Next of Kin The Podcast is back with season 3! I'm your host Emma, a British Expat, Mumpreneur and toddler Mum, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.

Simone grew up as a third culture kid, moving around multiple countries before settling in the UAE when she was 10 years old. Once she had her children she decided to move back to Abu Dhabi and set up the support network that she wished she had during her pregnancies and postpartum, Eklektik Mama.
In this episode we discuss:
Growing up as an expat, and what we can learn from her experience when bringing up our own third-culture kids
Abu Dhabi and what it's like to live in Abu Dhabi as a family
Maternal depression and the loneliness of expat motherhood
Creating Eklektik Mama and the fabulous support and events that it provides the Mums of Abu Dhabi

I have wanted to make a comprehensive guide to your HR rights and Maternity Leave in the UAE since I started the podcast, but it was important that I found the right information. So I am beyond thrilled to announce today's guest Sarah Brooks, Founder of Fikrah HR. With over 20 years of experience in HR, Sarah was named one of the top 101 global HR minds in the hotel industry at the World HR Congress in 2019 and 2020.
Sarah answers all of our burning questions when it comes to our HR rights around pregnancy, maternity and parental leave in Dubai and the UAE as a whole.
When do I need to tell my employer I am pregnant in the UAE?
Do HR laws change between mainland and freezone companies?
Will UAE employers be notified by my health insurer?
How to calculate maternity leave in the UAE
How many days paternity leave in the UAE?
Is there any miscarriage leave in the UAE?
Can I be made redundant whilst on maternity leave?
What if my employer is not following the law?
What happens if I am pregnant and unmarried in the UAE?
... and so much more
The maternity leave article in MOHRE law is Number 30 for reference and the parental leave is defined under article 32 clause 1b.

You'll hear me dive straight into the practical advice of budgeting, the key principles she advises to save for whatever your financial goal may be, and specifically how to budget for starting a business. Ep 34: Rachel from Mama Hub on Leaving Corporate Life to Help Mums Find Their Village
Next of Kin The Podcast is back with season 2! I'm Emma, a British Expat, Mumpreneur and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.
I am firmly in my Mumpreneur era, so season 2 is Career Season. Join me as I explore the collision between careers and motherhood. I'll be speaking to insightful guests, delving into practical tips and inspiring stories. All through the lens of Dubai expat life.
On today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Rachel Smylie the Founder of Mama Hub here in Dubai. I met Rachel at my very first Ripe Market for Next of Kin and we got chatting about how Mums here in Dubai could really do with everything being collated in one place. Well mere months later Rachel launched Mama Hub and we had a full circle moment, back at Ripe Market, when we collaborated on The Careers Club event.
On this episode we talk about the inspiration behind Mama Hub and Rachel's own Motherhood experience, moving to Dubai 7 months pregnant, comparing the care to the more formalized approach that she had received in Australia, and the impossible juggle of putting the kids to bed when you are meant to be on work calls, and how that ultimately led her to quit corporate life and go it alone.
The main reason that I asked Rachel to join me on the podcast is because I personally love Mama Hub! I take Bonnie to their FREE play dates most weeks and I eagerly anticipate the weekly roundup email. If you are a long-time listener, you'll know that last year I joked about how someone really needed to create a resource for freelance Mums in Dubai, and well, spoiler alert, it look's like Rachel has nailed it!

On today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Carina Harvey about all things identity, which is also the name of her wonderful podcast exploring how people who have been through huge life changes (like motherhood!) and how they were able to find themselves again afterwards.
As this is the Career Season, there were 3 reasons why I was keen to chat to Carina, firstly, to understand how she works with people, drawing on her styling, life purpose coaching and NLP to get to the core of who they really are and to bring out their resilience and confidence. This helps people who are feeling lost and don't know what their next career step should be. Secondly, I wanted to hear about the work Carina is doing with various organisations to support Mums who want to return to work. And, lastly, I'm sure I will have some listeners interested in the idea of becoming a Life Coach, so I asked Carina about the skills needed to be one. We even touch on manifesting and how she uses it in her own life and when working with others.

On today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Emma, the Founder of My Little Barfi. An ex-teacher, turned stay-at-home-Mum, turned Brand Founder. Her unique brand includes beautiful South Asian inspired prints and designs. Emma created the brand when she noticed the lack of kid and parent-friendly clothing with the representation of South Asian cultures. Ep 28: Season Finale! New Year's Changes and De-Influencing Newborn Essentials
Welcome to episode 28, the season 1 finale of Next of Kin Parents Podcast!
I'm Emma, a British Expat, and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.
On today's episode, I am rounding off my first season of the podcast by bringing you up to date on my life right now and how I am re-prioritizing my life in 2024. I have broken my goals down into work, family, and self-care as I try to find the ultimate balance, not an easy task as a Mumpreneur, I know!
I decided to go back to my roots for this episode by following the format of my early episodes, and today's segment will be on de-influencing 10 so-called newborn 'essentials'. My Mum-llema for the week is for you to let me know what you bought for your newborn, thinking it was essential, but it really wasn't. Check out my blog for more info.

Ep 27: From Humanitarian Work to Nappies and Nannies with Anushka from Nannies and More
Welcome to episode 27 of Next of Kin Parents Podcast! I'm Emma, a British Expat, and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.
I am so pleased to have squeezed this chat with Anushka into my penultimate episode of season 1. Anushka is the Managing Director and Co-Founder of Derby Home Health and Nannies and More, but in her formed career she worked in Reproductive Health in crisis zones. But when Anushka welcomed her daughter to the world she decided to move back to Dubai to be closer to family, and this is when she set about using her background and values to set up Derby Home Health, and she quickly discovered the need for more support options for new parents so Nannies and More was created.
I was intrigued to hear what Anushka's former career entailed and how she has handled leaving that role and moving back to Dubai. I also wanted to pick Anushka's brains about all things Nannies and how Nannies and More are doing things differently.

In today's episode, I am sharing the birth story of my daughter Bonnie, born at Kings College Hospital Dubai, UAE, back in October 2022. I sat down when she was 9 months old and recorded the story of her birth in case I, or her, would ever be interested in it. What is it like giving birth in Dubai
Giving birth in Dubai compared to the UK
Giving birth unmarried UAE
Birth at Kings College Dubai UAE
Positive birth stories

What is the Montessori approach?
What is the difference between Montessori schools and traditional schooling?

Ep 11: Steph from Tots Play on baby development focused play
Welcome to episode 11 of Next of Kin Parents Podcast! I'm Emma, a British Expat, and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.
Today I am joined on the podcast by Steph from Tots Play. Originally from Liverpool, Steph has 10 years of experience as a teacher specialising in Early Years, and recently bought Tots Play, baby and toddler development classes, over to Dubai from the UK. I first met Steph a few months ago when I started taking Bonnie to her Discovery Tots classes, which I highly recommend!
In this episode, we talk about baby development and how to play with your baby, especially in the early months. Steph is full of encouraging tips and advice from how to leave the house for the first time on your own with a newborn, to why baby sign language, yoga, and tummy time are recommended, and tips on how to try them out with your baby.
I really appreciate Steph opening up about her tough feeding journey, I can't believe after having to undergo surgery she was still encouraged to breastfeed, and after this chat, I wish we could eradicate the judgment around how we feed our babies.
Of course, I personally also had to ask Steph about how she was finding owning her first business so I can take some learnings for Next of Kin!

Welcome to episode 10 of Next of Kin Parents Podcast! I'm Emma, a British Expat, and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.
Today I am joined on the podcast by Julie Haydn-Higgins aka The IG Midwife. Julie is a UK-trained Midwife with 18 years of experience. We'll talk in-depth about how her own complicated pregnancies, adoption, and motherhood journey have helped her to become such a passionate Midwife. Not only is Julie a practicing Midwife but she works tirelessly to improve maternal care and to create the community that we are lacking as expats. If that wasn't enough she also runs 2 companies; Women and Families Wellbeing and British Care.
It was so enjoyable to get to know Julie and find out about her life and what makes her so positive and able to live life to the fullest. She also covered all of the most asked questions:
Tips for easing morning sickness
Does it matter how much weight you gain in pregnancy? What is normal?
How will I know when I am in labour?
How to choose a good doctor
When to see a doctor
What causes flat head syndrome and how to prevent it?
How do I nurture my baby into a happy and confident adult?
When can a baby fly and top tips for the plane
And so much more!
TRIGGER WARNING, do be advised that we briefly discuss pre-term births and baby loss as this was sadly part of Julie's own motherhood journey

As always I pose a Mum-llema (spoiler: how do you make time for yourself as a Mum so that you don't burn out?) and I have a recommendation of books for babies.

I also managed to take away some tips when it comes to getting my baby to take a bottle, and we discuss the sleep coaching industry and what makes her approach gentle and holistic.

Becoming a Mum and her experience with postnatal depression was the catalyst for Nikki to take a completely new route from hairdressing to becoming a coach, speaker, and maternal mental health advocate. The simplicity of Nikki's approach, as well as her wonderfully warm personality, is what drew me to want her to be my very first guest here on Next of Kin. In this episode, we get chatting about some of the key pillars of positive mental health for all parents whether they are struggling with postpartum depression, anxiety or are coping just fine, there are strategies, tools, and support that you can implement for yourself to build a mental health or self-care toolkit.
