Episode 48 - Dugin’s Occult Fascism and the Hijacking of Left Anti-Imperialism and Muslim Anti-Salafism with Wahid Azal14 Mar 202201:10:39

In part 2 of our ongoing series about Aleksandr Dugin, Jules Taylor sits down to speak with Wahid Azal, author of the 2016 Counterpunch article entitled "Dugin's Occult Fascism and the Hijacking of Left Anti-Imperialism and Muslim Anti-Salafism".

Wahid wrote this article when he realized that Duginists were actively recruiting leftists and anti-imperialists, as well as anti-Salafist Shiʿi and Sunni Muslims. This conversation was eye-opening on numerous levels, but I want to be cautious here and remind folks that being an anti-fascist isn't not dangerous. Fascists, in general, are dangerous people, with a ravenous ideology who are not to be trifled with.

Wahid currently lives in Australia, and he relocated there from Berlin for his safety and the safety of his daughter after his wife mysteriously passed away. This conversation is about more than Dugin. It's about being anti-fascist and calling it out when you see it and how there is a very real cost to doing that. It's also about the way shades of far-right ideology can muddy the water and how we lose comrades.

My heart goes out to Wahid and his daughter, as it takes an incredible amount of bravery to keep sounding the alarm on all of this.

Episode 47 - We Need to Talk about Aleksandr Dugin02 Mar 202201:15:02

With the recent invasion of Ukraine, it’s become clear that Putinism and Duginism have converged. Who is Aleksandr Dugin? And how is he relevant to Russia’s attempted invasion?

Dugin is rumored to have the ear of Vladimir Putin, to be his advisor, and since Russia has a history of autocratic rulers being advised by mystical characters with long hair and unkempt facial hair, there is a tendency of folks dismissing this all together. But you know it makes sense, since Dugin is a prominent member of the largest political party in Russia and has acted as an advisor to the state duma in the past.

In 1997, Aleksandr Dugin publishes a book called "The foundations of geopolitics: the geopolitical future of Russia". The cover of the book in at least one edition has an outline of the continents of Europe and Asia, with the symbol of 8 arrows, 4 of which point in the cardinal directions. The other arrows point in the directions of southwest, southeast, northwest, and northeast, and the symbolism of the Eurasian continent behind the outward expanding arrows leaves no question the intention of this book: this is a manifesto for Russian expansion.

Episode 46 - The Freedom Convoy and The Perils of Left Populism 11 Feb 202201:17:35

Cam Scott is a poet, musician, and local organizer from Winnipeg, and he's on the show to speak to us about an article he's written. We're talking about the 'freedom convoy' or 'trucker convoy' or whatever you'd like to call it. This conversation is about the difference between populist movements and peoples' movements, and why the left should be cautious when considering the use of populist politics, and why the convoy is not a workers' movement.

Executive produced by Black Lives Matter Cleveland, The State of Injustice documentary series focuses on systemic failures of Ohio law enforcement. The initial three-episode season explores police abuse in the city of Euclid Ohio, and the lack of action taken by that city’s administration.

Police violence and prosecutorial corruption, especially against Black and minority residents, is an epidemic in Ohio that needs to see the light of day.  Local news has largely failed to report on these issues adequately or without a pro-police bias.

My personal ACAB Story06 Nov 202100:44:39

Thus far on No Easy Answers, I have not gotten too personal about my past and the things going on in my life. I think that all changed when I learned my mother's health was failing. I think in forming a go fund me for her dialysis treatment, that really opened the door to a new level of comfort I felt in disclosing very personal things about me and my life.

So there seems to be a space that's opened up for me to divulge these sorts of things, and so this is one of what should be a handful of shorter and impromptu monologues.

As always, thank you for the support - sending all of you love and solidarity from NY.

Quick Announcement about the show format 06 Nov 202100:02:55

Hey y'all,

Just a short announcement here that I'm switching up the show format. I have found that I'm really enjoying smaller episodes with spontaneous thoughts. Some listeners seem to really enjoy the cold open with no intro music, without the formality of the longer and more produced episodes.

So I plan on posting more frequently, and I'll be releasing a few episodes on the main feed with this announcement.

No need to actually listen to this announcement if you've read this - just wanted to keep y'all informed.

As always, thank you for the support. Sending all of you love and solidarity from NY.

Jules Taylor, interviewed by Henry Hakamäki, for the David Feldman Show 06 Nov 202100:32:32

I was invited on the David Feldman Show by my friend and comrade Henry Hakamäki from the Guerilla History podcast. I was really happy to talk with Henry - and if you haven't checked out both Guerilla History and the David Feldman Show, I'd highly recommend checking those out.

David Feldman's show is like a 7-hour show twice a week. It's totally insane that 14 hours of content a week are produced for that show. *mind blown*

Guerilla History is a podcast that is a "must listen" for me any time they release a new episode.

We talked about my most recent (at the time) episode called "There is no greater con than the American Dream."

Here's a link to the speech I delivered that I mentioned during the course of my conversation.

New Album: Whiskey Clear | The Poetry, Stories, and Meaning Behind the Songs20 Jan 202401:24:53

Hey Y'all! I'm back again with a long episode about the new album, detailing the poetry, stories, and meaning behind the songs, along with snarky remarks unpalatable for the other project channels. If you have not already, I'd be both honored and delighted if you checked out the new album at the link below:

Listen Here: Jules Taylor - Whiskey Clear

Also, I had said at the top of the episode that I would play back the album in its entirety, but let's be real here - that would make this episode too long and I think listeners would prefer to keep the deliberate listening of music and podcasts separate. Like you come to me for chats and not to play music but I would also like to give you the option to take in my music.

Episode 34 - Pt. 6 Dangerous Minds, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Return of the Far Right with Ronald Beiner 17 Jul 202101:47:47

Jules speaks with Professor Ronald Beiner about his book Dangerous Minds: Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Return of the Far Right. Ronald Beiner is Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Contemporary far-right and neofascist movements continue to be inspired by these philosophers, and intellectually conscious fascists still hold them in high regard. Do these philosophers have anything useful for the political left, and if so, what can we find in philosophers who outright reject egalitarianism?

Episode 33 - Pt. 5 Fascism, Anti-Communism, the CIA and French Theory with Gabriel Rockhill07 Jul 202101:35:58

In the final episode in our series about Fascism, Jules speaks with Professor Gabriel Rockhill about a series of articles he wrote called "Fascism - A Counter-History". Professor Rockhill speaks to the conjunctural, structural, and systemic aspects of Fascism from a materialist perspective, and how this method breaks with liberal notions of fascism simply being an idiosyncratic occurrence that happened once in history. Along the way, questions of syncretism, operation paperclip, and Michel Foucault come up, including how the CIA targeted certain theorists in order to drive an ideological wedge between communists and left anti-communists.

Introducing the Corpus Christi Songwriters Podcast 19 Jan 202401:34:25

Hey Y'all,

I am still on hiatus here on this platform, but I wanted to take a moment and introduce a different podcast that I am a co-host on. This is a really special project I was invited to spearhead with my friends Jimmy Willden (Director, Songwriter, Film Composer) and Garrett Wieland (Songwriter and Old West Fanatic). We are about 11 episodes in at this point, and I am finding that I fit in a lot of philosophical concepts there as they relate to songwriting. This is such a joy for me to take part in, and since there was the tiniest bit of overlap, I've decided to give y'all a taste here in hopes some of you will make it over to the Corpus Christi Songwriter Podcast Feed.

And! I have a new album out, available now at all streaming links. Click here to listen to Whiskey Clear

New episodes coming in a little while. See y'all soon.

Episode 32 - Pt. 4 Carl Schmitt, States of Exception, and Political Theology with Matthew Lowery17 Jun 202101:36:45

Jules speaks with Matthew Lowery, one of the cohosts of the Acid Horizon Podcast, about the political works of Carl Schmitt. This conversation is part 4 in the arch of this show, and would naturally follow after our previous episodes discussing Heidegger, Fascism, and Traditionalism. Matthew explains to us who Carl Schmitt was, why one would wish to engage with his work, and makes clear that Carl Schmitt was a Nazi bastard but his ideas are still relevant to contemporary politics.

Episode 31 - Pt. 3 Time and Trauma: Thinking Through Heidegger in the Thirties with Richard Polt30 May 202101:27:39

Jules speaks with Professor Richard Polt about the philosopher Martin Heidegger. Richard Polt is a Professor of Philosophy at Xavier University, and he is the author of several books on philosophy, including his most recent book, called Time and Trauma: Thinking Through Heidegger in the Thirties. Heidegger is a controversial figure in that he joined the Nazi party in 1933, and so this left a shadow over his philosophical contributions. Evidence revealed in the last 20 years would suggest it is not so easy to let Heidegger off the hook.

Episode 29 - Pt. 1 Apostasy, Spiritual but not Religious, Traditionalism, and Fascism28 May 202101:42:11

In this monologue episode, Jules talks about the ways a secular society relocates the sacred to objects of liberal worship. Along the way, he speaks to the volatility of spirituality, in that vague senses of spirituality can lead one into other thoughts that are useful for inchoate fascism. Ultimately, he argues we must take seriously the ways in which spirituality can lend itself to fascism, as there are actual fascists in the world who would leverage spirituality to spread their ideology.

Episode 28 - Decoding the Alt-Right with Laura Jedeed12 Apr 202101:24:01

The fabulous Laura Jedeed joins Jules for a conversation about the alt-right. In an effort to decode the alt-right, and examine their psychological workings, Jules and Laura flex their empathy muscles (but not too much) - because these fuckers aren't deserving of too much sympathy beyond that required of gaining an understanding of their motives and how they operate.

Episode 20 - Waiting for the Truth with Dr. Grover Furr05 Feb 202101:31:40

Dr. Furr is the author of several books and articles on Soviet History, specifically the Stalin era of 1930 to 1953. I wanted to talk with him because every single one of his publications stands in contradiction to the generally accepted narratives of Soviet History.

If you ask a random person who Joseph Stalin is, they'll probably tell you something like Stalin was a brutal dictator and he killed millions of people. Books by historians Steven Kotkin and Robert Conquest affirm these accusations of crimes and atrocities, and so people generally believe that standard line about Stalin. Of course, all of this works in service of framing the USSR as totalitarian, and more broadly permits the positing of the false notion of horseshoe theory.

As you'll hear in our conversation, Dr. Furr has spent years combing through the footnotes of the authors like Kotkin and Conquest. He's not only refuting their accusations, but he's publishing books showing why their accusations are false with primary source evidence. His work is remarkable when you begin to think of the ways 20th-century world history would change if we had to fundamentally rethink the history of Soviet Russia.

It really was an honor and a privilege to speak with Dr. Furr about his research, and his latest publication, Trotsky and the Military Conspiracy. So here's my conversation, with Dr. Grover Furr.

Episode 19 - Is Psychology a Pseudoscience? With Daniel Barker 02 Feb 202101:21:08

Jules speaks with a practicing psychotherapist named Daniel Barker. For reasons pertaining to confidentiality, that's about all the info we can disclose about him. Daniel and Jules agreed to not disclose his location, his practice, and honestly, Daniel isn't even his real name. All of this probably sounds strange, but the question they're talking about is 'Is Psychology a Pseudoscience"? Who better to talk to about this sort of thing, than a practicing psychologist?
