being used and abused as a gimmick (Let Steve Be Steve!) and Karen is disappointed by the Melissa McCarthy movie Thunder Force, which should have been brilliant but just... wasn't. Natalie feels that while the final season of Brooklyn 99 was, in many ways, very meaningful and very conscious, it betrayed Jake Peralta at the close, and Ariana simply feels that the way people engage in fandom just isn't fun any more.
As well as our year-end hypes and gripes, the group reflects on their experience of 2021 at work and at home, and assesses whether this year was, at the end of the day, a good or bad one for them personally. Results are mixed. And a great Question of the Day sparks a fantastic discussion about all the performers who shone for us this year like never before. Be sure to stay tuned for the post credits addition. ("Nooooooooowen Wilson.") Congrats to COVID-19 on its season 3 renewal and we'll see you next year!

Episode #39 - Spiritually, We Might Still Be There
Thursday, November 18, 2021 • Duration 03:30:33
It’s the Supernatural Finale Anniversary Special! Natalie and Cass are joined by Liliana, host of the Supernatural podcast St Alphonso's Academy of Squee and recent guest contributor here on Subjectify, to talk about the Supernatural series finale, and what the hell has happened since, a year after it all ended. Join us for a very special and very long celebration slash mourning slash something as we hype and gripe the demise of the show, air our worries about what’s become of the fandom, and beg the cast and crew to just be normal about gay people.
These shownotes are going to have a bit of a different structure to our usual here on Not About The Weather, for three reasons: a) this is an extremely long episode, b) it's probably going to be listened to by people other than our normal audience, and c) there may be parts that you want to hear and parts that you don't. So for the first time ever, we're including a detailed list of time stamps.
We respect that some fans do not want to engage with any positivity about the Supernatural finale, however Not About The Weather is always structured to include both a "Hype" and "Gripe" from each host about their topic of choice, and, although no one here loves the finale, all the hosts on this episode have tried to take it in good faith.
If you don't want to listen to our finale-related hypes - especially if you are triggered by Dean's death - that is all good. We don't really talk about it in detail, but everyone on this episode does accept that plot point as well as the Heaven endgame. We'd appreciate it if you keep things civil and don't come for our throats about the fact we don't have a moral objection to it. Just feel free to skip straight to 1 hour 30 mins to hear our grievances - that's where stuff starts getting really passionate, particularly the 45 minute segment griping about the attitude shift to "interpret" Castiel's queerness away. Good times.
Here's the detailed breakdown by time stamp:
0m 30s - Introduction of hosts.
6m 53s - We recap the plot of the Supernatural finale in the off chance any listeners haven't seen it.
11m 40s - Most people we know hate the finale very badly, and wanted or were expecting a happier ending where everyone lives a good life finally free of Chuck. We agree this was a very desirable ending, however, we do not hate the finale as much as some people do - in part because we were anticipated something much worse. We check in on how Liliana is feeling about it these days.
- We get the aim of Dean's death, but we don't have to like it. But we all agree that Sam's ending was possibly the worst of them all, just in terms of what it implied about his character's personality and growth and decency and all that. Even though they died, Dean and Cas both felt landed and whole, as characters. Sam's ending was just depressing.
Even though that she didn't expect it to happen, Natalie believes that after 15 years, the show definitely could have gotten away with a happier ending while still remaining authentic to the Winchesters' journey, but we suspect that, for whatever reason, the powers that be just did not see a happier ending as truthful to what Supernatural is all about, despite the characters having earned it.
But surprisingly, the finale was still a happier ending than Cass and Natalie expected. Regarding Castiel in particular, the bar was on the floor - we believed Misha wasn't coming back, and we were expecting a cruel, tragic utter lack of resolution that implied he would be stuck in the Empty having trauma dreams forever.
- The overall Chuck as the writer villain plot and how it has recolored the whole show from the very beginning. The best thing about the Chuck twist was that it gave us, as viewers, a whole new show. Supernatural, from day one, is a brand new experience, knowing the truth about Chuck, and it makes the whole thing that much better. Is there a chance that Ben Edlund had this idea in mind way back in the day?
- The redux, repair and freeing of Heaven as seen in the finale. Over the years, we weren't sure if the show was aware of how messed up their version of Heaven was, but setting it right or changing what happens to human souls after they die was a huge priority for us as fans, because no matter whether we saw the boys die or not in the finale, they are human and will one day eventually die. We support that the finale showed us this, and feel we wouldn't have trusted it if it wasn't via Dean. We really hope that fandom will get interested in exploring more Heaven-based fic sometime soon.
- The fact that so many former SPN cast members and writers are killing it in their careers - it’s been a joy to watch because of course it’s a huge group after 15 years, but a lot of them are reaching new heights (Kathryn & Shoshannah with Marvel, J2’s shows, Misha’s many pursuits, Ruthie & Mark S on Doom Patrol, Rich directing lots of TV) and how it’s just lovely to see them thriving professionally while still remaining part of our community.
- The cancellation of Wayward Sisters. Yes, we're still mad about it, but it's relevant today because we believe that if that show had been running in tandem with Supernatural, the Supernatural finale endgame would be entirely different. We feel absolutely certain that if Wayward had been picked up, none of the boys would’ve died at the end.
- The COVID finale. If we're going to hate the finale, we want to at least hate the real version. We believe that the same plot points may have felt different if a different tone was taken, and the fact that there will always be a big asterisk next to the finale in terms of what it was meant to be, is infuriating. And don't get us started on Misha's absence. Plus, even if we didn't love the finale, the show deserved to get to do what it really wanted to do - not be hobbled by a pandemic.
- The fact that people continue to invalidate the Destiel confession a year later. It was gay, it was romantic, just let us have it. Even the cast are walking back previous statements, which is really disappointing. It’s dangerous, it’s gaslighting, and it's a really bad look for a show with a significant queer fanbase. We really don't like that the concept of art being "open to interpretation" - a good concept that we agree to in theory - is being weaponized to basically say "if this character being queer upsets you, you can explain it away."
- Two Truths and a Lie: Cass Edition, about Old Fandom Lore
- Ask NATW Anything: “What do you all feel is the most important fandom shift post-finale? Do you think there has been one?” Let's just say we have a LOT to unleash for this one, including the loss of conventions, the puriteen police, and the fact that people still aren't ready to have differing finale opinions without getting extremely combative or traumatized. Liliana addresses plenty of this in the article she shared on Subjectify for the anniversary as well.
- Bonus Ask NATW Anything: “?” We apologize to a dear friend and explain how we three all met and spent time together at 2018 JIBCon in Rome. Christine Baranski was involved.

Episode #30 - Thank You, Next
Tuesday, January 1, 2019 • Duration 03:12:10
We're saying thank you, next to 2018 with our End of Year Special - a bumper episode covering our biggest hypes and gripes of the entire year that's past.
Over the course of 2018, Brittany discovered a hatred of the streaming binge model and wants to get back to week-to-week episodic watch experience, and also is on a personal mission to revamp every awards show ever (excepting the Tonys, of course.)
Mitch and Natalie share issues about moving and upheaval, and a horror of feeling apathetic and stuck in your physical space - albeit with very different roots - and Natalie also draws back the curtain on the extremities of social media abuse and cyberbullying within the Supernatural online community.
On a more positive note, Mitch was thrilled this year by a resurgence of video games in general pop culture, and his new role writing about them, and, noticing a similar pattern with D&D, we discuss what draws certain people to the type of entertainment that involves you in storytelling as a participant, rather than a passive observer.
Brittany has moved to a new town with a lot of history, walkability and adorableness - her very own Mayberry - but she's also been able to travel more than expected in 2018, and while doing so, she's discovered the benefits of embracing her inner tourist and learning about the places she visits on guided tours and encourages everyone to do the same.
For Natalie, it was a delight to witness Prince Harry (her childhood imaginary best friend) get married to Meghan Markle, both for the indulgent, escapist modern fairytale of a progressive American princess and for the very real ways that the young royals are reinventing their position in the spotlight to raise awareness for incredible causes.
Celebrity activism in general was another highlight of the year, with the US midterms in particular seeing many notable figures, including Taylor Swift, recognizing that neutrality in the face of injustice is in line with oppression, and publicly endorsing candidates or speaking to their followers about voting for the first time.
#ANA - Ask NATW Anything: "One book, show or movie that’s been on your list for forever that you didn’t get to this year but will definitely read/watch in 2019?"
Episode #29 - But The Handcraftedness
Friday, December 14, 2018 • Duration 02:16:31
Feeling walked all over by The Walking Dead, Mitch needs his traumatic TV deaths to be real and permanent - he definitely should not attempt to watch Supernatural any time soon.
Speaking of SPN, Natalie is feeling some frustration with storytelling in general - or rather, the growing lack of trust that audiences seem to have in the structure of serialized work - you’ve gotta be willing to wait for it! Especially, it seems, when one Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays and integral role.
And we’re back on Broadway once again, bemoaning the limitations of live theater and the pros and cons of the filmed productions.
But right now, ‘tis the season to watch Hallmark, in all its snowy, sexless, save-the-business small town glory. Brittany is on a Christmas movie bender, and we discuss the safety net that this kind of programming provides. It’s delicious comfort food, as is this year’s new release of Queer Eye. While we still remember the original series, we are so grateful that the new Fab Five are here to save us all.
And the precious artform of 2D animation, particularly in the style of Studio Ghibli, leads to another conversation about the shifting scope of television and what that means for content creators.

Episode #28 - Flicking A Farthing
Sunday, December 2, 2018 • Duration 02:22:04
The exhaustion of a Hollywood assistant, the commitment to volunteering for a charity and the shaming of a working actor all lead to a long reflection on what we owe to each other, whether it comes to the service industry, the sad state of the world or the entitlement of human nature. Thankfully, The Good Place is here to save us all, and they have the podcast to prove it.
Meanwhile, Mitch is disgusted by the development of video-game add-ons that prey on FOMO, but needs to use a metaphor about pizza to allow his companions to commiserate, and just in time for Hanukkah, Natalie is mourning her lack of Hebrew, and we delve into the cultural experience of immigrant parents choosing to teach or not teach their second generation children their own native language. Also, Anton Yelchin - bless his beautiful soul - sure was in a lot of movies about crazy rich murder teens.

We're shipping it with author and TV writer Britta Lundin - this episode features a deep dive into Britta's incredible novel 'Ship It' and a very special chat with the author herself. In our interview segment, Britta discusses her own fandom history and her unique perspective behind the scenes on pretty much all sides of the fandom/creator divide - as a voracious shipper with plenty of queer readings of assumed straight characters, and as a TV writer who works on a CW show and is privy to many of the practicalities, restrictions and realities of television production.
Then, in our panel discussion, we bring together three hosts with different levels of fandom immersion - a prominent fanfiction writer, a deeply invested consumer of transformative fanworks, and an obsessive curator and analyst of canon information. Together, we hype and gripe over the 'Ship It' experience and all the ways it related to our individual fandom behavior.

Episode #26 - This Is Why I'm A Nightmare
Thursday, August 16, 2018 • Duration 02:35:02
Buffy's back and Brittany's bothered by reactionary reboot rage. Natalie's been on a voyage down Schitt's Creek and she's thrown away the paddle. And always late, but better late than never: Mitch finally saw Call Me By Your Name and he does not think the level of emotional terrorism should be allowed, but he finally knows the difference between Pretty Woman and Miss Congeniality.
We've got some questions about the Mamma Mia extended universe, but at the end of the day who really cares, when we've also got Colin Firth dancing on a boat and Jessica Keenan Wynn giving us her best baby Baranski? Brittany went to Sweden, where they do not care about Mamma Mia 2, Mitch went to Foxborough, where he smelled Taylor Swift and then was left to starve, and Natalie went to LA, where she was dead-guy adjacent and ended up running into ol' faithful.
#ANA - Ask NATW Anything: "Tell the class about a meaningful experience you had recently as a fan."
One for our SPN family - from Sydney to Los Angeles to Rome, here's a two-part discussion between Natalie and Supernatural mainstay Richard Speight, Jr, about a very special recent episode that Richard starred in - as two separate characters - and also directed. During a press phoner for a teaser article, the idea of a follow-up post-episode breakdown was brought to the table by the man himself, and in an abandoned staff hallway behind the scenes of a convention in Rome, we sat down to get into the nerdy nitty gritty now that the episode is live in the world.
Richard Speight, Jr has appeared on Supernatural since season 2, as a Trickster character eventually revealed to be the archangel Gabriel. After his character's season 5 death, he became a popular performer - and eventually the host - for many Supernatural live events, including their official North American Convention Tour and the show's annual panel appearances in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. More recently, he's regularly worked on the show as a director, to much acclaim, and season 13 saw the reintroduction of his character onscreen.
The episode in question, "Unfinished Business," written by Meredith Glynn and directed by Speight, explores the truth behind Gabriel's death and resurrection and the puzzle behind his deception as Loki - questions that loyal viewers have been waiting over a decade to learn about this fan-favorite character.
Both parts of this interview - pre-episode, which appears in part as written content on Hypable.com, and post-episode - are included in this Supernatural deep-dive.
Episode #24 - 'Tremors' Review, Interview with Michael Gross
Saturday, May 12, 2018 • Duration 01:10:37
Tremors (1990) is a cult classic that Karen loves more than should be possible. While her cohosts reluctantly join the hype bandwagon for the new movie, Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, the hype is real about our interview with series star Michael Gross. Episode #23 - Two Different Bears
Monday, March 19, 2018 • Duration 02:11:31
Heavy is the head that wears The Crown, especially when it comes to light that our glorious Elizabeth Regina, Claire Foy, isn't worth as much to Netflix as her whiny husband. That's gotta be some deeply ironic sort of treason. Also in gripes, Brittany is furious about being emotionally manipulated by The Bachelor - a show that none of us watch - and Mitch is disappointed Netflix's latest original horror movie, Veronica, for its lack of originality. In better news, Christopher Robin proves that the combination of voice-actor nostalgia and Ewan McGregor's sad, sad face is too much for any one heart to handle, and we weigh up the general value of Disney's live-action slate. Mitch opens up a Marvel-ous can of worms with a spoiler-free Jessica Jones season 2 discussion that snowballs into the pros and cons of the MCU's unprecedented on-screen seralization of all things Marvel, and what it actually takes to keep up. And in undebatably magical news: Lin-Manuel freakin' Miranda is Lee freakin' Scoresby in the BBC's long-awaited His Dark Materials miniseries. HESTER.
