You better watch out...

Toss out those jack-o'-lanterns and slam the door on those trick or treaters because we're about to have a bloody good Christmas. This week, Cody and Matt check their stockings and discuss ferocious filmmaking ,narrative nuances, and grotesque gore. As expected, the boys go all out on Art the Clown while discussing physical bits, comic timing, and how David Howard Thornton has earned his place in horror history.

With Art, every list is a naughty list... and you're on it!

Ep. 125: The People Under the Stairs (1991)05 Oct 202401:58:14

BURN IN HELL!

This week, Matt and Cody are certainly the secretaries of something as they deep-dive into this Wes Craven cult classic, while also celebrating the birthdays of Fool, Wendy Robie, and one of the top two hosts of this program. The boys talk about the social and political ramifications of the film...just kidding...you know they have a field day with odd make-up choices, precarious tarot illustrations, fairy-tale parallels, doors in other doors, viciously adorable pups, one of the iconic mothers of horror, and why exactly are the people under there anyway...Not to mention: a fun recent celebrity run-in they had this spooky season.

This one's sure to scare your hair white so turn the tv towards the crack and  guard your doubloons!

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 116: Phantom of the Paradise (1974) & The Phantom18 May 202402:22:56

Life at last!

This week, Cody and Matt lay down some tasty jams and sizzling riffs in the second half of their De Palma De Double De Feature! They discuss tantalizing toe-tappers, superb cinematography, and that pretty wild Paul Williams. They also dive deep into the spooky resonance of theatrical superstitions while having real-time realizations of why Swan has a camera fixated on his bed.

Then, Matt is joined by the Grand Ghoul himself: The Phantom of Isaac Rother & The Phantoms! He's stopped by to give Night Howls the heebie-jeebies and talk all things rock and roll. He discusses his albums, his stage show, and how to get a great deal on a custom guitar!

Ep. 33: Night of the Living Dead (1968)06 Aug 202201:18:07

Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up. And this time, we don't just mean the hosts!

This week, Matt and Cody visit a rural Pennsylvania Farm House during the body-swinging sixties for what is unquestionably one of the most pivotal horror movies of all time. They discuss the birth of the modern zombie, the social and political themes, which of them would be left in the basement, and how some can-do attitude amounted to 60+ years of terror. Not to mention, what exactly is up with the body at the top of the stairs, which of these ghouls should be the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor,  and how exactly does 'Rock of Love' factor into all of this...

Board up the windows, exit the burning truck, and grab a non-human snack for consumption as the boys rise from the dead to chat about this classic...at least until they come and get them, Barbra!

Ep. 32: Popcorn (1991)30 Jul 202201:05:23

He haunts your dreams. He's back to avenge his own death. He preys on the young and defenseless. He's. . . Lanyard Gates?!

This week, join Cody and Matt at the concession stand as they celebrate the communal movie experience. They discuss all-night horrorthons, incredible theater gags, and one of their favorite veteran character actors to date. They also chew over the importance of a cohesive story and how being "fun" isn't the same as being "good" while debating the effectiveness of putting superstar mom Dee Wallace into a full body cast for a majority of her screen time. Choices were made. Faces were transplanted. Mosquitos were murdered. And that's not the half of it.

Grab a bucket, clean a theater, avoid your landlord, and join us for this salty, yet buttery, cult classic! Now in Stink-O-Vision!

Thanks for listening. . . and we'll see you at center stage. . . where we belong!

BONUS: Nope (2022)27 Jul 202201:21:20

This week, Matt and Cody see something truly out of this world with Jordan Peele's latest outing, Nope! They "peel" back the layers by analyzing the themes, scares, and cultural impact of the film, while still flapping their gums about their usual nonsense like two inflatable tube men along the side of a dusty trail. They give their props, like a good crew person would, to the now legendary Peele, Kaluuya, Palmer, and the already legendary Keith David. Do they find the key to success or is that key just stuck in a horse's ass? Only by listening can you find out!

Peak out from behind the clouds or slates of a barn wall and giddy up over to your two favorite ranch hands as they dig deep on being exceptional (like they would know), floating shoes, one-eyed purple people eaters, and so much more!

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 31: Revealer (2022) w/ Shaina Schrooten23 Jul 202201:26:02

This week, Matt and Cody end up reconnecting after some time apart and ranting about the latest Scream 6 news. Afterwards, they chat about one of Shudder's hottest releases, Revealer, with the star herself: Shaina Schrooten! Shaina is kind enough to put up with their shenanigans and goes deep into the process of making this movie, the relationship she formed with her costars, creating a character completely out of her wheelhouse, and trying to survive the apocalypse. They learn behind the scenes tidbits including: what it was like to film in the early days of the Pandemic, the value of multiple costume changes, her now iconic glasses, and what she got to take from the set. Not to mention filming with some of the creepiest crawlies the boys have seen yet.

It's Night Howls first guest, and there's no one better to join the madness than this uber talented star on the rise.

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 30: The Conjuring (2013)16 Jul 202201:13:26

They came, they saw, they Conjured.

*clap clap* This week, Cody and Matt enter the world of the Warrens. They talk the cultural impact of this franchise juggernaut, the effectiveness of perfect casting, and how an ideally  told haunted house story is a thing to behold. They also discuss the dangers of leaving your child alone with a potentially drugged grandparent and the real estate worries for the local raccoon population. Not to mention, the references to  other iconic haunted house films and even their own paranormal experiences if you dare.

Grab your red crayons, favorite music box or phone, and hide in a witch's wardrobe with the boys as they fall through the floorboards of a house and into one of James Wan's most quintessential releases.

BONUS: Monsterpalooza '2214 Jul 202201:01:58

Last month, Matt and Cody had their first Horror Convention experience with Monsterpalooza in Pasadena, CA. Here, they recap some things they  learned along the way and chat about meeting some heroes including: Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, and Jamie Kennedy. Not to mention the incredible vendors, staff, and creatures they met a long the way. Listen to the boys get second hand gitty about something that already happened and find out what some of these folks were like to meet in person.

Ep. 29: The Most Dangerous Game (1932)09 Jul 202201:01:25

This week, Matt and Cody jump from a sinking ship and unfortunately for you, they don't mean this show. They wash ashore with conversations all about Veteran Character Actors, gender norms for the 30's, more reasons to hate Gone With the Wind, how this story is more about a giant gorilla than anything else, and how they would try to survive if faced with these circumstances. It's an episode of laughs, crocs, plots, and booby traps galore!

Thanks for listening...and DON'T GO INTO THE MARSH!

Ep. 28: They Live (1988)02 Jul 202201:14:51

OBEY. CONSUME. LISTEN TO NIGHT HOWLS.

This week, Cody and Matt live it up with the John Carpenter classic about alien overlords and the professional wrestler ordained to stop them. We don't want to give anything away but this episode is a bit. . . Rowdy. They talk effective scoring, the importance this flick has on the contemporary art scene, and the scene-stealing power of Buck Flower. The boys also discuss the Max Headroom incident and just how badly Carpenter wanted to stick it to the Man.

Sure, we came here to chew bubblegum and talk movies. . . but isn't capitalism the more pressing problem?

OBEY. CONSUME. LISTEN TO NIGHT HOWLS.

Ep. 27: Game of Death (2017)25 Jun 202201:21:29

"With the clock ticking, is life worth living?
Make a choice, you or I;
Without decision- one will die.
In this quest, some are left behind.
This game will blow your mind."

This week, Matt and Cody prick their fingers and enter into a game with severe consequences. They chat about horny neighbors, hornier siblings, the real trouble of group hangs, and of course, one of the most clear and shining examples of a Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award nominee they have encountered...including Fred Gwynne himself. They talk about oiled cops, Ranger bops, eyes that pop, plans that flop, pizza apparel to shop, and a dog's love that'll never stop. Grab a mop and join them for the bloodiest game you've played since that one time you and your cousins tried to complete Monopoly.

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 26: The Ruins (2008)18 Jun 202201:03:24

It's not often that we leaf our comfort zone and branch out into something new. . . too much? We wouldn't want to shrub you the wrong way.

Anyways, this week Cody and Matt take a vacation to some mysterious ruins in Mexico! They talk mid-aughts trends, the ability to find a taxi literally anywhere, and the price you pay for being an ignorant tourist. They also talk some grisly body horror and the benefits of just enjoying the hotel pool.

As always, they discuss the suspension of disbelief with a character's age but it's a root point by now.

We're done, promise. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 115: Carrie (1976)11 May 202402:38:24

These are Godless times, Mrs. Snell...

It's their annual Mother's Day episode so this week, Matt and Cody finally chat about one of the films they reference most on this show and their second Stephen King adaptation of the year.  The boys talk iconic actors, diabolical mothers, and telekinetic super powers. Not to mention: difficult oral predicaments, the awkwardness of the high school locker room, subpar graffiti, what constituted texting in the 70's, and even their own prom experiences. You could say Brian truly has them in De Palma his hand.

Plus, Cody is joined by an extra special guest to figure out what is really going on with Carrie...and with him.

Eve may have been weak, but you certainly aren't if you make it this far so thanks for listening!

Ep. 25: Piranha (1978)11 Jun 202201:09:15

Come on in! The water's fishy!

This week, Matt and Cody go off the deep end with this 70's cult classic! What it lacks in riptides, it more than makes up for in loving rip-offs. The boys splash about the political themes, subversion of character stereotypes, and of course, are buoyed by a bevy of Veteran Character Actors. They get personal about animal attacks, oblong objects, and just how exactly Huckleberry Finn ties into all of this. You think Jack's dog is sick of listening to his stories? Imagine how they feel about each other's!

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 24: Friday the 13th (1980)04 Jun 202201:18:16

Doomed? We could have told you that 23 episodes ago.

When it comes to horror franchises and slasher masters, it doesn't get much bigger than this! This week, Cody and Matt head to Camp Crystal Lake to fix some gutters, play strip Monopoly, and. . . well, die. They talk the Mrs. Voorhees's that could have been, the local color around Crystal Lake, behind the scenes tidbits, and how fashionable the local whacko is.

It's not Summer until a few teenagers get brutally murdered in rural New Jersey!

Thanks for listening and Dammit, Ralph!

BONUS: The Sadness (2021)01 Jun 202200:56:26

Folks, we've got a doozy for ya. If there was ever a time to heed a warning, this is the time to heed. This movie has some extreme violence, including sexual. While we don't always warn for moments like this in movies, we wanted to re-iterate the warning at the top for those who may be especially affected.

In this bonus episode, Cody and Matt subject themselves to what is being touted as one of the most depraved zombie flicks of all time. They talk the importance of honest and grounded acting, real world fears and anxieties, and exactly how they found themselves even watching this movie. Not to mention our usual hunt for the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Award, offensive footwear, and the depravity of public transportation. It's a horrific display of eye jabs, neck stabs, secret labs, and zombie grabs!

Thanks for listening, now go take a shower!

Ep. 23: Wait Until Dark (1967)28 May 202201:12:25

No need to wait, our next episode is here!

This week, Matt and Cody discuss this classic play-turned-home-invasion-thriller. They talk about the legacy of this type of horror, the greatness of peerless Audrey Hepburn, power dynamics of hapless criminals, and the many many many hats/wigs of Alan Arkin. Does a character playing a character playing a character qualify for the illustrious Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award? Should children be allowed to save the day if they are absolutely irredeemable? If you take a picture, will it last longer? This is an episode you don't need to hide in a doll, but it will play you a fancy tune if you if you listen close enough.

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 22: The Hills Have Eyes (1977)21 May 202201:13:34

They knew they should've taken that left turn at Albequerque. . .

This week, Cody and Matt talk the ears off of those hills with their admiration for horror icon Wes Craven. They also discuss the danger of unfortunately timed picnics, Flintstones inspired jewelry, and a metaphorical representation of the economic gap between classes in the late 1970's. You know, standard fare. The boys chew on the idea of mountain men, the ideal American family, and just how exactly this can be transformed into a Broadway Musical.

There's never a dull moment spent with Jupiter, Mars, Pluto and. . . Uranus.

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 21: Hereditary (2018)14 May 202201:14:35

Ladies and Gentlemen...Her...editary! This week, Matt and Cody venture into the land of A24 and the directorial debut of one of Horror's Newest Hit-Makers, Ari Aster. They discuss the ins and outs of theories, symbolism, miniatures, acting methods, and they spend quite a bit of time in wonder at the majesty of Toni Collette. Not to mention, their preferred ritualistic sitting strategies. Jump in the backseat and pack a nut-less candy bar for this wild ride of generational trauma and ceremonial insanity!

Thanks for listening and Hail Paimon?

Ep. 20: Serial Mom (1994)07 May 202201:05:21

It's our special Mother's Day episode and we couldn't think of a better Mom to celebrate it with than one who will beat you mercilessly with a leg of lamb! This week, Cody and Matt discuss fame and crime, dogs that love to lick your feet, and why you should always rewind your tapes. They also dive into the subversive humor of director John Waters while figuring out how to "Send Yourself Roses." It's harder than you think.

Thanks for listening. . . but don't let us ever catch you wearing white shoes again.

Ep. 19: Nosferatu (1922)30 Apr 202201:10:46

This week, Matt and Cody jump into a lunatic's carriage  to visit the grandfather of all Vampires with Nosferatu! They talk about the legacy of vampires in film, the back-story of Nosferatu, ugly hyenas, spooky hand shadows, ominous fashion pieces, the power of speed effects, and of course, our nominees for the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award. Will it go to the legendary Max Schreck, to an entire village of pub dwellers, or once again to an older gentlemen who can't seem to remember his lines? Ironically for our first silent movie covered, only listening will tell! So, get out of that chair you've been sleeping in, put on a funny hat, grab a coffin of the dirt you were buried in, and join us for our earliest movie yet! Avoid the sun and stay in with us!

Ep. 18: Frankenstein (1931)23 Apr 202201:04:41

We've got a (James) Whale of a movie this week! It's the icon of icons: Frankenstein. Cody and Matt discuss the "tragedy" of parenthood, the morality of experimentation gone unchecked, and the job description for one (1) incredibly odd laboratory assistant. Other discussions include the pros and cons of physical media, meeting the icon himself last year, and  juggle options for the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award. In an unsurprising twist, they land on two old people struggling to get their lines out.

It's Man vs. Monster vs. Disgruntled Wedding Planner in this week's shocking episode! Grab a shovel and don't stand too close to the water!

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 17: Dead of Night (1945)16 Apr 202201:08:00

This week, Cody and Matt wake up from a terrible nightmare, only to realize they're still living that nightmare over and over...and no, this time they're not talking about their friendship, but about Dead of Night! They discuss this classic British film from the 40's and what some would call  the birth of the Horror Anthology. They discuss their picks for the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award, what they really would want to see behind a haunted mirror, and which of them is the real  dummy in the relationship. Not to mention, the horror of witnessing their future selves on full display in the Golf scene. And boy, do they really go on about that! Grab a stool (if you didn't scoot it too far in shock), an extra dash of sugar for Mr. Craig, and tuck this episode into bed like the ghostly little brother you didn't know was in the next room. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 114: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936)04 May 202401:34:37

They're  always looking for an excuse to sing.

This week, Cody and Matt take a stroll down one of London's most infamous streets looking for a shave... but find one of their most chaotic episodes yet! They discuss the villainous star-power of Tod Slaughter, the timelessness of the original tale, and the hilarity of a clueless romantic lead. There's also plenty of hilarious hats, nonsensical Nans, and mouth-watering meat pies to keep your bellies full.

Thank Todd for all these beautiful throats... and thank you for listening!

Ep. 16: The Blob (1958)09 Apr 202201:03:13

This week, Cody and Matt crash land in rural Pennsylvania to witness the ever-growing threat that is strawberry gelatin gone unchecked. They discuss the oldest teenagers seen on the podcast to date, the power of Burt Bacharach, and an incredible amount of Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award nominees.

We've got a tasty one for you! This week, Matt and Cody chat about the Mimi Cave directed Fresh and they somehow do it without an app. They talk the horrors of modern dating, city living, coded texts for future survival, which Marvel actor we'd least like to be captured by, sensitive needle-drops, and wonder at the discovery of Jojo T. Gibbs. Thanks for listening and for being a friend!

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, Cody and Matt find their luck amping up with our lucky 13th episode. This week, we pogo over this guilty pleasure classic from the early 90's and talk in terrible Irish accents (at least Cody does). Also discussed: A+ casting and vehicle choices, the incomparable Warwick Davis, and of course, how Jennifer Aniston was able to work that phone despite mystical adversity. If nothing else, Francis from Peewee's Big Adventure is in it, which is worth the price of admission alone. Clean shoes not required! Keep one ear on the pod and one eye on your gold! Ep. 113: Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) w/ Emily McClain27 Apr 202401:36:06

Are they being paid by the word?

This week, Matt and Cody are once again joined by playwright and educator Emily McClain to talk about more animatronic killers and sadly less Nicolas Cage. The gang discusses major differences between the game source material and how this version matches up against it's own copycats...or maybe cupcakes in this instance. Not to mention: influencers infringing upon Hollywood's dayplayers, what time period we think the film may be set in, the Blumhouse of it all, choreographed child dance sequences, the power of Matthew Lillard, and who the hell wants to go to Nebraska anyway.

Don't open that fridge and don't forget to lock the door...

We make like Gale's Scream 3 bangs and keep it short, just kidding, it's our longest episode yet. We'll 'be right back' with our regular episodes Saturday, but couldn't miss an opportunity to pick up the call. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 111: Dark Harvest (2023)13 Apr 202401:52:40

It's Bud Time!

This week, Matt and Cody hot-wire a car, a few in fact, in continuation of their look back at 2023, and just in time for this year's Harvest. The boys talk novel inspiration, 50's perspiration, and Misfits appropriation. They have a "Hay"day with the lure and a Field day with the acting choices. Not to mention: fuzzy cornfields, drunken parental units, lengthy hallways, what exactly some of those boys were really doing on Hype Night, and which graveyard you could find them hiding out in during the Run.

There may not be any stops on the black top road, but there's certainly a lot of laughs on the way down it.

Thanks for listening!

Ep. 110: M3GAN (2022)06 Apr 202401:33:44

She's lean. She's mean. She's an incredibly entertaining machine.

This week, Cody and Matt begin their look back at 2023 with the little robot girl that could. The boys discuss Blumhouse's newfound aesthetic, the terror of technology, and the elements that make a slasher icon. Surprising absolutely nobody, they latch on to the seasoned character actress next door while finding any excuse to bust into song. It's a pretty run-of-the-mill routine at this point.

Make sure your devices are charged and your front bumper is free of debris because Night Howls is getting an upgrade!

Thanks for listening!
