Narco Shark // Mexican Yakuza, shark gods, and sexy sax talk with director Gerardo Preciado23 Oct 202300:44:28

I’m getting ready to be back in your earballs weekly and I’ve got a special bonus episode with indie director Gerardo Preciado. We dig deep into his creative process, the making of Narco Shark, and his new film trailer and campaign for TETRACTYS, his surreal and experimental horror film.

My audio quality isn’t the best because we recorded from different countries and had some connection issues (I couldn’t mute my mic) but we had a great discussion about his work.

Women of Color Horror Creators22 Jul 202101:35:13

This week we are discussing SIX short films from six talented WOC horror creators. Due to the content of each short film, we are including both spoiler alerts and trigger and content warnings. At the end of the show notes you will find time stamps for each episode. If you feel you need to skip around, we hope this helps.

We really enjoyed being able to watch all of the shorts as each one was a unique view into each creators’ world. While some of the material was what we call “a hard watch”, we wanted to highlight these women and their films. We’re so glad that we were able to discuss these movies and we hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Sweetheart | Dig a hole and drop her in, Alma's done08 Jul 202101:30:30

What do you get when you put a strong AF woman and a sexy sea creature in the same movie? A fight for survival during a shipwrecked getaway. Alma and Dalia discuss proper castaway attire and how Alma is not fit to be your survival buddy. During this week's Real World Connection we head off to Tokelau and tell the survival story of 3 teenage boys lost at sea for 51 days.

Mandao Returns | Indie Creator Scott Dunn Joins Us!01 Jul 202101:37:05

We had so much fun recording this episode. Mandao Returns is a quirky sci-fi horror comedy that follows up Mandao of the Dead. Fun movie that hit all the marks for us this week--murderous cult, astral projecting, with a Christmas backdrop. For this week's Real World Connection we have a special treat! Scott Dunn, screenwriter/director/actor of the Mandao Series and Schlep, joined us to talk about his movies, indie filmmaking, diversity & inclusivity in horror, and his upcoming projects. Tigers are Not Afraid | "Los Topos de Tlatelolco"24 Jun 202101:34:14

This week we watched and discuss the Mexican movie "Tigers are Not Afraid" from Mexican screenwriter director Issa Lopez. Whoo, this one is a great movie. Tons of emotion when we discuss a movie about drug cartel violence and orphaned children, but beautiful imagery and story we just had to share. For our Real World Connection we stay in Mexico City and discuss the heroics of the rescuers known as "Los Topos de Tlatelolco".

TW/CW as this movie deals with the Mexican drug cartel violence. The movie discusses and portrays the disappeared and the murder of women and children.

Blood Quantum | Don't Mess with First Nations People17 Jun 202101:43:42

For TW/CW go to end of show notes for info.
This week we watched and discussed “Blood Quantum”, a zombie flick stuffed full of historical and social commentary. This indigenous take on a familiar genre not only entertained us, but got us feeling way too many feels, as Dalia says. Head shots and splashy gore bring it all together to give us a great undead tale. We loved it! For our Real World Connection, we once again get way real and discuss indigenous conscription and Canada’s ridiculous demands on the First Nations People.

The People Under the Stairs | Collab with Afro Horror10 Jun 202101:37:59

We’re back with Season 2 and our special collab episode with Sade of Afro Horror. For our season 2 opener we watched and discussed “The People Under the Stairs” which is one of our all time favorites. Talk about nostaligia! This was a great way to kick off our season discussions of BIPOC voices in horror. This episode is a little different as it’s a collab which means double the fun! Or is it triple? Anyway... We get down to business and discuss the need for more diversity in horror ‘cause DUH and how a disturbing sister/brother wife/husband comedy horror movie from the 90s can be both creepy as hell and hilarious for all the right reasons. Join us for our season 2 opener and don’t forget to subscribe and leave a review!

The Blob - BONUS EPISODE27 May 202100:35:01

This episode was originally released 28 January as a Bonus Episode only available on Spotify. Why? It had a fun little copyrighted song. Now we have removed the song for your listening pleasure. Oh, and ignore the TikTok talk. We don't do TikTok anymore, that project has been abandoned. Enjoy!

1958 was a good year, especially for Steve McQueen. Alma and Dalia needed a palate cleanser after La Llorona and figured you would need one, too. Journey with us to a small town to discuss how to deal with an invasion from a gelatinous extraterrestrial. Some will win, some will lose. But it's all in good fun as this movie does end.

Urban Legend13 May 202101:28:40

Last episode of the season and we decided to go back in time, to another century. They call it "the 20th century". And what did we bring back? Yeah, I know it says in the title but you could have played along. Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart, Alicia Witt, and Jordan Catalano. Yes, Dalia calls him that throughout the entirety of the episode. So yeah, Urban Legend. What more can we say?

The House Next Door (Aval)06 May 202101:22:34

TW/CW This film either depicts or discusses child murder, infanticide, and suicide.

This week we headed over to India to watch the horror movie “The House Next Door”, aka “Aval”. A nod to “The Exorcist” and some good ol’ fashioned ghost stories kept us guessing as to how this movie was going to end. The cinemotography was gorgeous and the fact that this was recorded in 3 languages simultaneously astounded us. For our history lesson, Dalia went back in time and scooped up some knowledge on trephination in South America and Mexico from over 1000 years ago.

My Bloody Valentine29 Apr 202101:32:53

My bloody valentine, my sweet bloody valentine… Yes, this week we followed up “House of Wax” with a bloody fun Jensen Ackles movie. Gotta represent those Winchester boys! We also figured out that this would be a fun drinking game. Everytime there’s a 3D shot, take a shot! We don’t drink so we just resorted to shouting “3D” at each other. During our real-world connection, Dalia takes us to Chile and discusses the 2010 Copiapó mining accident. And Alma shares a time she was late to work and no one noticed. Listen to this week’s episode to learn why.

House of Wax (2005)22 Apr 202101:41:04

Trigger warning / Content Warning:
The movie begins with a scene of child abuse. Even though we don’t go into detail, it is a tough subject and we suggest skipping over the beginning of the movie if the content is too disturbing.

House of Wax…what can we say about this movie? A lot, apparently. But when you have both Jared Padalecki and Paris Hilton in a fun horror flick, of course we’re going to enjoy discussing it. A short cut, a detour, and camping is just the right recipe for a great night of horror. “Supernatural” and “Simple Life” fans will not be disappointed.

No real-world connection this week. Look out for it on IGTV instead. Sorry, Dalia was under the weather and she didn’t want to rush it. Thank you for understanding.

Aliens15 Apr 202101:22:37

Why does a podcast episode begin with an apology? Because we promised our listeners that all three sisters would be discussing Aliens this week. However, we had an issue with audio and we needed to re-record without our very special guest, Daisy. We are planning on inviting her back in the future, so don't worry. For this episode, nostalgia is the theme. Here's a movie we have seen many times and still enjoy. I mean, come on, Sigourney Weaver. A sponsor drops their sponsorship and Dalia shares her obsession with Billy the Kid. We also learn about the life and background of one of the characters from Alien. We had lots of fun recording this episode...again. And we hope you enjoy.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark08 Apr 202101:27:25

Nostalgia time! Did you read “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” when you were younger? We sure did. And now we’re watching the movie and re-telling it in a very NSFW manner. Definitely no young ones around while we share this tale. We have some fun stories to share, Forrest Gump quotes, and then Dalia shares the plight of the brown, black, and poor who were shipped off to die in Vietnam. Bet you all didn’t know that Dalia could sneak in more history lessons for you in these horror flicks. She’s a sneaky one! So join in on this conversation, get a little nostalgic with these story retellings, and learn a little bit of our dark U.S. history.

Koko-di Koko-da01 Apr 202101:09:15

TW/CW: There is a child death, off camera sexual assault, and animal death. Oh my goodness, people. Our microphones, especially Dalia's, were super sensitive so you're going to hear a little bit of our lives in the background. But we're okay with that because we loved discussing this movie. A little French nursery rhyme enjoyed by a creepy Swedish trio of killers is just the perfect combo of hair raising material. Plus Dalia gives a lesson on 17th century lithotomy. Who'd have thought she could sneak some medical history into this one? Kick back, relax, and listen in to our discussion of this Shudder Swedish movie.

TW/CW: This episode discusses child death and suicide. If you feel that you cannot listen to this content, we completely understand. We want you to take care of you.

For those who do wish to continue with this episode...
This one was another doozie. We could not stop talking about this Spanish flick. Thank you, Cynthia, for this special request. We had so much fun discussing “The Orphanage” and it definitely shows in this episode. We also share the winner of our online poll, what movie we’re watching and talking you through for next time, and of course we found a way to discuss our dogs. We love our rescues! Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum18 Mar 202101:13:45

This is a great one this week. Honestly, though, we’re going to say that about every episode. But this one is so good we couldn’t stop talking about it. We watched and discussed Gonjiam-A Haunted Asylum, a South Korean found footage flick. Not only could we not stop talking about it, but we also ruin one of your favorite San Antonio ghost stories. Dalia ruins your fun at the Haunted Railroad Tracks in San Antonio and Alma describes our social media accounts in the most flattering way. Tune in for a great walk through of a fun found footage flick. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Alliteration is fun.

Ringu & Ring // Duking it out 12 Jan 202301:35:08

It's another two-fer episode! Ringu, the Japanese original, vs Ring, the American remake. We thought it'd be fun to get into both movies seeing as we were obviously going to start talking about one if discussing the other. We have opinions, lots of them. In addition to good movie conversations, we also get all biblical on your butts with a little Talmud talk. Tune in and find out how that naturally happened.

5th Street Revisits // Sweetheart12 Dec 202201:28:10

We're on a break, and not in the Rachel and Ross kinda way. New episodes return after the Holidays, but we decided we wanted to share a few of our favorite episodes from the past 2 years.

This week's reshared episode is our discussion on Sweetheart. Check it out and check out the movie before it leaves Netflix (Dec. 2022)!

5th Street Revisits // Gerardo Preciado05 Dec 202200:43:57

We're on a break, and not in the Rachel and Ross kinda way. New episodes return after the Holidays, but we decided we wanted to share a few of our favorite episodes from the past 2 years.

This episode, an interview with Gerardo Preciado, was originally shared Sept. 24, 2021. Since then, Gerardo has remained busy creating and we thought it'd be a great episode to re-share. Audio is not our finest work, sorry, but it's still such a fun discussion and we feel you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Ginger Snaps // It's a Sister Thing03 Nov 202201:17:00

Ginger Snaps! This is honestly one of those movies where you can just say the name and everyone will instantly get all kinds of mood. Mood, yes. It's a thing. This entire movie is a mood. We absolutely adore Ginger Snaps, the sister characters (because duh, we're sisters), and the awesome Canadian-ness of this wonderful flick. If you haven't watched this one yet you absolutely must. If it's been awhile, go now. Watch it! And also listen to us talk about it of course.

Movie Summary (IMDB):
Two death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf.

Jennifer's Body // Megan Fox deserves an Oscar06 Oct 202201:15:59

We will be the first to admit that the horrible marketing campaign for Jennifer's Body worked on one of our hosts. We actually didn't watch it until this year. I know, sorry! And unfortunately we were not hip to the incredible job that Megan Fox did with the poor misunderstood character of Jennifer until the ripe old age of now. We're kinda Team Jennifer here on 5th Street...boooooo "Needy".

Seriously, though. We dig deep into the discussion of how 20th Century Fox screwed up the PR campaign, the so-so writing of this now cult classic, and how Megan Fox alone is what made this movie watchable.

Film Summary:
A newly-possessed high-school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror? (IMDB)
