The Dobbs Voter: Will Abortion Move Voters?21 Sep 202200:57:43
The Dobbs Voter. Will she make all the difference in November?

After the Dobbs decision overturning Roe V Wade there’s been a surge in new voter registration among women. These voters are young and lean left. Is their enthusiasm to vote matched by equal enthusiasm on the other side? What does the data tell us and what can we expect in November?

We discuss it all with a panel of experts who are paying close attention to the ways the Court’s abortion ruling is shifting political expectations. Lauren Leader, co-founder and CEO of All in Together, a non-partisan non-profit women's civic education organization. Sarah Longwell publisher of the Bulwark and founder of the Republican Accountability Project. And Amanda Brown Lierman Executive Director at Supermajority, which focuses on bringing women together as a political force and protecting women's rights.

This panel will give you a window into what’s changed post Dobbs, when we’ll know the impact of the Dobbs voter, and if she’ll change our political landscape in the midterms and beyond.

Isn’t it Time for Male Birth Control?14 Sep 202200:53:16
Vasectomies are on the rise, ever since the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe versus Wade. Because plenty of men are also interested in avoiding unwanted pregnancies. So would they be willing to do what women do and take birth control? Some male birth control products are showing promising signs in clinical trials.

So how far are we from bringing male birth control to market? Would men be willing to take it? And what’s the hold up – why doesn’t this exist already?

The group of experts we gathered tell us men are ready for contraception. We’re waiting on the system to catch up to our needs. To discuss it all I’m joined by Dr. Stephanie Page
Professor of Medicine and Board Certified Endocrinologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is helping to conduct a trial for a hormonal contraceptive gel for men. Heather Vahdat is Executive director of the Male Contraceptive Initiative, a nonprofit that funds research into non-hormonal, reversible male birth control. Dr. Ariel Moradzadeh, is a Men’s Health and Reproductive Urologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. And Dr. Emily Morse founder and host of the #1 Sexuality podcast on iTunes, Sex with Emily.

Public Image And Women Who Don’t Conform31 Aug 202200:53:17
Finland’s female prime minister scandalized critics by getting caught on video, wait for it, dancing with friends. One of Canada’s most esteemed anchors was fired, after an executive expressed disappointment in her decision to stop coloring her grey hair. But Gen Z isn’t having it. Instead of conforming to project the perfect life, they’re going the other way: bragging to their online audiences about their failures, oddities and dramas.

Today we’re talking about public image. How expectations for women have and haven’t changed. How younger generations are going their own way.

Rescuing Our Schools24 Aug 202200:46:13
School boards have become political battlegrounds. Culture wars are centering on the classroom and teachers – underpaid and often feeling unsafe and unheard – are increasingly exiting the profession. None of this is improving the reality for students who are struggling with unprecedented learning loss and mental health challenges as a result of the pandemic.

In this podcast we talk with a group of people who are working on solutions. Emma Bloomberg, the founder and CEO of Murmuration, is working to get more people involved in school board level. John Della Volpe, Director of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, focuses on how Gen Z can play a role. Adonica Duggan, CEO of Baton Rouge Alliance for Students, is working on student focused reforms. And Romy Drucker of the K-12 Education Program at the Walton Family Foundation looks at innovative practices that can make work more sustainable for teachers, and close learning gaps for students.

We learn about their work, ask their take on the politics of distraction around schooling, and take your questions.

What We Do and Don’t Know About Depression03 Aug 202200:54:29
In this episode we dive into the roots of depression, how antidepressants work, and additional treatments that are proven effective at improving wellbeing and mood. The News Not Noise audience reacted with intense emotion when we reported on a recent umbrella study concluding that decades of research shows that a lack of serotonin is not the root driver of depression overall. So we decided to ask experts about the latest research on depression and interventions including antidepressants, psychedelics, plant based medicine, cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma therapy and more.

With no singular approach to treatment in mind, I speak to Dr. Philip Cowen, a Professor of Psycho-Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, and Dr. Samantha Boardman a Psychiatrist and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, to hear their own learnings about depression and mental health treatment. I am also joined by writer, model, and actress Paulina Porizkova who shares her personal experiences with mental health and wellbeing.

The big takeaway: one size does not fit all.

This episode contains content about depression, anxiety, and mental health, which some listeners might find upsetting.

What We’ve Learned From The Jan 6th Hearings13 Jul 202200:57:53
A year and a half after rioters stormed the Capitol, the Jan. 6th Committee’s public hearings are revealing why that mob headed to the Capitol and what role Trump and his team played.

In this week’s episode of the News Not Noise Podcast, I speak with US attorney and national security prosecutor Barb McQuade and Alan Rozenshtein, senior editor at Lawfare and associate professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School. We discuss the new evidence uncovered through the Jan 6 hearings. The importance of Team Trump’s contacts with the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys. And why both guests believe that the evidence uncovered by the Committee should lead the Department of Justice to bring criminal charges.

They also answer your questions.

Washington Divided: Power, Politics and What Comes Next22 Nov 202200:35:44
Republicans held the House. Democrats the Senate. But the margins couldn’t be slimmer. And the standoff ahead of 2024 is already taking shape.

Can anything get done? Is a next generation of leadership ready to take the helm? And will the policies that you care about even make the agenda?

We answer those questions with two experts: Jake Sherman, founder of Punchbowl News, a media company all about Capitol Hill. He's covered national politics for more than a decade.

And Margaret Talev, the managing editor of politics for Axios and a CNN political analyst. She discusses Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump and the Democrats who could rise in 2024. It’s all starting now.

Reproductive Rights Now: What’s Changed?06 Jul 202200:56:28
How will the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe V. Wade change reproductive choices and even personal health in states across the country?

Hillary Schneller, a Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights and co-counsel on the Dobbs case, Jodi Hicks, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and Mary Ziegler, a legal expert on the history of abortion in America, all join this discussion which we originally held live on the Clubhouse app.

They answer your questions about efforts to block access to medication abortion; the Biden administration’s options for protecting reproductive rights; what legal challenges can be brought against states that attempt to criminalize women who have miscarriages or cross state lines for abortions; whether contraception, IVF, and fertility treatments will be affected; possible impact on other pre-established personal liberties. The Court’s Abortion Ruling, Explained25 Jun 202200:35:04
In a staggering decision the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away 50 years of an established right to an abortion for women and girls in America. In this conversation Ben Wittes, editor in chief of Lawfare and a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution, breaks down the ruling. He offers a calm and sober explanation of what it means for pregnant people in states that will ban abortion, and what other rights might fall as a result of this decision. We also discuss what the effort to re-establish abortion rights in America might look like.

You can find Ben Wittes’ work on lawfareblog.com and The Lawfare Podcast. Please see the News Not Noise letter on Bulletin.com for more details on the laws in each state. And check out our Instagram for ongoing updates on this breaking story.

Jan. 6 Hearings and Criminal Charges22 Jun 202200:23:41
What criminal charges could come from the January 6th investigation? Could anyone other than Trump get charged? And what might that look like.

Loyola Law School professor and constitutional law expert Jessica Levinson walks us through the possible charges, why Trump’s state of mind matters so much, the evidence to date, and the difficult questions involved in prosecuting a former President of the United States. We also discuss the legal issues related to actions by Rudy Giuliani, Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife Ginni Thomas and Trump attorney John Eastman. Plus, Mike Pence’s place in history.

Levinson is a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, and she lectures in the areas of constitutional law and election law. She is the host of the Passing Judgment Podcast.

Prior to her teaching post, Levinson was a law clerk to Honorable James V. Selna of the Central District of California, practiced with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and served as the Director of Political Reform at the Center for Governmental Studies.

Antigone Davis is the head of global safety at META, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook. Here we discuss new tools the company has just released to give teens with mental health challenges a more positive experience using the product. We discuss how the tools work, what problems they’re meant to remedy and what else the company can or should do to ensure their products are safe for children.

News Not Noise delivers its news on Instagram, and its newsletter through the Bulletin writers program, which is also part of META. We know first hand the benefits of these platforms and their downsides as well; we have and will continue to report on these serious issues. Please take the time to listen to this conversation to learn more about how the tools are meant to work, the known and unknown harms to children and what can be done about them.

Gun Reform: How We Got Here, What You Can Do08 Jun 202200:43:41
The Uvalde and Buffalo shootings were two of at least 18 mass shooting incidents in the US in 2022. How did we get here? Why do we accept this? And what can you do to move the needle?

In this special episode, Shannon Watts of Mothers Demand Action and Becky Pringle of the National Education Association answer some of your many questions. Among them: why lawmakers are loathe to pass gun safety reforms supported by the majority of Americans. What teachers are prepared to do to make schools safer. And where you can act to make a difference.

Watts has been involved in anti-gun violence activism since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, and explains where progress has been made.

Pringle, a teacher as well as a union organizer, tells us how teachers in America are feeling and why arming them and adding school shooter drills is not the answer. Both women provide solutions and actions you can take.

For obvious reasons this episode is a little longer than normal. It includes disturbing material so give yourself permission to stop or skip sections if the content is too upsetting for you.

To get involved with Moms Demand Action, text “ACT” to 64433 to learn about the ways you can take action in your community, or text “BOLD” to 64433 to reach your senator.

Speeches that Could have Changed History with Jeffrey Nussbaum01 Jun 202200:29:43
We know about the most famous speeches, but what about the ones that were never delivered? Presidential Speechwriter Jeffrey Nussbaum took a look at some of history’s most influential speeches left undelivered. He shares a poignant story Hillary Clinton planned to recount in her victory speech, had she won the 2016 US Presidential Election. We learn about John Lewis’ intention to make his speech at the March on Washington in 1963 during the Civil Rights much more fiery, and how a verbal misstep during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis could have launched us into nuclear war.

Nussbaum was most recently a speechwriter for President Joe Biden, and is among the Democratic party’s top speechwriters. He is now the author of the newly released book, “Undelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Rewritten History.”

Putin, NATO and Brittney Griner with Ian Bremmer25 May 202200:26:35
Are rumors that Putin has cancer true? What are the chances WNBA star Brittney Griner is released soon? And what does it mean if Finland and Sweden join NATO, quickly?

Political scientist Ian Bremmer shares his insight on these topics and the future of the fight against Russia in Ukraine in this episode. We also get into his new book, “The Power of Crisis: How Three Threats – and Our Response – Will Change the World.” He argues that three new crises will force change on us, that will lead to a more cooperative and productive future. Among the surprises: he says COVID wasn’t a big enough crisis to force change, and the world is doing better fighting climate change than you might think. We get into all of it in this episode.

Bremmer is an expert on global political risk and the founder of political risk research and consulting firm Eurasia Group.

The Mainstreaming of Hate with ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt18 May 202200:30:08
The 18-year-old gunman who opened fire on a Buffalo grocery store over the weekend, killing 10 mostly Black victims, cited the ”Great Replacement Theory” in his manifesto. So what is that, exactly? And how does it find its way into mainstream culture?

This conversation with the Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt was taped just days before that shooting. Here Greenblatt explains the origins of the troubling conspiracy theory that motivated the shooter. We discuss Tucker Carlson, extremist politicians, and the role of tech giants and media in disseminating white nationalist ideas. In Greenblatt’s view, all this drives a rise in anti-semitism, racism and threats of real world violence. Greenblatt explains the work the ADL is doing now – and has done over the last 100 years – to combat anti-semitism and hate.

Greenblatt is the CEO of the ADL. He previously served as the Special Assistant to President Obama at the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation. He co-founded Ethos Water in 2002, which was acquired by Starbucks. Greenblatt is the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, and he and his wife, an Iranian Jewish refugee, are parents to three children.

How We Spend with Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer11 May 202200:24:59
After retiring as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer founded USAFacts, to make government data accessible to the general public. He wants to help Americans understand how the government spends our money and why. So every year at tax time USAFacts releases an annual 10-K report on government financial performance – something public companies are already required to do. He thinks the government should be required to turn out the same kind of report, but until they do he’s got it covered. His annual 10k is meant to give us a better picture of how we’re living, what we’re spending on, and where we’re making improvements. And he breaks some of it down in this conversation. It gave me a different perspective on how to suss the effectiveness of our government.

USAFacts is a nonprofit, nonpartisan civic organization and a News Not Noise content partner. Ballmer ran Microsoft from 2000-2014. In addition to his role at USAFacts, Ballmer teaches at Stanford University’s business school and is the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.

America After Roe04 May 202200:22:27
Roe v. Wade is in jeopardy. This week Politico published a draft Supreme Court decision that, if issued, would overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v Wade. It would immediately ban or restrict access to abortion for people in about half the states. What are abortion rights advocates doing to prepare? In California, they are preparing to create an abortion sanctuary state open to people from across the country.

On this week’s episode of the News Not Noise Podcast, we speak with Planned Parenthood Los Angeles’ Sue Dunlap, who discusses the steps her clinic is taking to ensure people in other states can travel to Los Angeles to seek abortion there, at no cost to them. She also discusses the impact this decision could have on businesses, the training of medical students, and other rights we take for granted.

Dunlap is the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. She is also a former Deputy Political Director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in Washington, D.C.

No Red Wave: Making Sense of the Midterms10 Nov 202200:18:42
The big loser in the 2022 midterms: conventional wisdom. The late punditry was all wrong. Enthusiasm was high on both sides. There was no red wave. Women did turn out to vote on abortion. Trumpism suffered some body blows and election deniers did not sweep the board. Importantly voters seemed motivated by multiple issues at once – which shouldn’t be shocking but was discounted by the pundits in the final days of the campaign.

To break down what we know right now, what it means for issues you care about, control of Congress and the 2024 presidential race, I spoke with NPR’s National Political Correspondent, Mara Liasson. She covers the White House, Congress, elections and political trends and is one of the most thoughtful and informed journalists covering politics today.

Beyond the podium19 Apr 202200:34:38
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has a front row to all things Washington. Psaki is a veteran of public service, and as the face of the overnight change demonstrated by President Biden’s first day in office, she embodies cool, calm, and collected in her daily press briefings.

But Psaki gets personal with News Not Noise, sharing how she really feels about the Republican attack on LGBTQ+ rights and giving us a glimpse of what it’s like being a mother of two young children while working in the White House. Plus, she addresses student loan debt and rising gas prices and explains why the Department of Justice has been so slow rolling in their charges against Capitol Rioters for their roles on January 6.

She was previously the communications director during the Obama Administration, and prior to that, Psaki worked as a traveling press secretary during Senator Obama’s campaign for the presidency.

How to help Ukraine29 Mar 202200:35:57
In this episode, Jessica speaks to three women who are making a difference.

You’ve asked what you can do to help the people of Ukraine. We found three women running remarkable non-profit efforts delivering direct aid to Ukrainians under fire in the country and refugees who have fled. Here they explain the work they’re doing and the needs that remain.

Collectively they are evacuating orphans and the elderly; delivering vital first aid to the front lines of the war; and providing daily essentials – including food, clothing, even money – to Ukrainians under siege and those who have fled.

Why Putin didn’t invade under Trump with Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch22 Mar 202200:26:01
Marie Yovanovitch was the US Ambassador to Ukraine from 2016 until 2019. She held many senior government positions during her thirty-three-year diplomatic career including serving as Ambassador to two other former Soviet countries, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

However, her career was derailed after she became the target of a disinformation and smear campaign led by then President Donald Trump’s private attorney, Rudy Giuliani. Her abrupt recall from her post in Ukraine led to her astounding testimony in the first impeachment trial of President Trump.

Yovanovitch quietly retired from the State Department in 2020 and is now a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as well as a fellow at Georgetown University. Her new book is a timely and inspiring new memoir, 'Lessons From the Edge'.

Pressman is a developmental psychologist, an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital, and the host of the Raising Good Humans Podcast.

If you use a computer or a smartphone, this one is worth a listen.

Downloading an app is easy but behind every download is a difficult question: is the convenience this provides worth whatever personal data you agree to exchange? We live in a world where increasingly, everything from your phone to your neighborhood coffee shop to your tv is harvesting your personal data and privacy seems dead.

Heather Kelly is a Washington Post reporter covering technology and the ways in which it affects our lives. She publishes widely read and super-useful pieces instructing us how to set our devices and apps in order to enjoy a tech enabled life while minimizing our exposure to intrusive tracking.

Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Delivering Results04 Nov 202200:27:52
Former presidential candidate-turned-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has a pricey task before him: how to spend $600 billion over 5 years to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure.

He sat down with News Not Noise to tell us about some of those projects and how he believes they’ll benefit citizens across the nation. We tackle some big issues: inflation, climate change, the DOT’s work to ease holiday travel challenges and the midterms: why democracy is on the ballot this year.

He tells us why even in the face of political extremism, he's still optimistic about the country's future.

You can check out the airline dashboard he mentions here:

Rekindling the human spirit with Agapi Stassinopoulos19 Feb 202200:20:27
In this episode, we take a break from the dizzying news cycle to refocus our energy on the human spirit and our well-being. The best-selling author and motivational speaker Agapi Stassinopoulos walks us through her journey finding gratitude and practicing mindfulness and compassion. We discuss her new book “Speaking with Spirit: 52 prayers to guide, inspire, and uplift you.”

It doesn’t matter what you believe in. Finding prayer can mean something different to everyone. Stassinopoulos says we all have the power to focus on the present, find our inner voice and lead with courage. To let go of the pressure and not hold ourselves to standards of perfection.

Stassinopoulos is also the author of “Unbinding the Heart: A Dose of Greek Wisdom, Generosity, and Unconditional Love,” “Wake Up to the Joy of You: 52 Meditations and Practices for a Calmer, Happier Life,” “Conversations with the Goddesses” and “Gods and Goddesses in Love.” Today she leads workshops at Thrive Global, a technology company focused on ending the “burnout epidemic,” founded by her sister Arianna Huffington.

What is long Covid?08 Feb 202200:26:20
Millions of Americans have recovered from mild cases of Covid-19, only to later experience a range of debilitating, chronic symptoms of the virus.

In this episode, we look beyond the daily pandemic headlines and turn our attention to one group suffering from a different kind of epidemic: people with long-haul Covid-19.

What is it? What causes it? Who is susceptible and where does research into possible treatments stand? And what does recovery look like?

Dr. Jason Maley provides answers. He is an attending physician in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

A lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Maley is also an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, became a resident at the University of Pennsylvania hospital and earned a fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Making remote work, work with Harvard Business Professor Tsedal Neeley25 Jan 202200:26:34
We keep hearing work is changing for good. This is the era of the employee. And no one knows what the future looks like or what it’ll take to make workers happy.

Professor Tsedal Neeley says this is not actually a mystery.  She is a Senior Associate Dean and Professor at Harvard Business School.  She believes remote work -- in some form -- is here to stay. And she’s been studying best practices since well before the pandemic. She has advice for the best way to get the job you want, hire the employees who will really fit, and grow with the changing economy.

Here she gets into what’s behind ‘the great resignation’, labor shortages, zoom fatigue, tech exhaustion, and why young people may have a surprising advantage in the modern workplace.

Professor Tsedal Neeley has worked in strategy and global customer experience roles at major companies, received academic awards from Harvard and Stanford, is fluent in four languages, and holds a patent for her software simulation on global collaboration.

Neeley's latest book is “Remote Work Revolution”.

Reclaiming creativity in a too-busy world with Eve Rodsky19 Jan 202200:39:15
Eve Rodsky helped start a long overdue national conversation around equality of labor and time on the home front. Eventually, she realized that even when the domestic workload becomes more equitable, people still say something is missing in their lives and that something is personal creativity.

Rodsky calls this missing piece “Unicorn Space” — and defines it as the active and open pursuit of creative self-expression in any form that is fulfilling. She helps readers embrace all the unlikely, surprising, and delightful places where their own Unicorn Space may be found and says creativity is not optional. It’s essential.

She talks to us about manifesting our own Unicorn Space in a too-busy life.

Eve Rodsky received her B.A. from the University of Michigan, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School. She worked at J.P. Morgan and then created the Philanthropy Advisory Group to advise families and charitable foundations on best practices. Rodsky was raised by a single mom in New York City and now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three children.

How to live longer and better with Dan Buettner04 Jan 202200:48:36
Did you know that some of the longest living, healthiest people on the planet have never been to the gym? They don’t go on special diets or attend retreats or travel to the most exotic places. The man I interview today says they stay healthier and happier for longer than most.

Dan Buettner has studied people who live in the Blue Zones – those are 5 regions of the world where an outsize number of people live past 100 and the’re vital for more of those years. Buettner analyzed what people in the Blue Zones have in common and distilled these learnings into strategies he summarized in his best selling books about the Blue Zones.

His latest, The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer, Healthier Life is a step-by-step guide to adopting the habits of people living in the Blue Zones. It’s a strategy to help you transform how you eat, exercise, socialize, build your community, find your purpose and thrive. Buettner presents through provoking ideas about everything from how to choose friends to the value of having sex late in life.  Even if you don’t agree with everything here, the conversation is valuable.  Buettner says, even adopting some of these life shifts could change the quality of your every day.

Skid row stylist Shirley Raines brings the eyelashes, the masks, and the love22 Dec 202100:27:20
When Shirley Raines started doing hair for half a dozen unhoused women, she had no idea her passion project would become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving hundreds in LA’s Skid Row every week. Through Beauty 2 The Streetz, Raines brings much-needed warmth, humanity, comfort, and even fun to the homeless population in downtown Los Angeles. And COVID didn’t slow her down at all: She just won CNN’s 2021 Hero of the Year award.

I got to speak with Raines about how working in the streets helped heal her trauma, what she believes our societal responsibility is toward our unhoused neighbors, and why sometimes all they need is to be kindly called by their own name.

Shirley Raines is one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever interviewed. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Abortion rights under fire with Hillary Schneller11 Dec 202100:22:01
The future of abortion in America is on the line. The Supreme Court has just ruled on a case and is preparing a decision on a second that could end Roe v Wade. In this episode, I talk to the co-lead counsel on one of the abortion cases before the US Supreme Court, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Hillary Schneller is Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights. The group is leading the fight against both the Texas 6-week abortion ban and the Mississippi 15-week abortion ban.

We spoke Friday, hours after the Supreme Court ruled on the Texas law. Justices found that abortion providers can challenge the state’s abortion law in lower courts. But they did not stay the law, meaning the near abortion ban stays in effect and women in Texas can’t get an abortion after 6 weeks. It also means that vigilante citizens can bring enforcement cases against abortion providers and others.

At the same time the country anxiously awaits a ruling in another case. Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization asks the court to overturn Roe v Wade, and find that women don’t have a constitutionally protected right to abortion.

In this episode we discuss what the lawyers argued before the court, what it all means, and what resources pregnant people and reproductive rights activists have if Roe is gutted.

Ending gun violence in America’s schools07 Dec 202100:25:50
In this episode, I talk to two of the people working to end gun violence in American schools.

Sari Kaufman survived the school shooting as a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. She was a lead organizer of the March For Our Lives and a co-founder of the MyVote Project, a student-led education organization to educate voters. She is currently a sophomore at Yale University, studying political science.

Shannon Watts founded Mom's Demand Action in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting which killed 26 children and educators in 2012. The organization is a leading force for gun violence prevention, working at the local, state and national levels and with chapters in all 50 states

Our conversation comes on the heels of the most recent US school shooting which took the lives of 4 young people and injured 7 more. The incident, which happened on the last day of November in Oakland County, Michigan was the deadliest event at a US  campus since 2018. It was the 32nd such attack since August.
