| #91 Vocalist/ Guitarist Theophile Bourgeois | 08 May 2026 | 01:18:19 | |
Welcome everyone, and thank you for joining me today on another musical journey. I went out to Lafitte, Louisiana for this episode and sat down with guitarist and vocalist Theophile Bourgeois who founded and currently plays in Them Ol Ghosts. They’re a four piece, melodic, southern rock band with a catalog to which you can slow dance as well as rock out. Theophile began early in music, starting out on drums around 8 yrs old, but quickly moved onto guitar two years later. And it’s where he’s stayed ever since. Heavy metal consumed him early on, and it became the voice of an angst-filled teen throughout high school. We talk the facets and factors of his transition from there which included trading screaming for harmony and airing out frustrations for depth of meaning in lyricism. He pays much respect to his hometown, citing the mysterious charm of the swamp and historical prominence as the old stomping grounds for infamous pirate Jean Laffite. We also discuss the inspiration he drew from artists like Dax Riggs, whose ability to bring haunting, melodic imagery to Acid Bath’s thrash metal struck Theophile as admirable and dynamic. I found Theophile to be enthusiastic and forthcoming about his personal life. And I believe it’s what made this episode such a great one. We were able to parse through the impact becoming a father, family death, and a pandemic had on his music career; which, incidentally, almost ceased due to these factors. But hearing him describe how he waded back into those waters once again will definitely help some of our musician listeners out there that currently find themselves at a crossroads. But hey I don’t want to give everything away. So, stick around because there’s something for everyone in this episode. I’ve got Them Ol Ghosts site link in the show notes if you want to learn more, as well as ways to support this show. You can shop with realmushrooms.com for health and wellness. Philip Doty is a vocalist for Jawa Command, Man vs. Bear, and Closure. We jump right into the mechanics of a band, from promotion to performance to forming its identity. Major label positions during the death of glam metal/ birth of grunge formed a distinct impression in Philip's mind. And he describes his life in terms of a genre spectrum, including Anthrax, Megadeath, Run DMC, Cinderella and Deftones. We parse out the general attitude and shortcomings of the Louisiana music scene. We also take a look at the power of recording and engineering in the production process. | #78 - Chris Vincent Pt. 2 | 30 Jul 2025 | 01:13:42
In part two, Guitarist and songwriter Chris Vincent decides to flee New Orleans on the forewarning of his girlfriend, "Chris you're gonna die here.' His time in New Orleans had not been for naught. His music was featured on The Real World New Orleans on MTV. He headlined The Tattoos and Blues Festival in Santa Rosa, California. And he enjoyed playing gigs both in New Orleans and across the country. Now back in New Jersey, he began recovery, and endured both the loss of his father and the dissolution of his marriage. With nothing keeping him in Jersey and sobriety shoring his step, he moved back to New Orleans. He's now finished his upcoming album, Good Crook which he says is about "acceptance, moving forward in spite of failure, and embracing the thing that I really am." We discuss the creative direction he took for the coming album and some of the musicians involved, as well as where he draws the line in his own music style and intent. Chris also plays live what will be his first single, Snakes, on his upcoming album Good Crook. New album Good Crook dropping August 1st! https://chrisvincentneworleans.com/

| #77 - Chris Vincent pt. 1 | 12 Jul 2025 | 01:11:17 | |
Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, guitarist and songwriter Chris Vincent spent a lot of time sorting life out with his fists. Although it taught him much about life, he benefitted from his family moving when he was thirteen. Monroe Township, New Jersey served a more peaceful setting, conducive to creativity. And it's where he picked up a guitar and began to play. His present day choice of blues wasn't his first inclination. The energy of punk music spoke to the aggression that remained within him. Moving toward jazz and blues, Robert Johnson and Son House eventually replaced The Ramones. And tuning in open G meant he would have to create his own fingerings to suit these styles. Over time, Chris has become a seasoned storyteller whose occasionally cryptic lyrics have at times stared him in the face and confronted him. In part one of our interview, he spins a great tale, playing examples of his notions on guitar for us all to hear. Join us as this roots music pioneer draws us inside his mind. | #76 - Joey Carbo of WOORMS Pt. 2 | 28 Jun 2025 | 01:00:45
In part two, musician and producer Joey Carbo of WOORMS recalls old band break-ups that involved a girl, recording difficulties, a debilitating handicap, and an overdose. Following these trials, he formed WOORMS, which was supposed to be a temporary foray back into heavy metal. We unpack his long stint in country music with Who By Fire, a band with more pieces and a less heavy feel. We also reflect on his time in punk music and how production and vocal clarity have come to the forefront for him since them. Which is an element that has been incorporated into his production and vocals with WOORMS. He talks about the differences between albums Slake, Twitching, As Prey and Fatalismo. There's so much here to learn. Join us!

| #75 - Joey Carbo of WOORMS | 14 Jun 2025 | 01:06:43 | |
Joey Carbo has been in many bands over the years, picking up guitar, vocals, keyboard and production along the way. Through his band WOORMS, he currently implements those talents in a unique means of expression. While WOORMS holds its foundations in rock music, their concrete measures are highlighted by an exploratory sound with synth undercurrents and a lack of adherence to traditional time signatures. One could deduce that, once upon a time, Joey was inspired by bands like The Melvins and Soundgarden. But to say WOORMS resembles either is a stretch at best. His capacity to feel the sentiment and harmonics of music at an early age was undeniable. But his future held a battle between his core desires, straying vices, and the pursuits of immaturity. These days, maturity has ushered in an era of clarity and focus for him. And his catalog displays a twisted mind that has the benefit of recollection and introspection. Join us and get to know the complexity of sound that is Joey Carbo! https://woorms.bandcamp.com/music

| #74 - Bug Gigabyte | 24 May 2025 | 01:08:46 | |
Musician and DJ Bug Gigabyte has been involved in various forms of sonic exploration and synthesis since middle school. Learning horn, lead and bass guitar, lead him pick up keyboard and play in metal band Coma Dreams. He would eventually dive deep into synthesizers and studio equipment, adding recording and engineering to his repertoire. | #73 - Andrew Autin | 10 May 2025 | 01:05:29
Guitarist and keyboardist Andrew Autin was born in Metairie, Louisiana and raised by fans of crooners like Perry Como and Johnny Mathis. But bands like Metallica and KISS, he will say, changed his life. And through a musician's ear, he sought to pay tribute through the formation of several cover bands playing everything from weddings to corporate events and concert venues. Andrew's bands are the Mojeaux Band, Rock Show NOLA, Phase 5, and The Generators. Rock Show NOLA, for instance, plays covers from six bands only; Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, KISS, Journey Stix and Foreigner. His covers are precise renditions of the originals, down to every single sound, and have landed gigs in places like the superdome for Microsoft and on set for the filming of Contraband with Mark Walberg. His passion for music is unmatched. His acumen in business, as well as music, is something to be admired. And his talent is something for which we should all be thankful. Please join us and experience enthusiasm through the eyes of a gifted instrumentalist! Look for The Generators at Jaeger's, Whiskey Cowboy, Cleary Tavern, and The Landing in Slidell. | #90 Guitarist Jake Kelston | 24 Apr 2026 | 00:53:17
I sat down with Jake Kelston, a guitarist currently in bands Bakey’s Brew and Parallel Threads. There’s a lot of valuable content in this one. We discuss his upbringing in music through medieval play scores and African folk songs. And how he cycled between drums, piano and sax, eventually focusing on guitar because it gave him the ability to be a soloist. I know a lot of us would say we suffer from attention deficit. But this became an asset in Jake’s eyes, resulting in eclectic genre styles and a more extensive exploration of the creative and recording processes. Including cover songs in his repertoire reinforced this notion, and we touched on the concept of ordering these covers and originals in a set list. We did delve a bit into how genre diversity can cause issues at live shows, which had some interesting caveats. And we took inventory on how to express one’s self to fellow band members without sabotaging the creative process. So, there will be lots of impact from this discussion in your own lives. And I’m so grateful to be able to bring this to you. http://parallelthreadsmusic.com/ Elevate your health and well-being. Shop Realmushrooms.com and support this show! | #71 - Karen Waldrup (Part 2) | 23 Apr 2025 | 00:36:44
In part 2, we begin during Karen's formative years in music. She recounts first learning advice that she still lives by as well as common habits that work against the wellbeing of a vocalist. Touring poses a particular challenge because everything is accessible; both good and bad. We discuss a moment on the road that defined her decision to pursue becoming a contestant in season twenty-five of The Voice. The knowledge and experiences gained from such things as wardrobe, stage presence, and timing have proven indelible. Karen's new song "Fix It" just came out this spring, "Blue Cowboy Boots" will be her coming summer release, and her new music video for song "Blue Cowboy Boots" is coming soon (filmed in Louisiana during Mardi Gras).

| #69 - Zydeco by Birth | 09 Apr 2025 | 01:09:37 | |
Through a series of events, a Washington DC radio DJ by the name of Wayne Kahn came into possession of a box full of Beta tapes. The tapes contained the raw elements of a long since shelved documentary on the Carriere family; one of five main families to bring Zydeco alive. Their descendants would carry the tradition, bringing Zydeco to the world. And the rare footage of intimate family jam sessions and interviews would be the only relic left. He tried for many years to bring the footage to the public, even turning it over to the Smithsonian at one point. But their lack of efforts dissatisfied Wayne, as he has since been on a mission to fund and produce an origin story precious to the heritage of the south. | #65 - Bret Heart | 23 Feb 2025 | 01:14:06
Originally from Mobile Alabama and now a resident of Slidell, Louisiana, solo artist Bret Crooker (aka Bret Heart) blends sampling, guitar playing, and vocals with composition and arrangement on a digital audio workstation. He's been writing longer than he has been a published artist. But any personal apprehension concerning his commitment is slowly being overshadowed by the reception his music has received. Laying down his own version of sonic commentary on the issues plaguing his life, he is both evolving as a person and becoming more relatable to his growing fanbase. His expressions pulse through the veins of pop punk, hip hop, metalcore and emo. And for the first time, in this episode we listen to several of his tracks allowing him to discuss the meanings as well as his writing methods. Join us and get to know this fast rising musician!

| #64 - Lenny Zenith | 09 Feb 2025 | 00:40:48 | |
Lenny Zenith has been many things throughout the course of his life; a student at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), a label executive, a vocalist, a pianist, and a guitarist. Discouragement from guidance councilors and classmates, falling short of secondary educational standards, and existing in a close-minded, homogeneous world coerced Lenny, first, toward punk music and the anti ethos and, secondly, into mercurial genre perspectives. In the beginning, there was RZA, enabling Lenny to open for Iggy Pop, and bands like XTC, Ian Hunter, U2, The Gun Club, Marshal Crenshaw and more. He would go onto form and play in other bands like Jenifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, and Pop Comb. He's been in New York since '91, but he's coming home soon to stay. He will be performing at Tipitina's April 5th!

| #63 - Byron Daniel | 19 Jan 2025 | 01:53:13 | |
Guitarist and vocalist Byron Daniel founded and currently plays in Byron Daniel and the Five Dead Dogs. Being a hired gun on guitar and bass, he shares his reliance upon improvisation and versatility. For his own band, he stresses the importance of jam sessions not only for warming up, but for explorations in discovering new material. By many, he is received as southern rock. As for his own perspective, he notes a departure from stoner/ doom metal, a folk and singer/ songwriter influence, and a fusion between Drive-By Truckers and Black Sabbath. With three albums and two singles in his current band's catalog, I encourage one and all to have a listen and enjoy the gift of talent that Byron brings to the world.

| #89 Percussionist/ Vocalist Cyril Neville | 30 Mar 2026 | 01:09:43 | |
Grammy award winning percussionist Cyril Neville is known as a member of The Meters, The Neville Brothers, The Wild Tchoupitoulas, the Voice of the Wetlands All-stars, Cyril Neville & the Uptown Allstars and a former member of David Batiste and the Gladiators. We sat down to peel beyond those layers, to discuss who Cyril really is and what has shaped him over the years. Personal influences like Idris Muhammed, Lee Dorsey and Dr. John were there at an early age to nourish and encourage Cyril on his path; a path that would elevate him above trials to which many of his peers would succumb. We talk about how the rhythm of the city came to him everyday through tugboats, pile-drivers and street cars. And how that city’s Wards became the villages that raised him. You will find no interview of his with depth greater than this one. And you will find no warmer, more humble, more spiritual soul than the one revealed here in Cyril Neville. Join us! Guitarist/ vocalist Chris Rico has been a staple in the Louisiana music scene for countless years. | #58 - Chet Tabor | 04 Oct 2024 | 01:16:55
Originally from just outside of Thibodeaux in Choctaw, Chet Tabor of band Them Guys cites small town roots as propelling his beliefs in his band as a family unit. Those same small town circumstances meant he was hanging out with a group of kids with a larger span in age. Experiencing the tastes and influences from the music collections of the older kids meant he was hearing Pearl Jam and Soundgarden at six years of age. Hearing his father's 70's music and quickly being ushered into his older brother's 90's selections also meant being able to hear the contrasts in musical soundscapes early on in his life. We sit and talk about initial band experiences gone bad, solutions and growth, and his view on the sensations of playing covers as opposed to playing music that he has composed.

Trained as an opera singer and classical pianist, Georgia native Lilli Lewis has been a composer, producer and performer for over two decades. Fresh off the stage at this year's Jazz Fest, Lilli is well versed in folk, roots, country soul, gospel, and jazz. Having a prodigious ear early on, the practice of music was a way for her to mend early childhood trauma as well as congeal the different hemispheres of her mind. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds were enough of an inspiration to her to quit her job, leave town, and pursue her career in music. She has always been a multi-genre writer, finding it difficult to identify with any one in particular. | #44 - Sean Riley | 17 Feb 2024 | 01:01:26
Freshly signed to Pugnacious Records, singer/ songwriter and guitarist Sean Riley originally hails from Saratoga Springs, New York. He grew up listening to Roy Orbison, Beach Boys, Paul Simon, and Waylon Jennings. Though no one in his family played, he just loved the look of an SG hanging on the music shop wall and took it upon himself to learn. He was a bit of a shy kid but playing helped him out of his shell, finding support and making friends along the way. He gravitated toward his current expressions of blues, roots, and Americana and formed Sean Riley and the Water. While Manhattan venues started disappearing, he joined the migration to the underground venues and house shows playing funky rock, indie, and blues in clubs in Brooklyn. He enjoys the feeling he gets from performing live and has chosen to capture his recordings in that manner. His new album, Stone Cold Hands, is coming out March 8th. seanrileyandthewater.com Shop Realmushrooms.com and support this show!
