Givesuite with Sean Littman04 Feb 202500:24:32

Sean Littman Founder/CEO GiveSuite.com: "...Everyone uses the term all in one. But GiveSuite literally is an all in one for small and medium sized organizations. You have your Crm, you have your donor management system, you have marketing tools, you have social media, scheduling tools, you have fundraising, crowdfunding everything all in one. So that way you can. You can just maximize your time and go out there and change the world, and the price is extremely nominal, because, as I said, our vertical was small medium organizations. ...All these other systems that were charging arm and a leg. I was just like this is stupid, like, you guys don't have the budgets for this stuff, and you don't have the technology for this stuff. Let's make something that's easy for you to use, and affordable and effective and welcome to GiveSuite."

Association of Philanthropic Counsel14 Apr 202200:17:33

Melissa Brown hangs with the SnapCast for a second conversation about the Association of Philanthropic Counsel, a membership association of consulting firms that advise philanthropic (nonprofit) organizations. Upholding a strict code of ethics, APC is committed to ensuring that nonprofit organizations of all sizes can engage experienced, qualified counsel by strengthening the abilities, growing the resources, and expanding the knowledge and networks of our members. Our key talking points include:

  • Code of ethics even "stricter" than AFP's - which is one reason for the referral and references pieces. For example, we commit to continuously updating our professional knowledge. In fact, that knowledge-gain is a key reason people join APC.
  • Membership survey this year showed extremely high commitment to DEIA as an organization and also across members in terms of how they work with clients, such as for board development, strategic planning, and other services, plus in their fee structures, etc.
  • Discussions still underway but it looks like revised Values, Vision, and Mission will be very clear about the commitment we have to inclusion, diversity, equity and access within APC - as a membership association -- and in our firms. That commitment dates to the organization's founding in 1995. It will be much clearer, though, in our public-facing language.
  • We try to live this commitment within the Association through how we seek vendors, our programming, including regular reading/discussion groups and who we invite as speakers, and in our firms based on how we work with clients, our hiring practices, etc. Within APC, we are also working on reviewing association fees and processes to be more accessible, too - stay tuned.
AFP's Study of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access12 Apr 202200:21:25

Melissa Brown of Melissa Brown and Associates visits the SnapCast to talk about the work she did with the Association of Fundraising Professionals to produce the IDEA Report (Assessment of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access).

Key points include:

Collaborative study with NINE organizations participating including African Americans in Development Offices; AFP; CFRE, Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy; and more, with sponsorship from DonorPerfect.

Bad behavior is too common - 34% of study participants reported experiencing some type of bias in the prior year. Bias from co-workers is far more common than from constituents -- and both are vastly underreported at the workplace, with maybe half of the people who experienced bias saying they notified a supervisor or HR staff member. We asked about far more than race -- including age, religion, bias based on physical appearance (tattoos, size, hair style), and so on.

People leave jobs because of bias they have experienced. The NP sector is losing talent because in a high percentage of organizations people are either blind the realities, or possibly "just too nice" to admit this is a problem.

To address bias: NP leaders must be strong in their statements and actions to show no tolerance. Provide time and funding (for facilitation ) of discussions that are themselves inclusive. Have a team of diverse (whatever that means where you are) staff and volunteers to create written policies and procedures. The report has links to some examples. Then be sure that EVERY staff member (and volunteer) is empowered to recognize, name, and take action in the event of bias.

  • How can institutions of privilege root in equity and access, and help students identify their own positionalities?
  • How do you help students shift from the theoretical to the real-life work of social change?
  • How can these large institutions teach innovation practices when they often struggle to use them?

Our fantastic guests included:

Limitations of Empathy & The Future of Narrative Intelligence20 Mar 202201:30:54

Human relationships are at the center of humanity. They drive our culture, performance, and results across any organizational structure, geography, or sector. “Designing for Humanity” is a moral imperative we must consider embodying today to be successful in our impact. The inquiry, practice, strategy, and methodology allow for practices like narrative intelligence and design beyond empathy.

In this special event, Michael O’Bryan will shed light on these concepts and practices and lead us in a workshop on how to expand our knowledge and practices to reach greater relationship, approaches, and ultimately practices in design. The tools that Humanature deploys sit at the intersection of human, economic, and ecological resilience.

Michael is a practitioner and researcher in the fields of community development, organizational culture, and human well-being. He is an Innovation Fellow at Drexel University’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation and most recently served as Director of Learning at The Village of Arts and Humanities. The End of Philanthropy & Shifting to What’s Next05 Mar 202201:12:00

  • What if philanthropy didn’t exist? What is philanthropy building towards? Is values aligned-philanthropy enough?
  • What does a civic and political home look like today? And, what does that have to do with philanthropy?
  • How can government shift the philanthropic asymmetries we have today?
  • What do we need to be able to love our communities
  • How do we shift narratives around who are the protagonists in philanthropy?
  • How do we build out the infrastructure to support key conversations that will translate to action?

2024 Nonprofit Leadership Conference29 Oct 202400:26:57

In this episode, Mickey is on-site at the 13th Annual Nonprofit Leadership Conference, hosted at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens on October 9th, 2024. He speaks with:   Chris Woods, CEO and President of Artportunity Knocks, increasing opportunities in the Arts, Education, Community Service, and Bridging Cultures. Chris says, “I'm a firm believer of rather than talking about the problem, become the solution, and we did that.” What was the solution? Listen to find out.   Joe Arnold, retired SVP at Suntrust Bank, and panel moderator of the conference. Joe notes: “We've got a lot of CEOs who are constantly working in their own vacuum and don't know some of the other CEO leaders across our city, and we thought putting together an annual conference about four and a half hours once a year would be a great way to pull them all together. And I'm just delighted that here in our 13th year that again, we've got to sell out crowd.”   Mindy Binderman, Executive Director of GEEARS, the Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students. We talk about issues of the importance of leadership in all of nonprofit work, “because we know that good leadership is essential for getting great outcomes for kids.”   Howie Rosenberg, Executive Director of Gigi's Playhouse Atlanta, a Down syndrome achievement center offering free services to participants and their families with Down syndrome. “I'm very passionate about what I do. I love my job. I love having no barrier for people to be successful and to get services. I can tell you we may have a family that lives at Country Club to the south, and we might have family that lives in their car and they get the same quality service and the same experiences as each other.”   Ron Alston, Senior Vice President at Truist, leading the Not-For-Profit & Government Banking practice. We discuss how nonprofit banking may differ from any other kind of banking: “Nonprofit needs are different. They really revolve around financing solutions they have. So if they are engaged in a capital campaign and they are building infrastructure, they can utilize tax exempt financing vehicles that small businesses don't have access to. If they're doing work in low to moderate income communities, there are tax credit programs that can be used to help them complete projects…”

Nonprofits Should Be Involved In Advocacy and Lobbying03 Oct 202400:32:45

Pat Libby visits the Nonprofit SnapCast to talk about her work with the San Diego Bird Alliance and her book, The Empowered Citizens Guide. They discuss the importance of lobbying for non-profits, the legalities involved, and practical steps for organizations to start their lobbying efforts. Key Takeaways:

  • All non-profits should be involved in advocacy and lobbying, as these activities are crucial for advancing their missions. For example, a symphony orchestra might lobby for music education to ensure its future.
  • To encourage non-profits to engage in lobbying, they should align their activities with their mission, as many missions relate to public policy. Examples include advocating for mandated reporting laws for computer repair technicians and extending housing support for foster youth.
  • Mid-sized organizations can gain recognition and influence through lobbying, which enhances their impact. Non-profits inherently deal with political considerations, making it essential for them to engage in policy discussions.
  • For non-profits looking to start lobbying, the first step is to educate the board about lobbying rules. Signing the 501H form allows organizations to lobby more freely without complicating their audits.

Visiting with Eric Ryan and Ricky Chilcott of Mission Met. We talk about strategic planning, and how the Mission Met software helps nonprofits achieve their strategic goals. We also discuss the most glaring problems with nonprofit strategic planning, including these barriers to effective execution:

  • The Executive Director Doesn't Champion the Planning Process
  • Nonprofit Strategic Plans are Often Too Complex
  • Planning is Viewed as an Event, Not a Proces

We'll soon be giving away a copy of Mission Met: Proven Strategic Planning Guidance to Help You Build a Financially Secure and Impactful Nonprofit. This book frames strategic planning as a mindset for managing your organization with writing a plan as one key step in an ongoing cycle creating a structure for implementation and course correction as needed. Among the things we cover:

I. Why strategic planning has a tremendous ROI:

  • Helps to ensure that your plan is executed
  • Keeps the team engaged and aligned in the planning process
  • Elevates the importance of strategic planning overall for the organization
  • Shows clear(er) history of what you've decided/tried and what worked/didn't
  • Saves you time and political capital by reminding people about work to be done
  • Is a break for the day-to-day project management software

II. Advice with selecting strategic planning (or really any software)

  • Be honest with yourself about what sort of power you need, want, and can afford
  • Ask yourself whether it's useful to only have a limited set of people able to access (most software is price per-user)
  • Ensure the platform you choose works the way you want
  • Ensure the platform you choose is designed for your size of organization
  • Be on the lookout for other support and resources that provide your team value

Donate Stock with Andrea Young23 Nov 202100:17:43

Andrea Young is the Founder and CEO of Donate Stock. Their mission is to transform charitable giving, by making stock gifting fast, safe, and free for all donors and recipients. We talk about the dynamics of giving stock, the benefits of giving stock (even if you're a modest investor), and the benefits of receiving gifts of stock if you're a nonprofit. Appreciated securities represent an entirely new funding source for most organizations. At no cost, nonprofits can claim their Donate Stock page and gain access to a suite of tools to facilitate stock gifting. Andrea says the effects are sometimes instantaneous for nonprofits.

Insider Giving, with Cindy Schipani22 Nov 202100:13:42

Mickey speaks with Cindy Schipani, Merwin H. Waterman Collegiate Professor of Business Administration & Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan. We talk about insider charitable giving, a "worryingly widespread" practice that is quite harmful. "Increasing civil and criminal penalties does not work as a successful deterrent if there is substantial ambiguity about what is illegal insider trading," says Schipani. "This ambiguity allows insiders to not only trade successfully but also to fend off attempts by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Justice Department to discipline them after the fact." Our conversation covers the things nonprofits should be aware of when processing gifts of stocks and securities.

Donor Advised Funds and B Charitable, with Jonathan Shugart18 Nov 202100:28:03

Visiting with Jonathan Shugart of B Charitable, an Alabama based nonprofit corporation. We talk about Donor Advised Funds and their benefit to both the donor and the recipients. B Charitable is a tax-exempt entity whose sole purpose is to house charitable gifting funds for individuals. In addition, the platform provides donors with financial peace of mind knowing that the funds collected on B Charitable can only then be donated to public charities. Different from other crowdfunding platforms, donations can not be spent by the individual collecting the donations.

Jonathan also turns the table and questions Mickey about the Nonprofit Snapshot.

SB-17 Is Changing The Nonprofit Landscape01 Oct 202400:29:23

Dr. Johanna Moya Fábregas visits the SnapCast. Dr. Fábregas is the Executive Director of Con Mi MADRE, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Latina girls and their loved ones through education and emotional support. We talk about Texas State Bill-Seventeen, which is known informally as “the anti-DEI law,” shutting down diversity, equity and inclusion offices like university LGBTQ+ centers. Among the things we discuss:

  • SB-17 is changing the nonprofit landscape, it's important to "SB-17 proof" your organization
  • Difficult decisions must be made when you lead a nonprofit and the important thing is looking at the big picture and moving towards the decision that will ensure sustainable growth
  • Even during difficult times, the goal is to continue supporting all participants to the best of our ability
  • How can an organization that's run for 20 years continue to run for the next two decades?

Putting your Nonprofit on the Map, with Pace PR11 Nov 202100:13:24

Mickey visits with Annie Scranton of Pace Public Relations to talk about nonprofit visibility and community building.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States. With so many nonprofits, many of them trying to achieve the same goal, it can be challenging to gain visibility, build your community, and increase your donor base if your audience doesn't even know you exist. Using her client Concern World Wide U.S. as a case study, Annie dives into why every nonprofit should build a thought leadership program for their organization, how they can achieve it, and how this strategy put Concern Worldwide U.S. on the map. We also discuss what PR strategies you can incorporate to help you successfully pitch yourself to the media, how to leverage local press to garner larger media coverage, and how this strategy can be used to build your community and increase your donor base.
