Law and Order: Talmudic Trials
jeudi 15 août 2024 • Duration 40:14
As always, thanks to Logan for the intro music
We have all read or heard about things in the bible if you do this thing, you’ll be put to death. How would that work in theory and practice? This episode will go into this topic and (hopefully) cover some of the following:
* Death Penalty
* Lesser Crimes
* Witness testimony being false
* Why is there no Jewish court these days?
Plus we have some listener feedback I forgot about:
I was thinking the other day about different words used in semi-formal contexts:
my grandfather "went to temple" (not to synagogue)
and I swear I never heard "shul" growing up
And a news article: Haredi parties mull bolting coalition as Ben Gvir pushes Jewish prayer on Temple Mount

Feedback:
One
You basically dropped a "White Man's Burden is good actually" and left it at that. Separate but equal, especially at a tribal level, and when it's obvious that 'equal' is a lie does nothing but guarantee that strife will occur. Doubly so when we are talking about Faith based systems.
Two:
Maybe you could put choseness into perspective of Israel the State and the Zionism movement?

The Chosen Title
lundi 20 novembre 2023 • Duration 22:45
* New intro music by Logan!
In the first podcast in over two years, I get my sea legs back as we talk about the war in Israel (briefly). Mostly we talk about what it means that the Jews are the “chosen” people and what that looks like in a liberal (notice the small l) society.
Comment away in the comments (duh! Where else?)

S3E4 - Questions, Questions
lundi 16 août 2021 • Duration 29:37
It was a slow news week this week and so I took one new question and one old question and answered those for what is a slightly shorter show.
Question 1
I listened to the Passover episode again, you talked at the end about selling the leaven using the rabbi as an agent and then leaving it in a locked cabinet. Do you buy it back at the end of Passover? Is there a non-Jew that the Rabbi then sells it to, knowing that this leaven is just temporarily theirs? Or are you just in ignorance about whether the leaven has been sold... since the Rabbi is your agent, and it might not have actually been sold?
Question 2
What is the difference between Hasidic and the "ultra-orthodox" (Haredi?) groups? How does Chabad fit in with this? I ask because in the show one of the character's daughter moves away and marries someone who is a "Chabadnik" and the whole group is treated by this character with some derision.
