Creating Sticky Teams That Thrive with Kishshana Palmer
03 Jul 2024
00:58:37
What makes a nonprofit successful? A lot of things. An engaged donor base, for example. Enthusiastic Board members. A compelling case for support. Those are all necessary to grow your organization and sustain your mission.
But a critically important and often overlooked element is the employee. Nonprofits suffer higher turnover than any other sector. The nonprofit turnover rate clocks in at just over 21% and the overwhelming majority of that is voluntary. Surveys show that nearly half of nonprofit employees will seek other jobs by 2025.
So what can be done? This is where a successful employee retention strategy comes in.
My guest is the one-and-only Kishshana Palmer, Kishshana is CEO of ManageMint Inc., an organizational development firm focused on helping everyday leaders live well and lead well. In this episode, Kishshana will unravel the secrets behind creating sticky teams and boosting employee retention.

4 Simple Frameworks to Prioritize Your Audiences with Farra Trompeter
07 Dec 2022
00:34:38
Effective nonprofit communication planning begins with knowing who your audiences are. Seems simple, right?
Sure: you can write out a long list of various groups that your organization is communicating with or wants to reach in the future… but where do you go from there?
As Big Duck’s Co-Director, Farra Trompeter (she/her) ensures that Big Duck is a healthy, thriving company. Big Duck, a worker-owned cooperative, helps nonprofits use comms to achieve their mission by building strong brands, strong campaigns, and strong teams. Much of their work centers on creating strategies and tactics that are rooted in understanding who your audiences are, what they need to read, hear, or experience about an organization or its work in order to engage.
Farra has led dozens of organizations through major brand overhauls, fundraising campaigns, and much more since joining Big Duck in 2007. She’s a frequent speaker around the country, training nonprofit staff and board members on branding, communications planning, and engaging donors at all giving levels.

[SOLO] How to Turn Giving Tuesday Donors Into Long-Term Supporters
01 Dec 2022
00:12:59
How did Giving Tuesday go for you? I have seen nonprofits spend so much time this year working on their campaigns, creating buzz and excitement, thinking of ways to bring in new donors and get supporters excited before year-end.
But what happens after the donation comes in?
What’s the plan to keep these new donors and bring them into the fold long term, after November 29th?
Let’s talk about donor psychology. We know what donors want.

The Right Way to Tell a Fundraising Story with Vanessa Chase Lockshin
30 Nov 2022
00:31:50
Believe it or not, there's a right way to tell a fundraising story. And by fundraising story, I mean a story that you're using to raise money for your non-profit.
A fundraising story needs the right story structure to connect with the audience, demonstrate need, and invite the audience to get involved by making a donation.
Individual donors can give with shocking levels of generosity when they’re deeply moved by stories. That’s just what your organization needs in order to grow!
But chances are, you didn’t get your job because you’re already a storytelling expert. In fact, you may struggle to find stories you think your donors would find interesting.
You might not be at all confident that you can write them well. The good news? You can change all that.
My guest this week is Vanessa Chase Lockshin, a consultant specializing in non-profit storytelling, fundraising and communications, author of The Storytelling Non-Profit: A practical guide to telling stories that raise money and awareness, and the creator of immersive online training programs for non-profit professionals. Vanessa is an award-winning entrepreneur, avid reader, and resident of Victoria, Canada.

With a background in community organizing and the arts, Alyssa leads the Collective with skill, creativity, and passion. As an accomplished facilitator, consultant, and coach, she builds new revenue streams, shifts cultural perspectives, and inspires people to believe that change is possible no matter what.
She has helped hundreds of both domestic and global social change organizations successfully launch major gifts programs, capital campaigns, and create sustainable funding models resulting in over $100,000,000 of resource flow. Everyone that has worked with Alyssa knows that she is a true partner. She answers late-night text messages, takes on difficult conversations for clients, and makes jokes that will keep clients smiling through rejected proposals and rained-out fundraising events. Her experience and wit has also allowed her to become a sought-after speaker on philanthropy and fund development as well as a regular contributor to ForbesWomen, Global Giving, and Network for Good. Alyssa is a powerful Millennial voice in the social change movement.
Fun Fact: Alyssa has had to handle a lot of stressful and harmful situations as a fundraiser over the last decade including a funder revoking a seven-figure gift at the last minute, sexual harassment while stewarding a male donor over the years, and having to fire and rebuild an entire board of directors in a few weeks. No situation seems unknown to her as a fundraiser.
Today is #GivingTuesday! GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past ten years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity year-round.
In 2021, an estimated $2.7 Billion were donated in twenty-four hours in the U.S. alone, a 9% increase over the prior year and a 37% increase from pre-pandemic levels.
84% of those aware report that GivingTuesday inspired them to be more giving. A 2019 Horizon Media study reported that 52% said that they want to donate on this day because it allows them to be a part of a bigger group of people doing good.
As they write on their website, "GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people around the world to use their individual power of generosity to remain connected and support their communities. It’s not just one day – this is a global social movement that’s working every day to fuel more generosity in service to building a more just and equitable world."
In this episode, I go over several ways to promote your Giving Tuesday campaign and drive more donations.

Strengthening the Capacity of Black Fundraisers with Kia Croom
23 Nov 2022
00:34:10
In the report The Lived Experience of Fundraisers of Colorproduced by Cause Effective, two-thirds of the respondents mentioned facing obstacles in their development careers due to their race.
More than half of those surveyed acknowledged they might be reluctant to recommend that people of color they know enter into the fundraising profession, “because fundraising involves external relationships where bias might be present” and “fundraising reflects and magnifies the racial hierarchies of our culture.”
On this episode of Nonprofit Nation, I sit down with Kia Croom, a fund development executive with 20 years of experience. Kia launched the Black Fundraisers’ podcast to celebrate, inspire and equip Black fund development professionals to excel and positively impact Black communities.
Some of my favorite episodes have featured Johnnetta Cole, the first Black woman president of Spelman College and later Bennett College, social entrepreneur Trabian Shorters, and fundraising executive Dianna Campbell.
Kia also spearheads an initiative called Fundraising in Black - a series of fundraising capacity-building courses targeted to Black and Brown fundraising professionals.

Secrets of Compelling Grant Writing That Gets Funded with Rachel Waterman
16 Nov 2022
00:36:18
Requesting grant dollars can be quite intimidating, especially when you’re new to the grant seeking process. When it comes to nonprofit grant writing, there’s not a formulaic approach or “one-size-fits-all”. Rather, you need to customize your approach for each funder you pursue.
Rachel Waterman is here to help! Rachel is the CEO and Founder of GDS Grants. She is a GPA approved trainer and presenter on various topics related to grant writing, research & management, but her favorite "things" are data collection/outcome measures and systems for scale and efficiency. She helped develop the grant management software GEMS Grant Easy Management Software.
In this episode, you’ll learn Rachel’s best tips to:
Best identify which funders to pursue
Determine what to include in your grant proposal - and what you can leave out
Persuade funders that you are worthy of a grant
Manage grant-writing with the other responsibilities on your plate

First, the bad news. 34% of nonprofits lost fundraising staff in 2021.
Fundraisers only stay on the job for an average of 16 months.
85% of fundraisers expect to change jobs within the next two years - with more than one-third expecting to leave fundraising altogether.
I don't find this surprising, sadly.
Many of my clients are fulfilling all the non-program tasks, including:
Marketing
Social Media
Outreach
Public relations
Donor relations
Events
And oh yes - fundraising!
Usually all of this is lumped into one impossible job description - ending with the dreaded:
"Other duties as assigned."
Now for the good news! There is a better way to structure your development positions and to prevent fundraisers (and other staff) from jumping ship.
In this Nonprofit Nation episode, Chad Barger, CFRE of Productive Fundraising walks us through his simple but effective framework to attract and retain fundraising talent, even in a hybrid and very disrupted work environment.

Do you remember that first in-person event or conference that you had to cancel in 2020? I remember it SO clearly. 😥
I honestly didn't know if we would gather again in person, in large groups.
Would everything be virtual?
Would we be forced to just watch endless webinars on Zoom?
More importantly - how can we make virtual professional development better? And not just in terms of educational content, but the actual experience itself?
Tim Sarrantonio is on a mission to change the way we learn and the way we create educational experiences for nonprofits. As the Director of Corporate Brand for Neon One, Tim speaks and writes on everything involving generosity, technology, and the trends in the social good sector.
In this special episode of Nonprofit Nation, we explore the ways that nonprofit professional development has changed in the wake of the pandemic and why we have both chosen to invest in virtual conference experiences.

Making Money While Making Change with Quilen and Hannah Blackwell
26 Jun 2024
00:40:28
Financial sustainability is crucial, but social impact is the heart of nonprofits. With the social enterprise model, how can we ensure that our organization prioritizes its social mission while maintaining a viable business?
My guests today are Quilen and Hannah Blackwell, the co-founders of Southside Blooms, an off-grid flower farm youth social enterprise where participants convert vacant lots into commercial flower farms using solar powered rainwater irrigation. This creates jobs for young people on the south and west sides of Chicago.
Hannah and Quilen were married in 2015, and immediately set up the Chicago Eco House, a rehabbed two flat greystone property in the heart of Englewood and got to work getting to know the community. Soon they were farming several vacant lots close to their house, constantly researching what would fulfill their mission of using sustainability to alleviate poverty. It became clear that flowers would be the avenue to do this and Southside Blooms was born.
In this episode, we discuss:
How Southside Blooms empowers at-risk youth through urban flower farming.
The benefits of the social enterprise model for long-term financial sustainability in nonprofits.
Balancing earned income with maintaining a charitable mission.
Real-life examples of how Southside Blooms has transformed lives.

There are more than 1.5 million tax-exempt organizations in the United States (National Center for Charitable Statistics), and recent estimates indicate that about 12.3 million people work in the nonprofit sector. It is estimated that three-quarters of American nonprofits have budgets under $1 million but there are many that are even smaller.
In this episode, I sit down with Erik Hanberg, author of four books for very small nonprofits, to find out how small nonprofits can fundraise, where they should focus their limited time and resources, and how to get it all done with a tiny staff (maybe of 1 person).
Erik Hanberg has spent 20 years working with nonprofits. In addition to serving as the director of two nonprofits, he has served as an Interim ED twice and worked for nonprofits in marketing and fundraising. He has also served on boards and committees for more than a dozen organizations, often in leadership roles, and several times during a capital campaign.
He is the author of four books for nonprofits, focusing on nonprofit management, fundraising, social media, and board governance, which have collectively sold tens of thousands of copies. They’ve been praised as essential reads for nonprofits by Forbes.com, LinkedIn for Nonprofits, Kirkus Reviews, and thousands of executive directors and board members.

How to Maximize Fundraising Using AI with Michael Gorriarán
21 Sep 2022
00:33:42
As we emerge from COVID, it is easy to anticipate that giving patterns will change, again. Simultaneously, new generations of potential donors are accumulating wealth, and they expect to be engaged as “individuals,” not “donor segments.”
How does a fundraiser navigate these trends?
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and Behavioral Economics Modeling can successfully address these challenges. Careful observation of donor behavior through A.I. modeling services can provide more accurate insights into donor sentiment. Today’s professional fundraisers can use these insights to individually optimize giving at the scale of direct response fundraising, enabling nonprofit organizations to know precisely how much to ask of each donor, at each moment in time, over a lifetime of giving.
In this podcast episode, my guest Michael Gorriarán will provide insights on the imperative for A.I. services in fundraising, including how it works, what to expect, and how to implement it with integrity.
You will learn about:
The opportunity for A.I. in fundraising
How to implement A.I. in a way that is free of bias, secure, and respects donor privacy
Case studies from peer experiences with A.I. in fundraising optimization
Michael Gorriarán is President of Arjuna Solutions, an artificial intelligence services provider serving consumer-facing businesses. The firm applies behavioral economics modeling techniques through its patented A.I. services to ensure businesses optimize pricing and revenue realization.

How to Use Grant Writing as A Tool for Change with Catherine Ashton
31 Aug 2022
00:37:45
The words we use matter. The stories we tell have an impact. Yet, our grants are often full of old, recycled language and buzzword descriptors that are more than just boring — they’re harmful. Grant writers play a critical role in branding the organization and crafting the ways in which it is presented to funders, and thus they are critical in integrating social justice into fundraising programs - and the overall culture and work of their organization.
This podcast episode explores how grant writers at all stages of their career can ground their grant writing practices in race, equity, and social justice. Catherine Ashton discusses how the ways in which we talk, teach, and practice nonprofit work can uphold harmful systems of oppression - or we can use our writing to further anti-racist, community-centric principles.
Catherine Ashton (she/her) is on a mission to change the way nonprofits raise money. As the founder of Giant Squid Group LLC, Catherine works with nonprofits to land donors, win grants, and fund their works. She is a sought-after coach, speaker, and strategist locally and nationally, and specializes in helping organizations marry best practices and mission-aligned innovation to drive systems-level change.

If you’ve got a Strategic Planning document on a shelf somewhere that was written after an enormous number of meetings but never cracked again, you are in good company. Many nonprofits spend time, resources, and precious bandwidth creating a Strategic Plan - never to look at it again. Yikes.
In an ideal world, a Strategic Plan covers the why and how of your existence, and encompasses broad strategic goals and strategies that you want to accomplish in the near future. It defines what an organization should do within the next two to five years - and how to get there.
But before your nonprofit ventures into the nonprofit strategic planning process, there are several considerations you need to take into account.
Carol Hamilton is an organization effectiveness consultant who helps nonprofits become more strategic and innovative for greater mission impact. She facilitates strategic planning, helps organization’s prepare for executive transitions and provides training.
Carol trains frequently on leadership, strategy and innovation topics and is the host of the Nonprofit Mission: Impact podcast. She graduated from Swarthmore College and has her Masters in Organization Development from American University.

How to know if you have a successful strategic plan
What are some of the elements that go into a successful process
How long is the process and how often to revisit
How can we do strategic planning in uncertain times? How can we plan 3-5 years into the future?

Nonprofits often struggle with how to write emails, newsletters, and other copy that can connect with donors. The key? To incorporate vulnerability, warmth, authenticity, and even some silliness and disregard for proper grammar and style. And who best to teach us this style than someone who was in the trenches for years - with extraordinary results!
For 11 years, Julie Edwards was immersed in the world of animal welfare as Director of Development and Marketing, then Executive Director, of a regional selective admission facility. Throughout her tenure, she learned from the best in the field and used this knowledge to take the organization to the next level including overseeing the expansion of public clinical services to $1+ million in annual revenue. Julie built the organization's development and marketing communications programs from the "ground up" taking annual gifts from less than $200K to more than $1 million.
Here are some of the topics we discussed:
Why donor relations matter now more than ever
The essential elements of a donor relations program that actually works
How small nonprofits can split their time on donor retention AND donor acquisition

The data we have is flawed. My guest this week, Meenakshi ‘Meena’ Das, writes: “For far too long, we have ignored collecting critical data points, missed creating healthy dialogues around that data, and we have added our biases to all of it — all of it — to perform research operations and take crucial decisions from it.”
What is "good data" and how can we collect it? How can we build inclusive and equitable research and analysis into our programs - to help accomplish our missions and to become more financially sustainable?
Meenakshi (Meena) Das (she/her/hers) is Founder & Philanthropy Analytics Consultant at NamasteData.
She specializes in designing survey-based research tools and analyzing engagement to help organizations find the strategic value of their data. Meena spends her time outside work as a mentor to immigrants and as pro bono research advisor to small shops.
Her two recent favorite projects are working on making data-based research tools more DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) compliant and designing the second season of her podcast “Being and Unbeing an Immigrant” where she wants to bring together the families of immigrants left behind in the home country.
Here are some of the topics we discussed:
Newsletter for changemakers of the nonprofit industry to learn & share about equity-led data, research, & analytics
What “inclusive and equitable research and analytics” means and has to do with nonprofit leaders
What kind of data should we be collecting and how can this make us better fundraisers
Making data-based research tools more grounded in DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility)

Why Nonprofits Should Care About Crypto with Pat Duffy
01 Jun 2022
00:35:46
On top of all the other fundraising strategies nonprofits have to master, you may be thinking that the additional hassle of figuring out cryptocurrency donations may not be worth it.
However, 220,000,000+ people use cryptocurrency today. And half of millennials prefer crypto investing to stocks. And in a recent study, Fidelity Charitable found crypto owners to be more charitable than the typical investor, but 46% of these donors noted it was difficult to find nonprofits that accept cryptocurrency donations.
With so many ways for nonprofits to accept cryptocurrency donations, you don’t need to turn away donors who wish to donate their Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other coins. It’s a new technology that is constantly evolving, and it’s understandable if you have some apprehension or confusion about how it all works. However, with so many tools available it is easier than ever to get started.
Pat Duffy created The Giving Block with Co-Founder Alex Wilson in 2018, developing the leading solutions that charities, universities and other nonprofits use to fundraise cryptocurrencies. They quickly established themselves as the leading crypto fundraising experts through the explosive growth of their programs at Save the Children and United Way Worldwide. Over the last four years, The Giving Block has turned cryptocurrency into the fastest growing donation method, founding the industry’s giving pledge, giving days and crowdfunding platform.
Here are some of the topics we discussed:
How can a nonprofit get started accepting crypto donations
Bitcoin currently being the most popular among cryptocurrencies, how can nonprofits ask for Bitcoin donations
What is Blockchain-based NFTs and how can nonprofits use NFTs
What are the trends on the next coming years

Storytelling has been receiving a lot of press lately, as a content marketing tool and as an effective way to engage audiences on social media.
Brands and businesses are getting their stories out there – stories about their origins, their values, their customers.
So why are most nonprofits so bad at storytelling?
I think the reason is that many nonprofit staff and volunteers are uncomfortable talking about themselves. They feel icky asking for support, asking for help, patting themselves on the back and sharing the great work they are doing every day.
This needs to change.
Here are 5 stories that your nonprofit should be telling everywhere you do fundraising and marketing – including social media.
